Finally the First Finals
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): Donna - great question about the
summer credits. Students who started their first semester on Fall 2011
will be required to complete 9 credit hours over the summer. These
credits can be done all at once or through out the course of 4 years. They
also have the option of meeting this requirement through study abroad
programs 11/30/2011 17:03
LOBBY donnaellenkash
donnaellenkash: If the student pays for the one of the UF sponsered
abroad programs, is that instead of the 9 credit hour fee paid to UF? 11/30/2011 17:05
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): edgardo - is your student currently
experienceing this breakdown because of academics or other means? 11/30/2011 17:05
LOBBY edgardo14
edgardo14: in terms onAcademics he's doing very good, We believe is the
moment of finals 11/30/2011 17:07
LOBBY Claritza Claritza: Hi moderators and participants 11/30/2011 17:07
LOBBY familychatadministrator

the chat. My name is Jaime Gresley and I am one of the Assistant Deans in
the Dean of Students Office and Director of New Student and Family
Programs 11/30/2011 17:08
LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Hi Claritza how are you doing 11/30/2011 17:08
LOBBY Champsdad Champsdad: Hi Claritza, Moderators & Participants 11/30/2011 17:08
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Hi! My name is Lou and I am an
academic advsior at UF. I look forward to chatting with you all. 11/30/2011 17:08
LOBBY Claritza
Claritza: doing well, excited to chat with others via this medium and learn
more about UF and how to support our student 11/30/2011 17:08
LOBBY Claritza Claritza: Donna has asked a good question, what is the answer to that? 11/30/2011 17:09
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): Finals can always become a time of
stress for our students. You can continue to support your students during
this time by providing them with words of encouragement. sometimes
sending surprise care packages or a good luck card is always a great way
to show your support 11/30/2011 17:09
LOBBY edgardo14 edgardo14: he's considering after this semester go back home. 11/30/2011 17:09
LOBBY saxena275
saxena275: good evening Victor how does the letter grades A,B
correspond to the Percentages eg A 90-100% 11/30/2011 17:09
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): edgardo14: If your son has not
already done so, please encourage him to see his academic advisor. 11/30/2011 17:10
LOBBY edgardo14 edgardo14: Lou, I did already. But not positive answer I received 11/30/2011 17:10
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): saxena - each professor has their
own grading scale. some instructors may use minus grades as others will
choose to not use them. it all really depends on the instructor 11/30/2011 17:11
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Hi Donna, good question so to
be clear are you asking if a study abroad program's credits can be applied
to the summer credit hour requirement? 11/30/2011 17:11
LOBBY coonies
coonies: How are class sign-up schedules determined? My daughters
advised that by the time their sign-up time came, all the classes they
wanted were already full. Are freshman the last to have sign-up times? 11/30/2011 17:11
LOBBY AprilFool
AprilFool: edgardo: Maybe your son needs more of a support network.
Moderators, isn't there something called an IDEAL consultation or
something like that, to help a student find groups that match his
interests? 11/30/2011 17:12
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): edgardo - i would encourage him
to come to the Dean of Students Office and talk to someone here and we
can help him get connect to campus. 11/30/2011 17:12
LOBBY edgardo14
edgardo14: Can I set an appoitment or can you talk to him To see if they
are other issue unknow for such desition 11/30/2011 17:12
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): saxena275: As Victor said, each
instructor determines the grading scale for their class. But here is a link to
the UF grading system information that might be helpful:
http://registrar.ufl.edu/catalog1011/policies/regulationgrades.html 11/30/2011 17:13
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): AprilFools - you are correct, IDEAL
provides individual consultations to students to help them get connected
with students organizations on campus that share the same interest the
student may have. 11/30/2011 17:13
LOBBY AprilFool AprilFool: I think that might be a great idea for edgardo's son. 11/30/2011 17:14
LOBBY donnaellenkash
donnaellenkash: The summer study abroad program says you receive 6
credits , but I was told that would cover the 9 credit requirement. Also, I
wanted to make sure 11/30/2011 17:14
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): edgardo14: He can definitely
make an appointment. Please have him call (352) 392-1521 tomorrow
after 8:00. 11/30/2011 17:15
LOBBY donnaellenkash
donnaellenkash: once we pay for the abroad trip we don't then get a
seperate bill from UF for the 9 credits 11/30/2011 17:15
LOBBY Champsdad
Champsdad: I am glad Fraternity Drama, duties & pledging etc etc is over,
I just hope my student's GPA was not effected by that , and now the
finals. Keep your fingers crossed guys 11/30/2011 17:15
LOBBY AprilFool
AprilFool: ChampsDad: I think we all need to keep those fingers crossed.
Glad the Fraternity drama is over. My daughter loves her sorority and it
seems to be a real benefit overall, is your son liking his fraternity? 11/30/2011 17:18
LOBBY Champsdad
Champsdad: Yes Aprilfool, my son loves it & thinks himself lucky to get in
that Frat, the problem is champsdad does not, well time and grades will
tell 11/30/2011 17:19
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Hi Donna I am looking into as it
varies a little based on the program. Is it being sponsored through UF's
study abroad program? 11/30/2011 17:19
LOBBY AprilFool
AprilFool: It has been a long time since I faced finals at UF. What is the
best general advice we can give our students? 11/30/2011 17:20
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): donnaellenkash: If I understand
your question correctly, if a student does a summer study abroad
program but only earns 6 hours, UF will consider that as fulfilling their
entire 9 hour summer requirement. Does that answer your question? 11/30/2011 17:20
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Champsdad and AprilFool, the
first semester is often the hardest regarding time commitments and
Greek Life but some great skills I am sure that will be learned and to be
used for next semester 11/30/2011 17:20
LOBBY saxena275
saxena275: Is minor in Information Technology relatively new and is there
a way to to find out more about it as my son plans to take it 11/30/2011 17:21
LOBBY Champsdad
Champsdad: Keep your nose to the grind & things turn our OK, otherwise
get into the line at occupy wall street 11/30/2011 17:21
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): AprilFool: Hopefullly if your
students have kept up throughout the semester, getting ready for finals
should just be a matter of consolidating their notes/materials and doing
review sessions. The Broward Teaching Center
www.teachingcenter.ufl.edu has some great video resources on getting
ready fior finals. 11/30/2011 17:23
LOBBY Claritza
Claritza: @Champsdad and @AprilFool: I know frats and sororities have
been around and are great experiences for our students, I guess I never
really learned the benefits of them, back in my days I went straight for my
BS in Nursing and never looked side ways, but my student says frats and
sororities are big at UF 11/30/2011 17:24
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Hi Saxena are your refering to
the information technology minor housed in the College of Business?
http://warrington.ufl.edu/isom/certifminor/ 11/30/2011 17:24
LOBBY mjnecaise
mjnecaise: My daughter loves living in Hume! Will she be able to live in
Hume her soph year? When will dorm sign-up be available for summer
term? 11/30/2011 17:25
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): April another piece of advice
would be for students to try to keep up healthy habits during this time.
While it may be tempting to stay up all night studying, getting rest, eating
good food and even exercise are all beneficial in addition to studying of
course. 11/30/2011 17:25
LOBBY saxena275
saxena275: yes Jamie, is there a counselor whom he can meet to get
more info. as to what it is and how many credits are needed 11/30/2011 17:27
LOBBY terigold
terigold: where on the UF website can we learn more about summer
abroad? 11/30/2011 17:27
LOBBY AprilFool
AprilFool: Thanks Lou. I think she is in very good shape with her studies.
She is depressed because she had to drop one class. But, she started off
the semester with mono and I think she is lucky to have only missed a
couple of months of workouts and dropping one class. 11/30/2011 17:27
LOBBY AprilFool
AprilFool: Jaime: In light of the mono, I think your advice is especially
appropriate. 11/30/2011 17:28
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): AprilFool: I'm sorry to hear she
had mono. Yes, that is a pretty amazing that she has done so well despite
the illness. Hope she is feeling better. 11/30/2011 17:28
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): teri - information about study
abroad programs can be found here : http://www.abroad.ufic.ufl.edu/ 11/30/2011 17:29
LOBBY AprilFool
AprilFool: She is doing great. Tires a little easily, but otherwise back to full
health. 11/30/2011 17:29
LOBBY Claritza
Claritza: Once finals are over, we will be talking with our student about
Spring and Summer. She will come home for summer term- question- can
she take summer courses at our local college to stay busy at a slower pace
when home, how do those summer credits get reported to her UF
transcript?? 11/30/2011 17:30
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): saxena275: Students can "degree
shop" on ISIS and see the requirements for minors and they can also visit
with an advisor in the College of Business that administers this minor. 11/30/2011 17:30
LOBBY saxena275 saxena275: thanks Lou 11/30/2011 17:31
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Yes he can meet with both an
advisor from Study Abroad and also her academic advisor to cover the
course credit requirement and then also Financial Services to discuss fees.
This website is very helpful http://www.sfa.ufl.edu/additional/study-
abroad/ also here are phone numbers for the areas list prior: Study
Abroad: 352 273-1539 Financial Services: 352-392-0181 11/30/2011 17:31
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Claritza: Students who want to
take courses at their local college in the summer just need to get approval
through the www.facts.org by completing the transient form. As a side
note, if they want the courses to count toward the nine hour state
university summer requirement, the courses need to be taken at one of
the 10 state universities. 11/30/2011 17:32
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): mjnecaise, room continuation
contracts with housing should be available in Mid March, Here is a link to
the webpage where that information will be updated
http://www.housing.ufl.edu/current/contracts.php 11/30/2011 17:34
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Claritza: Courses taken elsewhere
during the summer appear on the UF transcript but they do not calculuate
into the overall UF GPA. However, if they take "tracking courses" at their
local college, these grades will calculate into their tracking GPA. So be
sure to tell your student to discuss this with an advisor if they have
questions. 11/30/2011 17:35
LOBBY donnaellenkash
donnaellenkash: You say summer courses will count toward UF summer
hours if taken at one of the 10 state universities. Is that Florida state
universities? 11/30/2011 17:35
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): donnaellenkash: Yes, the nine
hour summer requirement is actually not a UF requirement--it is a state
university requirement. 11/30/2011 17:36
LOBBY Claritza Claritza: Which is the most southern of the 10 state universities in FL? 11/30/2011 17:37
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): donnaellenkash: sorry...yes, a
Florida state university (e.g., FSU, UCF, FAU, FIU, USF, FIU..) You are
testing my geography now but I believe FIU-Florida International
University would be the most southern. 11/30/2011 17:37
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): Geographically speaking Florida
International University is the most southern insitution 11/30/2011 17:38
LOBBY Claritza
Claritza: what is the difference between the overall UF GPA and the
tracking GPA? 11/30/2011 17:38
LOBBY Claritza Claritza: perfect FIU is in our area, we're down in Broward County 11/30/2011 17:39
LOBBY mjnecaise
mjnecaise: Thank you, Jaime. Will the site be helpful for summer term
housing? 11/30/2011 17:39
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Claritza: The overall UF GPA is the
GPA on all of the courses a student has taken at UF. The tracking GPA is
the GPA on their major/tracking courses. For example, for a history
major, this would be the GPA on all of a student's history classes. 11/30/2011 17:39
LOBBY blueheel75
blueheel75: Is there some exemption for 9-hr summer requirement?
Thought I read in some cases it is not required . 11/30/2011 17:39
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): blueheelI75: Students can petition
through their College if they have a hardship that can be well
documented. 11/30/2011 17:40
LOBBY coonies
coonies: I posted a question earlier in the chat about spring class sign-up
schedules, but did not see a reply. 11/30/2011 17:41
LOBBY blueheel75
blueheel75: Is there nothing related to Bright Futures or AP credits that
satisfies the 9-hr summer requirement? 11/30/2011 17:42
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): coonies: My apologies..yes,
registration appointments are assigned based on the amount of credit
hours a student has earned. So their appointment times will get earlier
every semester as they earn more hours. 11/30/2011 17:42
LOBBY saxena275
saxena275: and also those who started during summer are exempted
from the 9 hr summer requirement 11/30/2011 17:42
LOBBY blueheel75
blueheel75: Does anyone have any experience with the massage therapy
services thru Rec Sports? recommendations ? 11/30/2011 17:43
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Mjencaise: Yes this is the site
that will be used to access the renewal information. Also students will be
sent information directly from Housing as the timeline nears. 11/30/2011 17:43
LOBBY coonies
coonies: Thanks- I was guessing that this had a lot to do with their
problem. 11/30/2011 17:43
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): blueheel75 I have had some
fellow colleagues just rave about the massage services in Rec Sports and it
is pretty reasonabley priced 11/30/2011 17:44
LOBBY blueheel75
blueheel75: Since my daughter started in summer 2011 and took 6 hrs so
she's fulfilled it. Please confirm 11/30/2011 17:44
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): blueheelI75: The legislature
changed the rule on this in the latest legislative sesion last spring. So
students are no longer exempt based on their incoming credits. But,
honestly, many students will meet the summer requirement "naturally"--a
lot of students study abroad in the summer, do summer internships etc.
They can also take on-line courses in the summer. 11/30/2011 17:44
LOBBY donnaellenkash
donnaellenkash: How do you get summer credits for a summer
internship? 11/30/2011 17:45
LOBBY donnaellenkash
donnaellenkash: can you provide me with the phone number of anyone
who could provide more information on internships 11/30/2011 17:46
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): blueheelI75: Please have her
check with an advisor who can look at her actual record and confirm. But,
in general, students who started in Summer B before the new legislation
went into effect, should be exempt if they already had nine hours of AP,
IB, dual enrollment etc. 11/30/2011 17:46
LOBBY blueheel75
blueheel75: Thanks she would be one of those who started in summer B
before new legislation - will have her advisor confirm it - thanks again! 11/30/2011 17:47
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Hi Donna, the Career Resource
Center is very helpful regarding internships their number is 352-392-1601 11/30/2011 17:47
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): donna - there are many locations
to find internships, your student can start with our #1 rated Career
Resource Center http://www.crc.ufl.edu/ 11/30/2011 17:48
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): donnaellenkash: UF offers
internship credit through a regular course number that they register for
through their department if the internship is related to their major or
through a generic internship credit that UF offers if it is not related and
would just count as an elective. 11/30/2011 17:48
LOBBY AprilFool
AprilFool: For those worried about the summer requirement. My
daughter's first semester at UF was this past summer...she loved it and is
looking forward to summer again. Slower pace and less stress. 11/30/2011 17:48
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Also often departments within
the college can be helpful too so checking with her faculty, and adivsors
will be helpful too 11/30/2011 17:48
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): AprilFool: Yes, I hear that from a
lot of students--they love the pace of summer at UF. 11/30/2011 17:48
LOBBY tfriedrich
tfriedrich: good evening, first time to visit chat just wondering about
some of the best housing off campus to start looking into 11/30/2011 17:49
LOBBY donnaellenkash donnaellenkash: thank you 11/30/2011 17:49
LOBBY AprilFool AprilFool: tfriedrich: I think there is an Off-Campus Housing office. 11/30/2011 17:50
LOBBY LisaSil
LisaSil: When will you post the archive from this chat?. I just joined in an
missed the beginning. 11/30/2011 17:50
LOBBY tfriedrich
tfriedrich: yes, I've heard that before and even talked to them but just
wondered if parents on here knew of a great place your child is already
living at? 11/30/2011 17:51
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): tfriedrich, aprilfool is correct the
Office of Off Campus Life is a great place to start
http://www.offcampus.ufl.edu/ 11/30/2011 17:51
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): aprilfool - you are correct, your
student can visit the Office of Off Campus Life. They are located on the
3rd Floor of Peabody Hall. http://housing.offcampus.ufl.edu/ 11/30/2011 17:52
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): The chat will be posted 48 hours
after the chat at http://www.dso.ufl.edu/nsfp/parents/familyonline/ 11/30/2011 17:52
LOBBY tfriedrich tfriedrich: thanks guys 11/30/2011 17:52
LOBBY edgardo14 edgardo14: Thank you Guys!! 11/30/2011 17:53
LOBBY LisaSil LisaSil: Thanks Jamie. 11/30/2011 17:53
LOBBY edgardo14 edgardo14: Have a nice evening 11/30/2011 17:53
LOBBY AprilFool
AprilFool: When our students are home on break, is there anything UF
related that they need to take care of? Deadlines for anything? 11/30/2011 17:53
LOBBY tfriedrich
tfriedrich: oh good question aprilfool, what do they have to bring home?
what date are they due back to school after the holidays? she is a
freshman. 11/30/2011 17:54
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): AprilFool: Grades will post on ISIS
on December 21. ISIS will reopen on December 22 so if they want to
continue to adjust their Spring schedule while they are home, they can
certainly do that but otherwise they should relax and enjoy being home
and get rested up for the next semester!!! 11/30/2011 17:56
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): great questions - Spring Semester
will begin on Monday, January 9, 2012. Students who live on campus
should be receiving information about the winter check-out process and
when the halls will open again for spring with in the next week. 11/30/2011 17:56
LOBBY AprilFool AprilFool: Thank you Lou and Victor. 11/30/2011 17:56
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Students will be able to continue
to adjust their schedule over break, look for that 10am class or that
elective they wanted to add however please know that on Friday January
13 Drop Add will end and students will need to have made any schedules
by this time. 11/30/2011 17:56
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): As Jaime mentions, this is often a
great time for students to "fine tune" their Spring schedule just a lot of
students are dropping and adding during this time period and they start to
really think about the next semester's schedule. 11/30/2011 17:58
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): One thing to keep in mind during
the winter break is to remind their student to pack any winter clothing
they may need since the early part of Spring Semester normally tents to
be pretty cool. 11/30/2011 17:58
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Good point, Victor--especially
those students who are from South Florida! January and February in
Gainesville can be very chilly! 11/30/2011 17:59
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Also residence halls will be
closed during the break so please make sure that all necessities (favorite
shirt, pillow persciprtions) are taken home. 11/30/2011 18:00
LOBBY mjnecaise
mjnecaise: Thank you for the information on housing. And great tips for
break! 11/30/2011 18:00
LOBBY bittare1 bittare1: Curious Jaime & Victor...what dpes "NSFP" stand for? 11/30/2011 18:01
LOBBY dhuynh dhuynh: When are we looking for room for fall semester? 11/30/2011 18:03
LOBBY familychatadministrator
familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): NSFP stands for New Student
and Family Programs, we are the office that hosts Preview, Family
Weekend, Convocation as well as other support programs for new
students and family members 11/30/2011 18:03
LOBBY bittare1 bittare1: Oh. Thanks. 11/30/2011 18:04
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): dhuynh: are you referring to
housing for the upcoming academic school year? 11/30/2011 18:05
LOBBY tfriedrich
tfriedrich: when is deadline for meal plan to be changed, added or
deleted? 11/30/2011 18:05

magic. However, there are advantages to knowing your instructors, so
you could point those out - first, if your student really hlikes the
professor's teaching, if she gets to know the instructor, she could be
offered opportunities (to do research, an independent study, to TA for a
class, or even just hear about another good class) that she might not
otherwise. 11/30/2011 18:17

point your student will be graduating and may want letters of reference.
If she has gone out of her way to get to know an instructor, it is easier to

barely knows the student. 11/30/2011 18:18

LOBBY wbandetuf
wbandetuf: Is there a way to see the professor's syllabus before you

LOBBY LisaSil LisaSil: Thanks 11/30/2011 18:37
LOBBY wbandetuf
wbandetuf: If the professor has only 3 exams and none of them are

but to withdraw from the class. Also, my son and I have both heard/read
that some professors are being told that they can't have too many As or
Bs in a class or they getting "a talking to" by the higher ups. 11/30/2011 18:40
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Victor): kjrosko- SNAP is a great resource
that is funded through Student Government, they run from 6:30pm to
3am, they have a pretty good response rate and they make sure students
arrive to their final on campus location during the evening hours. This is a
very popular service for all of our students and i would continue to
encourage your student to use the service. 11/30/2011 18:40

LisaSil: Thank you. I will pass this along. He told me about someone who
recently spoke in his East Hall area that was doing bio mechanical

the summer and beyond? He feels that as a freshman it would be too
hard to get an internship just yet. 11/30/2011 18:43
LOBBY wbandetuf
wbandetuf: Victor, you attended UF. I believe the whole -+ started in
2009. Why is that, do you know? How many students have had to
withdraw for fear that they might get a C- in a critical tracking class? 11/30/2011 18:44
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lynn): wbandetuf, I'm not sure if you
have a question...it is true that if there are only a couple of exams and you
do poorly on one, sometimes dropping the course is your best bet. While
it may be the case that some professors who potentially are giving all As -
if all students are NOT doing excellent work - may be talked to about
whether they are being geniunely rigorous in their classes, I do not believe
this happens consistently. I think it is more of a case of departments
trying to strike the balance between giving credit where it is perhaps not
fully deserved - which, of course, actually hurts the students who ARE
excelling - and trying to make sure students learn the material and have a
fair shot at a satisfactory grade. 11/30/2011 18:45
LOBBY familychatmoderator

syllabus before signing up for the class? 11/30/2011 18:47
LOBBY LisaSil LisaSil: OK . Thank you Lynn. 11/30/2011 18:47
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lynn): wbandetuf, As an advisor I can
say anecdotally that students who are dropping a critical tracking class
who think they might get a C- often could also get a D or lower depending
on the performance on last exams. I don't think the minus grade has
made a big difference. 11/30/2011 18:49
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lynn): wbandetuf, BTW I believe it was
the students who lobbied for the +/- system. I think a C is still a C, if you
are lower than that, you might have gotten a D and now you get a C-, but
neither is satisfactory. 11/30/2011 18:50

LOBBY wbandetuf
wbandetuf: It makes a difference if you don't get credit for the critical
tracking class and it's a gamble that some students might not want to
take. What about the syllabus? Where can a student see the professor's
syllabus before signing up for the class? 11/30/2011 18:51
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lynn): wbandetuf, Many professors will
have their syllabus ready several days before classes. Students definitely
get them that first day of class and have the week to adjust (drop/add) if
they think a different class/learning style/grading scheme will work better
for them. 11/30/2011 18:51
LOBBY wbandetuf
wbandetuf: BTW Lynn, I'm not sure what students lobbied for the +/- This
only began in 2009 from what I understand. Do the professor's change
their syllabus semester to semester? Shouldn't the syllabus be on file
somewhere? 11/30/2011 18:53
LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lynn): Sorry wbandetuf, I'm not making
myself clear. I am not aware of professors whose grading before +/- was
(for example) 70=C, 65-70=D+ who have RAISED the standard for a C to a
75. Instead the grading system is now more likely to be 70=C, 67-69=C-,
64-66=D+, etc. 11/30/2011 18:53

saxena275: hi does n online course from another FL state univ. satisfies

LOBBY familychatmoderator
familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lynn): wbandetuf, professors do change
their syllabi from semester to semester. Frequently, they will not teach

need to update their syllabi. 11/30/2011 18:55

from this critical tracking class. So, if I understand correctly there is no
place for a student to view the syllabus (online), is that correct? 11/30/2011 18:58

familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lynn): wbandetuf, I was using an
example of before and after, NOT talking about your students specific
class. All I was saying was that the standard for a C has likely not changed,
just the gradations below a C. Your student should have a copy of the
syllabus (handed out in class) or on e-learning. Once a class has started
there is definitely a syllabus available, your student should have access to
it. 11/30/2011 19:00
