Inaugural Session
The landscape of financial services has transformed over the years. From the initial focus on products and technology, the attention has shifted towards consumers and to the processes that create value for consumers. The Government and the Regulators have also taken cognizance of the requirement of reforms and effective regulations to foster the pace of the economic progress with a view to empower and protect the financial consumers.
At present, to aid the growth process, while the Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission (FSLRC) had been established by Government of India (GOI) primarily to simplify and rewrite financial sector legislations and subordinate legislations, and bring them in harmony with the requirements of our country’s fast growing financial sector, the task is onerous and requires an active participation of all stakeholders.
As stated in the approach paper released by FSLRC that “...the consumers of financial services are often more vulnerable than consumers of ordinary goods and require a special effort by the State...”, it is believed that with an active participation of other stakeholders viz. the product manufacturers, financial intermediaries etc., consumer empowerment and protection would serve as an important business metric apart from the regulatory compliance. The efforts of all stakeholders would also aid in enhancing the levels of Financial Literacy and creating avenues for Financial Inclusion as well.
