It is an honor to serve as your President this year. In Novem- ber, the Austin Chapter was awarded the Gold Level Achieve- ment Award at the 2013 FPA Chapter Leaders Conference, continuing a long string of winning the highest level chapter award from FPA National. In 2014, I want to continue to build on our chapter’s many successful programs. The year is already off to a great start for the Austin FPA! We have an awesome group of officers this year working extremely hard to offer interesting and informa- tive programs and focusing on our members getting great value from FPA. Our board consists of both people with a lot of experience in the Austin FPA, as well as new board members who are bringing great ideas to further improve our chapter. It’s not too late to get involved in one of our committees this year; we are always look- ing for help. Joining a committee is a great way to learn more about FPA and our chapter. One area where we can use everyone’s help is in recruiting sponsors. We currently have six Platinum Sponsors and four Gold Sponsors. We really need ten Platinum sponsors (one for each of our meetings in 2014) and additional Gold Sponsors. Aus- tin FPA sponsorship is a unique opportunity for companies to reach the largest and best group of local financial planners at very reasonable cost. How did you make your break into the financial industries field? Was it a newspaper ad of long ago, a monster.com posting or various forms of serendipity?

According to research by local career solutions firm, Right Management, the personal interaction of networking, consistently trumps other job seeking methods. Right Management, which is an arm of Milwaukee-based staffing giant, Manpower Group, has surveyed individuals receiving its outplacement services for the past five years. Each year, networking led the race an average of 45% for its sample group of 46,000 as a successful way to obtain employment over other methods such as internet job boards, agencies/recruiters, direct approaches, newspaper ads and other. In February, CFP hopefuls had the opportunity to master the art of network-ing with Austin-area financial companies at the Austin FPA Career Day. This season’s Career Day continued a seven year tradition of networking and interviews for career-changers and new starters. Employers were given the chance to find their next star to add value to their firm in a central meeting place. To find these stars, CFP Program Directors and university financial professors from everywhere between Dallas to Lubbock, Houston to San An-tonio and of course, Austin were reached. Nine businesses signed up to pos-sibly open their doors to an intern or staff member. Candidates arrived dressed in their business finest, some with a touch of nerves, to engage in practicing their elevator speech and dazzling interviewers with their charm and potential. In peeking into the room, some lightly joked that the inter-view sessions appeared to equate to speed interviewing (a play on speed dat-ing experiences), but clicked into serious mode once face-to-face with their prospective future boss. Several sponsors added to the atmosphere by filling the front atrium with informational booths about their services. Who was hired? Well, the jury is still out as firms conduct their internal methods of vetting. As Will Rogers said, “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.” Whether or not follow-up interviews were received, each candidate got a taste of their future as they enter their journey into the financial field.

Daphne is a member of the Austin FPA, NAPFA and former member of the Writers’ League of Texas. She volunteers as a financial coach for low income families at Foundation Communities and is actively involved at her church. You can often find her planning a so-cial event or cooking for family and friends, traveling, reading, listening to music or at Town Lake.

FPA BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Daphne Jordan

Almost everyone deals with two treasures that they are sometimes not prepared to handle: children and money. Daphne has had the opportunity to receive training and experience in each of these areas. Prior to joining Austin Asset in 2013, this UT Austin math graduate was as an elementary teacher where she molded young minds as well as provided curriculum training to teachers at district, regional and state levels. She later went on to serve as the business manager at a local church. In this capacity, she ensured 501(c) (3) com-pliance, budget maintenance, strong internal controls, en-gaging supervision and oversaw various accounting func-tions. Artist, Vincent Van Gogh once said, “I dream of painting then I paint my dreams.” Daphne’s desire to educate, ad-vise and guide people and nonprofits about their finances, so that they in turn could create their dreams, led her to enter the University of Texas Financial Planning Certifi-cate program. At Austin Asset, she currently assists the planning team to develop financial blueprints and serve clients in their fi-nancial needs. She realizes that no one knows the future, but that a well-thought-out plan goes a long way in smoothing out any potential bumps.

BLECKLEY DOBBS, CFP®, PRESIDENT. Bleckley joined Lucien, Stirling & Gray in 2004, after a

20-year career with 3M. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Georgia

Tech, and an MBA from the University of Minnesota.

He also holds a Certificate in Financial Planning from the University of Texas at Austin, the FINRA

Series 7 and 66 licenses, the Group 1 Life, Health & Disability insurance license. He obtained the

LISA FOX, CFP®, PRESIDENT ELECT. Lisa is the Director of Financial Planning with South

agement from Boston University and a Bachelor of Science in Business from Western Governors

years.

Mike has been a contributing editor of the Fort Worth Business Press, was named in 2002 by D

Magazine as one of the top financial advisors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, was named one

of “America’s Top Financial Planners” by the Consumers’ Research Council of America in 2009

and previously served on the Financial Planning Services

JEWEL ARRINGTON, CHAIRMAN, is a financial planner with Per Stirling Capital Management.

She is a graduate of the University of Texas School of Law and is a licensed attorney. She re-

ceived her undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Arts in English, from Centenary College of Louisi-

ana. She completed the financial planning certificate program at the University of Texas and is a

candidate for certification by the CFP® Board.

Jewel is a volunteer in the financial coaching and tax return preparation programs of Foundation

Communities, a local non-profit that provides affordable housing and support services to low-

income individual and families.

BRITTANY FARRIS, PRO BONO. Brittany holds a Bachelor of Science in Personal Financial

Planning from Texas Tech University. She serves as the Operations Manager and Associate

Planner for her firm Stone Asset Management, Inc.

As the Career Day Co-Director, she is responsible for coordinating student and interviewer sched-

uling, identifying corporate sponsorship opportunities for non-interviewing firms, and overall op-

erations of the day. One of Brittany's passions is financial literacy and in her free time she volun-

teers with various organizations to share her knowledge and experience with lower income fami-

lies and younger generations.

DARLEEN M. GILMORE, CFP®, GOLF COMMITTEE DIRECTOR. Darleen has been in the fi-

nancial plan-ning business for over two decades. She began her career in Houston, Texas with a

major Wall Street investment firm. She was soon promoted to Vice President with affiliated offices

in Dallas, Albuquerque, St. Louis and Austin.

As owner of Austin Wealth Specialists, Darleen has also authored “Understanding Biblical Finan-

RONSEY CHAWLA, MBA, PUBLIC RELATIONS DIRECTOR. Ronsey is a Financial Advisor at Per Stirling Capital Management working in their Wealth Management Division. In a management consulting career spanning nearly 15-years, Ronsey worked with Fortune 500 clients to address a variety of strategic, organizational, and operational business challenges. He worked collabora-tively with his clients to provide analyses and recommendations with a direct impact on their busi-ness. He now extends his skill set and expertise to advise professionals and executives, most notably in the healthcare, management consulting, and technology industries regarding their fi-nancial planning needs.

Ronsey and his wife Jane live in the Northwest Hills neighborhood of Austin, where they are rais-ing their son and baby daughter. In his spare time, Ronsey enjoys racquet sports, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

TERI W. BERGSTROM, CFP®, CLU, NEWSLETTER. Is a thirty-seven year industry veteran who

specializes in wealth management and fee-based portfolio management, with a particular empha-

sis on the management of 403(b), ORP, IRA and other types of retirement accounts. Teri’s exten-

sive resume includes experience as an Investment Advisor, a Certified Financial Planner, a Reg-

istered Representative, an insurance agent, and a specialist in employee benefits.

Teri also owned and managed a successful Registered Investment Advisory firm for almost fifteen

years.

LAURENCE EGLE, CFP®, AUSTIN PLANNERS CONFERENCE DIRECTOR. Laurence has been an HD Vest Investment Services advisor since 1998. He is also an HD Vest Chapter Direc-tor for central Texas. He began his career as an investment broker with A.G. Edwards in 1986. He holds the Series 7, 63, 65, and insurance licenses. He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin in 1984 with a BBA, completed the University of Texas Financial Planning Certification Program in 2008, and earned his CFP in 2009. Laurence also serves on the board of the Texas Music Museum and recently attended the Grammy's as a member of the Recording Academy. CHRISTOPHER VAN SLYKE, CFP®, CORPORATE SPONSOR DIRECTOR. Christopher is a

Since 1996, Mr. Van Slyke has been an independent wealth manager and entrepreneur. Mr. Van

Slyke is a past member of the board of directors of The Financial Planning Association (FPA) of

San Diego and Los Angeles. He currently serves as a board member for the Austin FPA. As an

avid golfer, Christopher enjoys playing at Morgan Run in Rancho Santa Fe and Barton Creek

Country Club in Austin.

SCOTT DERBER, CFP®, CAREER DEVELOPMENT CO-DIRECTOR. Scott is a Senior Manager

at University Federal Credit Union, where he works with businesses throughout the community in

bringing comprehensive financial services to employees. Scott received his BBA and MBA at the

University of Wisconsin – Madison, and received the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM certi-

fication in 2006, following the certificate program at UT-Austin.

Scott is active with his daughter’s high school Parent Advisory Board, the Chamber’s Op-portunity

Austin Economic Development group, and can be frequently found at various networking events.

Scott and his wife, Carolina, have one daughter, Isabelle.

MELISSA FLEMING, CFP®., GOVERNMENT RELATIONS DIRECTOR. Melissa is the CEO of

Fleming & Conway Allstate Agency specializing in property and casualty insurance for both resi-

dential and commercial clients. The agency is ranked #1 in Customer Service and is a designated

Premier Ser-vice Agency. After graduating from The University of Texas, Melissa had a success-

ful 14 year career in Private Banking, prior to opening her agency.

Melissa enjoys serving on the Board of the Girl Scouts of Central Texas and recently represented

Allstate agents in Washington, D.C. advocating for an End to Domestic Violence.

SARAH FRANKENFELD, CHAPTER EXECUTIVE. Sarah received her BBA in Marketing from

the University of Texas at Austin. She has been with FPA Austin as Chapter Executive for four

years. Previously, Sarah worked in Corporate Sales & Event Planning at the Four Seasons Hotel

Austin, as part of their opening staff and has served in sales and marketing positions in the bank-

ing and real estate industry.

Sarah has also lent her organizational and planning skills to her children’s schools and activities

over the years. She and her husband, Ken, are the proud parents of Kevin, 23, Kyle, 20 and

KATHERINE ZAMORA, GOLF COMMITTEE. Katherine is the Director of Brokerage Operations

at Per Stirling Group. She began her career in 1996 with a small boutique firm in Austin, later

moving to a NYSE firm with Fleet Bank Boston. In 2005 she transitioned to the independent

model specializing in Financial Planning and Wealth Management.

Katherine is a graduate of St. Edward’s University and has called Austin home for most of her life.

She is married to Day and has 4 grown children and 4 grandchildren, one of whom is serving in

the US Air Force. Katherine volunteers with Mobile Loaves and Fishes and ECHO (Ending Home-

lessness Coalition) serving on the Donations committee

KELLY COOPER: Kelly Cooper was raised in Austin and began working for his dad at Cooper Graci & Co. After finishing his undergraduate degree at Stephen F. Austin, Kelly joined Strategic Results, Inc., a wealth management firm. As a licensed insurance agent, he completed his Series 7/63 licensure in 2012. Kelly anticipates he will acquire his Certified Financial Planner licensure this fall.

When not in the office, Kelly spends his time serving several organizations including the Young

Men’s Business League (YMBL) and the Boy Scouts Capital Area Council. Kelly is the YMBL’s
