I know a lot about sentences! Letters come together to make a word, and words come together to make a sentence. I love reading, too. There are a lot of books in this world. I think I want to read 100 of them.”

We appreciate that our school is trying to meet Kai’s needs in different ways. I feel directly involved in what my son is learning. While he’s made great progress this year, we hope that he explores different things, and goes out of his comfort zone. Whether he becomes a scientist or a pastry chef, we just want him to be happy doing it.”

I want my students to be well-informed and responsible citizens. I want them to be resourceful and have the ability to think. I’m more interested in how they think than in how they get the right answers. With LEAP, I get to experience professional development with my colleagues teaching 1st and 3rd grade, who I wouldn’t normally meet with. Every week, I know what and how students are learning before they get to my class, and what I need to do to prepare my students for the next school year.”

This year is a goal-setting year for me. I want to get better at computer science, at writing stories, and at feeling good. We learned Second Step in second grade to help with our emotional feelings. It’s called social emotional learning. If you feel down or angry or sad, you can take belly breaths. It helps me understand my emotions and concerns better, and it helps me calm down.”

My biggest hope for our 4th graders is to identify the greatness within themselves. The more we expose them to the world outside of their neighborhood, the more they will yearn for greatness. You can see it on their faces when we take them to museums in DC, or on ski trips out of state. Of course we have books, but academics extend far beyond just math and reading. What are they experiencing that will take them to another level?”

I want to be an important person in life. I want a good life for my family, and to protect them and give back to them. I keep my two younger brothers close because I know they look up to me, and they know I’ll be there for them no matter what. I want them to never give up, to always try, and learn to be someone in life.”

Quiero ser una persona importante en la vida. Quiero una buena vida para mi familia, protegerlos y contribuirles. Mantengo a mis dos hermano/as menores cerca porque ellos/as me admiran y saben que estaré ahí para ellos/as pase lo que pase. I want all of our 6th graders to be successful in high school because of the three years they spend here. We start every day with a morning circle where we do shout outs, announcements, and talk about our focus for the day. We want them to take ownership of their learning, and we encourage them to be organized about things like lockers, assignments, and communicating with parents about homework. We’re helping them navigate becoming young adults.”

You get more opportunities in middle school, like volunteering and joining clubs, which helps prepare you for high school. The broadcast media program has been a great opportunity for me because I’m thinking about going into journalism. I even got to fly to Los Angeles to cover the NAACP awards, which was really special because they honored people of color. I hope to learn even more about myself and my interests before I go to high school.”

A global education helps you be aware of people different from you, and gives you different experiences. Brookland helps me better understand the world by giving me new perspectives. We get to take classes like humanities, art, and language, and it opens up your mind. I’ve taken Chinese since 6th grade, and I’ve learned a lot about Chinese culture. I hope Brookland keeps growing even more after I’ve moved on to high school.”

In 9th Grade Academy, we equip our students with the tools, rituals, and routines they need in high school. By focusing on those skills, we can reduce the learning gap between middle and high school, and help them feel more comfortable in a new environment. We want them to nurture relationships with their classmates and teachers, to know who to go to for help, and to start building their resumés with afterschool activities. Our hope is that any child who comes through our 9th Grade Academy can be successful.”

We are on a journey toward college, and the college readiness events at Coolidge help my son and his friends gain exposure to what’s available. I want Bashir to be successful in whatever he wants to do. My dream is that he leads with integrity and honesty, and that he represents his family and the good in society. I hope that he works diligently on his dreams, and that in the end, he’s proud of the struggles he’s endured.”
