Early Love for CeramicsThe very first ceramic that Keith Brymer Jones ever made was nearly forty years ago at the start of secondary school. Mr Mortman, Keith’s art teacher, handed Keith a lump of clay and asked him to make something creative with it. Keith carefully crafted a pottery owl which received great praise from Mr Mortman. Considering this was the first praise that Keith had ever received from a teacher and he loved the malleability and escapism of manipulating clay – he was hooked and knew he wanted to be a potter!

Throughout secondary school, Keith’s love for ceramics thrived and he eagerly took any opportunity he got to be in the workshop – break time, lunchtime, after school and even before school! Keith even used to sneak off and bunk his lessons to go to the Victoria and Albert Museum where he would look at the ceramics and draw them.

Ceramics CareerOn completing school, Keith stuck an advert in the Ceramic Review… ‘young, enthusiastic 18-year-old seeks apprenticeship in pottery’. Sure enough, the owners of Harefield Pottery read the ad and offered Keith a job as their clay boy. A clay boy shovels clay, cleans floors and prepares clay. This was the beginning of Keith ceramics career – he really did start from the bottom! Keith stayed at Harefield Pottery learning specialist handcraft skills and working his way up the ranks for 5 years, when his boss decided to relocate to an unused

RAF base located 20 miles north of Inverness. With the active social life expected of an energetic young man (in a punk band too), Keith decided to politely decline his boss’s invitation to join them and stayed in London to set up his first studio in Highgate. From this studio Keith handmade large orders, completing up to 1000 pots in a day, for a whole string of large retailers including Laura Ashley, Heals, Monsoon, Habitat and Conran to name just a few. It was here, in his first studio, that Keith became to develop his now iconic Word Range. Keith continued handmaking ceramics to order until 2008 when he met his business partner Dominic Speelman. Keith joined Dominic’s company, MAKE International, as a Director and Head of Design. Keith set up a new studio, a converted bakery, in Whitstable on the Kent coastline. Keith continued to design every single item on his potter’s wheel before he took a prototype to China for his team of full-time colleagues employed by MAKE International to mass produce. Keith still visits the factories at least twice a year, working on the factory floor to ensure the same stringent quality as his prototype is maintained. Every item in the Word Range is hand-embellished and checked by quality control three times. As MAKE International grew Keith expanded his Word Range, added collaborative ranges working with other designers and started working with different ceramic types and new materials.

Nowadays, Keith’s Word Range contains 500 products, is distributed and sold in over forty

countries and has a large and loyal following. Keith has stayed true to his roots and the Word Range still follows Keith’s original design philosophy from all those years ago ‘to create simple yet stylish products which are pleasing to the eye, practical in the modern home and, above all, make people happy!’

Keith’s skill and expertise in ceramic and design are now highly recognised and respected as he has judged and demonstrated in front of millions on BBC2’s The Great Pottery Throw Down.

Did you know that Keith was in a punk band?In his twenties, Keith was the lead singer of a successful punk band called ‘The Wigs’. They had a regular slot on the radio and used to tour the country.

Did you know that Keith was once a dancer and dreamed of a career in ballet?Up until Keith was eighteen he was a serious dancer and saw his future in ballet. Sadly, Keith’s feet were measured and he was told that he would grow too big to be a ballet dancer… so Keith had to give up the dream!

WORDWhat’s in a…

The Word Range is a collection of super white porcelain ceramics which feature colourful, hand-stamped words in retro, typewriter font. Keith has been carefully

refining and expanding his Word Range for over twenty years.

The origins of using words as a design concept stem from Keith’s dyslexic tendency to initially view words as a shape rather than read their meaning.

Common in people with dyslexia, Keith’s brain interacts with the word as a shape so it made perfect sense to him to decorate a ceramic with a word. The first

word that Keith stamped on a bucket mug was ‘Love’ as he believes it’s the most important word however his favourite word is ‘hot’ as he adores its visual symmetry.

Keith’s been busily adding new words to this year’s collection


Scion burst onto the scene back in 2012 as the newest member of the Harlequin family. The word Scion has two meanings, a ‘young shoot or twig’ and a ‘descendent from a notable family’, so it’s the perfect name for the brand!Scion Living was conceived to fill a gap in the market for unique, vibrant and reasonably priced home products. The brand really kicked off when one of the Scion designers drew a little orange fox – Mr Fox was created and rapidly became Scion’s most iconic design. Followed later by the arrival of Spike the hedgehog, the distinctive style of Scion Living aims to provide fresh ideas for modern living. Now with many more patterns and new characters, Scion living continues to expand.

The Scion designers work in their large studio in Leicestershire. Their delightful designs are firstly placed on fabric and wallpaper before being later partnered with specialist manufacturers under licence. MAKE International owns the license for Scion ceramics, glassware and tableware and produces Scion mugs, egg cups, espresso cups, glasses, placemats and coasters. Mr Fox and friends can also be found on things like bed linen, rugs, towels, bathroom accessories and much more under other licenses.

Tatty Devine, the playful statement jewellery brand, is the creation of co-founders Rosie and Harriet. Working and designing from their studio in East London,

Rosie and Harriet are responsible for over 300 new jewellery designs each year and have received an MBE for their contribution to fashion. Their fun, standout designs incorporate everything from wildlife to astronomy, art, feminism and

food and have had a loyal following of lifelong fans for nearly 20 years.


Started in 1999 by founders Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden, Tatty Devine is the world’s destination brand for playful, acrylic statement jewellery. Designed in East London and made in Kent, their standout jewellery is all about expressing yourself in a fun and distinctive way… ‘Be yourself, have fun and make a statement!’.

Friends for over two decades, Rosie and Harriet met when they both attended Chelsea School of Art to study Fine Art. Prior to that, Rosie grew up on the Isle of Wight and Harriet grew up in Rochester, Kent. Both were raised on a healthy diet of craft with homemade clothes being the norm. From a young age, they felt destined to explore a creative world and attend art school. Although they studied Fine Art, both Harriet and Rosie were most attracted to the act of making because of its tactility and importance within culture.

On graduation from art school, Rosie and Harriet moved in together and neither one was interested in getting a ‘proper’ job. This is when Tatty Devine was born selling leather wrist cuffs. Harriet stumbled across some leather bags discarded outside an upmarket furniture store one night on her way home from the pub. Together Rosie and Harriet made leather wrist cuffs from the bags and sold them at Portobello and Spitalfields markets. They were selling out quickly every week and as time went on Rosie and Harriet got more experimental embellishing the cuffs with studs and crystals. After a while, they got bored of wristbands and started experimenting with found objects such

as plectrums. Harriet knew lots of boys in bands and after band practice, like a musical magpie, she would pick up the discarded plectrums, punch holes in them and thread them onto chains and earrings. This is where the iconic Tatty Devine plectrum brand symbol came from.

In 2001, Rosie and Harriet learnt how to laser cut acrylic to make unique, fun statement jewellery and that’s when things really took off! Tatty Devine has steadily grown ever since. Tatty Devine was shaped by Rosie and Harriet’s frustration at the absence of exciting jewellery available. Everything felt commercialised, mass produced and poor quality, so Rosie and Harriet satisfied the public hunger by making their own bright, funky jewellery… ‘we’ve always loved to stand out and make a statement and what better way than to wear massive jewellery?!’

Nowadays, Tatty Devine are based in their studio on Brick Lane, East London and have received an MBE for their contribution to fashion. Their designs start as a conversation between Rosie and Harriet with Harriet annotating in her sketch book. The drawings are then laser cut to make fantastic jewellery. All the Tatty Devine jewellery is manufactured in Kent by a skilled team of expert makers who are passionate about Perspex and are extensively trained by Tatty Devine. Tatty Devine have an extensive following of lifelong fans who have been with

them since the very beginning – they still love what they are doing and collecting!

In 2017, Rosie and Harriet began speaking to MAKE International’s Head of Design, Keith Brymer Jones about a possible collaborative ceramics range. Rosie and Harriet both love ceramics and have always collected interesting pieces and Keith understood the brand and was excited by its potential. Therefore, they agreed to work together combining Keith’s expert knowledge of ceramic shape and form and Tatty Devine’s brilliance in contemporary, quirky design. They chose eight of Tatty Devine’s signature designs from their Classic Collection and produced eight mugs and two vases. Each mug is crafted from porcelain, has a capacity of 350ml, features a coloured interior and gold lustre brand stamp. In keeping with the Tatty Devine jewellery and brand, the ceramics are eye-catching and eccentric with a punky twist and perfect to add statement charm to any home.

Today Rosie lives in Stoke Newington with her husband and two sons whilst Harriet lives in a mid-century block by Victoria Park, London with her daughter. Both flats are full to the brim with stuff as Rosie and Harriet love collecting things! Harriet is amazing at tracking down oversized ceramic objects and Rosie has a pretty impressive record collection, from Girl Ray to Jim O’Rourke!

Unfortunately, our Tatty Devine mugs are not microwave safe as there’s metal in the gold lustre brand stamp… worth it for a bit of gold though right?

Bert & Buoy, the contemporary nautical brand, was created by designer and illustrator Bert Fowler who is now based on the South Devon coast.Bert had pondered creating a fresh, modern take on nautical for a long time but eventually decided that if he was going to do it then there’d be no procrastination so he set himself a goal of creating the brand and producing the first collection within six weeks! Bert was keen to shift nautical away from cliché anchors, buckets and spades into a fresh, new, contemporary direction. In summer 2015, Bert & Buoy was born and launched with a pop up store at Dartmouth Royal Regatta. The initial reaction was incredible, the store buzzed with art lovers, interior designers and homeware buyers all eager to take home a cool, creative slice of the British coast! It was obvious that Bert & Buoy was something special so Bert spent the rest of 2015 in a flurry of activity… creating a wider collection, building an online store and developing relationships with gallery owners and independent retailers across the UK.

In 2017, Bert and MAKE International found each other at a trade show. It immediately resonated well with Bert that MAKE had the passion for nurturing British design and a focus on creating exclusive, contemporary products that could take his brand to the next level. Bert began working with MAKE’s Head of Design and renowned ceramicist, Keith Brymer Jones, to collaboratively develop an entirely innovative and unique Bert & Buoy mug. Combining Bert’s coastal surface designs and Keith’s expert knowledge in ceramic shape and form, the new mug is meticulously crafted from light grey stained porcelain to mimic a beach pebble. With a capacity on 350ml, it features a quirky, unglazed base with a stylish, exposed glaze line and a detail brand stamp.

Nowadays, Bert lives in South Devon with his wife and two young children and works from his studio overlooking the shoreline. He finds his inspiration for the Bert & Buoy designs from his beautiful surroundings of the British coast – the vivid colours, weathered objects, prevalent nature and wildlife and iconic places.

Outside of work, Bert loves nothing more than foraging for rusty gold at flea markets, chandlery stores and little independents tucked away in the depths of Devon. He collects everything from vintage shop letters and hand-painted signs to mid-century chairs and textiles, old fishing ropes and buoys. He can also be found free running or walking along the stunning South West coastline, barbequing on the beach and spending time with his family and friends in his favourite haunts in Torbay, Totnes and Dartmouth.

Every part of the collection starts off as an original work of art inspired by life on the British Coast. This shifts nautical homeware from twee clichés, anchors and buckets and spades to a new, fresh, contemporary direction; just call it Nautical Niceness.

Sukie, a brand inspired by nature, folk art and printed ephemera collected from worldwide travels, was created by designer and illustrators, Darrell and Julia.

Now based on the South cost near Eastbourne, Darrell and Julia both grew up away from the sea although have always been imaginative and creative. Darrell was a Hertfordshire boy who

enjoyed spending his days digging around for creepy crawlies, making models and painting his fantasy figures. Julia was raised in North West London and loved nothing more than drawing, typing stories on an old typewriter and making useful items out of sellotape and paper – her greatest achievement… an entire doll’s house complete with furniture and characters!

Both Darrell and Julia went to the University of Brighton to study for a BA in Illustration which is where they met. Following university, Julia began working as part of the buying team for stationary and gifts at House of Fraser and Liberty whilst Darrell went on to do a MA at The Royal College of Art. For his graduation show, back in 1999, Darrell exhibited a wall of handmade notebooks as the centrepiece. These notebooks were made from various papers

that he had collected over the two years of his course… envelopes, scrap paper, unwanted artwork and packaging, all destined for the recycling bin. Darrell started by constructing sketchbooks for his own use but by the time of his graduation show, Darrell had amassed quite a number of notebooks. When put together on the clean white wall of the exhibition, he realised he had created an appealing product

and Sukie was born. He expected to sell a few during the show however his notebooks received incredible interest from some prominent stylists and buyers. The rescued paper notebooks ended up in top boutiques in London and New York and home store Habitat placed an order for 24,000 and commissioned a line of stationery. It was at this point, in 2000, Darrell teamed up with his then girlfriend (now wife), Julia, to set about fulfilling these large orders. They journeyed to India to seek advice from some of Julia’s contacts from when she was a stationery and gift buyer. The books were adapted so they no longer needed to be handmade and could be bound using a few simple processes. They were sourced from end of print runs and packaging from factories in Delhi, paper that would usually be discarded so still ‘rescued paper

Sukie’s quirky designs started off life on the covers of their ‘Rescued Paper Notebooks’ and ‘Travel Journals’, made from recycled and discarded papers. Now on ceramics, the Sukie mugs retain their contemporary recycled charm.

Nnotebooks’ - the same ones that Sukie sell today! Following an incredibly successful trade show in 2001, where Darrell and Julia first met MAKE International’s Keith Brymer Jones, Sukie was recognised as a fun, new company offering exciting stationery. The company exploded in popularity, gained momentum and has had a large, loyal following ever since. Sukie now has a vast collection of quirky notebooks as well as printed textiles, stationery, gifts, homeware and fashion which they sell across 20 countries worldwide. MAKE International have worked collaboratively with Sukie to develop the first ever Sukie Animal Folk ceramic range.

look of the brand and its potential as a fun new brand for MAKE. The new Sukie mugs are made from stoneware high in iron so when they are fired they produce a warm, organic feel in keeping with the Sukie brand. Each mug features one of Sukie’s friendly forest characters, a trendy exposed glaze line and a Sukie stamp.

Nowadays, Darrell and Julia work from their studio on the South coast continuing to innovate new styles of notebook using different printing techniques. They’re inspired by the antique printing equipment and book presses in their studio and their huge collection of reference books and ephemera, mostly picked up in flea markets and second-hand bookstores.

Outside of work, Darrell and Julia have a Sukie family – three children and a labradoodle – who all live just outside of Eastbourne in their 1930s house with beautiful views of the South Downs National Park. They all enjoy family walks, going rock pooling at the local beach and exploring flea markets.
