How do I get NHS Dental Treatment?

There are 40 NHS dental practices in Westminster. This booklet includes a list of contact details for these practices. You can also find the dentist nearest to you by using the NHS choices website: www.nhs.uk/dentists.

To sign up with a dentist, telephone them first and ask them if they are accepting new NHS patients. If the practice is taking on new NHS patients, they will invite you for an initial examination and agree a course of treatment with you.

What treatment should I expect to be provided under the NHS?

You will be able to have all treatments provided under the NHS that your dentist feels is clinically necessary in order to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy. If your dentist says that you need a particular type of treatment, you should not be asked to pay for it privately.

How much will it cost?

If you normally pay for NHS dental treatment, there will be three standard charges which may change in April of each year. The amount you pay will depend on the treatment you need to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Eligibility for free and reduced cost dental care

You will receive free services from your NHS dentist if, when the treatment starts, you are:

• Aged under 18

• Aged under 19 and in full-time education

• Pregnant or have had a baby in the previous 12 months

• Staying in an NHS hospital and your treatment is carried out by the hospital dentist, or you are an NHS hospital dental service outpatient (however, you may have to pay for your dentures or bridges)

• Receiving Income Support, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, Universal Credit

• Entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate

• Named on a valid HC2 certificate.

If you are named on a valid HC3 certificate you might get some help towards the cost of your NHS dental treatment.

Dental Charges

Band 1 £18.50 (check-up and advice. If necessary, x-rays, scale and polish)

Band 2 £50.50 (any treatment covered within band 1 plus additional treatments such as, fillings, root canal treatment or extractions)

Band 3 £219 (any treatment covered within band 1 & 2 PLUS more complex procedures e.g. crown, bridges and dentures)

Urgent treatment £18.50

(NHS dental charges exact from 1 April 2014)

You will not be exempt from paying because you receive Incapacity Benefit, contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance, contribution-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit or Pension Credit savings credit, when paid on their own. Medical conditions do not exempt patients from payment for dental treatment.

Your dentist will ask for evidence that you are entitled to free NHS dental treatment.

Use form HC1 to claim for full (HC2) or partial (HC3) help with NHS dental costs. HC1 forms are available from your local Jobcentre Plus office or by calling Help with Health Costs on 0845 850 1166. For more information, download the HC11 leaflet from www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk.
