Following the recent resignations of Peter Kirk and KarenRoberts from Findon Parish Council, the Council now has twovacancies that it would like to consider filling as soon aspracticable. The recent purchase of the Village Shopdemonstrated the deep seated community spirit which exists inthe Village and we need two new Parish Councillors toembrace this in pursuing the many activities with which theParish Council is involved. There’s an autumnal feel to the air in themornings and evenings now although as Iwrite the sun is warm and the sky anunbroken blue. If ‘old wives tales’ are tobe believed, we’re in for a hard winterjudging by the bounty of the hedgerows! Idon’t remember ever seeing such aharvest of huge blackberries before, branches are heavy with sloes anddamsons, hedges sparkle scarlet withrosehips and hawthorn berries, andapples, pears and plums seem abundanttoo this year. Farm harvests are safelygathered in and I for one feel ready to givethanks again at our Harvest Festivals(September 24th at Patching Church andSeptember 17th at Findon).

Harvest Season is a time for looking backwith thanksgiving for what our vegetableplots, orchards and farms have yielded, also for planning ahead for the next year’scrops, perhaps thinking what could beimproved by a little extra compost beingdug in. Maybe it is also a good time topause and take stock of our own lives. What, over this last year, have weachieved? Could we have done somethingdifferently, or better? Here in leafySussex, we are so fortunate, we have allthat we need and more, surrounded as weare by stunning countryside. How often dowe stop to give thanks for what we have?Do we consider ways in which we mightshare something of what we enjoy withthose who have so little? Our FindonHarvest offerings (both from the SchoolHarvest Service and our Parish Church)are given to the Worthing ChurchesHomeless Project. These donations, alongwith others from the Worthing area, provide a much needed stock of food and

basic toiletries for use at the DayCentre and Hostels through the year.It would be wonderful if we coulddouble the donations we sent lastyear! Tins or packets (make sure thefood is ‘in date’!) can be left at theback of the church or in the Rectoryporch. Homelessness is sadly agrowing problem, which can affectanyone at any time and the WorthingCentre relies totally on voluntarydonations.

Looking further afield, our Diocese islinked to Sierra Leone, wheremudslides have devastated lives andlivelihoods. The Diocesan Harvestappeal will doubtless send extra aid tothe stricken people there in addition tosupporting communities across Eastand West Africa. Any donations wouldbe welcome through the church herein Findon, Clapham and Patching orcan be made directly online throughoptions given on the DiocesanwebsiteChichester.anglican.org/appeal; thankyou.

Finally I would like to thank everyonewho sponsored my skydive back inJuly. We still don’t have a final total,as there are still donations coming in,but we have raised about £2,500including online giving, which isfantastic, and I thoroughly enjoyed ittoo! Why not join us for our nextcoffee morning in Findon Church on16th September to look at the lovelystained glass windows which willbenefit from our fundraising!

Every blessing, Helena

From the Rectory

Sheep at the Fair this year. Graham LangfordPlans are well in advance with the sheep fair and sheep entries have been goodagain this year with a larger number from Essex and Kent than in previous years.Nine new farms will be participating for the first time and again many youngerpeople are bringing their sheep which is great news as they are the future atshows in years to come.

Every year we have new breeds that have not been at the show in the last 11years and this year we have North Country Cheviots, and Balwen.

We again focus on wool as it is a commodity we should be using more in our dailylives. Dave Tester a local farmer at Patching will be demonstrating Shearing; wehave a fleece competition judged by Sue Blacker who owns a mill for processingfleeces in Cornwall, 6 local spinners who will be pleased to answer your questionson getting started and many finished products. There will also be fleeces to buy atthe fleece tent.

Judging will be starting at 9-30am due to the number of entries, the supremeChampionship will be around midday, followed by Wool on the Hoof. At approx.1.45 pm the judging of the Young handler competitions will take place. We haveover 30 young handlers taking part this year in 3 age groups, 8 and under, 9 to 11,and 12 and over. At 3pm we plan to parade into the main arena when the trophieswill be presented. Then come and see the Alpaca’s in the sheep rings from3.30pm.

New for 2017 is a quiz for children. As you enter the animal area, there will be astand where each child can take a quiz paper about sheep. All the answers will befound around the sheep and animal area.Enjoy the day and Come and see the Balwen sheep.

We need two helpers at the Sheep Endon Sat 9th from 7am..

Please contact Su Pearce on 07476201501

Congratulations to Findon’s own Tina CookTina was part of the Team GB eventing team that took gold in the EuropeanChampionships held over one weekend mid August in Strzegom, Poland. An impressive performance by the GB team in the cross-country saw them leadgoing into the final showjumping stage. Tina and two other GB team riders put inclear rounds to secure GB's first European gold since 2009.Tina, who was partnered by her horse ‘Billy The Red’ throughout the event, said:"We were really wanting that gold. It's been a few years and it's fantastic to beback in this position."Although the story was carried in the Worthing Herald, shamefully there was littlenational media coverage of this success - as usual the beginning of the Footballseason seemed to take precedence over any other sporting news.

Update on Shop/POBecky FaganThe newly painted bright red post boxthat stands outside our village shopserves as a symbol of things to come. Since the community became the proudowners of the building which will onceagain become our village shop and postoffice, there has been great excitementamongst just about everyone I speak to,and we all eagerly await its reopening.Progress has been made, albeit not asmuch as we might have liked. I'm sureanyone who has ever undertaken anykind of building project or renovation willknow that nothing is ever quite as simpleor quick to do as we imagine. We arecurrently awaiting a visit by Post Officecontractors, and until they have donevital electrical work we can't proceedvery much further. One of my fellowcommittee members likened the PostOffice to a big Victorian Machine, incredibly well put together, solid andreliable but not swift to move or react. However the delays have given theinterim management team some time toturn their attention to projects other thanthe renovation. As well as facilitating therepainting of the aforementioned postbox, Auds, the new manager, has alsooverseen the opening of the newspaperstall. While the stall had been sellingpapers and some magazines from 7am-10am every day, this has now beenchanged to 7am-11am. In spite ofSmiths News' determination that thevillage shop should only receive 8 copiesof the Telegraph, the stall has been reallywell received and supported byresidents. Huge thanks go to Liz andJulian for working unpaid so that the stallcould be possible and enabling us to takejust a little step closer to things returningto normal. Also, thanks to everyone whohas been so patient when we have not

been sent the correct number of papers.Thankfully I now believe that this hasbeen rectified.Amongst other achievements, Helen, ourTreasurer, has found a bank that ishappy to recognise our company statusas a mutual benefit society - this was nosmall task. We now also have a fullcomplement of contractors able to helpus with the refit, subject to the PostOffice doing their bit, so you can expectto see workmen on site regularly fromnow on.Earlier in August we had the chance tomeet some of the wonderful volunteers atour first volunteer meeting in the villagehall. It was great to hear suchenthusiasm and to get feedback onvisions for the shop and what peoplewould like see sold. It was hearteningthat so many of the suggestions were inline with our initial thoughts and hopes. Lots of people were keen to see thereturn of a good selection of greetingscards, artisan bread, nice deli typeproduce and as well as a good range oflocally produced goods in alongside allthe standard basics. One of our favouritecommittee tasks has been testing outsome of this local produce. We werevery excited to receive some samplesfrom Angmering-based producer AlisonDriver, who owns and runs 'LoadedLoaves'. These ingenious little breadloaves look very simple from the outsidebut once cut open, reveal a hiddensurprise. Alison will be coming to theFindon Sheep Fair and so I hope you'llhave the chance to try them for yourself.Fingers crossed, by next month'snewsletter, we will have a date in sightfor our grand opening. In the meantime, the management committee are alwaysglad to receive suggestions and ideasfrom the community. Please [email protected] withyour your thoughts.

The shop is now open 07.00 until 11.00hrs for newspaper collections.

We have had another busy year at thehall. In the spring we hosted a CoffeeMorning for residents to view the plansfor the proposed extension, and tomeet the Architect. The extension will replace the existingmeeting room to the rear of theexisting hall, with a small galleykitchen, toilets, and store for existingvillage groups, with level access forwheelchair users to all areas. Weawait planning decision from SDNP.In March we welcomed Findon’s ownbranch of ‘Men in Sheds’, fourteenresidents signed up to join. This grouphave already re-furbished somegarden furniture for the Hall, and havetaken some commissions for work. They meet on Tuesdays andThursdays from 10am.Popular events include the Lamb toLoom Coffee Morning, Film Nightswhich run from September to Marcheach year, Christmas Fairs, and ofcourse the Findon Fun Dog Showwhich is in its third year. Our Mexican Feast & Quiz was a sellout in March, so look out for theposters advertising The German BeerFest & Quiz scheduled for 28th

October.

Sadly we heard the news that theCissbury Players have dissolved theirorganisation as they were no longerfinancially viable. Their dwindlingnumbers meant that they were unableto form a cast for their Julyperformance. This amateur dramaticgroup, under the strong leadership ofMrs Ann Burfoot for over 30 years, produced 3 productions annually.Earlier this year Mr & Mrs Burfoot leftthe Village, and I am sure they weremuch missed by the group. Many ofthe residents of Findon have fondmemories of past productions. We have their old shed to demolish, with it’s contents of old scenery, andprops. I have organised a workingparty for Sunday 3rd Septemberstarting 10am. If anyone would like tovolunteer to help with this clear up,please just turn up on the day.Film Nights resume on 22nd Sept with“Sully”. I think it is so sad when a new baby arrives and then the cat has to go.We have three cats in that have all come in for the same reason. One is only ayear old, the owners treated him like their baby called him Cuddles but when theirreal baby arrived said the cat was jealous of the baby so he had to go. He is soupset, crying for attention all day, he doesn't know what he has done wrong (he didwee in the pram.) Another hissed at the new baby so had to go. Another ownersaid it would be too risky to keep the cat in case the cat lays on the baby's faceand suffocates the baby. One cat came in this week because the baby will becrawling soon so it would be unhygienic to have a litter tray in the house. It became compulsory to microchip all dogs this year, and it has made such adifference. When people bring a lost dog in to us all we have to do is put thescanner over the dog to get the number and then ring Petlog to get the name andaddress and phone number of the owner. If only it was the same rule for cats. Wehave so many calls every week from owners who have lost their cats that are notmicrochipped. But our biggest headache is stray cats that are not chipped. Wehave so many, we have to wait to see if they are claimed and after 7 days takethem to the Vets to be microchipped, and neutered if they need it, and then theycan be re-homed.One young tom cat was in the Vets for three days with nowhere to go, a straypicked up in the local supermarket. The Vets said all the other rescues were full so

we were his last chance. We hadhim neutered last week andnamed him Buddy. He is sofriendly and relaxed. Every oneof the volunteers makes a fussof him. It is a big problem whensomeone picks up a lost cat andtakes it to the Vet to see if thecat is chipped. If it isn't they aretold to take it back to where theyfound it because they cannotleave it at the Vets! People arethen frantically phoning all thecat rescues, who are all full. Our cat pens are always full.Thankfully we have lots ofvisitors looking for cats on ouropen days every Sunday. From Stacey.

Findon Updated Neighbourhood Plan (Housing)Public ConsultationOn Wednesday 16 August, after a small army of volunteers had delivered leafletsto the whole village, almost 200 villagers visited the Public Consultation Day in theVillage Hall. On display were details of all the housing site options researched bythe Updated Neighbourhood Plan Working Group: Elm Rise Paddock & SoldiersField House (both proposed by the South Downs National Park PlanningAuthority), Monarch’s Way field (northern part, with the Glebelands), the former firestation, land north of Nightingales, land north of The Quadrangle, Pony Farm andAtalanta/Mayland on the A24 by-pass). Visitors were invited to study each optionand then rank all eight potential sites in order of preference, either on paper orelectronically on tablets provided. Voting was also available on-line up until theend of August. The details of all these sites can be found on the parish council andvillage community websites. A summary of everyone’s feedback will be publishedin the next Findon News.

Findon Village Garden Association Sally EvansThe weather at the Findon VillageGardens Association Summer Show on5th August reflected this summer as awhole – ranging from a cool, wet start, through warm sunshine and back to awet finish. The vagaries of the weatherdid nothing to dent the enthusiasm ofthe entrants, visitors and volunteersthough. There were over 250 entriesfrom 36 members, ranging from astersto violas; beans to tomatoes; biscuits toWelsh cakes; handicrafts, flowerarranging and photography.Trophies were awarded in the variouscategories and winners were NormanAllcorn, Dorothy Barber, Sue Bell, MoBowen, Sally Evans, Joan Francis,Emma Greaney, Stuart Hilton, ShirleyHobden, Betty Lewis, Richie Line, SallyMcNiff, Evelyn Stanford.Stalls included the ever-popular raffle, tombola and home-made cakes. Men inSheds brought along their carefullycrafted wares; and a first for our show(and proving to be a big success) wasthe “pre-loved” tools stall. From thenumber of tools donated, it seems thatthe members enjoy having a clear out oftheir garages and sheds!

As always we are very grateful to themany people who donated cakes, plantsand tombola prizes. Things never move quickly when you wantthem to. Then it all happens at once. Asthe Traffic, Environment and People (TEP)sub- committee of Findon Parish Councilknow all too well - the process of makingthings happen is not always timecompliant and neither is money availablewhen you need it. However, there issome good news.As regular readers will know West SussexCounty Council has agreed to introduce a20 mph limit in the village. Similarly theywill improve the corner of the Gun andSchool Hill with a new pedestrian strip(albeit a narrow one because of the roadwidth). They will also erect gateways intothe four main entrances to the village, complete with 20mph signs. The very topof School Hill will also have yellow lines. This work is scheduled for January 2018.However, the TEP group have also beenworking on a Phase 2 development whichinvolves a submission to South DownsNational Park Authority for funding via theSDNPA Community Infrastructure Levy. This is just as well – because the SDNPAhave written very recently to all ParishCouncils saying that they must submit anexpression of interest and project outlinebefore 29th September if they want to beconsidered.Cllr John Havenhand informs FindonNews that a proposal for a Phase 2 bid toSDNPA will, as a consequence, be put tothe Parish Council at the next meeting on11th September. From the perspective ofvillage residents the outline bid, ifsuccessful, would improve the visualattractiveness and safety of the Squarevia re surfacing, seating and signage andprobably involve a slightly extendedConservation area. Secondly it wouldimprove visitor parking, by using some ofthe land behind the village hall toaccommodate about 20 additional carspaces, plus four extra spaces by Pond

Green/ Stable Lane. But most importantlyit would also aim to promote Findon’sheritage and gateway location to theSouth Downs National park for the benefitof visitors as well as residents andbusinesses. This would require a visitorinformation point/ centre incorporatingguides on walking on the South Downs, the heritage and history of Findon andinformation about Cissbury, Chanctonburycircles and the flora and fauna on theSouth Downs.John points out that because of the shortnotice required to submit an outlineproposal there is not much time for wideconsultation. However, the ideas havebuilt on the feedback from the publicmeeting held over a year ago when DavidHutchison (TEP group) gave apresentation which filled the Village Hall. For example, the changes to the Squareare intended to introduce the concept of“Shared Space“. This is an attempt, byappropriate road surfacing, to create asignificant and different visual effect whichwill signify to motorists that this is notmerely a highway with no pavements, as itis currently configured, but an area wherepeople walking about now have priority.Unfortunately – it seems that the TEPgroup’s hopes to get support for afootpath from the Village Hall to the Gunhave not been successful as Highwaysconsiders the road is to narrow. However, a time limited restricted parkingzone may be considered in the centre ofthe village at a later date – if the additionalcar parking is made available behind thevillage Hall. If the Parish Council supportsthis outline bid at their 11th Septembermeeting a lot more information anddrawings will be available on the CouncilWeb site. It will not be too late to amendthe outline bid at that stage and, in anyevent, changes will be anticipated ifSDNPA support any or all of the outlineproposals.

The Cissbury PlayersOn 10th May 2017, The CissburyPlayers received, without warning orprior notice, from The Findon VillageHall Trust committee, an officialcontract for a new storage facility at theHall.

This lease stated that we needed tomove all our scenery and props out ofthe large store at the rear of the hallthat has been used for the past 32years, in addition to the costume storeupstairs, and move everything into oneof the new garage sheds that havebeen built on the grass to the side ofthe hall, by 1st June 2017.

As residents and long time users ofthat hall will know, the scenery storeand costume store has always beenused by the societies of the hall at nocost and were always freely given onthis understanding. So, to receive anofficial lease with a commercial rentattached with no warning came as ashock to us all.The new storage facility was in no waysuitable for our use, mainly due to itssmall size; with the best will in theworld, we estimated that we could onlyget one third of our belongings securedin a safe and appropriate manner. Thefurther financial constraint of acommercial rent was beyond ourreach.

It was therefore decided, after muchdiscussion that after over thirty years atthe hall, this was no longer the placefor us, which is a great shame asalthough we have no members left inthe village, The Cissbury Players havealways been a great friend to thevillage with stalls at the fete, theerection of Christmas decorations inthe hall, the stall at The Sheep Fair aswell as our three productions per yearwhich have always been very warmlyreceived by people in the village andbeyond.

In their quest to make Findon VillageHall thrive and to turn it into the ‘hub’ ofthe community, the current committeehave driven out one of their longeststanding groups, with the loss ofrevenue from the continuous use of thehall on a weekly basis for 9 months ofthe year.

Anyone still interested in local dramawill be pleased to know that we havebeen contacted by the committee atFerring Village Hall with an openinvitation to join them there, so localAm Dram still survives and the curtainwill go up in Ferring on some familiarfaces again in the future.
