Frances Lovell Oldham was born in Seattle, and was adirect descendant of George Washington's sister but moreabout that later. Before the war she was an editor atHarper's Bazaar and came to the UK to be fashion editor ofVogue. She married The Hon James Rodney and latermarried Captain Charles Gordon. Frances then marriedCaptain Alwyne Farquharson of Invercauld

Frances Farquharson was well-known for the innovativeoutfits she wore to the annual Braemar Gatherings and wasone of the first people to understand the design potential oftweed, and she also had a passion for tartan.

In the 1950's Frances Farquharson of Invercauld put hervery personal stamp on Braemar Castle; upgrading the softfurnishings, decorating many rooms in her favourite shadesof pink and yellow that was inspired by her great friend, thesurrealist designer Elsa Schiaparelli.

So many requests were received to see round the Castlethat in the 1960's, Captain Alwyne and Mrs Farquharsondecided to open Braemar to the public for the first time.The Castle remained open as an important visitor attractionfor the district until 2004.

Her entire wardrobe, from pre-war Parisian shoes andevening dresses to the flamboyant tweeds she wore inScotland, was donated to Aberdeen Art Gallery. Some ofher Schiaparelli hats are at the National Museum ofScotland in Edinburgh. Her flair for design combinestraditional tweed fabric with original, stylish design fromthe 1950's-1960's as can be seen in the photograph of thecouple outside Braemar.

The jewellery offered here accentuates her taste forScotland and the large 'Cairngorm' stones so often used inScottish jewellery. The large bangle and ring were believedto have been designed and made by Jamieson & Carry ofAberdeen; a firm that can trace their roots back over twohundred years. As her outfits were flamboyant, the jewellery

needed to be that bit bigger to be seen against the tweedand tartan outfits.

The family connection with George Washington's sister,Betty Washington Lewis, is interesting as a large silverserving dish made in Philadelphia belonging toWashington's sister has been passed down the femalefamily line and will now be offered for sale by the lastfemale descendant of the family in the spring. Thisimportant piece of Americana is of interest from not onlythe Washington connection but also the large size makes itan important piece of provincial American silver. It iscurrently being researched for sale.

The next 76 lots of jewellery form the major part of thecollection of jewellery belonging to the late Kate Whiteman.It is an interesting mixture, covering different styles,periods, countries and jewellers; almost a list of ingredientsfor a recipe for an interesting collection.

The word recipe is appropriate in this instance as Kate wasa respected food writer who edited books for the Rouxbrothers, Raymond Blanc and Pierre Koffman. She was alsothe author of over thirty cookery books herself. A career ofover thirty years covered many food fads and travel wasalso varied. Her grandmothe,r who was Italian, started offthe taste for gastronomic life and when Kate was left anumber of pieces of jewellery from her grandmother’sestate this probably started her varied collection ofjewellery.

The Georgian ruby and diamond ring (lot 109) itself is anattractive piece of period jewellery with added interest ofbeing an intaglio. This was possibly an inherited piece alongwith the Indian bangles, the princess ring and the otherantique pieces. Travel abroad; researching food would bringan interest in Greek and Roman art which was carriedthrough to the pieces by Ilias Lalalounis which are verymuch inspired by antiquity as well as the two gold coinsmounted as brooches.

More modern jewellers were favoured as being differentand bold in design. Stuart Devlin supplied the family with anumber of pieces of silver but there are two interestingitems of jewellery from his workshop that show hisversatility in materials and design. The long coloured goldchain of the standing figures made in the 1970’s if notinstantly recognised as Devlin would in current time

thought to have been inspired by Gormley. Theo Fennelldesigned and made the novelty brooch of the champagneflute (lot 118) with diamonds for the bubbles. Moreconventional pieces from his workshop are earrings andbangles set with various gems.

Time is always valuable and a good watch is essential; theJaeger le Coultre “Reverso” (lot 115) would cover day andevening wear as the swivel action has a diamond set facefor evening and plain for day wear. Longines, Baume etMercier, Chopard and Raymond Weil watches also formpart of the collection.

Kate’s legacy as an author will be around for many yearsthrough her books and I am sure her jewellery will beappreciated just as much for the variety, quality and flair.

Note:Ilias Lalaounis (b. 1920), was borninto a family of Goldsmiths andwatchmakers, joining the familybusiness, Zolotas, in 1940. As afourth generation jeweller,Lalaounis has earned a reputationfor creating luxurious gold jewellerythat offers a unique interpretation ofancient civilisation translated into amodern idiom. Lalaounis’ uniqueaesthetic is inspired by influences asdiverse as the Neolithic, Mycenaean,and Byzantine styles, while hiscreations are founded on a revival ofancient Greek jewellery techniques.

In 1969, Ilias Lalaounis pursued anindependent enterprise, and hiseponymous company was foundedas a separate entity. The newcompany produced a collection everysix months, with each collectionconsisting of about 150 pieces inboth 18 and 22K gold. Lalaounis’sregular use of pure gold helped todistinguish his work, and soonbranches were expanded throughEurope and in cities throughout theworld, including New York, Tokyoand Hong Kong. In 1993, thecompany’s workshops were movedto new, purpose-built facilities whilethe building was altered to house ajewellery museum.

Today the Ilias Lalaounis Museum’spermanent collection includes over4000 pieces of jewellery and microsculptures from over 50 collectionsdesigned by the museum’s founderbetween 1940 and 2000. AlthoughLalaounis has received many prizesfor his art, the most noteworthyhonour was bestowed by the FrenchAcademy of Fine Arts in 1990;Lalaounis remains the only jewellerever to be elected as a member ofthe Academy.

Note:Stuart Devlin (b. 1931) began his career as an art teacher in Australia,specialising in gold and silversmithing. In 1957 he obtained a post at the RoyalMelbourne Institute of Technology and studied for a Diploma of Art in gold andsilversmithing, after which he spent a two-year fellowship at ColumbiaUniversity, in the United States. Devlin returned to Australia to teach, but quicklyrose to fame in 1964 after winning a competition to design the first decimalcoinage in Australia. In 1965, he moved to London and opened a smallworkshop, in which he adapted and devised new techniques to produce a widevariety of textures and filigree forms. His popularity grew in London’s West End,where he held a prestigious showroom in Conduit Street between 1979 and 1985.Among his most popular commissions, Devlin has designed coins and medalsfor 36 countries throughout the world, including precious coins for the Sydney2000 Olympic Games. In 1982, Devlin was granted the Royal Warrant ofAppointment as Goldsmith and Jeweller to Her Majesty the Queen. Devlin wasalso made Prime Warden of the Goldsmith’s Company (1996-97). Certain enhancements, such asheating, are commonly used to improve colour or transparency in rubies and sapphires. Emeralds are also frequently treated, usually withoils or resin, for the same purpose. Other methods, including staining, coating or irradiation, may have been used on other gemstones. Theinternational jewellery trade has generally accepted these methods.

Heat enhancement of colour is usually permanent, however, in some cases, this may have an impact on the durability of the gemstone.Gemstones that have been oiled may require re-oiling after a number of years in order to retain their optimum appearance.

It is Lyon & Turnbull’s policy to obtain gemmological reports from internationally recognised gemmological laboratories describing certaingemstones sold by Lyon & Turnbull. However, please note that there may not be consensus between different laboratories on the degreesor types of treatment for any particular gemstone. Born of the St. Simonprogeny, Persimmon was bred andraced by Albert Edward, Prince ofWales (and afterward King EdwardVII). Persimmon made his debut atRoyal Ascot in the Coventry Stakes(1895), where he also earned thefirst of what would become a seriesof racing victories. Persimmon wenton to win the Richmond Stakes inthat same year, but the pinnacle ofthe stallion’s career came at the1896 Epsom Derby, wherePersimmon surged forward to beathis rival, St Frusquin, in a thrilling“neck and neck” showdown. Thisvictory acquired additionalsignificance as it was the first horserace ever to be filmed by Robert W.Paul and Birt Acres. Other major

wins included the 1896 St. Legerand Jockey Club Stakes, as well asthe 1897 Ascot Gold Cup and EclipseStakes. However, Persimmon’sAscot Gold Cup and Eclipse sweepcame with a price- the hard turf inboth races led to career-endinginjuries in his hocks, at which pointhe was retired from the track andsent back to the stallion paddocks ofSandringham, where his stud feewas set at 300 guineas. Note:James “Jimmy” McMenemy (1880-1965) accomplished a prolificfootball career that spanned overtwenty years with Celtic F.C. (1902-1920) and Partick Thistle F.C. (1920-23), in which he made 515appearances, scored 168 goals, andamassed numerous victories andhonours. During his time with CelticF.C., McMenemy was part of thelegendary squad that won the 1904Scottish Cup Final by defeating theRangers 3-2 (after being down 2-0).In addition, he was a member of theCeltic squad which achieved theimpressive performance of winningfive consecutive Scottish Leaguechampionships (between 1905-6 and1909-10 seasons), and four duringthe 1914-18 war. Note:This cup has been later inscribed inmemory of James Graham, 5th Earl and1st Marquis of Montrose (1612 - 1650).James Graham was an important and nowconsidered rather romantic figure inScottish 17th century history and after along and indeed successful involvement inthe Covenanting wars was hung in 1650.

From 1638 Montrose was an active enforcerof the Covenant and served in thecovenanter’s army in the bishops War. In1640 - 1641 he was imprisoned by the Dukeof Argyll. During Scotland’s intervention inthe English Civil war James Graham wascreated Marquis and made LieutenantGeneral by King Charles. His prowess andbrilliant military strategy were to prove ofgreat note and with only a small force (ofRoyalist and Irish troops) would win sixdecisive battles between 1644 - 1645. In1645 with the defeat of King Charles atNaseby, his support would dry out andwould flee for sanctuary on the continent.Returning to Scotland in 1650 in support ofKing Charles II and indeed trying to makehis rule a reality, an expedition that wouldlater be disavowed by Charles. Montroselater surrendered himself, in belief of hissafety, to Macleod of Assynt but was takenas prisoner to Edinburgh and on the 10th ofMay 1650 was sentenced to death byParliament and was hung on the 21st May1650.

Note:The survival of cast George IIScottish candle sticks is unusuallysmall, when compared to the muchlarger survival of English examples.One theory for this has always beenthat Scottish makers would haveretailed these types of wares ratherthan made them, so they wouldcarry the mark of their Englishmaker rather than Scottish retailer.With the rise of specialistcandlestick makers south of theborder it seems a credible

explanation. However the style,proportion and decoration of thesesticks is rather unusual anddefinitely points to a Scottish designand manufacture. The fluid spiralledshell details to the bases andproportions of the slender stems,while reminiscent of Englishexamples is rather quirky in itsdesigns, so there is little doubtthese were made in Scotland ratherthan just retailed. The placement ofthe marks to the underside of theplain foot rim in the domed angles isobviously trying to mirror that ofEnglish examples but the thinapplied foot rim allows little spaceand the marks are often off struck.While James Ker would be anobvious candidate for retailingEnglish wares (with his family andpolitical connections in London) heis by the same token a very likelycandidate to have made them beingperhaps Edinburgh’s premiergoldsmith of the era.

CONDITIONS OF SALE

Lyon & Turnbull carries on business withbidders, buyers and all those present inthe auction room prior to, or inconnection, with a sale on the followingGeneral Conditions and on such otherterms, conditions and notices as may bereferred to herein.

1. DEFINITIONS

In these Conditions:

(a) "Auctioneer" means the firm of Lyon &Turnbull or its authorised auctioneer, asappropriate;

(b) "deliberate forgery” means animitation made with the intention ofdeceiving as to authorship, origin, date,age, period, culture or source but which isunequivocally described in the catalogueas being the work of a particular creatorand which, at the date of the sale, had avalue materially less than it would havehad if it had been in accordance with thedescription;

(c) "hammer price" means the level ofbidding reached (at or above any reserve)when the auctioneer brings down thehammer;

(d) "terms of consignment" means thestipulated terms and rates of commissionon which Lyon & Turnbull acceptsinstructions from sellers or their agents;

(e) "total amount due" means thehammer price in respect of the lot soldtogether with any premium, Value AddedTax chargeable and any additional chargespayable by a defaulting buyer under theseConditions;

(f) "sale proceeds" means the net amountdue to the seller, being the hammer priceof the lot sold less commission at thestated rate, Value Added Tax chargeableand any other amounts due to us by theseller in whatever capacity and howeverarising;

(g) "You", "Your", etc. refer to the buyer asidentified in Condition 2.

(h) The singular includes the plural andvice versa as appropriate.

2. BIDDING PROCEDURES AND THEBUYER

(a) Bidders are required to register theirparticulars before bidding and to satisfyany security arrangements before enteringthe auction room to view or bid;

(b) the maker of the highest bid acceptedby the auctioneer conducting the saleshall be the buyer at the hammer priceand any dispute about a bid shall besettled at the auctioneer's absolutediscretion.

(c) Bidders shall be deemed to act asprincipals.

(d) Once made, no bid may be withdrawn.

(e) Our right to bid on behalf of the selleris expressly reserved up to the amount ofany reserve and the right to refuse any bidis also reserved.

3. INCREMENTS

Bidding increments shall be at theauctioneer’s sole discretion.

4. THE PURCHASE PRICE

The buyer shall pay the hammer pricetogether with a premium thereon.Antiques, Jewellery & Silver and Pictures(Not Fine Sales)17.5%.

All other sales (Fine/Special/Collections)25% up to £25,000 / 20% thereafter.VAT will be charged on the premium at therate imposed by law.

5. VALUE ADDED TAX

Value Added Tax on the hammer price isimposed by law on all items affixed withan asterisk or double asterisk. ValueAdded Tax is charged at the appropriaterate prevailing by law at the date of saleand is payable by buyers of relevant lots.

6. PAYMENT

(1) Immediately a lot is sold you will:

(a) pay to us the total amount due in cashor in such other way as is agreed by us.We accept cash, bank transfer (details onrequest), Switch or Debit Cards and Visaor MasterCard (please note there is asurcharge of 1.5% (VAT included) whenusing credit cards). We do not acceptAmerican Express.

(2) Any payments by you to us may beapplied by us towards any sums owingfrom you to us on any account whateverwithout regard to any directions of you oryour agent, whether express or implied.

7. TITLE AND COLLECTION OFPURCHASES

(1) The ownership of any lots purchasedshall not pass to you until you have madepayment in full to us of the total amountdue.

(2) You shall at your own risk and expensetake away any lots that you havepurchased and paid for not later than 3working days following the day of theauction or upon the clearance of anycheque used for payment after which youshall be responsible for any removal,storage and other associated charges.

(3) No purchase can be claimed orremoved until it has been paid for.

(4) It is the buyer’s responsibility toascertain collection procedures,particularly if the sale is not being held atour main saleroom.

8. REMEDIES FOR NON-PAYMENT ORFAILURE TO COLLECT PURCHASES

(1) If any lot is not paid for in full and takenaway in accordance with these Conditionsor if there is any other breach of theseConditions, we, as agent for the seller andon their behalf, shall at our absolutediscretion and without prejudice to anyother rights we may have, be entitled toexercise one or more of the followingrights and remedies:

(a) to proceed against you for damages forbreach of contract;

(b) to rescind the sale of that lot and/orany other lots sold by us to you;

(c) to resell the lot (by auction or privatetreaty) in which case you shall beresponsible for any resulting deficiency inthe total amount due (after crediting anypart payment and adding any resale costs).Any surplus so arising shall belong to theseller;

(d) to remove, store and insure the lot atyour expense and, in the case of storage,either at our premises or elsewhere;

(e) to charge interest at a rate notexceeding 1.5% per month on the totalamount due to the extent it remainsunpaid for more than 3 working days afterthe sale;

(f) to retain that or any other lot sold toyou until you pay the total amount due;

(g) to reject or ignore bids from you oryour agent at future auctions or to imposeconditions before any such bids shall beaccepted;

(h) to apply any proceeds of sale of otherlots due or in future becoming due to youtowards the settlement of the total amountdue and to exercise a lien (that is a right to

retain possession of) any of your propertyin our possession for any purpose until thedebt due is satisfied.

(2) We shall, as agent for the seller andon their behalf pursue these rights andremedies only as far as is reasonable tomake appropriate recovery in respect ofbreach of these Conditions

9. THIRD PARTY LIABILITY

All members of the public on ourpremises are there at their own risk andmust note the lay-out of theaccommodation and securityarrangements. Accordingly neither theauctioneer nor our employees or agentsshall incur liability for death or personalinjury (except as required by law by reasonof our negligence) or similarly for thesafety of the property of persons visitingprior to or at a sale.

10. COMMISSION BIDS

While prospective buyers are stronglyadvised to attend the auction and arealways responsible for any decision to bidfor a particular lot and shall be assumedto have carefully inspected and satisfiedthemselves as to its condition we shall ifso instructed clearly and in writing executebids on their behalf. Neither theauctioneer or our employees or agentsshall be responsible for any failure to doso save where such failure isunreasonable. Where two or morecommission bids at the same level arerecorded we reserve the right in ourabsolute discretion to prefer the first bidso made.

11. WARRANTY OF TITLE ANDAVAILABILITY

The seller warrants to the auctioneer andto you that the seller is the true owner ofthe property consigned or is properlyauthorised by the true owner to consign itfor sale and is able to transfer good andmarketable title to the property free fromany third party claims.

12. AGENCY

The auctioneer normally acts as agentonly and disclaims any responsibility fordefault by sellers or buyers.

13. TERMS OF SALE

The seller acknowledges that lots are soldsubject to the stipulations of theseConditions in their entirety and on theTerms of Consignment as notified to theconsignor at the time of the entry of thelot.

14. STANDARD VENDOR FEES ANDCHARGES (Subject to VAT)

(1) Commission: 15% of the first £3000 and10% thereafter is charged on the sellingprice of each lot (subject to a minimumcharge of £30). Loss and damagewarranty: 1.5% on value of lots sold.Photography: max £40 mono per lot, max£250 colour. Internet Service: £10 per lot.

(2) If a vendor wishes to withdraw acatalogued lot, a withdrawal fee will applyat the auctioneer’s discretion; this will becharged at 10% mid estimate.

15. DESCRIPTIONS AND CONDITION

(1) While we seek to describe lotsaccurately, it may be impractical for us tocarry out exhaustive due diligence on eachlot. Prospective buyers are given ampleopportunities to view and inspect beforeany sale and they (and any independentexperts on their behalf) must satisfythemselves as to the accuracy of anydescription applied to a lot. Prospectivebuyers also bid on the understanding that,inevitably, representations or statements

by us as to authorship, genuineness,origin, date, age, provenance, condition orestimated selling price involve matters ofopinion. We undertake that any suchopinion shall be honestly and reasonablyheld and accept liability for opinions givennegligently or fraudulently. Subject to theforegoing neither we the auctioneer or ouremployees or agents or the seller acceptliability for the correctness of suchopinions and all conditions andwarranties, whether relating todescription, condition or quality of lots,express, implied or statutory, are herebyexcluded. This Condition is subject to thenext following Condition concerningdeliberate forgeries and applies save asprovided for in paragraph 6 “information tobuyers”.

(2) Private treaty sales made under theseConditions are deemed to be sales byauction for purposes of consumerlegislation.

16. FORGERIES

Notwithstanding the preceding Condition,any Lot which proves to be a deliberateforgery (as defined) may be returned to usby you within 21 days of the auctionprovided it is in the same condition aswhen bought, and is accompanied byparticulars identifying it from the relevantcatalogue description and a writtenstatement of defects. If we are satisfiedfrom the evidence presented that the lot isa deliberate forgery we shall refund themoney paid by you for the lot including anybuyer's premium provided that (1) if thecatalogue description reflected theaccepted view of scholars and experts asat the date of sale or (2) you personally arenot able to transfer a good and marketabletitle to us, you shall have no rights underthis condition.

The right of return provided by thisCondition is additional to any right orremedy provided by law or by theseConditions of Sale.

GENERAL

17. We shall have the right at ourdiscretion, to refuse admission to ourpremises or attendance at our auctions byany person.

18 (1) Any right to compensation for lossesliabilities and expenses incurred in respectof and as a result of any breach of theseConditions and any exclusions provided bythem shall be available to the sellerand/or the auctioneer as appropriate.

(2). Such rights and exclusions shallextend to and be deemed to be for thebenefit of employees and agents of theseller and/or the auctioneer who maythemselves enforce them.

19. Any notice to any buyer, seller, bidderor viewer may be given by first class mailin which case it shall be deemed to havebeen received by the addressee 48 hoursafter posting.

20. Special terms may be used incatalogue descriptions of particularclasses of items in which case thedescriptions must be interpreted inaccordance with any glossary appearing atthe commencement of the catalogue.

21. Any indulgence extended to biddersbuyers or sellers by us notwithstandingthe strict terms of these Conditions or ofthe Terms of Consignment shall affect theposition at the relevant time only and inrespect of that particular concession only;in all other respects these Conditionsshall be construed as having full force andeffect.

22. Scottish law applies to theinterpretation of these Conditions.
