Chapter 4 DeslichFingerprints

Lesson Plan: use the fill in the blank lesson plan during our wrap up discussion of the unit as a closure to organize for our quiz and to study for our crime scene exam.

P50 define fingerprint and name 3 characteristics that make it useful for identification

P50 name 3 reasons evolutionary why organisms have friction ridges

P52 name 3 basic fingerprint patterns

http://policensw.com/info/fingerprints/finger07.htmluse when presentinghttp://www.chymist.com/Fingerprint%20patterns.pdf

P53 a loop fingerprint( url above)Describe the basic pattern

Describe delta and coreP53 based on delta and core, how can you tell a loop from a whorl? ( url above)

P53 how can you tell a loop from an arch? ( url above)

P54 explain the primary Henry-FBI classification number for fingerprints

P57 Henry-FBI classification number puts the suspect into a class. Let’s individualize:

Name 5 of 200 types of fingerprint minutia

Page 2: Fingerprints Lesson Plan

P 57 how many points of comparison must match to get a positive match between suspect and crime scene

P59 how do you visualize latent prints on nonabsorbent materials using powder?

P59 developing latent prints on porous materials:IodineNinhydrinSilver nitrateSuperglue fuming(on non porous surfaces)P62 name all human skin surfaces that have friction ridges

P63 what part of the skin forms the friction ridge component which determines the structure of the printshttp://ridgesandfurrows.homestead.com/friction_skin.html

P69 how does IAFIS work?

Lab/Activity Ideas: do each activity with fingers and toes!!!!!!!!!

Activity One Taking Exemplar Prints: inkpad, white balloon to enlarge, 10 print card with Henry-FBI classification number for all team members/class members fingerprint file with primary classification: keep fingerprint cards all semester for crime scenes

Activity Two: Developing Printshttp://school.cengage.com/forensicscience/chapter 6 intro activity dusting for printshttp://www.trutv.com/shows/forensic_files/games/fingerprint/index.htmldo this for matching prints

1. getting plastic prints: gum, paint, putty see p 64 text ( no actual lab, design one) starburst candy, softened………can I cast them?????2. getting visible prints: finger in wet material goes on hard surface: washable

paint3. getting latent prints: oil on glass, dust for print, iodine and starch, ninhydrin

and heat, superglue, silver nitrate(physical developer), fluorescence with high intensity halogen lights or LEDS:

use handout p141 Bertino

My students were not getting great results with the silver nitrate, so we rubbed a very small amount of liquid hand soap onto our fingers, then touched the paper and then dipped the paper into the solution. The UV light exposed a great print within seconds.

If you do the cyanoacrylate method (super glue fuming), then you may want to purchase some ardrox solution. It fluoresces the prints on the surface that have the prints. one might want to enhance the CA prints with a fluorescent dye like Ardrox, or RAM. There are many others, most of which can be made or purchased premade. Then use a UV light to visualize and photograph.

Also you may want to purchase Ninhydrin. This you want a hood for as well. Just add heat to an area soaked with ninhydrin and they will show up purple.

Sticky sided powder: develop print with crystal violet, dust with lycopodum mixed with detergent and water. Rinse with water, should be brightly colored adhere to skin cells. http://www.redwop.com/minutiae.asp?action=showArticle&ID=84
