The RBA is painting a positive outlook for Australia's economy, despite the
end of the mining investment boom nearing and the high dollar weighing
on growth.
RBA assistant governor of economics Dr Christopher Kent expects
economic growth to be a little below average in 2013 as the mining
investment boom peaks. But he says growth should improve in 2014 as
low interest rates help underperforming sectors of the economy like retail,
construction and housing start to pick up steam.
"Our expectation is that there will be a gradual recovery in non-mining
business investment and further moderate growth of dwelling investment,"
he told the Bloomberg Australian Economic Summit.
Dr Kent said the Australian dollar was likely to remain high even as mining
investment waned, which would weigh on growth over the next few years.
But he said the economy had weathered the high exchange rate well so
far and businesses were restructuring to cope with it.
"It is a very painful process for trade-exposed industries and there has
been quite a bit of evidence that those industries are responding to that
(the high dollar)," he said.
Dr Kent said the RBA had cut the cash rate significantly in the past 18
months, partly to offset the effects of the high dollar.
"The cash rate is lower than it otherwise would be if the exchange rate
wasn't where it was. The RBA cut the cash rate 1.75 percentage points
between November 2011 and last December, bringing it to its current
level of three per cent.
Dr Kent said the lower interest rates appeared to be having the desired
impact on the economy, with notable improvements in consumer
confidence and retail sales since the start of 2013.
Although mining investment is expected to fall after peaking some time in
2013, Dr Kent said it would still remain higher than normal.
"While the exact timing of the peak in mining investment and the profile
thereafter are uncertain, there is still a sizeable amount of work in the
pipeline, including a number of large LNG projects," he said.
"This means that the level of mining investment is likely to remain quite
elevated for a time.”

4 Tips to help with your Marketing Plans in 2013
Remaining the same is not an option!
1. What do I need to STOP doing that I'm already doing? No matter what your level of success is, there are things you're doing that YOU shouldn't be doing. You could stop them completely. You could delegate them away. You could outsource them. Etc. But, to get to the next level, there are some things you have to stop doing. 2. What do I need to START doing that I'm not currently doing? This list is usually a little easier than the last one (though the last one is more important). To get a new result, you know you need to do new things. So what are you going to start doing this year in order to function at a higher level? 3. What do I need to do LESS of that I'm currently doing? Though this sounds similar to question number one, it's not, In other words, there are some things that you're currently doing that you shouldn't stop (like responding to email) but that you should do less of (like not checking it 20 times a day).
So, what do you need to do less of this year if you want to become the kind of person who can deliver the kinds of results you want? 4. What do I need to do MORE of that I'm currently doing? Once you get past the administration, chances are there some very good things you're already doing that if you did them more often, would help you become a better leader of your business. For example, delegation. Most owners and entrepreneurs know the concept or idea of delegation-and occasionally do it, but if they want to get to the next level, they need to do more of it (and at a higher level). So, what do you need to do more of this year in order to become the kind of person who can drive significant growth? Once you have your answers to those four questions, you have a road map for this year. Then it's just about execution.
1.Some of these you'll have to do on your own (like stop checking email first thing in the morning)
2. Some of these you might need a
coach for (like developing a certain skill or ability)
3. Some of these you might need a
counselor for (hey, we all have baggage)
4. Some of these will be mental
changes you'll have to work on (like, stop playing small and start playing big)
5. Some of these you'll need to
read books on or take course on or do research about.
But one thing is absolutely clear. If you want to ensure this coming year is better than this last year, you have to become a different person than you were last year. Remaining the same is not an option! So, who do you need to become this year to drive the kinds of results you want?

Product Update
#7: Only One-Quarter of Social Networkers Use “Daily Deals” Sites Generally the American population is not crazy about daily deals services such asGroupon or LivingSocial, and only 23% of social networkers are registered users of these sites. Numerous sources suggest that there’s a lot of buyer’s remorse associated with Groupon. But now Amazon and Google have grabbed a piece of the daily deals business. It’ll be interesting to see how consumers respond to these brands over the next 12 months.
Daily deals are not drawing consumer attention as they did several years ago.
Key Takeaway: Unfortunately the entire Groupon business model has long been held in question. But from the consumer’s point of view, everyone still likes a good deal. If you’re using Groupon or Living Social, just be careful and make sure there is a profitable return for your business. Otherwise you may want to reevaluate your goals to check whether this kind of model is still a good fit for you.
#8: One-Third of Social Media Users Do Not Interact Most people like to engage (post status updates) on social media sites. However, 34% of users are silent for various reasons. According to TopRank Online Marketing Blog, some are lurkers (those who just sit tight and absorb information), while others are newbies who haven’t quite honed their online social skills. A good number of social media users are listeners, not talkers. Key Takeaway: Silent users such as lurkers and newbies may not interact with friends or brands, but they are listening and can be valuable connections for your business.
If you notice lurkers among your followers, try to reach out directly to them via direct messages. They’ll be more likely to respond if you rouse them with a thought-provoking question or comment. To draw out newbies, use the usual best practice of sharing tips, tricks and other helpful content. As they start to figure their way around, they’ll remember you for helping them along the way.
#9: People Are Checking in Less Frequently Both Gowalla and Foursquare saw sharp declines in user activity in 2012. In fact, 57% of users said they “almost never” check in. Of course, Gowalla shut down in early 2012, but even with Foursquare still open for business, consumers started to opt out of the check-in craze due to privacy concerns, according to a study published onMashable. Others did not consider badges or upgraded status to be sufficient motivation to check in.
The check-in craze is dying down due to privacy concerns. Key Takeaway: If you use location-based marketing to promote your business, try using a combination of specials and discounts to encourage more clients. Because people are concerned about privacy and safety issues, your business will have to offer unrivaled deals for customers to give up their location. For example, “Check in with three friends and get four free drinks,” or “Mayor gets 35% off entire bill.”
Final Wrap-up Marketers have a great opportunity to respond to these findings and develop strategies that appeal to changing consumer habits. Continue to focus on Facebook and Twitter as these platforms draw in new users. On the downside, be careful about using daily deals and location-based marketing because consumers are apprehensive about these services. Over to you: What do you think? As a marketer, which of these social habits did you find most interesting? Please tell us why you think so and share your thoughts below.
9 Consumer Social Media Trends That Could Impact Marketers
In this article, I examine a report published by Edison Research focused on people’s latest social habits. These findings provide useful insights about consumer behavior and how your business can respond. Here is the continuation (#7 to #9) of the 9 most interesting findings from the study.

Ricotta fritters with raisins and chocolate frittelle ricotta, uvetta e cioccolato
Ingredients
½ pound fresh ricotta cheese
2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
3 large eggs
7 tablespoons golden raisins, plumped and drained
7 tablespoons chocolate chips
2½ ounces candied orange peel, chopped
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest
Vegetable oil for frying
Sugar for dusting
Salt
Instructions
In a large bowl, thoroughly mix together ricotta and flour. Add eggs, raisins, chocolate chips, orange peel, baking powder, zest and pinch salt. Mix thoroughly to combine. In a high-sided skillet, pour in enough oil to come 1 inch up the sides of the pan. Attach a deep-fry thermometer and heat oil over medium-high heat to 365° to 370°. Add batter in batches, a tablespoonful at a time, pushing the batter off the spoon with the rounded corner of a spatula (do not crowd the pan). Batter should puff slightly into balls. If not, slightly reduce heat. Fry fritters, turning with a slotted spoon until golden on all sides, about 4 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels to drain; sprinkle generously with sugar and serve warm.
