Someeventsoccursorapidlythatonefindshim/herselftrappedinafirebeforetheyknowit.Thesearesomeinstructionsonwhattodoiftrappedbythefireoremergency.

Firesusuallystartsmallandnaturallypeopletendtotryfightingthefire,howeverconsiderevacuationwhen:

Do not panic, stay calm and continue to look for a way out Do not force through a severely hazardous area Continue to ask if there is anyone nearby Crawl instead of walking upright should the room/building be

smoke laden Use openings like windows if on a higher floor to signal for help

The fire continues to grow bigger despite your efforts

The fire is growing towards flammable liquids, pressurized containers including aerosols

There is risk of your exit way being blocked

There is rapid smoke accumulation or toxic gas release

If your clothes catch fire do not run, instead stop, drop and roll on the ground

ALL PERSONNEL

Roles and Responsibilities Allpersonsinthebuildingshallmakethemselvesfamiliarwiththeevacuationplansthataredisplayedthroughoutthebuilding.

Everyoneshallphysicallywalktheevacuationroute,includingthestairs,andmakesuretheyareawareoftheAssemblyPointlocation.

Thoseescapingshouldnotstoptocollectbelongingsoranyotheritems;suchascupsofcoffee,wallets,sunglasses,mobilephone,etc.

On discovering a fire or hearing the alarm:

1. Activatethefirealarmifitwasn’tyetactivated

2. Leavetheareaimmediatelyusingthenearestexit

3. Closedoorsbehindyouifyouarethelasttoleave

4. ProceedtotheAssemblyPoint

5. Donotre-enterthebuildinguntiltheChiefFireWardengivestheallclear

SECURITY PERSONNEL

Roles and Responsibilities Securitypersonnelinthebuildingshallmakethemselvesfamiliarwiththeevacuationplansthataredisplayedthroughoutthebuilding.

Everyoneshallphysicallywalktheevacuationroute,includingthestairs,andmakesuretheyareawareoftheAssemblyPointlocation.

6. Iftheyaretaskedininvestigatingthecauseofthealarm,theyshouldalwaysperformapre-entrycheckonanydoortheyopen

Checking door for heat1. Beforeopeningthedoor,youshouldcheckforheatusingthebackofyour

handsandnotyourpalms

2. Ifthedoorfeelshottotouch,donotopen.Therecouldbeafireontheotherside

3. ReportthisimmediatelytoHeadofSecuritysothatCivilDefensemaybecalled

FIRE WARDENS

Roles and Responsibilities FireWardensaregivenclearlydefined“areas”forwhichtheyareresponsibleintheeventofanemergencyevacuation.Theyareresponsibleforclearingandensuringthatallpersonnelwithintheirdesignatedareaareawareofthealarmandarerespondingintheappropriatemanner.

Theyshallmakethemselvescompletelyfamiliarwiththeareathattheyareresponsibleforandplanhowtosweeptheareaintheshortestpossibletime.

Shouldanevacuationberequired,FireWardensmustensurethatallpeoplepresentmovetothenearestsafeFireExitatanappropriatepace.

Finallyonexitingthepremises,theFireWardensshouldreporttotheChiefFireWardenthattheir“area”isclearofpersonnel.FireWardenshavebeenissuedwithveststomakethemeasilyidentifiableintheeventofanevacuation.

IfanyonefailedtoevacuateitshallbereportedtotheChiefFireWardenstatingthelocationandidentityoftheperson(s).

On discovering a fire or hearing the alarm:1. Activatethefirealarmifithasnotbeenactivated

2. Wearyourfirewardenvestandsafetyhelmet

3. Ensurethateveryoneisheadingtoemergencyexits

4. Sweeptheareasonooneisleftbehind

5. Clearwashrooms.Iftheyarefordifferentgenderotherthanyourselfknockonthedoorandshoutthisisanevacuationpleaseevacuateimmediately.Ifpossibleasksomeoneofthesamegendertogoinandcheckifanyoneisstillinside

TheprimarydutyofaFireWardenistoensureevacuationofthatpartofthebuildingtheyareresponsiblefor.FireWarden’s,

Mustnotputthemselvesatriskwhilecarryingouttheirduties Shouldcheckallareassuchasrooms,toiletsandstoreroomswithintheir

designatedarea Shouldencouragepeopletoleavethebuildingbythenearestavailableexit

inanorderlymanneranddirectpeopletotheappropriateassemblypoint Shouldnotusephysicalforceorbecomeinvolvedinconfrontation. Ifyouareawareofsomebodyremaininginthebuildingthenyouareto

Inanyevacuationprocedure,specialconsiderationmustbegiventothosepersonswho,byreasonofphysicalorotherlimitations,mightrequireassistanceinevacuatingduringanemergency.

TheHeadofSecurityistoinvestigatethefirepanelforthelocationofthealarmandpassthisinformationtotheChiefFireWarden.

On confirmation of fire:1. Activatethefirealarmifithasnotbeenactivated2. Call the Abu Dhabi Ports emergency number on 800112 or Civil Defense on 9993. Giveyourname,location,companytelephone,andthestateofemergency4. Say“FIREAT________”5. LiaisewiththeCivilDefense6. Preventallpersonnelfromenteringthebuilding7. TakefurtherinstructionfromCivilDefense

On hearing the alarmEnsurethatthebuildingisevacuatedasamatterofpriority.IfafterliaisonwiththeChiefFireWardennofireisreportedtaskatleasttwosecuritystafftoinvestigatethealarmactivation.OncethebuildinghasbeencheckedandthealarmresettheChiefFireWardencanbeadvisedtoletthepeoplere-enterthebuilding.Ifatanytimeduringtheinvestigation,fireorsmokeisdiscovered,CivilDefenseshallbecalledimmediately.

CHIEF FIRE WARDEN

Roles and Responsibilities

Ifanalarmand/orfireweretooccurCivilDefenseontheirarrivalwouldrequireadetailedreportfromaresponsiblepersonatthesite.TheChiefFireWardenwilltakeafullanddetailedreportfromtheFireWardensandHeadofSecurity,statingifthepropertyisclearofpersonnelorwhereandwhypersonnelhaveremainedinthepropertyandthelocationofthefireorthealarm.

TheChiefFireWardenshallensurethatsomeonefromhisdepartmenttakesoverhisroleduringhisabsence.
