After completing three Phase II trials with its lead product, EXC001, the results demonstrated statistically significant reductions in scar severity compared to the placebo. The drug was also well tolerated with no important drug related adverse effects observed. With no other FDA-approved products currently available to reduce scar severity, EXC001 was well positioned to be at the forefront of a multi-billion dollar market opportunity. When Excaliard entered into discussions with potential partners, Excaliard needed to act quickly to share the results of clinical trials, study reports, and regulatory and manufacturing documents required to support the diligence process. Affordable Secure Document Sharing for M&A with Large Document Sets According to Elizabeth Gordon, Ph.D. and Head of Regulatory Affairs and Project Management with Excaliard, “We had a very short timeframe to get the documents organized and available. We needed a solution that was designed to securely share a large number of documents outside of the firewall.” After review of a few Virtual Data Room providers, Excaliard found the solution security and features to be very comparable. Firmex was chosen because it had an unlimited subscription model and data room set-up was very simple. “We had a lot of pages in the data room and to go with a per-page pricing model increased the price significantly,” commented Dr. Gordon. Organization was the key to presenting a data room that enabled potential partners to easily locate the documents that they needed to review. “In a review like this, there are many different technical and corporate experts reviewing the data and documents,” described Dr. Gordon. “Documents needed to be organized in a way that made sense to the experts who were reviewing the asset.” The data room was a big success. On November 22, 2011, Pfizer and Excaliard announced that they had entered into a definitive agreement under which Pfizer was to acquire Excaliard and further develop the EXC001 product. Dr. Gordon attributes much of the data room success to the product’s flexibility and the exceptional service from the Firmex team. “Firmex made the experience easy for us.” She went on to say, “They treated us like we were their most important customer. When you are in the middle of the business development process, that commitment to our success is invaluable.” Sustain Value with Unlimited Use Subscription Since the announcement, Excaliard continues to derive value from the data room. As the transition to Pfizer continues and new team members are brought on board, they access the documents in the data room to become knowledgeable with the EXC001 development program. “Working with the Firmex product and team has been a very positive experience,” noted Dr. Gordon.
