  • Feature Operation

    2 Feature Operation

This section describes the Firmware Download of Antenna Line Devices featurein more detail, including network configuration requirements and operationflows.

Firmware Download of Antenna Line Devices is a licensed feature that enablesthe operator to remotely upgrade the firmware of the 3GPP Iuant (AISG v2)compliant antenna near unit from OSS-RC, instead of having to visit the site.

The Antenna Line Device (ALD) supplier is responsible for the creation of azipped XML file that contains the firmware to be downloaded to the antennanear unit. Ericsson distributes the template (on which the XML encapsulation isbased) to the selected ALD suppliers, to ensure the robustness of the solution.XML encapsulation is selected by the AISG standardization forum for vendorspecific content distribution. It enables validation without format conversion. The end user benefits by the simplification of the inter-work between differentvendors of controllers and ALDs.

The XML used for distribution of vendor specific content includes compatibilityinformation that allows the RBS to validate the file and decide whether a givensoftware can be downloaded to the installed unit.

The XML files are zipped and then stored by the operator in either a remoteFTP server (preferably in the Configurations folder of the SMRS server, whereother site configuration files, for example, SiteEquipment.xml are stored) atOSS-RC or on a local server (PC on site).

The operator initiates the firmware download on the antenna near unit byusing the downloadSoftware action in the AntennaNearUnit MO. The operatorprovides information about path, server, user name and password for the serverwhere the XML file is stored.

The RBS fetches the XML file from the remote server using ftp, unzips the file, validates it by checking the compatibility between the XML file and the antennanear unit, extracts and stores the firmware in the C disk directory defined forsuch purpose and upgrades the antenna near unit with the new firmware. Afterthe firmware has been upgraded, the antenna near unit restarts to ensure theunit runs the on the latest firmware.

    2.1 Network Configuration Requirements

The following network configuration prerequisites apply for this feature:

The feature license FW Upgrade on AISGv2.0-compliant antenna nearunits is activated and enabled.

  • Firmware Download of Antenna Line Devices

The XML file is available on a remote FTP server (the Configurationsfolder in the SMRS server in OSS-RC is recommended) or on a localserver (PC on site).

The Iuant compliant antenna near unit is functional and has been correctlyinstalled within the antenna system in accordance with the requirementsof the 3GPP/Iuant specifications.

    2.2 Incorrect Operation

If the operator initiates the firmware download without having the feature licenseFW Upgrade on AISGv2.0-compliant antenna near units, the RBS notifies theoperator with the exception noLicense on the downloadSoftware action andthe antenna near unit remains as before.

If the RBS detects that the firmware indicated by the operator is not suitablefor the actual unit installed in the system, the RBS notifies the operator withthe exception invalidFile on the downloadSoftware action and the antennanear unit remains as before.

If the RBS detects that the file fetched from the remote server is corrupt asthe Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) of the zip-file fails, the RBS notifies theoperator with the exception downloadFailure with the MO-type and theerror message Zip file damaged in download on the downloadSoftwareaction and the antenna near unit remains as before.

If the RBS attempts to fetch the firmware file from the remote SMRS serverand a failure occurs while fetching the file, the RBS notifies the operator withthe exception downloadFailure on the downloadSoftware action and theantenna near unit remains as before.
