Known for work that incorporates the traditional
culture and customs of Bangladesh, in the triennale,
Firoz Mahmud presents a three-dimensional piece
that makes use of a fighter-plane motif. Though the
word “war” is only a single syllable, the background
and meaning surrounding such occurrences are highly
complex. For example, Bangladesh’s military conflict
with Pakistan was closely tied to its pride in becoming
an independent nation, while in Japan, there are still
many painful memories related to World War II. The
Super Hornet strike fighter that inspired this work
is an aircraft which has often been used in actual
warfare in the Iraq War and elsewhere in recent years.
What all wars share is the macroscopic perspective
of the nations or governments involved. The body
of Mahmud’s plane, covered with a massive number
of beans, indicates each individual’s part in creating
the structure. The harvested beans also symbolize
labor (a total of 100 volunteers assisted Mahmud in
attaching them to the plane) and people’s daily lives.
While shifting back and forth between a micro and
macroscopic focus, the work is an indictment of war
and militarism, which needlessly waste tax money, and
at the same time, suggests that judging and dealing
with reality is a necessary part of problem-solving.
