I. Background
“Training Demonstration for First Aid” is a proactive seminar
conducted by the Mechanical Engineering Society as part of the five-day
celebration of Mechanical Engineering Week. It is made possible in
cooperation with the Red Cross Batangas Chapter headed by their Safety
Service Instructor/ Emergency Response Unit Team Leader Mr. Marlon
Bausan, RN. Moreover, Mr. Mark Eugene R. Dalisay, RN, and Ms.
Marithess Vianca Magsino, RN, members of the emergency response
units are the two presiding speakers. It is held at the Amphitheater, 4 th
Floor Ceafa Building, Batangas State University Main Campus II,
Alangilan, Batangas City. The said event commenced at 8:00 in the
morning and ended at 12 in the afternoon.
Philippine Red Cross has truly become the premier humanitarian
organization in the country, committed to provide quality life-saving
services that protect the life and dignity especially of indigent Filipinos in
vulnerable situations.
The story of the Philippine Red Cross is the story of men and
women from all walks of life who have dedicated themselves to the service
of humanity. It is the tale of hundreds of thousands of ordinary people who
devoted their time and resources to help the poorest of the poor.
Professionally trained and truly compassionate, these men and women
are ready to lend a helping hand to those in need – whoever, whenever
and wherever they may be.
In all its 67 years of reputable existence, the Philippine Red Cross
has lived through many changes that were intended to help more people.
Where it used to be involved only in providing blood and in disaster-
related activities, the Philippine Red Cross now focuses on a holistic
approach to uplift the condition of the most vulnerable. Where it used to
offer short-term palliatives, it now offers a wider array of humanitarian
3
services ranging from preventive medicine to therapeutic counseling, to
youth leadership.
At present, the Philippine Red Cross provides six major services:
Blood Services, Disaster Management Services, Safety Services, Health
Services, Social Services, Red Cross Youth and Volunteer Services. All of
them embody the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross
and Red Crescent Movement – humanity, impartiality, neutrality,
independence, voluntary service, unity and universality. These values
guide and inspire all Red Cross staff and volunteers, to whom being a Red
Crosser is more than just a philosophy but a way of life.
II. Objectives
“Training Demonstration for First Aid” aims to impart knowledge
and gives a real-world display of first aid practice to be applied on
emergency scenarios and predicaments. Moreover it has the following
objectives:
to inculcate the relevance of first aid application to safety and
health procedures;
to elevate knowledge on performing basic first aid principles;
to offer specific information on the provisions of first aid for various
incidents;
to extend awareness on emergency action guidelines; and
to gain technical know-hows on proper patient or casualty handling.
III. Program and Highlights
First aid is indeed not just an extra part but an inevitable fragment
of safety and health. As the Mechanical Engineering Society gives
importance to this point, “Training on Demonstration for First Aid” is
4
conducted. The event covers first aid topics ranging from a general
definition to a more specific emergency plan application.
First aid has been defined as the immediate care given to a person.
It is also an assessment and intervention that can be performed by a
concerned citizen. It is also noted that it does not imply medical treatment
and can never be a substitute for such.
Emergency principles have been discussed and include the
following procedures: surveying the scene, doing a primary survey and
conducting a secondary survey. Several questions must be answered in
surveying a scene such as “Is the scene safe?”, “What really happened?”,
and “Are there bystanders who can help?” Moreover, a primary survey
may mean the evaluation of a patient’s consciousness, airway, breathing
and circulation. In the secondary survey, checking the vital signs, doing a
head to toe exam and interviewing the victim is inevitable.
Several key points are further discussed such as the Golden Rules
in Giving Emergency Care/ Do’s and Don’ts, Emergency Rescue,
Hindrances of Giving a First Aid, Indications of Emergency Rescue and
Classification of Wounds.
The second part of the event covered the demonstration of Patient/
Casualty Handling and Bandaging Techniques. Different methods for
casualty handling is discussed. These methods include fireman’s carry,
supporting carry, arms carry, saddle carry, pack-strap carry, two man
supporting carry, two-man arms carry, two-man fore-and-aft carry, four
hand seat carry and two-hand seat carry. These movement efforts should
be organized and performed methodically. Each movement made in lifting
or moving a casualty should be performed as deliberately and as gently as
possible. Taking the tactical situation into consideration, casualties should
not be moved before the type and extent of their injuries are evaluated
and the required first aid or tactical combat casualty care is administered.
Moreover, bandaging techniques have three major key uses. First,
is in applying pressure on bleeding wounds. Second is for covering
5
wounds and burns and lastly for providing support and immobilization for
broken bones, sprains and strains. Several bandaging techniques are
discussed such as chest bandage, hand bandage, arm sling and cravat
bandage.
IV. Competencies Gained
First aid is indeed an inseparable portion of safety and health
practice. There is more to first aid than just cleaning a cut and putting a
band aid on. Learning the basics may mean learning to save someone’s
life or even to save yours.
"Without proper action at proper time, danger awaits us with a
bigger face."
We must act on time when a person is injured. We must take care
of person the way it is meant, otherwise, a valuable life might be lost .We
need to understand how precious lives of people are and what importance
first-aid carries in saving these lives.
And as concerned citizens of this community we must take pride in
urging all Filipinos to take part in the heroism of learning and practicing
every bit of first aid principles as part of a safer world.

Training Demonstration
for First Aid is made
possible with the
cooperation of
Mechanical Engineering
Society and Red Cross
Batangas Chapter.
Before the seminar
officially started, several
students were chosen to
show their talents.
7
Mr. Bausan while
discussing the basic
principles of giving initial
care
“First aid does not imply
medical treatment and
in by no means a
replacement for it”
Gentle, resourceful,
observant, tactful,
empathic and
respectful: the
characteristics of a first
aider one must possess.
8
Another major topic
tackled in the said
event: Guidelines in
Giving Emergency
Care.
Not only students
participated in the
activity but the members
of the faculty as well.
The rest of the
Mechanical Engineering
Society as sessions are
ongoing. “To prolong life
is the main objective of
first aid application.”
9
Another part of the
seminar is the
demonstration of proper
patient/casualty
handling.
Mr. Dalisay discussed
the general procedures
for patient/casualty
handling.
Selected students
participated in the actual
demonstration of
patient/casualty
handling methods.
10
Student’s showing
several lifting
procedures in an
evacuation scenario.
“Supporting Carry”, one
of the basic lifts that can
be applied ding
emergency.
“Arm’s Carry”, another
type of patient handling
method performed.
11
The arms carry is useful
in carrying casualty for a
short distance (up to 50
meters) and for placing
a casualty on a litter.
In manual evacuation,
individuals performing
the evacuation are
referred to as bearers.
“Two-Hand Seat Carry”
is another method
demonstrated.
12
In the two-hand seat
carry, each bearer
passes his arms under
the casualty’s thighs
and back and grasps
the other bearer’s
wrists.
Ms. Magsino as she
discussed about safe
bandaging and dressing
techniques.
13
Bandages are any clean
cloth materials sterile or
not use to hold the
dressing in place.
“Arm Sling” is one of the
bandaging techniques
that are demonstrated.
14
“Cravat for the Forearm”
is another bandaging
method performed.
Certificate of
Appreciation has been
given to the cooperating
team of Red Cross
Batangas Chapter.
