FROM THE PASTOR
As we end 2015 there is much to be thankful for in the past year. Our church is blessed with wonderful
people who love the Lord. Through various challenges we have seen the hand of the Lord at work. God
has enabled us to begin several new ministries. We have strengthened our ministry of congregational
care as we reach out to support one another during the difficult times of life. We have expanded our out-
reach to families, parent and couples. Each week we gather as the Body of Christ to worship our Risen
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We have continued to share the gospel with others through various avenues
of outreach. We have offered opportunities for some 50 people to participate in Covenant Bible Study.
Each week faithful teachers disciple participants in our Sunday School classes. We offer numerous oppor-
tunities for involvement in missions at home, in North Carolina, in the US and overseas. We have empha-
sized children and UM youth ministries, started a Sunday night children’s study and continue to offer the
exciting through-the-week ministries of Pre-School, After School, and Summer Camp.
As we look to the new year of 2016, I am optimistic about the ways in which God will lead us to continue
and to strengthen these existing ministries and expand into new areas of ministry and outreach. We are
grateful to those who have turned in their 2016 Every Member in Ministry Commitment Cards. In January
we hope to have all of them processed and to get everyone actively involved. We want to stay true to our
mission “to believe in Jesus Christ as Lord, to receive the power of the Holy Spirit and to respond to the
needs of others with the love of God the Father.” And to stay true to our calling to love God, love others
and make disciples of Jesus Christ. May we seek to fulfill the vision of being a growing community of disci-
ples of Jesus Christ who are transforming our community and the world.
Gratefully,
Pastor Glenn

Barb's Blessings…..
An appropriate heading because of the many blessings we, as the church, and I, as the Music Director have received during the Christmas Season! We have been so blessed for many years, long before I came, with marvelous music. Our Chancel Choir is beholding to none in the area, and our organist blesses us every time he sits on the organ bench or at the piano.
We are blessed with a strong core group of hand bell ringers that have been together for well over twenty years, and some new younger ringers have taken the opportunity to use their special talents for the glory of God. For all of these, we give thanks!
We are blessed with a special energetic group of young singers in children's choir who match pitch very well and even show a bit of a flare for drama. They also ring chimes in training for their future adventure into hand bells (we hope). Many blessings have come to us through our new puppet team leaders, Sherri Hendrix and Jayne Walker.
Our Praise Band leads us in music for the Early Light Service and they are another special blessing. They get to church very early on Sunday mornings to prepare for their music leadership.
Our church is also very blessed to have a well respected educational facility in our preschool which is over 30 years old. We have excellent teachers who work very well with the children and each other. I invite any of you to stop by on any given day to see for yourself what we can be extremely proud of. The preschool is an excellent outreach into the community. We show God's love by loving, nurturing, and educating our future generations.
Again, I am very blessed to have had the opportunity for the past 28 years to serve you in ministry and look forward to our future ministry together.
God bless,
Barbara Basham, Director of Music and Preschool

LOSING PUTTER and COMING HOME Around noon the Friday after Thanksgiving, with our amazing 70 degree weather, I was out front cleaning up the gardens for winter. Doogal, our 2 ½ year old rescue and Putter, our 1 year old whom we recently rescued, were each leashed to heavy, 20 pound "Troutman" rocking chairs on the front porch. John was standing by the garage getting his golf clubs ready for a gorgeous day on the links. His friend, David, was picking him up momentarily to play 18 holes. When David pulled his car in the driveway, Putter, oblivious to her heavy anchor, ran to meet him. As she flew off the porch to greet David, the 20 lb rocking chair followed her. As she ran with the rocker in tow, she became increasingly frightened. The evil black rocker followed her across the yard, down the driveway and up the gully, at least 30 yards, with her terror increasing with every step she ran. Then her collar with her ID tags broke, and she ran as fast as a greyhound with its tail on fire up the street and disappeared over the hill. By the time we scrambled into cars to chase her, only two people had seen her streak by about a mile away ..... but she was gone. GONE. People were out decorating their houses for Christmas and no one, NO ONE saw her after that. John and I drove in 2 separate cars, ever widening our circle for 6 hours. Our 60 pound, bright white canine had disappeared, and she is hard to miss, especially with the leaves off the trees and the crops harvested. We made up 15 fliers and taped them on poles and stop signs along the roadways. We listed her as a Lost Dog on 6 sites on the internet. We called the police and animal control. Neighbors and friends joined our search canvasing meadows and neighborhoods. I was devastated, consumed with fears and fighting horrific visions of road carnage. My heart was breaking. Finally, I prayed, pleading with God that while I almost never asked for anything for myself…. please, please return our puppy. John kept looking. But after 6 hours, I wanted to stay by the phone. At 7 pm, after dark, I took one more spin around the neighborhood, calling her name. Nothing. The temperatures would be in the high 30’s that night and I knew Putter had few foraging skills other than instinct. Doogal moped all day. He had witnessed what happened to his sister; he saw her terrified and running for her life. And I am sure in his Doggie Heart, Doogal felt helpless. Every 15 minutes, I walked out back and stood on the patio calling her name thinking, hoping she was lost in the woods somewhere nearby and that my voice might be a beacon for her. (Our back is dark and wooded as is the area surrounding us). I am sure the neighbors thought I was some sick and broken church bell calling "Putter, Putter" every quarter hour with my ragged, and by now, hoarse voice. We left the back gate open on the deck .... just in case. We put her bedding on the front porch and a blanket on the back deck .... just in case. John put a bowl of water out for her…. just in case. At 8:30 I was in bed attempting to read, but too distraught to concentrate. I “thought” I heard a soft bark just outside the house. Was it my imagination? Then Doogal's ears popped up and he jumped off the bed. I look out our bedroom door which is on the deck. Nothing. John was watching TV and he assumed it was Doogal who had barked. Then John head-ed for a look out the front door and I turned to check the screened-in porch and there, through the window, was one of the most beautiful visions I've ever seen .... our Putter's face. We cried and hugged her and she wee'd a huge puddle on the floor in her excitement and licked Doogal and danced around. She was thirsty and hungry and very tired. Burrs were throughout her fur and her paws were red and two pads, front and back, had the outer layer of skin worn off (probably from dragging the rocking chair down the driveway). She was stiff and sore and tired. But she was home! And while Doogal never doubted our love for him, he was just as thrilled to see his wayward sister as we were. The relief for all of us was inexpressible. I thanked God with all of my heart. Although a joyous, albeit worrisome way to start the holidays, it truly was a Thanksgiving blessing. Losing Putter reminds me of the parable of the Lost Sheep or the Prodigal Son (or at the Paterson’s household, The Prodigal Pooch). God loves us each so much. He dearly loves the ones who never stray, but I can only imagine how joyous he is when one of us who has wandered or run from the fold finds the way back home. He never stops looking for us, hoping we will return to him. He calls our name even in our isolated and sometimes terrifying darkness…. if we would only listen and tune into the soft, gen-tle voice. If, we, two simple human beings can feel so much happiness and relief, when our beloved pup returns home, it is beyond imagination what God must feel when we return to him. So this is our Advent story of hope and love and joy. KRISTEN PATERSON

Pastor David Kelly is the Honduran director for Caroli-
na Honduras Health Foundation. In addition to his
roles as church pastor and board member of the Cru-
zadas Mission in La Ceiba, Honduras, David works for
and with all the CHHF teams that go to Honduras. He
assists in planning for each of the teams. From the
time that he meets us at the San Pedro Sula airport,
he works with team leaders to assure safe travel
throughout the trips. He works with local Hondurans
to schedule and plan the medical clinics at multiple
sites. He assists the doctors and dentists whenever
needed, as well as acts as an interpreter in whatever
setting is needed. Over the years, David has become a
most loved and trusted friend and adviser.
David will be coming to Mocksville on January 14 and
leaving on the evening of January 17. We are planning at least one evening event while he is here.
We are looking forward to his message to us on Sunday morning, January 17 at both services.
