Namaste (continued)

lift their knees and tighten their thighs. Then I tell them to relax their legs. I ask them if they noticed that their body sinks when they relax their legs. We do it again. Just about everybody feels it. It’s palpable, real. Then I tell them that that’s what yoga is: connection. Our legs are connected to our body not just anatomically, but dynamically. What happens in our legs affects our body. What happens in one place affects everything else. They can feel it. It isn’t just a bunch of woo woo.

That’s it. A seed. I go to the next pose.

At the end of the class, I introduce Namaste, with which these days nearly everybody is already familiar. I remark that in common usage it’s a little like “Aloha”. It can mean hello, goodbye, have a great day, etc. For yogis, I add, it means much more. The Cosmos is like a giant jig saw puzzle with myriad pieces, I say, all different sizes, shapes, colors; despite all these differences, the pieces fit together perfectly to make one vast amazing picture. Each of us is an integral and essential piece of this grand puzzle. And I tell them that when I say “Namaste” to them in class, I am saying “I honor the truth that you and I are the same, - connected parts of the One Divine Infinite Jigsaw Puzzle of the Universe.” Then I join my palms, bow my head, and say, “Namaste.” Then I say, “And remember, doing one pose is a practice.” End of class.

We are all connected. And forgetting or not knowing the truth of that is at the core of what is afflicting our society, our country, our world today.

When I read the paper or watch TV, I am struck by how much everything is about us vs. them. Sometimes it seems that division and anger is all there is. Rich vs. poor, white vs. colored, Democrat vs. Republican, Trumpster vs. Never-Trumpers, pro-choice vs. anti-abortion, pro-gun vs. gun reform, climate change activists vs. climate change deniers, urban vs. rural, Boomers vs. Millenials, and on and on. So much of this is born out of fear, essentially fear of losing what you’ve got. Fear that what you’ve got isn’t really as good as what they have . This happens even in the yoga world. One approach denigrates another approach as being inauthentic or superficial. My tradition is real yoga, meaning yours isn’t.

I don’t want to get caught in the trap of us vs. them. Sure, I have opinions; I have sides in some of these divides. We should have opinions. We live in a democracy (a democratic republic to be precise), and as Thomas Jefferson said, “A properly functioning democracy depends on an informed electorate.” (Informed is a loaded word these days. A topic for another time.) So, we should have informed opinions and discuss them amongst ourselves in an effort to reach the best approach to whatever issue we are confronting. It is important to make informed judgements about ideas and policies. In yoga, the ability to discern and discriminate is one of the most important aspects of the practice and calls upon our most highly developed state of mind.

The problem isn’t having differences and making judgements. The problem is in how we deal with our differences. We’ve always had disagreements about all the issues I mentioned in the partial list of divides. What is different now is that the people on the other side are bad people! We, of course, are right, and therefore, good people!

Making judgements about ideas and actions is one thing. Making judgements about people is another. In the Book of Matthew, Jesus says,

“Judge not, that ye be not judged.” Why? Because when we judge another person, we separate ourselves from them. They become “other”. And not only are they separated from us, but we are separated from them. In the end, we become

“other” not only to them, but to ourselves. I don’t think Jesus only means that if we judge other people, they will judge us. I think what he means is that when we judge others, on some level we judge ourselves as well.

Why are we so polarized? Not because we disagree, but because we are disconnected from the people on the “other side”. And why are we disconnected? Because demagogues succeed by dividing us and creating “enemies”. That’s why Machiavelli counselled, “Divide and rule.” Because powerful forces - the media, religions, for example - profit by keeping us angry and divided. We are being manipulated constantly. Our leaders don’t just disagree with other people. They insult, degrade, and demonize them.

John Schumacher is the founder and director of Unity Woods. He has prac-ticed yoga for over 50 years and has taught in the Washing-

ton area since 1973. John studied in India with B.K.S. Iyengar for 33 years and is an Advanced Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT). He also spent many years studying with internationally acclaimed teacher Dona Holleman.

John’s clear, precise style and his engaging sense of humor have made him one of the country’s leading yoga teachers. In 2015, Yoga Journal gave John their Lifetime Contributors Award as 1 of 12 teachers who have helped authenticate yoga in America.

" He has written for a variety of publications and has appeared in numerous local and national media, including U.S. News and World Report, Yoga Journal, Washingtonian Magazine, the Washington Times, the Washing-ton Post, PBS and others. John speaks about the practice and benefits of yoga on radio and television and at conferences and organizations around the country.

Over the years John has taught thousands of students and trained hundreds of teachers. He contin-ues to travel across the U.S. and throughout the world, includ-ing Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, the Middle East and the

Namaste (continued)

What can we do?

Inform ourselves for starters. Step outside our

boundaries. Get the facts. Work at it. Svadhyaya,

study, the yogis call it. It’s worth it. “The truth

shall make you free,” Jesus tells us. Free from the

power of manipulation. Free from the delusion

born of deception. Free from the loneliness that

comes from feeling disconnected.

Yoga helps us reconnect. Just as I do in my

beginners' class, yoga shows us that our bodies

are a web of connections and that our breath

connects our bodies and minds. We can observe

the truth of that. We can feel it. There is no

denying it. As we become more mindful, more

attentive through our practice of asana and

pranayama, we become more sensitive, more

tuned in. We notice that what we eat affects our

practice. We feel it. We’ve known all along that

our actions have consequences, but now we

can begin to feel the connection between our

actions and the quality of our life more clearly,

more subtly. It isn’t just an idea. It’s tangible. And

because of that, we can begin to realize that we

have the power to affect the quality of our life in

very meaningful ways. We can change how we

eat and change how we feel. Our practice makes

that connection clear. And we can see more

clearly that just as our actions affect how we feel,

they affect those around us, and that just as our

actions affect others, their actions affect us. By

being conscious of the quality of our actions,

we have the power to affect the quality of those

connections, to make them more harmonious

and healthier. The more clearly we see the

vastness of this web of connections, the more

clearly we will realize that we are, in fact, truly

connected to everyone, everything, connected

to the Infinite Jig Saw Puzzle of the Universe, to

the One. We can feel it.

That’s how to make real change.

Skillful Sequencing

Sequencing, the flow of one event into another, is an inherent part of our lives. It is also a key element in the practice and teaching of yoga. In this workshop, we'll examine some basic principles of sequencing and learn guidelines for putting a pose, a class, a session, a year together in ways that help you and your students make progress.

Morning sessions will focus on practicing and teaching the art and science of sequencing. We will practice teach in the afternoon sessions to help you refine your skills as a teacher. Optional early morning practices are open to all.

Seeking an Iyengar teacher in the DMV, she came to John's classes in 1981 and began teaching at UW in 1986. Her love of yoga and enthusiasm for teaching have inspired and guided her students over all these years. We are grateful for her warm presence and friendship and wish her all the best.

Although Giulia and ann are no longer teaching at UW, they will always be cherished members of the UW "family."

I understand that yoga includes physical movements as well as an opportunity for relaxation, stress re-education and relief of muscular tension. As is the case with any physical activity, the risk of injury, even serious or disabling, is always present and cannot be entirely eliminated. If I experience any pain or discomfort, I will listen to my body, adjust the posture and ask for support from the teacher. I will continue to breathe smoothly. Yoga is not a substitute for medical attention, examination, diagnosis or treatment. Certain yoga practices are not recommended and are not safe under certain medical conditions. I affirm that I alone am responsible for deciding whether to practice yoga. I hereby agree to irrevocably release and waive any claims that I have now or hereafter may have against Unity Woods Yoga Center.
