FIRST EDITIONFIRST EDITIONJackson FUMC Welcomes the 2016 Confirmation Class!

Sunday, April 3rd, was a great day of celebration in the life of our church! Fifteen confirmands participated in the worship service; were confirmed as members of Christ’s holy Church; and were received into the membership of First United Methodist Church (FUMC) of Jackson, TN.

In his message to the Confirmands, Pastor Dan shared three observations about them which are reminders to each of us as Christians:1) Be joyful in worship. 2) Encourage and be supportive of one another

now and in the years ahead (write notes, text or call, stay in touch).

3) Be in service to others.

For the past several months, these sixth graders have been in covenant with one another to learn about what it means to take vows of church membership; their commitment to the church; and more importantly, their commitment to God. They have assisted the clergy in worship as they learned how to serve as acolytes, bringing in the light symbolizing Christ’s presence, at the 11 a.m. traditional service, They have read scripture during both worship services. Each week on Wednesday evenings and Sundays,

they met together to learn and grow in their faith. They also experienced outdoor weekend retreats during the fall and winter at Deer Run and Lakeshore. None of this would have been possible without their dedicated leaders, Kelly Nye and Tracy Adams; Pastors Dan Camp and Jeff Rudy; their scripture reading coaches, Sandra McKnight and the late Betty Morris, Sunday School teacher, Michelle Reddick and the support and commitment of the parents and mentors. Thanks to all for guiding them to become followers of Jesus Christ!

As these young people light their world, may the Light of Christ and the Word of God lead each of us into the world to serve and reflect God’s glory!

Music Notes

A huge “thank you” to all who rehearsed and worked so diligently to make our Holy Week and Easter music beautiful. The singing of The Hallelujah Chorus to end our Easter Sunday morning worship was the “icing on the cake.” It was a thrilling moment to have members of the congregation join us for the singing of that great chorus by Handel.

The newly formed Men’s Choir met for their first rehearsal and are preparing to sing at our Andrews Chapel campus on Sunday afternoon, April 10, at 5:30 p.m. More than twenty men showed up for the first rehearsal and more are expected to join us for this event. The program will consist of old gospel songs and hymns, such as “I’ll Fly Away”, “In the Garden,” “O How I Love Jesus,” and many many more of your favorites. An old fashioned potluck dinner will follow the service. Come, bring family and friends to hear and to worship together! For more information, contact Gene Smith or John Yarbrough.

Jubilate began as a singing group over twenty years ago and have just recently come back together in preparation for a concert at our Andrews Chapel Campus. It has been a joy for the singers, and for the director, to resurrect this group of dedicated singers. The original mission of this ensemble was to be in music ministry, not only to FUMC, but to the community at large. That continues to be our mission as we welcome new singers Patrick Teer, Ron Harris, and Lisa Hay to

the original group. Make your plans now to attend this service of music on Sunday afternoon, April 24, at 5:30 p.m.

Note Dale Dodd’s call for additional musicians for First Awakening band. Contact him if you have an interest in joining this group of dedicated singers and instrumentalists.

Make note of the musical happenings that are taking place with our children under the direction of Rachel Raper: Spring Musical performance “Table for Five…Thousand! and Summer Music Camp (mini-fest) “A Technicolor Promise.”

Watch for more news about our childrens’ music ministry!!

The invitation to get involved in the music ministry remains open to all!! Join us!!

Youth Ministry Updateby Jeff Rudy, Associate Pastor

Over the last few months, our church has been in prayerful dialogue about the current state and future hopes of our youth ministry, especially as we became aware that Taylor (Parimore) Wright, our current Director of Student Ministries, would be transitioning out of Jackson as her wonderfully talented new husband, Preston Wright, has been matched with a medical residency program in Kansas. While we are sad to see them go, we are excited for this next chapter in their shared lives of ministry.

In January of this year, the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) commissioned a vision team to assess the current status of our youth program, the immediate and long-term challenges and needs of our student ministries, discern the staffing needs to oversee this vital ministry area, and make a recommendation regarding potential avenues of pursuit in terms of filling the position that will be vacant in May. Becky Sadowski, the chair of the Youth Ministry Team, led the vision team which was made up of several youth members, parents of youth and children, and other volunteers who have a background or experience in ministering with young people.

After much prayer and conversation, the vision team agreed upon a proposal to submit to the SPRC with the motion for Jackson FUMC to contract with the Center for Youth Ministry Training (CYMT), a graduate degree program based in Brentwood,

Tennessee and directed by Rev. Dietrich Kirk. CYMT offers a program in which its graduate students are matched with churches in search of youth ministers/directors. To learn more about the program, see http://cymt.org/. The SPRC approved the recommendation of the vision team and agreed that the information gleaned from the vision process regarding the current state and future hopes of our youth program be forwarded to the board at CYMT so that they may have a more intimate awareness of Jackson FUMC youth and prayerfully match the right candidate with our church. Please be in prayer for this process: Dietrich and those at CYMT as they discern appropriate places for the candidates in the program at CYMT; for the candidate that will be matched to Jackson FUMC; for the youth at our church as they welcome our new leader; and for parents and staff who will work closely with the person. We eagerly await word from CYMT about our matched candidate and look forward to sharing more in the future as it becomes known.

Equipping the Laity for Ministry“..By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13: 35This is part one of a two-part offering. Through study of the ministries of care and compassion, we will be exploring ways in which the spiritual gifts of laity can be utilized to care for one another (within the church) and extend Christ’s love to a wider world. Through readings and case studies, we will seek to discern what it means to live out our baptismal vows. Participants who complete this training will be encouraged to work closely with the congregational care team and the pastoral staff to provide on-going pastoral care for our congregation. Due to the nature of this course, enrollment is limited to the first twelve to register. $25 fee for book and materials.
