From the ChairThe past year has been pivotal for the Roseville Area Schools Foundation. As we approached our 25th year anniversary, the board worked with district staff to develop a multi-year initiative with a focus on hands-on learning, the Fab Lab, which will be presented at this year’s Fall luncheon.

This past year we awarded over $36,000 in grants to support a diverse number of innovative projects throughout the Roseville Area School district. A few examples include digital probes for data collection, an engineering and design program, non-fiction reading materials, books for English language learners, a 6th grade orchestra and band Masterclass, and small guitars and portable keyboards for elective music.

Part of these funds came from a $12,000 grant awarded to the Foundation from the St. Jude Medical Foundation, and were used specifically for projects in science, technology, engineering, and math. This allowed us to support projects that would otherwise have gone unfunded.

Despite this good news, we could only fund a third of the innovative projects submitted to the Foundation. We remain committed to providing a broad array of opportunities for students and hope you will consider increasing your donation this year. We hope that in the coming year we can support an increased number of educational projects throughout District 623.

On behalf of the board, we thank you for your generous support of the Roseville Area Schools Foundation. We are humbled and sincerely grateful for the growing number of community members who support our work to improve education in Roseville Area Schools. The Roseville Area Schools Foundation looks forward to your continued commitment to our public schools. We really cannot do this without you!

Sincerely,

Linda McLoonChair, Board of Directors 2015-2016Roseville Area Schools Foundation

Our MissionThe Roseville Area Schools Foundation invests in innovative ideas to enrich learning for all District 623 students. Goals• Support programs for learning, problem-solving, creative analysis, and thinking skills • Support the pursuit of excellence by staff• Assist in establishing a partnership between the educational community and local business, government, and nonprofit organizations• Reinforce the goals of the Roseville Area School Board

“Students rarely get a chance to see their writing transformed from a thought, to drafted sentences, and into a finished piece,” Ms. Amundsen said. “We published students’ books to motivate them to be lifelong readers and writers.”

Students planned, drafted, and revised their stories before seeing the final product made into a bound book. Each student received a copy as a keepsake.

Published Books GrantEmmet D. Williams ElementaryFirst grade teacher Amanda Amundsen used her Foundation grant to turn her students into authors. After learning about insects in science, students used their knowledge and the writing process to write their own books.

“This project allows students to create without limits, standards, or grades,” instructor Katherine Young said. “Removing the pressure of grades allows students to discover new art subjects and build confidence for everyday life.”

Artistically Elevated GrantRoseville Area Middle SchoolStudents in Unity Center, an after-school program that provides student and family support, can now experiment with professional art tools. While students are free to express themselves with their own ideas, they also have a chance to see themselves in creative careers.

Our BeginningIn 1990, community leaders began exploring ideas to make Roseville Area Schools a model for excellence and innovation. Robert O. Ashbach, a Roseville-area business leader, donated $53,000 to lay the groundwork for the Roseville Area Schools Foundation, which would financially support additional learning opportunities for students in Roseville Area Schools. Since then, the Foundation has awarded $681,400 in grants to support students in the classroom and beyond. Volunteer board members continue to look for ways to bring innovation and excellence into classrooms in Roseville Area Schools while carefully managing the community’s financial contributions to the Foundation.

The Art of Wet Felting GrantHarambee ElementaryKindergarten and first grade students learn more than just wet felting in Melissa Kleemeier’s class; they learn skills to pass state standards. As students learn how to wet felt, they are exposed to new vocabulary, read how-to texts, share research, and write informational pieces. They also develop fine motor skills, which are critical for the age group.

“At this time in the kindergarten year, a number of students struggle with activities involving fine motor skills, such as writing, drawing, coloring, and cutting,” Ms. Kleemeier said.

“Through the wet felting project, students are challenged to use and develop stamina of fine motor skills. ”

Your Dollars Making a DifferenceTaxes do a lot, but they do not always stretch far enough to fully meet the needs of our diverse learners. That’s where the Roseville Area Schools Foundation comes in. The Foundation invites the community to help raise funds for projects that bolster student learning, problem solving, creative analysis, and thinking skills.

Thanks to generous donations from community members like you, the Roseville Area Schools Foundation supports programs that prepare students for success in school and beyond.

GivingThe Roseville Area Schools Foundation relies on donations from community members and organizations to continue funding grants that will enrich students’ learning experiences. By supporting the Roseville Area Schools Foundation, you can join us in investing in the future of our community. As a 501(c)(3), the Roseville Area Schools Foundation is authorized to accept directed gifts, real estate, stocks and bonds, and to participate in estate planning trusts, in addition to accepting traditional monetary donations.

Engineering Alternatives to Indoor Recess GrantParkview Center SchoolWhen it rains, indoor recess has always offered competitive games. Recently, third grade teacher Eli Eschenbauch added building materials to facilitate teamwork and creativity as well.

“No longer do we just want kids entertained [at recess],” Mr. Eschenbauch said. “We want them to grow socially and experiment with engineering.”

Building materials allow students to develop problem-solving and social-emotional skills in a relaxed environment.

Mindful Students GrantHarambee ElementarySecond grade teacher Heidi Hexom taught her class mindfulness, a stress reduction strategy that raises awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, and surroundings. She practiced breathing exercises with her students to decrease stress that can hinder their achievement.

“Mindfulness helps improve learning, attention, emotional regulation, empathy, and conflict resolution,” Ms. Hexom said. “Equipping students with these strategies will enable them to handle challenges in a healthy way.”
