FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
The prophet Isaiah, in proclaiming the Word of God, said: Do not remember the former things or
consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing. Do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43:18-19a).
We are finally able to resume in-person worship again. For over two months, we have been doing
worship in a new way. Finally, things will be going back to normal, right? No. Of course not. Even return-
ing to in-person worship, things will be very different indeed. We will be wearing masks. We will not be
passing the offering plate or sharing the peace with handshakes or hugs. We will be trying to stay six feet
away from one another. Singing will be limited. Communion will be reduced in how often we do it and
changed in how we do it.
Some will balk at this. Some will say that we are being too afraid; that all of this is unnecessary.
Others will say that we should not be coming back yet at all. We will continue to tape the worship service
for those who are not yet comfortable returning to the sanctuary.
The bottom line is that there is indeed a risk, especially with singing. There is no way to make it
risk free. We need to pray for one another and do our best to balance the need for corporate worship
with the obligation to keep people safe.
Martin Luther had something to say about all this when the Black Plague swept through Europe in
1527.In his treatise “On Whether One May Flee from a Deadly Plague”, Luther wrote:
Therefore, I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, admin-
ister medicine, and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not
to become contaminated and thus perchance infect and pollute others.
Luther recognized that those who act recklessly saying “God will protect me” mock God. God has
given us medicines and common sense, and a commandment to love our neighbor. As a way to show our
love for our neighbor, we will be engaging in these safety precautions for some time.
But even though the way we worship will be changing, the work of the church must continue-to
proclaim the Word of God, to work for justice and peace in the world, including giving to those in need,
praying for one another, checking in on one another, and speaking out against sin, like the racism we
have seen in the news regarding the deaths of Ahmad Arbury and George Floyd.
God is with us as we maneuver these new waters. Together, even during this worldwide pandem-
ic, we will continue to praise and worship God, carry out his mission, love and care for our neighbor, and
proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, sharing God’s grace through prayer, witness, and service.
In the abiding hope of the empty tomb,
Pastor Larry
