FIRSTLEGOLeague(FLL)
FIRSTLEGOLeague......isaninternationaleducationprogramforchildrenaged914(1016inEurope)thatcombinesahandson,interactiveroboticscompetitionwithasportslikeatmosphere.Teamsconsistofupto10playerswiththefocusonsuchthingsasproblemsolving,creativity,analyticalthinking,andteambuilding.EachSeptember,anewChallengeisunveiledtoFIRSTLEGOLeague(FLL)teamsacrosstheworld.Then,overthecourseofabout8weeks,theystrategize,design,build,program,testandrefineafullyautonomousrobotcapableofcompletingthevariousmissionsoftheFLL"RobotGame"usingtheLEGOMindstormstechnology.Theyalsosearchtheweb,talktoscientists,visitthelibraryanddevelopcompellingpresentationsbasedontheFLLInternational"ResearchAssignment",whichrelatestoaproblemoropportunityfacingtheworldtoday.Intheend,theteamsmatchtheirresultswithothersincompetitions.Whileworkingontheprojecttheteamsexperienceallstepsofarealproductdevelopmentprocess:solvingaproblemwithtimepressure,notenoughresourcesandunknowncompetitors.

TheCoaches
Technologyprofessionalsareanexcellentchoicefortheroleofcoachtogetherwithteachersandparents.EachFLLteamismentoredby2to3coaches,ofwhomonemustberegisteredatSDN.Thecoaches'roleistofacilitateinstructionandoptimizethelearningexperienceoftheteammembersbyallowingindependentthought.Thecoachesmustbe18yearsorolderandshouldpossessthefollowingabilities:thedesiretoexploresidebysidewithchildren,goodcommunicationskills,prioritizingskills,andmultitaskingskills.CoachesdonotneedtechnicalexpertisebutmustbewillingtoacquiresomebasicknowledgeoftheprogrammingenvironmentandLEGOrobotbuilding.Asaregisteredteam,thecoacheswillhaveaccesstosoftwareandbuildinginstructionalmanualsfromFLL.
Thecoachesareaskedtokeepthemselvesandtheirteamalwaysintheloop.Therefore,theyaretocheckregularlytheiremailsandtheinternationalFLLhomepagewww.firstlegoleague.orgforcurrentinformation.TheyareresponsibleforregisteringtheirteamofficiallyatthelocalFLLpartnerassoonastheyhavereceivedtheconfirmationofparticipationbySAP,andforfindingthespacetopracticewiththeteam.
TheTeam
AnFLLteamconsistsof5upto10memberswhomustbebetweentheagesofnineand14(tenand16inEurope).FLLteamscanbepartofaschoolclassroom,afterschoolprogram,extracurriculargroup,homeschool,neighborhoodgroup,cluborcivicorganization.
TimeCommitment
InAugust,therobotsetwillbesenttoeachregisteredteamcoachbyGlobalCorporateSocialResponsibility.Thenteamscanstartmeeting
andexploringthesystem.However,theofficialcompetitiondoesnotbeginuntilSeptember5thwhenteamsreceivetheirofficialtaskandthefieldsetupkitfromtheirregionalFLLpartner.Teamsthensetouttocreatearobotthatfulfillstheserequirementsexactly.
Typically,teamsmeetonceortwiceaweektocompletetheirassignment,committingapproximately46hoursperweek(anoccasionalSaturdayorSundayisoftenaddedforthoseteamsgettingclosertotheirtournament).
InNovemberorDecember2008(insomecountriesonlyinearly2009),theFLLteamsmeetinlocalcompetitionstopresenttheirrobotsandresearchresults.DatesforlocalcompetitionsandthenationalchampionshipwillbeannouncedlaterintheyearbyyourlocalFLLpartnerorganization.
