save a chipped toothWhether it’s as a result of playing sports, leading an active lifestyle or an accident, a chipped tooth can occur at any time. While it is never pleasant, it’s not the end of the world. Here are a few tips on what to do if your tooth gets chipped.

• Don’t panic. Whatever event caused your tooth To become chipped has already occurred. There’s no use dwelling on it.

•Stay calm and take inventory. A cool head always prevails in these trying emergencies. Make sure that you do not have other injuries which are otherwise more significant. If you do, please call 911.

•Locate the tooth. Once you find the tooth, inspect the degree to which it is chipped. If it is minuscule, you may need to come into the office to have the tooth smoothed so that the edge is not jagged and you do not risk cutting your tongue or gums. If the chip is larger or in fact the whole tooth has been lost, immediately clean the tooth gently in a solution of milk and water and leave submerged in that liquid. Be sure not to remove any of the nerves or surrounding tissue. .•Come in. Conventional wisdom says that the best chance the patient has for saving the tooth occurs if the patient can get to the dentist within one hour of the accident. Once you’ve arrived, we will determine the best course of action.

Don’t worry! A chipped, broken or lost tooth is nothing that cannot be fixed seamlessly with the advancement of today’s dentistry

Your child’s first Dental Visit!!!!

Unless a problem is suspected, we would like to see your child for the first time when they are 3-4 years old. The most important goals of the first

visit are to introduce your child to the office surroundings and to develop a trust in Dr. Pateras and our staff. We view this visit as an “icebreaker”.

If the child is too frightened, uncomfortable or uncooperative, we will reschedule them to try again in about 6 months.

Be careful when discussing the visit with your child. NEVER use phrases

like “Be Brave” or “Don’t be afraid” because this leads them to believe that there is something to be scared of! Be positive and reassuring that the

visit will be fun and something to look forward to!

This first visit won’t take very long, maybe 15-30 minutes. During that time, we will do a gentle exam of the teeth, gums, jaws and oral tissues.

This is both to observe any problems and to establish a baseline so we can monitor your child’s growth and development over the next several years. Depending on your child’s age and cooperation, we may also clean and

polish their teeth and apply topical fluoride. We will try to answer any questions you may have at the time.

Our objective is to be gentle and patient so your child develops a positive

attitude towards our dental office and their oral health. This is the foundation that will carry your child through the rest of their lives!!

I am so excited to be the first team member to share with you one of my favorite things! I wanted to come up with something that everyone could go out and try if they wanted to! So, I recently discovered an

appetizer served by The Retreat in Liverpool that I think everyone should have at least once!! Their Buffalo Wing Dip is SO good!! It’s served with tortilla chips and is just amazing. It’s a bit on the spicy side so be sure to

have a nice, ice cold….. beverage ready!

What’s Dr. Chris up to???

It was an amazing event! The racing consisted of hundreds of races over three days. There’s lot’s of food and LOTS of fun!

What I was most impressed with, however, was our own local kids. Baldwinsville sent 4 boats and Liverpool sent 1. While some programs around the country start rowing in February, others row all year long. Our kids have just two short months to their season, so they are amazing to be so competitive!

My daughters competed very hard, did not move on to the finals, but had a tremendous experience. They can’t wait to go back. Next year, the Nationals will be held in Saratoga.

Insurance information from your Front Office Staff……..

If you have dental insurance, like most people, you want to know how much of your treatment will be covered and how much out of pocket cost will be for you before we begin. Most dental benefit plans arise from an agreement between an insurance company and your employer. There are literally hundreds of plans with endless variables concerning limitations, exclusions, deductibles, annual maximums, co-payments and fee schedules. If two patients work for different employers but have the same insurance company, you can be certain that their benefits will differ in one way or another. Often times, one employer may have many different plans or levels of coverage available to their employees. In that case, co-workers covered by the same company can have varying coverages. How your employer has chosen to write your policy is what will affect how your treatment is covered. Options such as waiting periods, coverage for pre-existing conditions, and alternate benefits for specific procedures is solely at the discretion of the employer.

We know that this can all be very confusing for our patients. That is why we make every effort to gather specific information regarding your coverage and relay that information back to you in language that you can understand.

We continuously call your insurance company and speak directly to a representative to get a detailed breakdown of benefits for your plan. This information is then keyed into our computer program and used to estimate your out of pocket costs. This generally works very well, however there are times when the the insurance company gives us inaccurate information. This, unfortunately, causes you to receive inaccurate information from us. The best way for you to help is to provide us with as much information as possible regarding your insurance policy. Having a copy of your insurance card is crucial because this is where we pull your policy and group numbers from. Another thing to bring in is your benefits package and fee schedule, if you have one. Because we are not a “preferred provider” on all plans, we sometimes cannot obtain this information in detail for you. Once we have had the opportunity to review your plan, we should be able to answer most of your questions regarding coverage. If there is ever any question as to how much will be covered, we can submit a Predetermination to your insurance company. The good news is that with a predetermination, we will know exactly how much your out of pocket cost will be. In fact, this is the ONLY way that we can guarantee your coverage. Without a predetermination, an estimate is just that, an estimate. The downside is that it often takes up to 6 weeks to get a predetermination processed and returned to us. If you are in a situation that is causing you pain, this may not be an option. Here’s something else for you to be aware of… There are times when your insurance company will only allow payment for the least expensive way to treat a dental problem, regardless of your choice or Dr. Pateras’ recommendation. Dr. Pateras will never base your treatment on what your insurance will or won’t cover. He makes his diagnosis and recommendation for treatment based on what is in your best interest. It is very important that you don’t rely on your insurance coverage to make decisions about your oral health care . They care about money, NOT YOUR TEETH!! Please know that we work very hard to give you our best. If our patients are upset, we are too! If you have questions regarding your benefits and coverage, please ask. If we don’t know the answer we can work together with you to get one!
