FIRST NATIONAL SCOUTS GO SOLAR WORKSHOP PBSA

Another milestone of PBSA towards Better World Framework/ WSEP is to organize first National Scouts go Solar Workshop at National Headquarters, Islamabad from 25 to 30 October 2016. PBSA organized this mega event with its own resources, without any external support. 54 scout leaders from all Provincial Associations of Pakistan and 3 leaders from Afghanistan (total 57) participated in this workshop. This great number of participants shows the interest towards renewable energy and this is obviously the success of SgS program in Pakistan. During the workshop sessions were delivered on environment and solar energy related topics. Besides this, participants went through the practical

work like soldering solar torch, making solar suitcase, making sunglasses, organizing solar workshops. Moreover they took part in group discussions and suggested how to promote solar energy and SgS activities. During the workshop, Pakistan Council of Renewable Energy Technologies (PCRET) organized an exhibition of photovoltaic material and solar thermal devices. This exhibition was a very good source of understanding the concepts and the importance of solar energy. At the end of the workshop participants submitted their personal concept paper and their future intension regarding the dissemination of SgS program at their local and provincial level.

INDIAN SCOUTS GO SOLAR During the National Jamboree, Indian Scouts and Guides went solar. SgS activities were presented under the WSEP in Better World Village. In order to create awareness about the usage of solar energy, Scouts go Solar makes children play car toy race, Solar Art and also make them understand the solar cookers and solar power stations.

“The activities here are fun. I enjoyed the games played using solar energy. They even briefed us about the working of the cost effective solar batteries and how they could be used to efficiently utilize the solar energy,” says Vedashree Prasad Puranik, 13 years old Guide from Maharashtra. Pankaj Gupta, project leader from Himachal Pradesh says, “The programmes are organized in a way that the scouts learn and have fun simultaneously.”

SGS ACTIVITIES IN MEXICO During last October 8th and 9th, we made a show on Scouts Go Solar during the making of the World’s Biggest Fleur de lis, by the Mexican Scouts Association on the main plaza of Mexico, the most important spot in Mexican history and culture. We made it on aluminum cans for recycling. We collected 1,000,400 cans. Many scouts participated keenly in SgS activities in a fun way, enjoyed Solar Art and tasted popcorn cooked on parabolic solar cooker. In December 2016, Scouts Go

Solar exhibition was arranged at the Rainbow Warrior tour at Mexico, Veracruz port in December, focus on Solar cooking with relation to the COP-13 Biodiversity Mainstreaming main subject for this meeting. Scouts go Solar was a big attraction for thousands of visitors who learned about the relation between Solar energy and Biodiversity. Thanks to Greenpeace for the inclusion and Solafrica for the support!

LITER OF LIGHT - SOLAR MAP OF PHILIPPINES

Liter of Light Philippines with the collaboration of BSP and Pepsi Philippines made solar map of Philippines. Scouts carrying illuminated solar lights were beautifully arranged in the form of map of Philippines. Uzair Kamal (APR/WOSM) said, “This is something new we are trying to bring up a more spice in Scouts Go Solar. Soon

we will retry to introduce Litter for Light to World through Scouting.” Liter of Light Philippines states, “Liter of Light PH would like to thank Boy Scouts Philippines and Pepsi Philippines for making the first ever Philippine Solar Map possible. All your hard work really paid off! Kudos to everyone who put the event together.”

SGS ACTIVITIES IN PILOT COUNTRY PHILIPPINES

Various SgS activities were held in Philippines during the last three months. Highlights of these activities are as under: Scouts Go Solar Roadshow was

Scouts Go Solar during the Central Luzon Regional Centenary Cub Camp held from Oct 6 to Oct 9 at Camp Kainomayan, Botolan, Zambales, Philippines (Post by: Dhong Roque)

Boy Scouts of Bacolod (Philippines) experienced Solar Cooking during the 19th Council Jamborette and KAB Olympics from October 26 to 30, 2016. Heat of the sun harnessed by the insulation foam in a solar powered cooker.

SGS ACTIVITIES IN PILOT COUNTRY PAKISTAN

SgS Awareness Workshop in Pakistan After the National SgS Workshop of

PBSA, the first response was a one day

SgS awareness workshop for

Government School Boys at Kamber

(District Shahdadkot) a far flung area of

Sindh province in Pakistan. Newly

trained Solar Scout Leader Waquas

Ahmed conducted this workshop.

SgS activities were organized for a

group of girls in scouting (Rose Group)

at NHQ PBSA on 13 November 2016.

After participating in these activities,

Girls were highly motivated towards the

solar energy.

On special request of Pak US Alumni

Network (PUAN)/ US Embassy in

Islamabad, SgS activities and solar

equipment/ gadgets were introduced to

the youth of PUAN from different

countries. A group of special students

and scouts of Islamabad BSA also

participated in these Solar Activities.

SGS FOR CUB SCOUTS El Salvador hosted a Central America

camp for cub scouts in the last week

of December 2016. During the

program SgS activities were

presented. Beside other SgS

activities, Solar Art and sundial were

the main solar activities for cub

scouts.

GOOD BYE STEFI Stefi Luginbühl Alassane has left the job as project leader of Scouts go Solar but I think she would not leave the advocacy and support to disseminate the awareness of renewable energies. She contributed a lot to make SgS program a success. Her efforts regarding SgS trainings and provision of materials will never be forgotten. She always extended her cooperation to all Solar Ambassadors and those who initiated to spread the solar knowledge. We hope she will continue her support to make the world a better place to live. On the eve of leaving job she sent a personal message but unfortunately we could not publish it in the previous issue of SgS e-newsletter. Here is the message:

PERSONAL MESSAGE I will be leaving my job as project leader of Scouts go Solar by the end of this month. It has been a tough decision, mainly because this project is not only successful, but also in my heart. As you can read in this Newsletter as well as the previous one, solar activities are happening all around the world. I can’t wish anything more than this. I want to say Thank You to all who have contributed to Scouts go Solar in the past years: Kuno Roth from Greenpeace who is the „father“ of this project, Hany Abdulmonem and Uzair Kamal from the WOSM Bureau who always have supported us, Amalie Obusan from Greenpeace South East Asia and Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Zahid Mahboob and global solar coordinator Asif Mahmood from the Pakistan Boy Scout Association, my team within Solafrica, our solar expert Mitch Götz, my assistants. The hostility and support from the KISC-Team. But mostly, I want to thank all the scouts who have become solar ambassadors and are driving this project to success, which means in the end: reduce global warming, thus creating a better world. Thank you!
