It is important to find a way to treat tuberculosis considering that it affects an alarming rate of two million people a year. Ms. Frances Rodriguez explained how glycolipids in Mycobacterium tuberculosis can be labeled in order to study the causes of the disease. Glycolipids are lipids with a carbohydrate attached to it. It is not an easy task to work with this mycobacteria because this pathogen has a very complex cell wall that contributes to its natural drug resistance. In conclusion, she described the process by which azide-modified trehalose(TreAz) analogues can be used to label trehalose glycolipids in the cell membrane of this mycobacterium. As part of the experimentation, the different mycobacterias that were used are Msmeg, BCG, and Mtb. These mycobacterias demostrated efficient labeling routes with the four TreAz analogues. Consequently, these routes can help in future investigations of the mycobacteria trehalome.
