Following up from my article last week giving thanks for Bishop Sylvester Treinen, I want to write today about another book and another bishop. The book is entitled A Still and Quiet Con-science by John A McCoy. It was recently published by Orbis Books and is the biography of
Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen, known to his friends as “Dutch.” Archbishop Hunhausen is the retired Archbishop Emeritus of Seattle, the former bishop of Helena, and is living at age 92 in his home area of Montana surrounded by his family. He became a bishop at exactly the same time as Bishop Treinen, only weeks before the opening of the Sec-ond Vatican Council. They became lifelong friends and Bishop Treinen as well as many other Idahoans are mentioned often in the book. The title and subtitle, A Still and Quiet Conscience , “The Archbishop who challenged a Pope, a President, and a Church,” refer to Dutch’s decision to oppose nuclear weapons, specifically the housing of the Trident submariners in the waters of Puget Sound, in his archdiocese of Seattle. The author traces how this very mild manner academic priest and bishop very gradually came to the conclusion that nuclear weapons were wrong, and found himself thrust on the national and international scene. It tells the story of the efforts of the Reagan Administration to have the Vatican silence Archbishop Hunthausen, and the things the Vatican did to try to end his career. I know Dutch and have known him for years. When he would come to Boise to visit Bishop Treinen he would often stay at Sacred Heart rectory, especially in the years that Father John Donoghue was pastor and I was associate pastor. I have seen him often in all the years since. He is a truly remarkable man. I was pastor at Sacred Heart during the years of the “Hunthausen Affair” with retired Bishop Nicolas Walsh living with me. Nic was a long term friend of Dutch’s and had been the assistant bishop with him in Seattle. He would spend hours each day on the phone when all of the Vati-can investigation was going on. We, at Sacred Heart, were very well informed about each and every event. This is a biography, not an effort to convert people to one or another position. Its value is in the story of how a man can grow and change all during his lifetime. That is Dutch’s story, and it is a model for all of us. I should add that when I told Dutch about the logo and symbol at Saint Mary’s, the three roses and the butterfly, signifying that Mary and all of us have to grow and change all during our lives, he was very pleased. I bought a copy of this book and gave it to our pastor, Father John Worster, and will give copies to my brothers for Christmas. It is worth reading. And I give thanks for people of conscience like Archbishop Hunthausen and others I have known. They are indeed role models for me. Fr. Tom Faucher
Primer Domingo de Adviento, Ciclo "A" (2016-17). Comienza un nuevo año litúrgico (ciclo A). La liturgia es el culto público ofrecido a Dios por medio de Cristo y su Iglesia. La liturgia es la fuente de donde mana toda la fuerza y unidad de la Iglesia; y de la deben beber todo los fieles. Es decir, nosotros no sólo confesamos lo que creemos sino que lo celebramos (en la liturgia) y lo vivimos (nuestra conducta). El año litúrgico es, pues, la celebración/actualización del misterio de Cristo en el tiempo; pero no debe ser sólo un calendario de fechas, sino un camino de fe: camino que se ha de recorrer como en espiral; es decir, creciendo y madurando en la fe cada año de nuestra vida.El año litúrgico se fija a partir del ciclo lunar, siendo la clave la luna llena que se presenta entre el mes de marzo o de abril, porque el eje sobre el que gira todo el año litúrgico es la Pascua. El año litúrgico está formado por distintos tiempos litúrgicos: comienza con el Adviento, luego viene la Navidad, Epifanía, Primer tiempo ordinario, Cuaresma, Semana Santa, Pascua, Pentecostés, Segundo tiempo ordinario y termina con la fiesta de Cristo Rey. En cada tiempo litúrgico, el sacerdote y el diácono se revisten de diferentes colores: blanco, significa alegría y pureza; se utiliza en los tiempos de Navi-dad y Pascua. Verde, significa esperanza; se utiliza en el tiempo ordinario. Morado, significa luto y penitencia; se usa en Adviento, Cuaresma y Semana Santa. Rojo, significa el fuego del Espíritu Santo y el martirio; se utiliza en las fiestas de Pentecostés y de los santos mártires. Al comenzar un nuevo año litúrgico invito a todos los miembros de nuestra parroquia a celebrar los misterios de nuestra fe con devoción y continu-idad. Mi deseo es que todos crezcamos un poco más en santidad, hermandad y unidad. Que nos asemejemos más a Cristo, nuestro Maestro.

First Sunday Of Advent, Cycle "A" (2016-17). A new liturgical year is about to begin (Cycle A). Liturgy is the public worship that we offer to God through Christ and his Church. The liturgy is the fountain that all the strength and unity of the Church comes from and all the faithful shall drink. For example, we do not just profess what we believe but we also celebrate it (with the liturgy) and live it (with our behavior). The liturgical year, then, is a celebration of the mystery of Christ in time. But it should not be just a matter of calendar with specific dates to remember, but also a journey of faith, a process that should go in spiral. It means growing and maturing in the faith every year of our life. The liturgical year is set based on the lunar cycle. The key moment is the full moon between March or April, as the very the axis for the liturgical calendar is Easter. The liturgical year is subdivided inyo different liturgical times. It starts with Advent, then Christmas, Epiphany, First Ordinary Time, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, Second Ordinary Time and it finishes with the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. With each liturgical time, the priests and the deacons are dressed in different colors. White means joy and purity and is used at Christmas and Easter time. Green means hope and is used for Ordinary time. Purple means suffering and penitence and is used in Advent, Lent and Holy Week. Red means the fire of the Holy Spirit and martyrdom and is used on the Pentecost and Holy Martyrs feast days. I want to invite every member from our parish to start this new liturgical year celebrating the mysteries of our faith with devotion and continuity. My desire is that we all grow a little bit more in sanctity, brother-hood and unity. The liturgical year can help us to be more Christ-like people.
