Hi Everyone As we start the advent season, it seems like a good time to reflect on a few of the other ways we as a parish have worked towards Christ’s Kingdom on Earth. Social justice and Outreach ministries/programmes are, of course, a type of “action prayer” that helps to build God’s Kingdom. Currently, our Diocese is mapping all areas of “action” and need. Each parish has been asked to have the individuals who head ministries/programmes that deal with social justice or outreach to give a detailed report on how they operate, aims, accomplish- ments and cost etc. For Holy Apostles this has been quite a job as we have 20+ reports to pro- duce. I wish to thank all those individuals who took time out of their busy schedules to work on these requested documents. Most of the time we just want to get on with what the Lord has called us to do and not mess around with paperwork. So, thank you once again. What this exercise highlighted, was how active we are at Holy Apostles in reaching out to others: be it in our own community, the wider community or in far off lands. In reviewing the paper- work, I can happily report that we are touching the very young, school age, the elderly, house- bound, homeless, male and female and all socio-economic groups. We are helping to make the streets safer, fighting for a living wage for those who hold the humblest positions, better condi- tions for children in detention camps and clean water all over the world. In Kenya, we have pur- chased boats, wells and help to build vital facilities. We have raised money for Trinity Hospice, Pax Christi, Cafod and many other charities/programmes in a variety of ways that have included: dinner dances, BBQs, sponsored walks, raffles, auctions, lunches, bake sales etc. We have had fun and fellowship as we have been building the Kingdom, to numerous to name. We have in- vested a lot of our personal time and energy in the diverse ministries/programmes doing “action prayer”. Wendy Kirton (pictured) recently won an award for leading her team in establishing CitySafe on Lupus Street. This Thursday our Homeless Project starts again. It will feed and give shelter to 15 individuals on a weekly basis through March. We’ll be working in conjunction with six other local churches. Please contact Ben and Hyacithe Mutin 0777 54 51 140 to be par t of the team. In the New Year, we will be actively partnered with the Tressell Trust Foodbank in Victoria. Check the website under “Parish Profile” for a more complete list of our ministries and programmes. Perhaps consider, that part of your Advent preparations will include investing a bit of yourself, just a couple of hours, to do “active prayer” building God’s kingdom. Get the kids involved, too. Hi Everyone

As we start the advent season, it seems like a good time to reflect on a few of the other ways we

as a parish have worked towards Christ’s Kingdom on Earth.

Social justice and Outreach ministries/programmes are, of course, a type of “action prayer” that

helps to build God’s Kingdom. Currently, our Diocese is mapping all areas of “action” and need.

Each parish has been asked to have the individuals who head ministries/programmes that deal

with social justice or outreach to give a detailed report on how they operate, aims, accomplish-

ments and cost etc. For Holy Apostles this has been quite a job as we have 20+ reports to pro-

duce. I wish to thank all those individuals who took time out of their busy schedules to work on

these requested documents. Most of the time we just want to get on with what the Lord has called

us to do and not mess around with paperwork. So, thank you once again.

What this exercise highlighted, was how active we are at Holy

Apostles in reaching out to others: be it in our own community,

the wider community or in far off lands. In reviewing the paper-

work, I can happily report that we are touching the very young, school age, the elderly, house-

bound, homeless, male and female and all socio-economic groups. We are helping to make the

streets safer, fighting for a living wage for those who hold the humblest positions, better condi-

tions for children in detention camps and clean water all over the world. In Kenya, we have pur-

chased boats, wells and help to build vital facilities. We have raised money for Trinity Hospice,

Pax Christi, Cafod and many other charities/programmes in a variety of ways that have included:

dinner dances, BBQs, sponsored walks, raffles, auctions, lunches, bake sales etc. We have had

fun and fellowship as we have been building the Kingdom, to numerous to name. We have in-

vested a lot of our personal time and energy in the diverse ministries/programmes doing “action

prayer”.

Please contact Ben and Hyacithe Mutin 0777 54 51 140 to be part of

the team. In the New Year, we will be actively partnered with the Tressell Trust Foodbank in Victoria. We’ll do some food drives and

those who would like to be helping hands, please contact Fr Pat or me to join that team. Or consider joining us to sing some Christ-

mas Carols with a Twist on Thursday 13 December 5-7pm in Whitehall—it is part of the Living Wage campaign for government of-

fice cleaners. Check the website under “Parish Profile” for a more complete list of our ministries and programmes.

Perhaps consider, that part of your Advent preparations will include investing a bit of yourself, just a couple of hours, to do “active

prayer” building God’s kingdom. Get the kids involved, too. It is never too early to learn the real meaning of Christmas.

In this Year of Faith - Why I am Catholic

Why am I a Catholic? I am a Catholic first of all because my non Catholic

mother kept the promise she made on her wedding day - that she would

bring me up as a Catholic. In 1940 the non Catholic in a mixed marriage

had to make this promise. My father was not a practising Catholic when

they got engaged, but when my mother found out he was a Catholic, she

insisted that they married in a Catholic church because she didn't want

to upset her future mother in law.

When I was born she arranged for my

baptism in Westminster Cathedral, because

we lived in Vauxhall Bridge Road. When it

was time to go to school in 1946 she sent

me to St Vincent's School in Carlisle Place

and asked a Catholic neighbour to take my

brother and I to Mass with her children.

She was so impressed with what I had

learned at school and at Mass she wanted

to know more. She started to take us to

Mass herself. Instead of my parents teaching me about my faith, the

roles were reversed. My mother's thirst for faith made me her teacher

at a very early age This way my faith was increased and learned

everything I could, to pass it on to her. She eventually became a

Catholic , in 1971.

The Mass was very important to me. I started to go to daily mass in 1977

and to read the bible, I decided to lead a more spiritual life, and follow

more closely the teachings of Christ. I asked him to show me what he

wanted me to do in my life. Jesus changed from being a historic figure

whose teachings I followed, to a friend I talked to and loved. I learned to

listen to him speaking to me through the people I met and who have

touched my life with their goodness.

During this year of faith maybe you would write about 350 to 400 words on

Why I am a Catholic. It is good for us to hear about each other’s journey of

faith. Each submission will be anonymous. Please send yours to Fr Pat or Judy

tea and coffee

It’s fun to help out serving tea and coffee after 10.30 Mass on

Sunday. A great informal way of getting to put names to faces in the parish. Commit-

ment: Half an hour before Mass and an hour afterwards once a month on a rota basis.

That is 32 men doing it just once. Can we not manage that in our parish? Come on Guys. Help out! Ask friends at work to do it with you. If we cannot get people to sleep over we have to cancel the whole project. Call Ben on 0777 545 1140 or email [email protected] Father Pat

I am Spanish, Catholic, have just finished a master in International Law in the Netherlands and I would like to move to London. I wonder whether perhaps in your Parish there might be old people, families or just people who needs some help (for instance with cleaning, shopping, etc.) or just companionship and who in exchange for that and a reasonable rent would be willing to host me, at least temporarily.
