    HOLY EUCHARIST

    THE ACCLAMATION

Celebrant Blessed be God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

People And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

    THE COLLECT FOR PURITY

Celebrant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

    THE SUMMARY OF THE LAW

Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ says: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.

    Matthew 22:37-40

    Celebrant Lord have mercy.

    People Christ have mercy.

    Celebrant Lord have mercy.

    THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

    People And with your spirit.

    Celebrant Let us pray.

Celebrant Eternal Father, at the baptism of Jesus you revealed him to be your Son, and your Holy Spirit descended upon him like a dove: Grant that we, who are born again by water and the Spirit, may be faithful as your adopted children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

    THE LESSONS

    Isaiah 42:1-9

Behold my servant, whom I uphold my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: “I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.”

    The Word of the Lord.

    People Thanks be to God.

    Psalm 89:20-29

20 I have found David my servant; *

with my holy oil have I anointed him.

21 My hand shall hold him fast, *

and my arm shall strengthen him.

22 The enemy shall not be able to do him violence; *

the son of wickedness shall not hurt him.

  • 5

23 I will smite his foes before his face *

and strike down those who hate him.

24 My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him, *

and in my Name shall his horn be exalted.

25 I will give him dominion over the sea, *

and with his right hand shall he rule the rivers.

26 He shall say to me, “You are my Father, *

my God, and the rock of my salvation.”

27 And I will make him my firstborn, *

higher than the kings of the earth.

28 My mercy will I keep for him for ever, *

and my covenant shall stand fast with him.

29 His seed will I make to endure for ever *

and his throne as the days of heaven.

    Acts 10:34-38

So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

    The Word of the Lord.

    People Thanks be to God.

    THE HOLY GOSPEL (please stand)

    People and Choir sing twice

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

    Mark 1:7-11

And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

People and Choir repeat Festival Alleluia once

    THE SERMON (Seated)

THE RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS (Please stand)

Celebrant Through the Paschal mystery, dear friends, we are buried with Christ by Baptism into his death, and raised with him to newness of life. I call upon you, therefore to renew the solemn promises and vows of Holy Baptism, by which we once renounced the devil and all his works, and promised to serve God faithfully in his one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

Celebrant Do you, here in the presence of God and the Church, renew the solemn promises and vows made at your Baptism and commit yourself to keep them?

    People I do.

Celebrant Do you renounce the Devil and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God?

    People I renounce them.

Celebrant Do you renounce the empty promises and deadly deceits of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God?

    People I renounce them.

Celebrant Do you renounce the sinful desires of the flesh that draw you from the love of God?

    People I renounce them.

  • 7

Celebrant Do you turn to Jesus Christ and confess him as your Lord and Savior?

    People I do.

Celebrant Do you joyfully receive the Christian Faith, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments?

    People I do.

Celebrant Will you obediently keep God’s holy will and commandments, and walk in them all the days of your life?

People I will, the Lord being my helper.

Celebrant Let us now reaffirm our faith in the words of the ancient baptismal confession, the Apostles’ Creed.

Celebrant Do you believe and trust in God the Father?

People I do. I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Celebrant Do you believe and trust in Jesus Christ?

People I do. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried: He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Celebrant Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit?

People I do. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the head cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

At this time the Celebrant sprinkles the congregation with Holy Water to help us recall our own baptism.

People Sing I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus. God set the stars to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus. In him there is no darkness at all. The night and the day are both alike. The Lamb is the light of the city of God. Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.

    THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Deacon Let us pray for the Church and for the world, saying, “hear our prayer.”

For the peace of the whole world, and for the well-being and unity of the people of God.

Deacon Lord, in your mercy. People Hear our prayer.

For Foley, our Archbishop, and Ryan and Keith, our Bishops, and Andrew and Greg, our Priests, and John, our Deacon, and for all the clergy and people of our Diocese and Congregation.

Deacon Lord, in your mercy. People Hear our prayer.

For all those who proclaim the Gospel at home and abroad; and for all who teach and disciple others, especially our mission partners in the DFW Chaplaincy, Mexico, Malawi, and New Zealand.

Deacon Lord, in your mercy. People Hear our prayer.

For our brothers and sisters in Christ who are persecuted for their faith.

Deacon Lord, in your mercy. People Hear our prayer.

For our nation, for those in authority, and for all in public service especially our President, Donald Trump.

Deacon Lord, in your mercy. People Hear our prayer.

For all those who are in trouble, sorrow, need, especially … those in sickness, especially… or those in any other adversity especially…

Deacon Lord, in your mercy. People Hear our prayer.

For all those who have departed this life in the certain hope of the resurrection in thanksgiving, let us pray.

Deacon Lord, in your mercy. People Hear our prayer.

At this time, you are invited to add your own thanksgiving, either silently or aloud.

  • 9

Deacon and People Lord, you know what is best for our church family. Give us what you will, when you will, and as much as you will. Do with us as you think best, and as it pleases you and brings you the most honor. Place each of us where you will, and use us according to your wisdom. We are in your hand as your servants, ready to do all that you command. We want to live, not for ourselves, but for you. We want to serve you fittingly, and faithfully, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

The Celebrant concludes with the following prayer

Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION OF SIN

Deacon All who truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and seek to live in love and charity with your neighbors, and intend to lead the new life, following the commandments of God, and walking in his holy ways: draw near with faith and make your humble confession to Almighty God.

Please stand or kneel in silence.

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

maker and judge of us all:

We acknowledge and lament our many sins and offenses,

which we have committed by thought, word, and deed,

    against your divine majesty,

provoking most justly your righteous anger against us.

    We are deeply sorry for these our transgressions;

the burden of them is more than we can bear. Have mercy upon us,

    have mercy upon us, most merciful Father;

for your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,

    forgive us all that is past;

and grant that we may evermore serve and please you in newness of life,

    to the honor and glory of your Name;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE COMFORTABLE WORDS (Please remain standing or kneeling)

The Celebrant may then say one or more of the following sentences, first saying

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1:15

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2

    THE PEACE (Please stand)

Celebrant The Peace of the Lord be always with you.

    People And with your spirit.

Then the Ministers and People may greet one another in the name of the Lord.

The People remain standing. The Celebrant faces them and says

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

    People And with your spirit.

    Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The Celebrant proceeds It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who took on our mortal flesh to reveal his glory; that he might bring us out of darkness and into his own glorious light. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

    THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Celebrant Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son Jesus Christ into the world for our salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the Cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body, which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People Christ has died.

    Christ is risen.

    Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Word and Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may worthily receive this holy Sacrament, and be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us and we in him. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us with all your saints into the joy of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (Please remain standing or kneeling)

Celebrant And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory

    forever and ever. Amen.

THE FRACTION (Please remain standing or kneeling)

Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us

People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

THE PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS (Please remain standing or kneeling)

Celebrant and People We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord,

    trusting in our own righteousness,

but in your abundant and great mercies.

We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table.

But you are the same Lord, whose character is always to have mercy.

    Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord,

so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood,

that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body,

and our souls washed through his most precious blood,

and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Saint Barnabas is pleased to be involved in a community wide effort to share the word of God with Fort Worth.

We will be part of a group that is committed to praying, studying, and meeting together for one hour a week for the purpose of starting a new Bible Study in our area of Fort Worth. It is something that is not just for one church but for the whole community. The ministry is called Community Bible Study and there is a great curriculum and leaders that will help lead us through their process for launching the class.

The first step is for us to gather for an informational meeting on January 13th. To learn more about the ministry and what it means to be a part of an Impact Group in our community.

All the meetings will be held via Zoom - so there could not be an easier and more perfect time for us to walk through this process together.

We hope you will come and see, as it will grow you in your relationship with the Lord and help you learn how to engage the Bible more fully yourself!

Please reach out to Kristi Heffron, for more information.
