21st Century Skills

The goal for this project was to introduce 21st Century skills to the classroom with lessons using Reading/Critical Thinking, Writing/Communication, and Technology/Creativity strategies.

Lesson 1 - Reading/Critical ThinkingMarven of the Great North Woods

This lesson was an introduction to the book Marven of the Great North Woods by Kathryn Lasky

His objective was to make inferences from the text using anunderstanding of word relationships and meanings to drawconclusions and solve problems.

-Taylor went through the illustrations to predict outcomes-Used vocabulary flashcards from text-Listened to the story and followed along in the text-Completed a worksheet on problem solving

Lesson 2 Writing/CommunicationPersonal Narrative

Objective is that he will be able to use knowledge and discussions to generate and develop ideas to write a personal narrative

-Read the text Marven of the Great North Woods as an introduction to personal narratives

-We discussed narrative writing as when a storyteller (narrator) describes an event or series of events which can either be fiction or non-fiction

-We wrote out the characteristics of a personal narrativeCharacter-what do they look like? sound like?Setting-where is it? what time?Plot-sequence of events in storyChange-what did the characters learn? how did they change?

-Using a planning sheet create their focus for own personal narrative

Lesson 3 Technology/CreativityComic Book Creator

The objective of this lesson was for Taylor to usetechnology to express his personal narrative throughvisual storytelling in a fun and creative way.

-Using his comic planning sheet Taylor mapped out his story-He learned how to format Comic Creator and chose his six frame comic strip-Using the images, captions and the speech and thought bubbles he created his comic template-Printed, colored and shared his story with his classmates
