First United Methodist Church Mixes the Secular and the Sacred withAugust Worship Series
July 22, 2013—Broadway lovers will get a treat each Sunday in August when First United Methodist Church,900 S. Shoreline Blvd., presents “The Bible and Broadway,” a series of worship services utilizing the themesfrom four well-known Broadway productions.
Rev. Greg Hackett, Senior Pastor, will be preaching on subject matter related to each of the productions, and theChancel Choir will present some of each show’s music at both worship services at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. in thesanctuary.
Sunday, August 4, will take its material from Annie (music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, andthe book by Thomas Meehan). Rev. Hackett’s sermon, “Tomorrow,” will be taken from the text of Colossians3:1–11.
Sunday, August 11, Rev. Hackett will be preaching from the text of Revelations 21:1–7 in his sermon “IDreamed a Dream” derived from Les Misérables (music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, original French lyrics byAlain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, with an English-language libretto by Herbert Kretzmer).
“Popular,” with text Romans 8:38–39, will be August 18’s title, taken from Wicked (music and lyrics byStephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman).
Finally on August 25, Rev. Hackett will preach “Circle of Life,” based on the text Isaiah 42:5–9 with themesand music for The Lion King (music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice, along with the musical scorecomposed by Hans Zimmer with choral arrangements by Lebo M., based on the movie by Irene Mecchi,Jonathan Roberts and Linda Woolverton).

RESTAURANT ROUND-UP Statewide dine-out event promotes fresh Texas-grown foods, benefits Texas food banks
Recognizing Texas-grown food and beverages are big on flavor and nutrition and provide a major impact on the Texaseconomy, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples today encouraged diners to support Texas farmers and ranchers by eatingat restaurants participating in the sixth annual GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up, presented by Farm Credit, between July22-28. GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up is the only weeklong, statewide dine-out event in Texas showcasing more than 400restaurants that serve the finest locally-produced food and beverages.
“When you dine out, make sure the restaurant serves fresh food straight from a Texas farm or ranch,” Commissioner Staplessaid. “The GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up brings together the best offerings of Texas produce, meats, cheeses andbeverages through the creativity of our local chefs. By dining out during the Round-Up, consumers give back to our economyand help contribute to area food banks.”
Along with supporting Texas farmers and ranchers, the GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up helps feed hungry Texans.Participating Round-Up restaurants have pledged to donate more than $40,000 to local food banks. That money will allowTexas food banks to provide more than 300,000 meals for hungry Texans. That’s eating out for a good cause.
“The Texas Food Bank Network thanks all of the restaurants participating in the GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up for theirsupport of our efforts to feed the hungry,” said Celia Cole, CEO of the Texas Food Bank Network. "Over one-in-fourchildren—1.9 million children—in Texas are at risk of hunger, threatening their ability to grow into healthy and productiveadults. Our 21 member food banks distributed enough food last year to provide over 2.3 million meals and serve over threemillion needy Texans. Support from local businesses like the GO TEXAN restaurants helps us nourish needy Texans in everycommunity across the state.”
Farm Credit Bank of Texas has generously sponsored the statewide dine-out event since its inception six years ago.
“The GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up is a great way to highlight the connection between the agriculture industry and theconsumer,” said Stan Ray, chief administrative officer for Farm Credit Bank of Texas. “As a lender to the agriculture industry,we’re proud to be part of an event that supports the hardworking farmers and ranchers we serve, while supporting localeconomies and food banks throughout the state.”
Across the Lone Star State, GO TEXAN restaurants will highlight special meal options made with ingredients such as beef,poultry, pork, seafood and produce all grown and raised in Texas. Many restaurants will pair these meals with the best ofTexas wines, beer and other beverages made right here in the Lone Star State.
“Using local ingredients is a vital component to a strong, healthy economy,” said Kerbey Lane Executive Chef Joel Welch.“By incorporating local products in our business, we are insuring that the suppliers of these products prosper and thrive inwhat might otherwise be a scary economical time.
