Much of the book consists of measurements, numbers, and details that make this big-picture girl's eyes glaze over. But one day my morning reading landed in Numbers. After letting out a sigh, I read on, asking God to speak to me as I read all kinds of numbers related to the building of God's temple. And then it hit me. God cares about every little detail. He cared about how the Temple was built. He counts the hairs on our heads. He holds each of our tears in a bottle. He doesn't just care about the big picture; God actually cares about every detail of my life and yours. Numbers matter! And if they matter to God, they must matter to us. There are 27 million reasons to fight modern day slavery aka human trafficking. And each of them has a name, a personality, and a special place in God's heart. Over 100,000 of those are children sold into the sex industry in the U.S. There are 32 billion reasons why it won't be an easy fight. That's how many dollars this criminal industry brings in for its proprietors every year. There are 200 reasons to pray and ask God to help us discern how we can help. That's how many beds there are in the U.S. for rescued victims. Nowhere close to the number that is needed. There are THREE reasons this is relevant to us in Temple, TX. That’s how many traffickers were arrested only a week ago for forcing a teenage girl into prostitution in Cen- tral TX. There is ONE reason we cannot look the other way. That reason is JESUS CHRIST, who came to "proclaim re- lease to the prisoners...and liberate the oppressed, and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." (Luke 4:18-19) We represent Christ in the world. So, we must carry on with his mission. First United Methodist, Temple, receives

Warnick Award for Best History

FUMC has won the Kate Warnick Award for best local

history of a United Methodist congregation with more than

1,000 members.

The book, “How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place” was

commissioned to commemorate the centennial of the sanctuary,

completed in 1913.

The Warnick Award, open to churches in Texas and

parts of New Mexico and Oklahoma, is named for long-time

curator of the Methodist Collection at Bridwell Library, Perkins

School of Theology, Southern Methodist University.

The announcement was made recently at the Texas

United Methodist Historical Society meeting in Dallas. “The

purpose of the Warnick award is to encourage and celebrate the

research, writing, and publication of histories of local

churches,” said award chairman, W. J. “Bill” Bryan III of Dal-

las. First United Methodist will be recognized at the Central

Texas Annual Conference in June.
