The Lord says: Do not cling to events of the past or dwell on what happened long ago. Watch for the new thing I am going to do. It is happening already—you can see it now!

(Isaiah 43:18-19)

The exciting things we’ve been talking about for several years are finally happening here at First United Presbyterian Church!

Significant financial gifts have already been provided to undergird our outreach through Seven Hills Homeless Shelter and our support of Dwight Mission’s capital campaign.

We have purchased and are using a low-mileage, new-to-us bus that is already helping to reshape our ability to provide transportation to and from church ministries and programs.

The Fellowship Hall HVAC system that was failing has been replaced. A new Family Ministries Task Force has been convened, and has approved the purchase

and installation of a new projection system for our Fellowship Hall. At our April meeting, the Session approved proceeding with the Sanctuary renovation

project that will enable us to be more hospitable and welcoming to visitors and members, help our worship engage families and younger members more vitally, and maximize the warmth and love that has long been a hallmark of this wonderful congregation (see the article on page 10 by Ted Belden, chair of the Sanctuary Area Renovation Task Force).

Sanctuary construction will begin on Monday, June 18, and will continue for several months. Through the summer and early fall, we will be worshipping in the Fellowship Hall, where older members of our congregation remember worshipping for the first decade of our life together after the move to Presbyterian Hill in the 1960s. The Sunday morning schedule will remain the same over the summer.

Through the month of May, we will continue the worship theme of “Our Resurrection Hope” from I Peter. May 6 is graduation Sunday, and Brianne Christiansen, our Co-Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, will be preaching. Pentecost is May 20, which will be an exciting celebration of some of the many ways the Holy Spirit is moving in our midst.

Then beginning June 3, we will start a new worship theme entitled “God’s People on the Move.” Our goal over the summer will be to experience the various exciting ways God’s people have worshipped over the millennia and centuries in a wide variety of places and worship spaces. We’ll focus on how God’s presence can be more deeply experienced, appreciated, and honored in the midst of change.

During this exciting time, it is especially important for all of us to be in close and candid communication about whatever concerns and needs may develop. Please feel free to share feelings, thoughts, and pastoral needs with any member of the Session or your pastors as you respond to the changes that are taking place. With Rev. Jan Butin on sabbatical this summer, I will attempt to do everything I can to provide the personal pastoral care that you need. However, I will be carrying the responsibility of two pastors on one set of shoulders for these months. We will need to rely on our Deacons, Stephen ministers, and the care we have always extended to one another in order for as many needs as possible to be met.

God is here! Let us be prayerfully attentive to the Spirit’s movement as we care for one another through this exciting time of growth!

Blessings, Rev. Phil Butin

Rev. Jan Butin’s Sabbatical Begins

The Presbytery of Arkansas requires that terms of call for any full-time pastor include a sabbatical break after seven years of service and we view this as a “gift of caring” to our pastors. . A sabbatical is a time for our pastor(s) to shift gears, rest, disengage, study, reflect, and travel to return to ministry among us refreshed and renewed in body, mind, and spirit.

Rev. Jan Butin will begin her sabbatical following worship on May 6 and will return August 4. She intends to use part of this time to visit congregations locally, statewide, and nationally. Her interest is in common characteristics, attitudes, patterns, and ways of being Christian that these congregations share. She is interested not only in “Sunday morning” exploration, but also in health and life of congregations “from Sunday to Sunday.” The other component of Jan’s time away will be permission to simply rest, relax, and be restored to be effective in a new way afterwards. She will be in Fayetteville at times and you may see her out and about –but we ask that you allow the full time of her sabbatical to be away from all church roles and responsibilities.

Pastoral care will be handled by Rev. Phil Butin and other clergy within our congregation, our Deacons and our Stephen Ministers. Her other duties will be shared by other leaders within our church staff and congregation.

If you have any questions about Jan’s sabbatical, please feel free to contact any member of the 2018 Personnel Team.

Children are an important part of worship here at FUPC! Children of all ages are invited to lead the call to worship, prayer of confession, or passing of the peace. This can be done independently or with the help of a parent, grandparent, or older sibling. Children in third grade and above may also sign up to acolyte! If your child would enjoy helping during worship, please visit with Kristi Button ([email protected]).

We have a special Time with Children in worship each week. Afterward, children under five years old may stay for the entire service or join our talented caregivers in Lower Witherspoon. Children’s worship packets are available each Sunday.

Childcare is provided in Lower Calvin for children under three years old where children hear a special Bible story each week.

Sanctuary Task Force Update At the April Session meeting, the Session approved that the Sanctuary Task Force move forward with negotiating a contract which the Session would execute with Milestone Construction for a cost not to exceed $1,027,451.

The Session has already allocated funds to repair the roof of the sanctuary, and this proposed contract will include the cost of that improvement. The construction cost for building improvements includes a $15,000 contingency, but does not include the cost of furniture or fixtures.

To meet budget, the scope of the project had to be reduced in two major areas: (1) we will not build the covered drop-off area by the kitchen; and (2) nor will we build the bridge walk-way that would connect the west entrance of the sanctuary to the existing bridge. These two items would cost an additional $105,000, and were not felt to be a high priority. The plans for the work can be viewed on our web site.

One item that was added to the scope of work is the enhancement to the east entry at the rear of the sanctuary used by individuals coming in from the handicapped parking lot at the top of Birwin Street. We will eliminate the curb, rework the sidewalk, and provide a covered entrance to the sanctuary at that door.

We anticipate that the Session will sign the contract in early May so that the contractor can begin to order materials and prepare for major construction. It is anticipated that construction will begin Monday June 18 after Fathers Day.

In April we learned about life and change. Incubators in our older two year old, and three year old classrooms allowed students to observe the progression of eggs as they hatched into little chicks. Our caterpillars arrived on April 23 around the week of May 7 we will watch as they emerge from their chrysalis as beautiful butterflies! The annual picnic is May 4 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. This is our favorite event of the year! It’s a First School family party! We will have entertainment, the Kona Ice truck, some activities for the kids, a meal of hamburger/hot dogs with all the fixings, and a silent auction! Wristbands are $8 per person and are available in the First School Office. The picnic will be in the courtyard in front of the sanctuary. We would appreciate any items that you could donate or collect from area businesses to be sold during the silent auction. No item is too big or too small. Contact Cathy Hairston (571-4516) if you would like to make a donation. A tax-deductible donation form is available. Money raised will be put towards modifications to the big kid playground to meet new Child Services requirements.

A Word From the Library How many Bibles do you have on your shelves at home? An American Library Association survey indicated that the hardest book to dispose of was the Bible. Unlike flag protocol, there are no specific scriptural instructions for the disposition of Bibles. Although getting rid of a Bible does not diminish the value of the Scripture, people are reluctant to do so. It is not easy to understand that there is nothing wrong with respectfully disposing of a Bible. To no one’s surprise, libraries are the number one recipients of Bibles and the FUPC library is no exception. We have a section of shelves devoted to historic and current Bibles, but we receive far too many for the space allocated. Bibles that are ripped, torn or unusable are disposed of, and current usable editions are placed in classrooms. For others we try to find a reputable home, but this is becoming an increasingly difficult task. Locally, there are still a few places that accept Bible donations (charitable organizations, Christian schools, smaller churches, and social service organizations), but this too is a dwindling option. Although we continue to seek reputable ‘homes’ for Bibles, we must remember that the words and meanings of the Bible are more important than what happens to the actual book.
