Remember the style of fighting in the Great War? Describe it.
If you were designing a new army that would not get bogged down stuck in protective trenches, what
would it look like?
What would it have?
Why was Hitler so appealing to Germans?
• Think of the problems Germany faced:
– Humiliation after The Great War
– Weak economy because of reparations
– Inability to protect self: tiny military
• Which of these was dictated by Versailles Treaty?
• ALL OF THEM
• Hitler promised to undo all of that
Hitler to Power
• Hitler tried to overthrow the German Government in 1924
• He was caught, and thrown in jail
• At his trial, he was able to showcase his beliefs– Renounce Treaty of Versailles
– The politicians, communists and Jews caused all their problems
• He was sentenced to prison – took time to write MEIN KAMPF (“my struggle”)
• He was released after about 4 months
• Set about legally taking over government
Use adverbs and adjective to describe Hitler’s speech style

Hitler becomes dictator
• Hitler’s political group, the Nazis won more seats in Reichstag than any other group
• He was able to demand being appointed Prime Minister (Chancellor)
• Once in power, he eliminated all other political opposition
• He then set out to “fix” Germany• He did• He was able to accomplish all his three goals
– Economy stabilized and prospered– Anyone who wanted a job, got a job– Germany built military and prestige
• Within five years, German became strongest European nation

Sudetenland

• Why did Hitler want to annex it?

Appeasement • Britain was desperate to avoid another Great War – would do
anything to avoid– Why?
• The prime minister, Chamberlain met with Hitler – worked out a deal
• Hitler promised all he wanted was land that had mostly Germans
• Chamberlain agreed to let him freely take Sudetenland • Chamberlain returned home, saying “we have peace with
honor… peace in our time”• 6 months later, Hitler marched into Czechoslovakia and
annexed the whole nation• Britain finally promised to defend
Poland – the last straw• Britain and France agreed that if Poland was
threatened or taken by Germany, they’d declare war
• 6 months later, Germany invaded Poland
• Britain and France declared war, and dug in
– Moved into Belgium
– Prepared for trench warfare
– Germany had other plans
Blitzkrieg• New style of fighting
• Explosion of attack– Tanks
– Planes
– Artillery
– Fast and hard push deep into enemy lines
• Poland surrendered in one month
• Netherlands and Belgium defeated even faster
• British army trapped – full evacuation at Dunkirk(350,000 men)
• France defeated two weeks later
Battle of Britain• Hitler expected Britain to surrender
• New Prime Minister, Churchill refused
• Gave inspiring speeches: “WE WILL NEVER SURRENDER!”
• German Luftwaffe (air force) bombed Britain day and night to force a surrender – Churchill REFUSED
• Britain prevailed
– Royal Air Force
– Ben Affleck flew for them
– Invention of Radar
