Sermon Discussion Questions

We encourage you to use these for personal study or for small group conversations around the sermon text. You can meet over the phone or online with one or two other people to go through these questions and to pray together.

1. Have one person in your group slowly read Mark 14:1-11 out loud twice. Imagine the scene as you hear it read. What stands out to you the most in this story?

2. Take a look at how each person in this story relates to Jesus (chief priests and teachers, the woman with the alabaster jar, the other dinner guests, and Judas). What do you think motivates each of them to act or react in the way that they do?

3. What is the significance of the woman’s gift? What does it tell us about her? What does it show about Jesus?

4. Pastor Bob points out that the woman was not trying to be ‘theological’ in giving her gift, but was expressing herself from the heart. What might prevent us from responding on a heart-level to Jesus?

5. Have you known people who have loved in extravagant ways? What did this look like?

6. Can you think of a time in your life when you, like this woman, responded on a heart-level to Jesus? What was it that caused you to respond to him in this way? Share if you would like to.
