Overview and Purpose The First Year Experience (FYE) program at City College is designed to help first year students successfully persist into their second year of college and beyond. The program aims to motivate students to actively participate in their education through structured choice and guided assistance.

The 2015 First Year Student Challenges and Needs survey is the second administration of installment of the expanded 2014 survey. The purpose of the survey is to better understand the challenges to student success that Fall 2014 FYE participants faced and to evaluate new students’ sense of belonging at City College.

Methodology Survey Population

The target population for the 2015 FYE Student Survey consisted of students from the Fall 2014 FYE cohort who were enrolled as of the add/drop date.

Implementation The 2015 Survey was administered online. An email invitation with a link to the online survey was sent to students in May 2014. In an effort to increase survey response rates, three reminder emails with direct access to the survey were sent to the survey population during the three weeks of data collection.

Instrumentation and Analytical Plan The 2014 First Year Challenges and Needs Survey was administered for a second time in Spring 2015. The survey instrument contained 45 Likert-scale questions and two open-ended questions.

Results from the survey were aggregated for each question. A complete item analysis is available in Appendix C and responses to the open-ended question are provided in Appendix A.

How have the student support services offered at City College positively contributed to your first year experience?

1. By being there when I need them to be, and in a very respectful manner. 2. By giving me their advices and help whenever I need to. 3. By introducing clubs, programs, and services made available to help acclimate me through my

first year of college level learning. 4. counseling really helped me out especially because I did not have an idea of what to study or

begin to do with my life until I took Personal Growth. 5. did not do anything. 6. First year experience has made it easier for me to feel conftrable and help like a matter . 7. For me it would mainly have to be peer mentoring. Whenever I had a question, even if it was

simple, I would seek for help I wouldn't get looked at weird or anything. The staff always treated me with respect and was understanding and helpful.

8. gave me advice about my books and shortcuts around campus 9. good 10. Great! So much that I wished they continued to provide us with services. 11. Helped alot 12. I am well aware of the courses to be taken to fulfill my general education and prep major. I had a

peer mentor or someone to talk to as a friend while building relationships. 13. I have great support with the student support services. I am also a participant in Umoja program

which is a great support system for first year student. I benefit a lot from the program; over all, I have a great experience of my first year at City College.

14. I was out of school for over 10 years ant it brought me Right Back On Page and more. 15. It has been very helpful to getting me to getting to the right path. 16. It has made me confident to ask for help. City is full of people who want you to succeed. I have

learned a lot that has greatly contributed to a successful first year and many more to come. 17. Made it possible for me to continue my next years in college. 18. Makes it harder 19. Mentoring 20. N/A 21. Positivly 22. Programs like MESA need more recognition and investment. 23. The have allowed me to be successful in college and allowed me to get closer to achieving my

goals. 24. The services have been good help towards my academics. Support was always offered. 25. The services have maintained me on track, especially when talking to my peer mentor, she was

always motivating me to become better. My counselor was also a very great help to me, he is very dedicated to help students and passionate about what he does.

26. The student support services offered at City College have positively contributed to my first year expierrience because whenever I had a question about campus life they would do their best to answer it and guide me through it especially my peer mentor.

27. There is help to almost any problem I could have and I know where to go for help. 28. they have been very helpful whenever I was confused 29. They have given me an extra support system. 30. They have guided me to becoming successful throughout my first year as will as given me advice

to take the best un bias descions i could take. 31. They have helped me in many ways in either getting my work done on time and having me stay

positive. Always helping me out in any situation. 32. They have helped me with my studies! 33. They haven't. Just held me back a bit more , worried me a bit more.

34. They help us out how to mange time and stress during our classes. 35. They were kind 36. they were there to help you when ever you needed it. 37. **** and **** have been wonderful - supportive, informative, and kind. 38. Wonderfully comforting and encouraging for someone who had many fears about college

What improvements would you recommend to student support services offered at City College?

1. better E-Mailing system 2. Better staff. 3. Better student representation regarding STEM majors. 4. Better understanding of individuals particular needs in order to eliminate some nonsense FYE

requirements 5. Don't put so much stress on students . There should be requirements to stay in the student support

services but not so much pressure . You should drop a student if they don't have time to go to a workshop or event, they have other responsibilities also, not just FYE.

6. FYE requirements such as 2 workshops and events per semester really take up a lot of time that I do not have. I have struggled this semester particularly to keep up with that. I only joined this program for the promised priority registration but we were not informed that we are technically 4th rank which is one up from everyone else and every semester I have had to dramatically alter my schedules. I work full time and study part time. I mean, its not a big deal but I think we should have been informed of this since day one. I wouldnt have joined FYE if I had known this. But thank you anyway, I appreciate the effort your program makes to guide students who don't know what they want to pursue in life. For the ones who do know what they have in mind, I think they will be fine without FYE.

7. good 8. Have more workshop that help student know the different type of help that city offers 9. I believe everything was great. If there was a need to improve in something I would say nothing

except go easy on events and workshops. Overall it was a great experience and a lot of help. 10. i do not know where to begin. 11. I don't think there is anything more to improve. City College has all the resources its students

need to succeed: great professor, computer lab, Math Center and its tutors, English center and its tutors, the resources are there. Students need to use them and take advantage.

12. I have encountered several times where financial aid employees have been very disrespectful to me and other students, I have also seen negative facial expressions that they make to students.

13. I think maybe more workshops at a variety of time could help more. 14. I wish my peer mentoring time would have been better well spent. I didn't have questions to ask

on the spot so there wasn't much to talk about. 15. I would recommend for more engagement toward students and there academic life. I would also

like to see more support toward unfair treatment toward professors and the student. 16. Keep them paid well and keep it going! 17. Letting students be more involved with the campus (outside of class time) on there own and not

in a forceful way. 18. Make sure your shit is together before starting school 19. Maybe be more interactive with the first year students. 20. More faculty would be awesome. 21. More involvement from staff 22. More student communication regarding their college and academic goals. 23. More student support services! 24. N/A 25. No need to improve

26. None 27. none 28. none i like the school the way it is 29. None. 30. Offer more events in downtown. 31. Overall, I feel like they pretty much covered everything I need to know. 32. Peer mentors should be more friendly instead of platonic relationships between students 33. Personally, I never really had a problem so I would just encourage to keep up the good work! 34. Promote student clubs before students select classes. 35. The options for on campus or campus related student activities I feel are limited and could be

improved. 36. The suggestion I would recommend the student support services offered at city is that they should

also hand out the athletics calendar so students can als enjoy the athletic events and show their support to the athletes.

37. There ok
