For one in eight women in the United States, developing breast cancer is a harsh reality. It’s likely that you know someone who has had to deal with breast cancer at some point in her life. Lesa Taylor was one such person.

Taylor, a wife and mother of three sons, courageously battled breast cancer for two years, and passed away in 2014 from the disease. In her memory, her husband, Jamie Taylor, and the Lexington Cancer Foundation provided a gift of $30,000 to the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation. Traditional Bank and Stephen and Lisa Gray also contributed in Lesa Taylor’s memory. This gift was used toward the expansion of the KentuckyOne Health Cancer Center at Saint Joseph East, part of KentuckyOne Health.

The funds will enhance the center’s services, support and outreach through:

• General renovation

• New Equipment for the pharmacy and infusion suites

• Completion of a chemotherapy room

To recognize the Taylor family’s bravery and generosity in the fight against breast cancer, a room in the new Cancer Center will have two very important features—her framed pink boxing gloves and a name that honors the memory of Lesa Taylor.

Grateful for Susan G. Komen Kentucky GrantsIn Fiscal Year 2017, we were grateful recipients of Susan G. Komen Kentucky Grants in this region.

The Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation received $48,000 and the Saint Joseph Berea Foundation received $7,500 to continue and improve the Yes, Mamm! program in their areas.

The ultimate goal of the Yes, Mamm! program is to provide mammography screenings and diagnostic services to individuals in Central and Eastern Kentucky who are low-income, medically-underserved men and women who fall through the cracks of services currently available.

Since the program’s inception, we have provided hundreds of mammography screenings.

Thank you to Susan G. Komen Kentucky for your continued support!

BUILDING HOPE IN LEXINGTON

In 2013, Frenchburg resident Justin Wells, then 32, became a father. When his first son Jude was born, Wells promised his newborn that he would become a healthier person by shedding half of the 360 pounds that made him miserable. Unfortunately, for six months Wells couldn’t break his eating habits enough to fulfill his promise to Jude. It took a car accident to make the new father realize his extra weight was still holding him back.

“After my wreck, I couldn’t help but think the only thing I would have left my son if I were to die was a broken promise,” Wells said. “I realized then that something had to be done.”

In 2014, Wells entered the Beachbody Challenge™ and in just two years he was able to keep his promise by losing 164 pounds. An added bonus: His transformation won him more than $100,000. He donated some of his winnings to the Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Foundation.

Wells works as a project coordinator at Saint Joseph Mount Sterling and for the Safe School Ambassadors program to help battle against bullying.

Every day, nurses save lives. It occurs so regularly that many people seldom take the time to truly think about it — that is, until something drastic happens.

Against hospital policy, a patient at Saint Joseph Mount Sterling fell asleep with a lit cigarette still in hand, and it wasn’t long before the bed linens and the trash can contents were ablaze.

When the nurses on duty saw smoke coming out of the patient’s room, wafting into the hall along the ceiling, the nurses reacted quickly by pulling the fire alarm and sprinting to the patient’s room.

“Our nurses who responded the night of the fire ran toward danger to save the lives of everyone in the hospital,” said Cinda Fluke, MEd, RN, chief nursing officer for Saint Joseph Mount Sterling, part of KentuckyOne Health. “They drew from past experiences, recalled fire drills, and used critical thinking skills to get everyone to a safe place and extinguish the fire.”

In honor of the nurses’ bravery, they’ve been awarded the hospital’s first DAISY Team Award, funded through the Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Foundation. The DAISY Team Award is utilized by 2,700 health care facilities across the country to honor a team of nurses for going above and beyond in their efforts to care for patients and each other.

It’s amazing how much difference a renovation like

this can make,” Cooper said. “Visitors and patients

are amazed the moment they step off the elevator.

Our office is a warm, inviting environment for

care. We’re thankful for the gift that made it possible.”

As chief nursing officer and vice president of patient care services at Saint Joseph Hospital, Dwyer has devoted her time, energy and heart to serving the hospital, patients and staff. Dwyer’s service to the hospital and community, however, extends beyond clinical improvements.

Dwyer has played an integral role in leading various philanthropy projects through the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation, including designing the DAISY Wall to honor nurses. These nurses have been recognized by their peers as well as their patients for exemplary bedside care.

She was also a key player in creating a new green space for the hospital. In early July 2016, the Giving Garden was opened, unveiling a lower-level courtyard teeming with beautiful foliage that will serve as a respite for patients, visitors and staff alike. The Giving Garden project, a revitalization of a long-neglected lawn space, was spearheaded by Dwyer as well as Saint Joseph Hospital president Bruce Tassin and Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation Board of Directors chair Stephen Hillenmeyer.

The Giving Garden features a charming walking path and several seating areas, along with a vibrant blend of flowers and trees that bloom year-round. A small stone fountain adds a peaceful sound to the air for those finding respite on natural boulder benches.

“The Giving Garden was named in a meaningful way to remind caregivers that we are in a sacred space,” Dwyer said. “Each one of us is privileged to serve the patients of Saint Joseph Hospital and are ‘gifted’ to extend wellness, healing and hope to all. In return, the giving comes back to us threefold.”

Dwyer retired in 2017, but she’s leaving her mark before she goes. In April 2017, Dwyer and Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation supporters gathered with nursing and community leaders, physicians and board members for an afternoon garden party in the Giving Garden. Attendees celebrated the ongoing philanthropic developments of the wonderful giving profession of nursing.

LEADERS LIGHT THE WAY

To provide excellent care, it helps for providers to work in a space designed specifically for the needs of their patients. When it became clear that the outdated layout and atmosphere of KentuckyOne Health Primary Care Associates, formerly known as Berea Family Medicine, was no longer meeting that standard, the Saint Joseph Berea Foundation stepped in to help.

“After hearing our plans for improving the space to better serve our patients and improve efficiency, the Foundation presented us with a gift of $380,000 that made the project possible,” said Nikki L. Cooper, practice manager at KentuckyOne Health Primary Care Associates.

Thanks to the support of generous donors and fundraisers working through the Foundation, KentuckyOne Health Primary Care Associates now has a more efficient layout and more room for patients, as well as new hardwood floors, furniture and lighting, and artwork by local artists and photographers.

Hospitals can be a stressful environment for patients who are undergoing treatment or awaiting test results, as well as the visitors, physicians and staff members working diligently to provide the best of care. The new Continuous Ambient Relaxation Environment (C.A.R.E.) Channel at Saint Joseph Hospital is a resource to help decrease stress and optimize patient recovery times.

The channel was made possible by a gift from the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels to the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation.

“The C.A.R.E. Channel is available on every television in Saint Joseph Hospital,” said Lynnette RauvolaBouta, vice president of mission integration with Saint Joseph Hospital. “The channel always plays nature scenery videos and calm instrumental music, which have been shown to have a positive impact on anxiety and pain.”

The C.A.R.E. Channel began broadcasting in May and is one of the ways Saint Joseph Hospital strives to provide a more healing environment for patients and hospital team members.

When parents-to-be learn that they are going to welcome a new baby into the world, it’s a time of great joy, one filled with hope and love. But the news that the pregnancy will not come to fruition is devastating, no matter how early in the pregnancy the loss occurs.

To help families through their grief, Debbie Gibbons, bereavement coordinator with Saint Joseph East, part of KentuckyOne Health, collaborated with Chaplain Kathy Mattone to establish a bimonthly prayer and memorial service and burial ceremony. The services, which are sponsored by the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation and the Catholic Diocese of Lexington, began in February 2015. They are held on the first Wednesday of odd numbered months at 1 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery.

“These services are offered free of charge and open to families of all faiths in our community,” said Lynnette RauvolaBouta, vice president of mission integration with Saint Joseph East, Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph Jessamine, all part of KentuckyOne Health. “The grief of miscarriage is very real. This service is a powerful way to identify and honor that loss.”

A HEALING SERVICEFOR UNBORN BABIES

Earning a reputation for exceptional care, quality and dedication to the community isn’t a simple task. It requires a past that you can be proud of.

Today, Saint Joseph Mount Sterling provides thousands of people in Montgomery, Bath, Powell, Menifee and surrounding counties with exceptional care – an impressive feat that didn’t happen overnight.

In 1918, three area residents saw a need for a hospital in the Mount Sterling community. They purchased a home for $6,440 and renovated the space to create a hospital. One of the donors, Alex Chiles, was given the honor of naming the hospital. He chose the name Mary Chiles Hospital to honor his late mother.

During the hospital’s first year of operation, it served 183 patients and 82 surgeries were performed. Mary Chiles Hospital continued to grow its patient base, and in 1957, the hospital moved to a new, larger facility build on land donated by two local women, Mrs. Robert Winn and Mrs. Bridges White.

Mary Chiles Hospital became Saint Joseph Mount Sterling on August 1, 2007. The hospital relocated to a new $60 million, 114,000-square- foot facility in 2011.

While the hospital’s name has changed, Mary Chiles and her son’s generosity are not forgotten. To help ensure this, a monument honoring Mary Chiles was placed at the entrance of the hospital.

A public dedication of the Mary Chiles monument was held on January 26, 2017. Now, everyone who begins their journey with the hospital can be reminded of how the hospital’s journey began.

When people plan for their personal and financial futures, giving isn’t always top of mind. However, it is one of the best ways for people to leave a lasting legacy to an organization that holds special importance to them.

Planned giving is a type of donation that people leave to the charities or organizations of their choice that typically goes into effect after their death. For example, donors may include an organization in their will or designate an organization as a beneficiary or part beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement account.

Many people put off estate planning or think planned giving isn’t an option because they have children, a spouse, or other family members they would like to support after their death.

“The stereotype is that planned giving is something people need to think about when they’re old, but really, no time is too soon,” said Charles Hoffman, attorney-at- law and former chair, Saint Joseph Berea Foundation. “Planned giving is a crucial, profound way to benefit the community. The core of Saint Joseph Berea Foundation’s assets has come from planned gifts. With those gifts, we have been able to purchase digital mammography machines and fund the creation of the KentuckyOne Health, Heart and Vascular Center, Alfred M. Wood Building.”

Even if the amount you plan to leave to an organization seems insignificant, there is no gift too small. You can choose how your gift will be used or simply ask that your gift be applied to the area of greatest need.

Impact by Numbers

Impact is measured in many ways – in the lives that are saved, in the dreams that come true, and in the awareness we bring to our communities. We celebrate the lives that are impacted daily, whether it’s providing free mammogram screenings or making education dreams come true for our employees.
