    MESSAGE

    This refers to the content whether verbal[written or spoken] or nonverbal [gestures,movements].

    Channel

    This refers to the means through whichmessages are transmitted.

    The channel answers the question of:how will my audience get the message I

    wish to send?

    EXAMPLES: post office, notice board,internet, telephone.

    MEDIUM

    This refers to the message and the form ittakes.

    EXAMPLES: letter, email, publicannouncement.

    RECEIVER

    This refers to the ultimate goal ordestination of a message.

    The receiver decodes and interprets andtranslates the message.

    This refers to the response whethernegative or positive given by the receiver

    Feedback can be voluntary or involuntary

    CONCEPTUALIZATION

    This refers to the initial stage of the messagefrom the minute the sender/ source thinks of

    transmitting a message

    ENCODING

    This involves codifying the message orputting the message in a form that can beunderstood by the intended audience.

    The purpose of the communicationdetermines how the message is encoded

    The audience also will determine how themessage is encoded.

    SELECTION OF CHANNEL

    Once the message has been encoded and themedium has been chosen, the sender has toselect a channel through which that message

    will be conveyed to the receiver [audience].

    The selection of channel depends on:

    the nature of the message [private or public]

    the size of the audience

    Whether or not feedback is required instantly

    Once the context of the situation has beenestablished then a decision must be made onthe type of channel selected to send the

    message.

    DECODING

    The receiver is the decoder.

    The receiver uses past experiences, thelanguage, perceptions, opinions, and otherclues to decipher the message which hasbeen transmitted by the sender.

    INTERPRETATION

    This again is an action done by thereceiver.

    The receiver after decoding the message,

    must interpret either to respond or storethe message for future use.

    It is at this stage that the receiver

    determines whether or not he understandsthe transmitted message and when thenext stage occurs.

    FEEDBACK

    When the receiver decodes and interpretsthe message some feedback/response isgiven to the sender.

    Feedback can be immediate or delayed,voluntary or involuntary.

    Information conveyed in feedback is just asimportant as the original message since it is thisfeedback which determines whether or not

    further communication will take place.

    BARRIERS

    Noise is anything that detracts from themessage sent and prevents effectivecommunication.

    In terms of the sender, noise may refer tothe senders attitudes, prejudices, frameof reference and language used.

    In terms of channel, noise may be literalas in traffic noise or static but it may alsobe a persons speech impediment or lackof clarity in writing or speaking.

    Anything that affects the understanding ofthe message is known as a barrier.

    FACILITATORS

    Facilitators in the communication processrefer to those things that aid the passingof information and therefore facilitate amutual understanding.
