FIVE LEADERSHIP LESSONS FOR THE STUDENTS OF 21ST CENTURY
Leadership can be learned and must be acquired through sustained practice. We wish that we
have more and more leaders. Truly, today’s crisis is due to leadership vacuum.
1. Create an environment of precaution and initiative: - leaders grow when there is an
environment of precaution and initiative. This environment is just opposite of the functioning
typical government department. I don’t want to criticize any government department, but the fact
remains the most outstanding talent of the country wishes to join the government department,
which gives them no freedom (at least in the initial five years or so) which curtails their
enterprising spirit. The death of entrepreneur within the creative youth is the case of nationalmournment for me. As the leaders of tomorrow, you should shun those organizations which
refrain from giving you space for your creativity and ventures.

2. Create a team, where everyone can become a leader: - In the story of Ramayana, we find that
Ram could have defeated Ravana on his own, but he created a team of Vanar Sena and enabled
others to excel. He created Hanuman into a great leader and savior. The real leader was Ram, but
he enabled Hanuman to emerge as leader. This is true leadership. We have to search for thepossibilities for creating powerful leaders from our team. We have to cherry-pick energetic,
passionate and enthusiastic persons in our team. We have to inculcate values of integrity, honesty,
transparency and trust in the team members through constant endeavors.

3. Live simple and share HIGH DREAMS: - Great leaders like Gandhi ji lived life like others.
They are not different in their dress or in their outer presentations. But they are truly different intheir ideas. Create vision and share your vision, which should be compelling, motivating,
moderately ambitious (but achievable) and inspiring for everyone. If you are able to create an
inspiring group, you will succeed.
4. Practice quality: -quality means do what you commit, commit what you can deliver and
follow your commitment. Quality means integrity and honesty. Leaders have to start quality
management. Quality starts from top. If the persons at the top are not committed to quality, it
cannot be achieved.
5. Communicate openly with your team members: -Great leaders are great communicators.
Communication doesn’t mean speaking. Communication means creating a common
understanding and re-in forcing this common understanding regularly. Communication is themost important tool for developing an organization.
