Mind you I do love all the seasons and curling up in front of the fire on a winter’s even-ing is pretty good too. Where were you born and brought up? I was born in Solihull and, after leaving school, spent time travelling in South Africa prior to attending St. Mary’s University, Twickenham to study Theology. How did you discover the curative benefits of yoga? I first stumbled, by accident, into a yoga class at the age of 18. I had in-tended to go to a fitness class but found myself in a yoga class instead which I thoroughly enjoyed and went back for more and more over the years trying out different teachers and traditions of yoga. The benefits of yoga slowly crept up on me. Through personal sadness and searching, yoga helped me spiritually, whilst on a physical level I no-ticed a huge difference, for example, an old horse riding back injury disap-peared. I found that amongst my friends, I was the only one who was practicing yoga. Chatting to them about it sparked up their interest so I began to try and impart what I had learnt and when I realized how much I enjoyed this I decided to enroll on the British Wheel of Yoga three year in-depth teacher training course. Moving to Gloucestershire

At the time of qualification I was teaching in Oxford and then nine years ago, after having two children, I moved with my young family to Painswick where I have been living and teaching ever since. I have since deepened my learning, studying courses in yoga and Ayurvedic medicine, Meditation techniques and most recently yoga for healthy backs with Alison Trewhela.

25Lower back pain effects 80% of the UK population and accounts for about 4.9 million working days lost every year. Trials unit at the University of York has found that Yoga is more effective at relieving lower back pain than conventional treatment. The greatest improvements were evident after just 3 months and those who continued the treatment progressively enjoyed less pain. The Classes The Yoga programme that my classes provide is designed for complete beginners and I have re-ceived special training to enable me to conduct these classes. I have now been practicing yoga and meditation for 24 years, the last 12 of which has been teaching, sharing the reading, practice and knowledge accumulated over many years through the sheer love of the subject. The classes vary from general group classes to one to one classes and “Yoga for a Healthy Back”. These are taught in Painswick, Sheep-scombe, and Stroud or in your own space at home. A weekly newsletter is sent to all students regarding will be taught or focusing on in class that particular week. And when you are not working? Outside of work, I love spending her time with my partner Tom, children and step children. I also enjoy being with our animals, and also walking and painting in the wonderful county of Gloucestershire. Any plans for the future I would like to introduce Yoga, meditation and mindfulness to a wider audi-ence, working with more people to help them with their back care through “Yoga for Healthy Backs” National initiative. Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t.

In fact the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds.

Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now.

Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. They are also easy-to-grow so are brilliant for beginner gardeners.

For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet.

Good flowers for the annual-novice include poppy, calendula, larkspur, fried- egg plants (limnanthes), love-in-the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers.

If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottage garden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded.

The king of the hardy annuals has to be the sunflower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly, plant two seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties. A favourite of mine is Prado Red, which as

the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant.

If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals then sweet peas are surely the fragrant queens. Old-fashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms so he obviously knew a thing or two about it.

Next time you’re at the garden centre...walk past the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot ..and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year.

A celebration of fine art and exceptional care Fine art and high quality care came together today at the unveiling of a superb sculpture by the celebrated local artist, Anthony Slessor at the new Thirlestaine Park Care Home in the historic spa town of Cheltenham.

Splendid, Silent Sun’, Anthony’s newest four metre high bronze sculpture, was unveiled today by the artist himself along with John Storey, Managing Director of Porthaven, the compa-ny that built and operates the new care home. The sculpture is now the centrepiece of the gardens of Thirlestaine Park and is intended to stimulate debate and engage people, to inspire oth-ers, and to challenge some of the misconceptions that surround care homes.

Care homes in the Porthaven Group not only provide exception-al care and nursing, they also deliver beautifully designed sur-roundings that lift the spirits but also feel like home. Since its opening in Autumn 2014, the care home has enjoyed

high demand from families in the area that are looking for a new care option. A Peek into the Past On March 3rd 2005 US millionaire Steve Fossett became the first person to fly a plane solo, non-stop around the globe without refuelling.

He landed his Virgin GlobalFlyer at 19:50 GMT in Salina, Kansas, United States. He took off on Tuesday 1st March and completed his mission in 67 hours in spite of a fuel shortage.

He could have aborted the trip and landed in Hawaii, but decided to press on because of favourable tail winds.

Mr Fossett notched up more than 100 world records in five different fields of endeavour including being the first man

to fly round the world in a balloon single-handed in 2002.

For this feat he flew across the Atlantic, North Africa, Asia and the Pacific, before returning to the US in just nine, a journey of 42,420km (26,366 miles).

Sadly, on September 3rd 2007 Steve Fossett went missing in his single-engine plane. On September 29th 2008 a hiker found 3 crumpled identification cards in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. Human remains were recovered nearby and on November 3rd they were confirmed as Mr Fossett’s.

So you want to put a spring back in your step but the very thought has you wincing in pain. Sound familiar? Think it is time to put that foot care further up your list of priorities and start looking after those tootsies. But why is that the majority of us tend to forget about

looking after our feet? Is it because they are a little further out of our sight than our hands? Or is it the thought that all they are there for is to help us walk? Let’s see what extra care we can give those feet and keep them healthy and free from injury and ailments. Have you ever noticed your feet can sometimes swell up or feel irritating? This is a sign that not enough blood is being pumped back to your heart. Remember it is a long way from your feet to your heart and if you are sitting or lying down there is not much gravity to help it back up. If you find this is the case lie flat and place your feet at a position higher than your heart to give the blood a helping hand and alleviate the tension and ease swelling. Those who sit at a desk or stand for a long period of time are more prone, so if this is you, make sure you get up and move around at regular intervals to get that blood flowing. We all know that nails look good long and painted but when they are toenails this is not such a good idea. Long toenails can dig into the tender skin on toes as you walk and make them bleed. This is not only uncomfortable but is also how small abrasions can turn into nasty infections. Keep toes nails to a sensible length. The skin on our feet is just as prone to injury and ailments as much as the rest of our body, but can end up being more painful. That is why the right footwear should be a priority, even if it is not ‘the latest fashion’ to help reduce the risk of corns and calluses. The back of the heel is another problem area, and skin can become extremely dry and start to crack which can lead to unwanted infec-tions. Keep those problem areas moisturised and well looked after to keep the risk to a minimum. In the winter feet are wrapped up to keep out the cold which can lead to all sorts to problems, even if it does keep your toes warm and toasty. Feet need to breathe, like the rest of our bodies, and if we go from wearing woolly socks and boats all day to woolly bed socks all night, there is not much room for this to happen. This can cause foot odour and lead to Athlete’s foot. So if you want to put a spring back in your step, treat your feet in the same way as you do your hands and make them a priority.
