One of the most important strengths N-KOM has, apart from its strong parentage, is being strategically located in Qatar, which is the world’s leading exporter of LNG. It is also at the heart of the Arabian Gulf, which is teeming with offshore activities.

Having surpassed 400 marine and offshore projects to date, the shipyard consistently wins new and repeat clients with its track record of safe, quality and timely deliveries.

N-KOM’s stellar safety programme and commitment to provide service excellence has garnered it industry recognition, and the shipyard has been consecutively awarded the ‘Best Shipyard Award’ by Seatrade and Lloyd’s List in 2012/2013 and received the Safety & Security Award from The Maritime Standard in 2014.

Strategic PartnershipsN-KOM signed a contract with M.A.N Diesel & Turbo in January 2014, to collaborate for the ME-GI conversion of a Q-Max LNG carrier that has just been completed at the shipyard.

An agreement was signed with DNV GL in November 2014 to co-operate on fuure LNG and gas-related projects. DNV-GL is a classification society that has advanced R&D on LNG applications, thereby enabling them to value-add to N-KOM’s efforts by providing consultancy and certification services.

Leveraging on the existing partnership with GTT (since 2012) and increasing frequency of membrane-repairs as the global LNG fleet ages, N-KOM has proactively teamed up with GTT to train and certify a group of welders to build up in-house competency. This is in

There was a time when N-KOM was docking small tugboats in its

extensive VLCC-size graving docks. Fast forward five years and the shipyard is bustling with activity, having amassed a diverse client pool and delivered a range of repairs for marine vessels and offshore structures.

N-KOM officially started operations in March 2011. In the same month it docked the nation’s, and its first LNG carrier, Simaisma, from Maran Gas Maritime. There were obvious challenges, it being the shipyard’s first docking, but the team rose above it to deliver the project ahead of schedule and set the tone for future repairs with its CAN DO spirit.

N-KOM’s key achievementsThe shipyard has achieved many significant milestones since operations began in March 2011. Despite operating in a region with several other established shipyards, N-KOM has been able to stay competitive and amassed a pool of loyal, repeat clients from all around the world.

Having industry-renowned parents such as Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat), the world’s largest owner of LNG carriers, and Keppel Offshore & Marine, the leading offshore rig constructor and ship repairer, has helped N-KOM attract many owners to patronise the yard knowing that the safety and quality is of the highest standard.

By leveraging the vast expertise and resources of both Keppel and Nakilat, N-KOM is able to offer a comprehensive range of repair, conversion, maintenance and fabrication services to the marine and offshore and onshore industries.

Joe BrincatABS Regional Vice President, Middle East

“On behalf of ABS I would like to extend our warmest wishes to N-KOM as they celebrate a remarkable five years of service to the marine and offshore industry. N-KOM has and continues to provide a wealth of experi-ence and expertise in the repair, conversion and construction services for marine vessels and offshore structures. ABS is proud to have been working alongside their team over the past five years. We wish you continued suc-cess as you celebrate this important mile-stone, congratulations!

In January this year, N-KOM completed repairs on its 100th LNG carrier. The sheer volume of such repairs delivered in a safe, quality and timely manner to clients, by a five year old shipyard no less, is testament to N-KOM’s prowess when it comes to undertaking repairs for these specialised vessels. Capitalizing on expertise in this area, the aim is to position N-KOM as the centre of excellence for gas solutions.

In addition to having top notch facilities that includes two cryogenic cleanrooms, N-KOM has successfully completed the first ME-GI (Main Engine Gas Injection) conversion of a Q-Max LNG carrier to run on LNG fuel. This project is another milestone in Qatar’s standing as a reliable provider of clean energy in a safe and environmentally-sensitive manner, and offers further evidence of Qatar’s proactive approach to the sustainable development of the country’s marine industry. So far, the use of LNG as a bunker fuel source in the LNG shipping industry has been applied to conventional steam driven LNG carriers, and more recently to Dual or Tri-Fuel Diesel Electric LNG ships with low pressure injected, medium speed four-stroke diesels.

The use of ME-GI as an alternative will allow a cleaner fuel technology with a significant reduction in

anticipation of handling higher volumes of such complex and specialised repairs. The GTT training has already been completed as of January 2015.

N-KOM has signed an MoU with Wärtsilä to enhance services available in the shipyard, such as main engine cylinder cover reconditioning and piston crown chrome plating. Wärtsilä’s experience significantly expands the variety of marine services available to clients who choose to dock their vessels at the shipyard. It is a strategic link-up, since more gas carriers are powered by Wärtsilä engines and having them as resident sub-contractors at N-KOM would enable more efficient service provision, namely in the areas of vessel propulsion services, supply of spare parts and inert gas (N

    2) system

servicing. It can also supply parts for ongoing oil and gas-related projects at the shipyard.

Gas & Green Shipping SolutionsOne of N-KOM’s main focus is to establish itself as a centre of excellence for sustainable solutions. It is ideally suited, with its proven track record of handling gas carrier repairs and substantial investment in diversifying its service offering to accommodate the demands associated with the green shipping trend, in response to new IMO emission regulations.

Maran Gas Maritime Andreas Spertos , Technical Director

“N-KOM has made an amazing achievement over the past five years having established itself within this relatively short time as one of the major and reputable ship repair yards with emphasis on specialized ves-sels and projects. Five years ago we trusted N-KOM with the drydocking of our vessel, Simaisma, which was the first docking and repair of an LNG Carrier for N-KOM. Since then we have made numerous successful drydockings and repairs with them. We wish N-KOM continued success and remarkable achievements for the years to come.

”DNV GL Frederick Leo Ebers , Maritime Vice President & Regional Manager Middle East & India

“N-KOM’s growth and achievements in the past 5 years has been very impressive. These were made possible with great caliber leader-ship within the management team, and hav-ing a highly motivated and skilled workforce. DNV GL is very proud to be associated with N-KOM through our partnership in the Gas Value Chain. We will support N-KOM by col-laborating on customer events and projects, as it continue to invest on the infrastructure and competence of the employees. We wish N-KOM success in the future.

measures, such as the installation of scrubber systems and other LNG and marine technology upgrades, refits and modifications.

Destination for Gas Carrier RepairsGas carrier repairs account for almost 30% of the marine repair business at N-KOM. In addition to servicing Nakilat’s sizeable fleet of 61 LNG carriers, N-KOM also undertakes a significant number of LNG and LPG carriers from the likes of Maran Gas Maritime, BW Gas, MOL, NYK, “K”-Line, Teekay, Fareast Shipmanagement, Anglo-Eastern Shipmanagement, Consolidate Marine Management, Pronav and Golar Wilhelmsen.

Having a dedicated repair team for gas carriers, the yard has successfully carried out concurrent dockings of up to seven LNG carriers at once on several occasions. The shipyard is well-experienced at handling all types of repairs for gas carriers, commonly involving modifications to the vessel’s ballast water system, re-liquefaction plant, Boil Off Gas (BOG) system, silencer refits, hull

environmental emissions. Cleaner burning engines have the potential to increase the mean time between maintenance, provide flexibility of fuel supply to react to market changes, and reduce bunkering activities, which in turn will offer operations and marine risk reduction.

N-KOM has also signed an agreement with HeLeNGi Engineering from Greece to retrofit several commercial Greek ferries to run on LNG as fuel as part of the EU’s Poseidon Med project. The Poseidon Med project is the first LNG bunkering project in the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea, and is led and coordinated by Q-ENERGY Europe. It is the first Cross European Border project which aims to introduce LNG as the main fuel for the world shipping industry and develop a sufficient bunkering network.

Working together with Keppel Offshore & Marine Technology Centre (KOMtech), N-KOM is also involved in several notable technology developments and implementations to enhance its standing at the forefront of providing green shipping solutions. These include emission control

ODFJELL Ashok Nair, Senior Technical Superintendent

“It was a pleasant surprise doing a docking in N-KOM for the first time. The safety aware-ness and efficiency of the yard repair team was very good – last minute additional jobs were handled without any delays. The ship repair manager and estimator followed up on all jobs very professionally so the invoice settlement could be done in a pleasant and professional manner. Last but not least the hospitality and facilities in the yard has left a lasting impression on the Odfjell repair team on the site.

business. With world-class workshops and a wide range support services on-site, the shipyard has seen the volume of enquiries and repairs for a variety of tankers increase year by year. The introduction of ‘Ships Spares in Transit’ custom clearance, expedited administrative processes aided by our Business Centre and on-site subcontractors such as MAN Diesel, Wärtsilä , Wilhelmsen and Turbo Technik to name a few, has greatly enhanced the shipyard’s standing with tanker operators/managers, not to mention its ideal location at the crossroads of busy shipping routes in the Arabian Gulf. Among the shipyard’s rapidly growing international clientele in this sector are Maran Tankers, Dynacom, Odfjell, Euronav, TMS Tankers, Aegean Bunkering, Samos Steamships, Goodwood, Vela International Marine (now Mideast Shipmanagement), V Ships, Diamond Shipping, AET, Thome and Unix Line.

The shipyard has completed a number of Schneekluth and MEWIS duct installations for VLCCs, Suezmaxes, Aframaxes

treatment and coating work as well as equipment overhauls, especially cryogenic ones. Twice now the shipyard has completed highly specialized and complex repairs for GTT MKIII-membrane cargo containment systems. This was recently accomplished for NKY LNG Shipmanagement’s LNG carrier Lusail and back in 2014 for Pronav Shipmanagement’s LNG carrier Milaha Ras Laffan. The repairs were a concerted effort between N-KOM’s project team, cargo tank containment specialists Gabadi S.L. and SGS (Korea), whom were involved in the Secondary Barrier Tightness Test (SBTT), Global and acoustic tests on these vessels. Another key LNG carrier project involved the cropping and renewal of a collision vessel’s damaged side shell. This entailed 180 tonnes of steelwork for the vessel’s deck plating and attached internals, as well as the reconstruction of the vessel’s bulbous bow.

Tanker Repairs on the RiseAn area where N-KOM has witnessed a marked growth in would be its tanker repair

These certifications enable the shipyard to undertake fabrication work for pressure vessels and various offshore modular structures.

The past year has seen N-KOM’s offshore business really take off, with several major contractual wins. N-KOM has expanded its suite of services beyond rig repair, upgrading and maintenance to include offshore newbuilding, modular fabrication (e.g. jackets and topsides), pressure vessel construction and servicing, land rig servicing, in addition to industrial shutdown maintenance.

Over the past year, the yard has delivered several fabrication projects for key local and international clients, including:

    • Fabrication, load-out and sea-fastening of offshore structural steel piles for

and LPG carriers. Known to significantly reduce vibration and fuel consumption of vessels, thereby enhancing their propulsion efficiency and voyage performance, Schneekluth and MEWIS ducts are especially popular with N-KOM’s Greek clients.

Other repairs that have been carried out for tankers at N-KOM include the overhauling of main and auxiliary engines, turbochargers, overhauling of cargo pump systems, electrical and instrumentation works, HFO to MDO bunker system and fuel oil system modifications, steel renewal, cargo tank coating works and the servicing of shaft generator motor systems.

  • Customised for field transit operations in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), the self-propelled and self-elevating CLASS 300 liftboat was designed in collaboration with Bennett Offshore, a naval architecture and marine engineering arm of Keppel Offshore & Marine (KOM). It can operate in water depths of up to 65m and will be equipped with a unique 200 tonnes leg encircling crane, a large open deck space of around 800m2, a helideck, and have an accommodation capacity for 130 people.

A liftboat is a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to traditional offshore service vessels, as it supports a wide range of services such as well servicing, commissioning, maintenance and decommissioning of offshore platforms, and can be mobilised without requiring third party assistance. Apart from accommodating a large number of offshore crew, the liftboat is able to enhance overall operational safety by providing a more stable work environment with its self-elevating feature.

This is N-KOM’s first newbuild project for GDI, having previously completed more than ten jack-up rig repair and conversion projects for the company.

Furthermore, N-KOM has secured a contract worth USD19 million to design and construct a floating jetty for Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC). Under the contract, N-KOM will undertake engineering, procurement, installation and construction (EPIC) of the floating jetty scheduled for completion in June 2015.

It is N-KOM’s stated goal to be the Preferred Shipyard Delivering Solutions.

Forward lookingThe shipyard is also looking to tap into its strategic location at the centre of offshore activities in the Arabian Gulf, and extend its suite of gas solutions to offshore customers.

With more than five hundred offshore rigs and platforms operating in the region, the shipyard is embarking on the design and construction of LNG bunker barges to support the refuelling of these structures.

Similarly, capitalizing on Qatar’s status as the world’s leading exporter of LNG, N-KOM being an ASME and API-certified shipyard is also looking to support the onshore LNG industry through fabrication of ISO tanks for road transportation as well as LNG Type ‘C’ storage tanks up to 30,000cbm.

With the Q-Max floating dock (405m x 66m, Lifting capacity 120,000T) that would be operational come mid-2015, the shipyard’s docking capacity will increase by an additional 50%, hence allowing both the shipyard and its customers flexibility in scheduling dockings.

N-KOM has also developed two other liftboat designs – LB200 and LB400 – for shallow water (45m) and deep water (75m) operations. LB200 features 4 tubular legs, an open deck space of 470 sqm, customized pedestal crane between 20tonnes -100tonnes and accommodation capacity for up to 50men. LB400 on the other hand features 4 lattice legs , a helideck, a leg encircling crane of 300 tonnes and a 75tonnes pedestal crane, 1700 sqm of open deck space and as well as accommodation capacity for up to 300men.

Looking at what the shipyard has accomplished in the last 5 years and its future plans, N-KOM is well on track to achieve its goal of becoming the Preferred Shipyard Delivering Solutions.

Proud to be working with N-KOMEncompass Marine was established in 2000 by Peter Smith and Kevin Jarvis to provide marketing and sales services to the worldwide ship repair industry, enabling clients in the UK, Eire and Switzerland to have quality, cost-effective repairs for their global needs. Options ranging from dockings, conversions, port and voyage repairs to underwater services are provided by Encompass Marine’s worldwide network of strategically located ship yards and marine service companies.

“We have worked very closely with Keppel Shipyard since 2001, which significantly strengthened our positioning in the market, and we now represent the Group’s ship repair and conversion facilities at Arab Heavy Industries, Keppel Batangas, Keppel Subic, Keppel Verolme and N-KOM” explains Peter Smith.

Encompass Marine has been closely involved with raising the market awareness of N-KOM, with key Yard personnel regularly visiting the UK prior to and after the opening in November 2010. “It is a fantastic facility with huge potential and it has been a great experience to work together with the Yard over these initial years. The development of the facilities and team at N-KOM has been truly impressive and, looking forward, their future plans will ensure that the Yard reinforces its well-earned reputation as a centre of excellence, especially for gas carrier repairs. The investment in the floating docks and shiplift system will also broaden the Yard’s appeal to a wider spread of vessel owners” says Jarvis.

“As the UK and Swiss representative for N-KOM, the

    14 SUPPLEMENT

  • technological expertise and capability within the Yard is world class, and we are very excited by the developments in 2015, such as the industry leading ME-GI (Main Engine Gas Injection) conversion project, the Yard’s first new build liftboat delivery, and the commissioning of one of the world’s largest floating docks. This 50% increase in the dock capacity at N-KOM will enable Encompass Marine to offer our clients greater docking options, together with additional services as the support network continues to expand,” states Smith.

Encompass Marine takes great pride in its level of customer service and provides its clients with proactive ‘hands-on’ support at all stages from enquiry to award and onwards through to successful completion. “When the work is carried out by N-KOM, we know that the client will be well served by all of the Departments in the Yard, from the very efficient Customer Services to Production and Commercial. The Yard listens closely to client feedback and the various start-up issues have been overcome with examples such as the quick turnaround for administrative processes as

well as the customs clearance and delivery of spares via the Yard’s “ships spares in transit” procedure, which are all coordinated by the Yard’s Business Center” explains Jarvis.

Technology has changed the way the industry works, as everyone now expects to receive immediate responses to questions and enquiries which increases demands on all parties. However, it is all too easy for business to become impersonal and digitally-based and Encompass Marine strongly believes that the personal touch, whilst also utilizing all available technology to expedite works, is still valued. Effective communication is paramount and it means that the Yard’s Representative plays an ever more crucial role to ensure that all requirements are met and kept up with. However, throughout all of the improvements in communications, the key factor remains the close and open relationships that Encompass Marine has developed with N-KOM and our ship owner/ manager clients.

“I was involved in preparation for the naming ceremony of the shipyard and thereafter attended N-KOM for the dry-docking of various STASCo/Nakilat vessels, more recently the successful dry-docking of the LNG Dukhan, the 100th LNG vessel repaired. I have seen significant improvements over the last 5 years, there is certainly an embedded “Safety Culture” at all levels throughout N-KOM. N-KOM has risen to the technical challenges that each vessel brings during the repair period, through the dedication and professionalism of their staff. I would like to wish them every success for the future whilst they strive to be a World Leading repair facility.
