Health & Safety

We would recommend the use of gloves, dust mask and protective goggles or glasses when mixing

or applying GRP products.

Correct preparation is of critical importance when installing a GRP system. You should not fit GRP onto any bituminous product – if bitumen is present, either strip the roof completely or over-board. Any new deck must be completely dry before commencement of GRP installation.

PreparationRemove old deck right back to joists. Joists and supports must be completely rot-free prior to installation. Consider a tapered firring at this point to create a fall, eliminating pooling of water post-installation.

LayingWe highly recommend the use of 18mm tongue and groove, conditioned, water-resistant OSB/3 Board for creating the deck, though exterior plywood can be used as an alternative.

Lay boards at 90° to the joists, writing side up. Begin laying the boards at the furthest edge from the draining edge. Where a board is laid along a wall, allow a 25mm expansion gap between them. Lay boards end to end, trimming final board to fit, and use off-cut (if larger than 400mm) to begin next row, creating staggered joints. Ensure T&G joints engage correctly.

FixingFix boards to joists with corrosion-resistant ring shank nails or countersunk screws. If using plywood, these will have to be jointed on the joists.

SealingOnce the deck is laid and fixed, it is essential that all joints are taped with 25mm masking tape, sealing the joints from resin penetration. Then over-laminate the masking tape using a Glassfibre Tape Bandage.

Multiple styles of trim are available, depending on the particular roof configuration. Always bond to the side with the matt finish.

Firstly, fix slate battens around the roof perimeter around 25mm below the deck. Apply short beads of trim adhesive to the battens before then affixing trims in place. Ensure trim face is vertical, then mechanically fix trims to batten using 20mm ring shanked nails.

Corners can be achieved using pre-formed corners, or alternatively mitre the trims and over-laminate with a Glassfibre Tape Bandage.

Gutter

1. If it is required that water run-off should drain into a gutter, use a drip edge trim

2 Where water run-off is not required, use a raised edge trim

3. When sealing the roof edge to an abutting wall, use a wall edge fillet trim. Fix to roof with galvanised felt nails. Do not fix to wall. Overlap vertical flange of fillet trim with a simulated lead flashing trim and fix to wall as per traditional lead flashing, then seal into place with cement or mastic

Preparation is critical in ensuring this important stage of the process is carried out correctly. Ensure everything is in place prior to adding catalyst to the resin.

*The thicker the mat, the more resin required – approx. 33% more will be required for 600 vs 450gsm*

1. Ensure the deck is completely clean, dry and free from any tools or debris

2. Cut the matting for detailing work and prepare bandages for sealing trims to deck

3. Roll out and cut Chopped Strand Matting for the whole roof surface, incorporating a 50mm overlap

4. Prepare tools – Application Rollers, Bubble Busters, clean Mixing Bucket

5. Select an area adjacent to ladder for mixing

6. Pour resin into bucket and add catalyst as specified. Mix thoroughly – for at least one minute

7. Apply resin to deck with Application Roller at a ratio of 1kg per m² (450gsm) or 1.2kg per m² (600gsm). Generously wet out at this stage

8. Roll out the Chopped Strand Matting, ensuring no folds or kinks and that the trims overlap correctly

9. Apply more resin at 0.5kg per m² or 0.6kg per m2, depending on weight of matting. Apply resin until matting is translucent, leaving no dry spots.

10. Wait 3-4 minutes while the glass soaks up the resin, then go over the whole area with a Bubble Buster. You must get all the air out of the glass so the fibres disappear and the timber grain beneath is visible

11. It’s important to stipple around the edges, preferably using a brush, ensuring the glass is fully consolidated on trims

12. Leave to cure for the 30-40 minutes

Lamination and Cure

The Fixco® GRP system consists of a complete range of GRP materials designed for roofing applications specially for use by trade professionals. Our formulated solution has been manufactured in the UK specifically for our demanding climate. The resin and top coat can be applied in temperatures between 5 & 30°C and unlike competing products there is a cost saving, by way of not needing to purchase separate summer and winter hardeners. This is because you can simply reduce or increase the amount of hardener you mix with resin/top coat dependant on the ambient temperature (see back page for more details).

Do’s

Apply topcoat as soon as possible after lamination cure

Keep application even

Ensure all installers are aware of the hazardous nature of GRP products and that relevant PPE is used

Topcoat Application

Prior to topcoat application, lightly sand the whole roof surface, corners and details with 60-80 grit discs and then clean with solvent/acetone to aid adhesion of topcoat. Apply the topcoat as soon as possible after the lamination cure is complete.

Application of Topcoat

Don’ts

Never use in wet conditions, temperatures below 5°c or above 30°c

Never put catalysed resin or topcoat back in your van. Keep catalysed containers separate from other materials on site

Do not apply topcoat to flashing trim as these are pre-finished with a UV stable covering

Add the recommended amount of catalyst to the topcoat, stirring for at least a minute. You must always use a clean bucket! Starting furthest away from the exit point, begin application of the topcoat, making sure the topcoat is applied to the entire roof surface. Always use an Application Roller, applying the topcoat with long even strokes, as an even coverage is important at this final stage. The final overall roof appearance will depend on how evenly the topcoat has been applied.

The topcoat will continue to cure over a number of days, though light foot traffic is possible within a few hours.

For a non-slip finish, sprinkle ScanGrit while the topcoat is being applied, sweeping off any excess once the topcoat has cured.
