A bit of history to start with. Liverpool were one of the oldest open clubs in the UK, founded in 1857 I think, before merging with St Helens in 1986 and moving from their old ground in Aigburth to St Helens. They are one of the original clubs on Wilmslow fixture lists and have consistently been a solid skilful team over the years. They have developed a very good mini/ junior section and this has provided the bedrock for the senior sides as, like Wilmslow, they follow the fully amateur ethos in a very mixed league! If anybody remembers my notes from last seasons match (of course you do!) I played several games for Liverpool when I was at University. They were very memorable especially the social do’s with a girls teachers training college halls next door and a wonderful captain called Wilf Murphy. If you think that Murphy played in the front row, you’d be right. He was an archytypal prop! The Liverpool St Helens President, Ray French, also has a link with Wilmslow! He played second row with M R M Evans from Wilmslow in 1960 for North West Counties against South Africa. I hope Ray can visit us today – just to hear his voice, after all the years listening to his commentaries on Rugby League. We have another link, I think, when I played for Kings against extremely tough opponents in Cowley GS when Ray was the coach there. Back to the Wolves, Liverpool St Helens and our league, North West 1. Liverpool have had a much better start to the season than Wilmslow, albeit only one place higher. A draw against Altrincham Kersal due to a penalty by AK in the 9 th minute of extra time denied them a victory, being the only blemish to their seasons start. Other highlights in the league are the continuing struggle of Manchester and, surprisingly perhaps, Sale are not having it as easy as was expected. They only won 29- 25 win against Widnes, who are always a very good organised side, with a very late score. The Wolves started the season well but they let the game slip away at home to Vale of Lune from a good winning position and were poor at Rochdale. I am sure Brendan will have had a hard week with them to get back the edge and cohesion for what will be a hard game today. The Vikings, as expected, have moved up into a very hard league and are struggling against some very good experienced teams. It looks as if Preston GH will dominate this league with Macc 2nds. This is bound to happen with the current messy pro/amateur/shamateur structure, so, it is quite good to see some pragmatism with a conference structure after Christmas with the division split into two conferences, the top fliers fighting it out and the weaker teams having more level games. There are eleven more games before that happens. The Hawks are doing well and should have a good game today against Marple and the Ravens should prevail against Whitchurch, going on last years results. The game of the week was the Senior Colts 8 – 7 win at Preston GH. A shock to Preston, who tried to play classy rugby in dire conditions, whereas Wilmslow played solid, containing rugby. I do recommend to all to go onto the WRUFC website and read the match report by Mark Shotton – it is a literary masterpiece of drama, endeavour, heroics, pathos, humour- all that is missing is romance!! Please read! After Christmas this league splits into two seven club conferences, determined by whether you finish the first half of the season in the top or bottom half of the league.

Saturday 15th. September 2012 North 1 West Rochdale 27 – 10 Wilmslow There was a sense that it wasn’t going to be Wilmslow’s day, when immediately after half time a howler of a dropped pass in the twenty two gifted the initiative back to the home side and just moments later, the Rochdale No. 7, Ross Hartley, cantered in under the posts for his second score of the afternoon. Five minutes later, the Wolves forced a penalty five metres out from the Rochdale line on the right. It was a perfect opportunity to prod the ball into touch for a catch and drive to reduce the deficit to one score. Unfortunately though, hooker Alex Donaldson was taking time out in the sin bin and the stand in thrower had failed twice to find his target so despite being a man short, the Wolves opted for a scrum and unsurprisingly were heaved off it by a full compli-ment of Rochdale forwards and the ball was cleared to half way. After that little was seen of the Wolves as an attacking force. There were some brave sorties out of defence, particu-larly from left winger Sam Cutts and Ben Day swears that he had a perfectly good try disallowed, but everything was from deep and any time a promising g position was built, the Wolves were promptly penalised and forced back. Further evidence of promising attacking positions for the Wplves lost to the whistle comes from the fact that Roch-dale had only three penalty shots at goal all game. In a normal game between two reasonably well matched sides, the penalty count normally ends up more or less even but on this occasion, referee Brown found cause to penalise the Wolves three times more often than the home side. Twenty three times, in fact, once every three and a half minutes. Both sides wanted to play decent rugby, there were no serious or deliberate shenanigans off or on the ball, so why this disparity. If the players were getting frustrated at not being allowed to play and their heads were going down, then I wouldn’t have been surprised. Both sides are amateur, albeit serious amateurs, training hard on two or three night a week, looking forward to their rugby on the Saturday so it’s a shame for them when this sort of thing happens. Wolves coach Brendan Thomas just shrugged his shoulders : ‘I didn’t think the game warranted four yellow cards, he said, two to each side and if it had been managed more empathetically, then both sides would have got more out of it.’ The Wolves were first to score after ten minutes, when they turned over a ruck and moved the ball quickly to the left, where full back Oli McCall fed Ben Day who had come in off the right wing to make the extra man in the centre. Their second score on the quarter hour originated from an attacking lineout, the ball was moved through hands to the right and then back again to the left where Dominic Clancy took the scoring pass. Before half time, Craig Cooper broke out of a tackle before being hauled down just short and Clancy just couldn’t hang on to the ball as he went for the line. But that was about as good as it got for the Wolves. Their downfall came from too many misdirected kicks out of defence when under pressure. Instead of going into space or into touch or putting receivers under man and ball pressure, they went comfortably into the hands of the Rochdale wingers, Jimmy Flitcroft and Richard West, who had all the time in the world to decide on what to do next. Their first try came on the half hour after Flitcroft had run a missed touch kick back at the Wolves leaving space out on the left for West to cross. Ten minutes later, the same West picked up a loose kick and ran it back before chip-ping the defence, collecting his own kick and putting Ross Hartley in for his first try. The simplicity of West’s play belied the skill he had shown on the ball.

There was still everything to play for at half time but Hartley’s second try and a further score from West on around sixty minutes settled the matter. Penned back as much by the referee as by the Rochdale side, the Wolves looked to lose shape, patience and heart. The home side could easily have added a further brace of scores in the closing plays and maybe should have done. Rochdale have developed their Spotland ground into something of a show piece but it hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Wilmslow in recent years. The Wolves now face a challenge to raise their game for the visit of Liverpool St. Helens next weekend. Coach Brendan Thomas and his team have a job on their hands.

Vikings Struggle in the Bateman League

It was always going to be a hard test for the Vikings in the Bateman Premier

League and after three matches both the newly promoted sides, the Vikings and Birkenhead Park Wanderers are at the

foot of the league. It’s been a tough baptism for them.

Last weekend, they were thrashed at

home by Preston GH 82-0, the previous week they went down to Macc Lions by 59 – 18 and in the first game at Burnage

they went down by 48-26.

What is it about Burnage and Wilmslow? Two years ago there was the Lewis

McKay eye gouging incident and now Vikings team manager Bryn Lewis got

clouted by a Burnage player as he tried to separate brawling players on the

touchline.

This week the Vikings have a home fixture against Vale of Lune after which

we should have a better idea of their true worth.

Meanwhile the Developmentals have started well in their new league with

straight wins against Burnage, Winnington Park and Moore.

The 4th. team was unfortunately stripped of players by the 3rds. and had to cry off

their away game at Macc.

What’s This! No Tea! I had no idea that things were that bad at Macc. The Blues have had a poor start to the season lying at the foot of National 1 with three defeats and now news comes that they can no longer put on the traditional post match blotting paper of pie, chips and gravy for visiting teams after their matches unless their players pay £4.80 each. The missive from the Macc committee informing clubs is not clear though whether teams still intending to dine at Macc after their game should reserve their table in advance. Visiting first teams, of course, will continue to be fed but if you’re on any other side there’ll be nothing for you. The Macc committee in their wisdom also said they’d understand if clubs withdrew catering from visiting Macc sides. It’s hard to believe that this penny pinching attack on traditional rugby club hospitality is going to have much positive effect on their balance sheet. Can you just imagine the Wilmslow committee discussing this as an agenda item. ‘There’re three visiting teams this Saturday, says the director of rugby, We’ll need teas for six teams.’ ‘Wait a minute, says the secretary, one of the teams we’re playing is from Macc so they shouldn’t have a tea provided and whilst we’re at it, can we get away with not providing a tea for our players as well? It wouldn’t be right to give them a meal and not their opposition. If we only do four team teas, says the chairman, how do we make sure that only the right teams get them? Should we issue tea tickets and place security guards at the door to the hall to prevent access by unauthorised players? That won’t be necessary, says, the director of rugby, because I know who’ll be on the Macc team; I’ll make sure their showers are cold as well to save a bit of money and just tell them to f*** off back to Macc if they want any food.’ On the other hand our committee might - unlikely though - decide on a more cunning strategy to fill up Macc’s best players with sirloin steaks, free ale and port so that they are impressed with the gastronomy here and attracted to come and play for Wilmslow. Some of you will have noticed an ad on the back page of the Wilmslow Express in which Macc advertise a ticket price of £5 if you’re a member to see the ‘Blues’ and £10 if you’re not. Er! How much is a non playing subscription you might ask if you’ve got your head screwed on the right way. £50, says Paddy Mulchrone, unless you’re over 60, in which case it’s £40, so the true cost to a member of watching a game is just over £7 a game, which isn’t at all bad considering the level that they’re at. It’s just that the ad could be construed as a little misleading. Macc have achieved wonders to have progressed to the fringes of full time professional rugby, never once being relegated since the inception of the leagues, but it will be sad if it has to be at the expense of traditional rugby club values. I know they’re not a full time professional club but is it a case, I wonder, that the closer they edge to that status, the more they find that full time professionalism is a different beast altogether from a community club running five or six sides, a junior section et al. Possibly the two just don’t go together. Will the saga of the withdrawal of tea time pie and chips eventually be seen as a harbinger of more radical changes still to come? Finally, how are former Wilmslow players doing? The Mulchrones have yet to be seen in Rotherham’s colours. Fergus is just getting over an injury, whilst Charlie is fit and keen to play but hasn’t been selected. It’s close to the end of September now and he hasn’t yet had any game time, so I wonder how long that state of affairs will continue. I suppose he could be loaned out - back to Macc! Andy Walker is now the Lions scrum half at Macc and Josh Longmore, no longer at Stockport, appeared on the wing against his former club. On the Blues, Eliot Brierley, back it seems from Rotherham, is appearing at outside centre. Ryan Parkinson was I presume in the side that lost to Ealing but of Matthew King and Chris Jones, I could find no mention earlier this week on the Macc web site. Nor was there any match report on the Ealing match posted by 5.00pm on Monday afternoon.

September Preston GH 7- 8 Wilmslow SC Wilmslow JC 8 - 52 Sandbach Mark Shotton was full of praise for Hoppers, a proper rugby club he called them but a bit arrogant towards what they regard as a junior club. When his senior colts side ran out onto the first team pitch, there was just a touch of apprehension about what might happen, especially after what had happened to our second team the day before. He shouldn’t have worried. On a very wet afternoon, the Wilmslow boys were just that bit more savvy. They kept Hoppers pinned back, especially from Wilf Noden’s little chips ahead which had the Hoppers continually turning and it was from one of these that Rob Shotton got his toe to the ball for a perfect grubber over the line and then won the chase to get sufficient downward pressure to convince the referee he had scored. No wonder his father’s match report was such a eulogy. Hoppers scored a fine try in the second half but it was a calmly taken penalty on 70 minutes from Wilf Noden which won a gritty, competitive game of rugby. But the Wilmslow boys deserved it. Pictures are from the junior colts game against Sandbach. Short handed from the start, they suffered from players leaving injured throughout a game which Sandbach dominated to win deservedly.

Wilmslow 34 - 46 Vale of Lune

A game of two halves : the first half won convincingly by the Wilmslow Wolves 23 -12 and but second half was won more convincingly by the visitors from Vale of Lune 34 -11. The intensity and hard hitting tackles of both teams was shown early as my Vale man of the match Andy Powers produced two crunching tackles on Wilmslow own hard hitting Richard Hughes. After these early exchanges Wilmslow quickly dominated by running devastating patterns of play with Oli McCall slicing through the defence, only for captain Mike Black being held up over the line. The early mistakes of last week were not evident today and all moves were going to hand. From a scrum inside the 22, a clean backs move with a missed pass in the centre set up an easy overlap for man of the match, Ed Armitage to go over in the corner. The first half was not all Wilmslow, from the kick-off Vale of Lune quickly got the ball back. Powers ran hard, strongly handing off Hughes to set up the other Vale influential player, James Hodder, who finished off the move. James Moore, who was accurate all day, converted. Defensively the Wolves were disciplined. Wilmslow turned-over the ball and the lively Oli McCall drove hard, stood up strong in the tackle just inside the Vale 22, which lead to one of many penalties awarded against Vale in the first half for infringements. Wilmslow kicked for a lineout taken by Mike Clifford which led to a flowing combination of driving forwards, punching runs from backs, and a simple backs move for Ben Day to score in the opposite corner. For the next 15 minutes the Wolves always looking threatening with the Vale defence chasing shadows and persistently infringing to reward the Wolves with two penalties duly converted by Armitage. Jonny Barltrop now went close but the last pass went into hands of a desperate Vale defender. The Wolves try of the day was also their final flourish. From a 22 m scrum McCall came into the line at speed, timing an inside pass perfectly to set up Hughes to go under the posts, converted by Armitage. It all seemed to change after the first of two serious injuries to Vale players. The game was stopped for 5 minutes as Tom Ball was tended to and Vale then went on to score 39 points without reply until Jack Harrison scored in the last play of the game.. Again the stand in Vale hooker failed to find his line out jumper but this worked out for Vale. The third destructive tackle by Powers on Hughes lead to Vale scrum deep in Wilmslow half. Again the discipline held up and Wilmslow clearing kick was knocked on by Vale. At the resulting Wolves scrum the fine referee Carl Hall awarded a free kick against Wilmslow for going in early and then marched the Wolves back 10 yards for dissent. Vale capitalised from the position and scored in the corner. From the kick-off in the second half Wilmslow misfortune continued when Craig Cooper had to leave the pitch with a blood injury. The tide though had not quite turned with Vale giving away two early penalties, one for crossing and the other holding on – leading to a further Armitage penalty. Two events seemed to breath life fully into the Vale team, who were staring down a humiliating loss. Firstly their talisman winger James Hodder and late replacement winger Sam Moorby showed their team that Wilmslow could be beaten with a number of mazey run from deep in 22. After receiving the Wilmslow down field kicks Hodder avoided four or five Wilmslow tacklers before passing to influential player took on the ball before passing back to Moorby to finish a stunning move. Perversely the second was the yellow carding of Vale second Row Lee Acton for use of the elbow against catcher Mike Clifford at re-start, after Armitage penalty. With 14 heroes Vale turned around the game. Wilmslow mistakes and a penalty count now running against them now gave Vale the initiative. Only one try from the 34 points can go down to a Wolves mistake. Wilmslow broke up a Vale attack in their five meters. A poor pass put Cooper under pressure and Vale swooped, picking up the ball and going over under the posts. The other points from Vale showed the Wolves what they need to achieve in future weeks. Slick handling between forwards and backs cracked upon the Wolves defence. The Wolves, starved of possession for the whole half, rallied late on with 10 minutes to go and 17 points adrift. Once again two unfortunate incidents cooled the game. Firstly an awkward tackle by late replacement Moorby, on the charging Clifford resulted in a worrying 15 minute stoppage in the game. Sam was rushed to hospital with us all fearing the worst. Luckily, we have been informed, Sam has no serious injury but was concussed: we wish him a speedy recovery and hope he remembers his positive contribution to an exciting game. The second, more cynical, was a yellow card for prop James Hesketh preventing the release of a ball. With a prop off the field Wolves made the mistake of requesting a scrum. It was a passive scrummage. There was a consolation when Harrison scored at the end but it was too little too late. There could be no complaints, the better side won on the day Dave Scanlon

Wilmslow RUFC are delighted to formally announce a two year club sponsorship agreement with Vision Express Wilmslow. In addition to their overall sponsorship which will help the club to continue with its modernisation and development at The Memorial Ground, Vision Express Wilmslow are also supporting Wilmslow’s U17 squad, who are the current holders of the Cheshire Cup at their age group. Ian Parkinson, Director of Vision Express Wilmslow said we are very pleased to be able to support such a broadly based community sports club as Wilmslow RUFC. It’s been a wonderful summer of sport in the country with so many British winners at the Olympics, the paralympics and elsewhere in cycling, tennis and golf. Here at Vision Express Wilmslow we are delighted to play our part in supporting a forward looking local grass roots sports club and who knows, may be helping them to develop the rugby stars of the future. Jon Hitch added that amateur sports clubs are totally reliant on their members to run and organise everything that the club does but it’s only with sponsorship support that we can continue to develop our facilities and to provide all our players, especially the younger and up and coming ones, with the best possible coaching. It really is great to have Vision Express, a leading national brand, behind us. We are very grateful to them’ Our photograph shows (l to r): Back Left : Jon Hitch, President of WRUFC Second Left : Mark Levi, Director, Vision Express Wilmslow Players : Will Morgan, Seb Pemberton, Rory Hill, Harrison Peck, Rhodri Lewis, George Dean, Sam Lawton, Kassim Basson, Jake Fellows, Jez Sumner, Harry Ellis, Harry Thomson, Aiden Westaway, George Corner, Dan Wilkins, Elliot Cooke, Rafe Cotton Far right : Ian Parkinson, Director, Vision Express Wilmslow

break. With a 22 point lead Leigh continued to press and Wilkinson took advantage of a lucky bounce to race to the posts from half-way. As Leigh now appeared to take their foot off the throttle, Fleetwood got into the game for the last quarter and were rewarded with two tries from winger Kris Phillips. Carlisle weathered the wind and the slope in the first half at Kirkby Lonsdale to keep the home side down to a single penalty before scoring through centre Kurt Maulding just before the break. In the second half with the elements in their favour, tries followed for winger James Clark, centre Barry Earle and fly half Glenn Weightman as the Carlisle outfit capitalised on mistakes from the home side to ease away to a comfortable 26-6 win in this Cumbrian derby match.

Both LSH and AK felt they should have won as they fought out a 23 all draw at Moss lane. LSH had the most possession but were effectively kept out by AK’s spoiling tactics.

Altrincham Kersal started brightly registering a Holloway penalty after seven minutes and a J P. Singleton try five minutes later. LSH responded with a series of successful mauls leading to prop Mark Fryer offloading to winger Ian Stanley for a try converted by centre Paul McLindon. Ten minutes later LSH were in front after a quickly taken tap penalty from scrum half Matt Gaines led to Mark Williams charging over under the posts. Before half time though Kersal scored two more tries through Louis Taylor and Sam Moncur to lead 20-14 at the break. LSH dominated the second half but a stubborn AK defence restricted McLindon to three penalties which put LSH narrowly ahead until Holloway drew AK level after nine minutes of added on time.

Cheshire Vase The Wolves have drawn Sale away for their second round match, which is also the semi final. Second Team Pitch Goal Posts The club would like to thank most gratefully those members and in particular John Holloway who have generously donated to the fund for new upright and straight goal posts on the second team pitch.

RFU Accreditation Thanks largely to the perseverance of our chairman Dave Scanlon, the club is now one of the first to have been awarded the RFU’s Whole Seal of Approval. The RFU’s web site states if you look hard enough to find it that : - The RFU Seal of Approval accreditation recognises the effort and achievement of volunteers in reaching the standard required in the development of rugby across the whole club, and to plan for the long term sustainability of the club and rugby union. The Whole Club Seal of Approval accreditation was introduced in 2009 as a method of ensuring high quality provision of rugby in clubs. It builds on the established procedures of Mini and Youth Seal of Approval. Clubs are assessed by the RFU and must demonstrate evidence of good practice in areas such as club management, player development and recruitment, child protection, sports equity, coaching, refereeing and volunteering. Clearly Dave Scanlon, whose day job at Astra Zeneca encompasses all manner of modern management quality techniques, was the ideal man to guide the club through the accreditation process for which we thank him accordingly. I doubt that there would have been many others with the expertise, patience and

inclination to see the task through to completion. In the meantime, if you want to know more, then just go to the web site to read his statement on the subject. U16 Tournament Full marks to Drew Gardner for having the initiative to organise an U16 tournament at the club last weekend. Five visiting clubs turned up - Ashton U Lyme, Stockport, Didsbury Toc H, Bury and Leek - to play a round robin of 10 minute matches against each other. Judging by the number of spectators who came to support their teams, the event was clearly a resounding success and just may be Drew has hit upon a gap in the early season U16 calendar which hopefully the club can now fill every year. Wilmslow U16s, which you will remember nearly went extinct as U14s two years ago, now have a full compliment of around twenty five players and on the day played with considerable enthusiasm and some success. I didn’t stay until the end but Bury looked a big powerful side and Stockport had all the skills, with many of their players looking very comfortable both on the ball and running off each other. The Good and the Bad A couple of weeks ago my spectacles suddenly fell apart so I went to the optician who had originally supplied them. How long have you had them, they said. Sorry, there’s nothing we can do but can book you in for an eye test and a new pair of spectacles. Bollocks, I muttered, before walking a hundred yards or so to Vision Express. The first thing they did was to get out a tube of glue to make a temporary repair taking something like two minutes to do. I then booked myself in for an eye test on the following Tuesday at 11.40am. By 12.30pm that day, I was back out in Grove Street wearing a new pair of spectacles. No fuss, no bother, whole job done in less than an hour.

Having just returned from a few sunny days in Spain, I am a shade out of touch with rugby matters. What I do know is that, last Saturday, descendants of Ian Smith, captain of the club 1950/52, came down to Pownall Park to spread his ashes on the scene of some of his happiest days. More will, no doubt, have been written about him on other pages, but I thought a few words written by him about the 1st team exploits in Liverpool in 1951 would be apt today for our visitors from that neck of the woods. “Liverpool, of course, had its trams…. I think we had two teams out against Liverpool on this particular day. Anyhow, there seemed to be a lot of people from Wilmslow on Lord Street after closing time. It was a Saturday night and some essential work had started on the tram track; to the blocks on the edge. We got talking to the blokes doing the job and said how awful it was to be working on a Saturday night, and would they like a hand. They said ‘Yes’ and showed us what to do. Slowly, we took over and the gang retired to make tea in their tent and I found myself in charge of block removing and we soon had two rails round a bend supported by nothing much. Nobody thought too much about this till in the distance we heard the approach of a tram. From nowhere, I had got hold of a peaked cap, not unlike those worn by inspectors. I donned this and held up my hand for the tram to stop and that it could no longer proceed; pointing to our road works. Then ensued a very funny conversation where we all, rugby players and tram driver, castigated the transport division of Liverpool Council for not telling people what was going on. It was agreed that the only thing to do was to empty the tram, and send the passengers (it was crowded) on to the next stop by foot, whilst the tram went round the unsupported bend. We made a very efficient job of clearing the tram, insisting that the driver and conductor looked under all the seats to see that nobody was hiding and then had a long conversation about the possibility of a refund for those who had to walk; one of our number playing the part of an aggrieved passenger. When the tram started to move, we all stole off the other way and waited for the crash but, thankfully, none came and no harm was done. A lot of tomfoolery was enjoyed by all.”

The front runners for the new season are already established. The two surprises are that Vale of Lune should be heading the table on points difference from Sale and that Wirral lie in third place unbeaten. Will they be able to upset Sale at Clatterbridge this weekend. Widnes, LSH and Carlisle have all accomplished two wins with the five of the remaining eight recording a single success. Manchester, Anselmians and Fleetwood are yet to register anything other than bonus points. Rochdale are awaiting a five point penalty deduction for an honest mistake of playing an unregistered player. Sale found themselves 3 -17 down after only 14 minutes as Widnes opened up in dramatic fashion. Widnes centre Chris Schofield chipped ahead and winger Paul O’Connor won the foot race to score the opening try. With Kevin Leadbetter kicking the conversion and adding a penalty Sale’s position then deteriorated even more when a Dave Welsh interception and Leadbetter conversion added to Widnes tally. All Sale had achieved was a penalty from Andy Rowley, as the side struggled to get into the match. They managed though to claw their way back with the forwards taking the lead as tries from Danny Waddy and Scott Harrison plus an Andy Rowley conversion narrowed the gap to just two points at the break. In the second half Widnes extended their lead back to 10 points with a Paul O’Connor try and Dave Welsh penalty after 63 minutes. Sale though bounced back late on with Danny Waddy and finally Jonathan Keep scoring the match winning try on 74 minutes. Rowley added the conversions for another bonus point win, although it was a nervy end to a close game. Stuart Vernon waxed lyrical about Vale of Lune’s 47-3 thrashing of Anselmians. Kick off was delayed for thirty minutes by traffic chaos on the M6. It’s always bad as you leave the M6 for Lancaster and when the game started Simon Mason quickly landed a penalty for the Saints. Vale didn’t make much progress initially as Mason marshalled his troops into dogged defence but when Vale did get going they looked impressive, clocking up another seven tries to bring their total to twenty after three games. Full back James Hodder (Grand Cru) claimed a hat trick in addition to being a worthy recipient of the man of the match bubbly as on the day the Vale achieved their goal with a degree of comfort but it wasn’t as easy a ride as the score line would suggest. Another of Vale’s young players, winger Jordan Dorrington was rocked back with a ferocious tackle which resulted in an ambulance being summoned but after examination at hospital he was discharged. It took until twenty minutes before Alex Baines made the run from which Sam Wallbank scored. Ten minutes on Hodder kicked ahead for James Curran and Andy Powers to chase and when the ball was moved across the field Hodder took the final pass to score his first of the afternoon. Just before the break Hodder had his second. A messy passage of play at the start of the second half followed before the Vale scrum earned a penalty try. Now firmly in charge, Hodder got his third, reminding the Vale correspondent of the Light Cavalry overture by Franz Von Suppe, complete with bugles blasting, organ pipes vibrating, cymbals crashing and a frantic drum beat. Alex Baines and Adam MacCluskie completed the scoring in the 73rd. and 75th. minutes without further musical accompaniment. Both Leigh and Fleetwood were still looking for their first win of the season and Leigh made home advantage count as the won by 29-14. It was a good win against a young, athletic and competitive Fleetwood side. After an initial foray from the keen visitors, Leigh planted their first penalty of the game into the corner for skipper Ian Wood to finish off a catch and drive. Adam Dyson then went clear but appeared to be impeded as he chased his own kick ahead. Calvin Crompton was on hand though to gather the loose ball to score in the corner. Leigh were now into their stride as fly half Jimmy Wilkinson put a delightful long pass into the hands of Dyson for their third score. The important bonus point try came in first half injury time when centre Jason Carson rounded his man with ease to score by the posts. Young winger Elliot Ryan converted to put Leigh in total control at the
