The Interprint Group has installed a digital décor sample production system at three internationalcorporate locations. The method is quick and meets high visual quality demands. The use of gravure ink

pigments and gravure paper ensures that all digital samples can be accurately reproduced in the final décorprinting.

The digital sample production significantly reduces the product development time for décors. “Thehandling of the digital data is very simple. A large number of colour variants of a décor can be produced inthe shortest possible time. All versions can subsequently be laminated onto sample boards,” explainedSalvatore Figliuzzi, Décor Development and Marketing Manager at Interprint. “This allows the customer toindividually modify the décor colour directly at the computer workstation on our premises and immediatelyselect the desired colour.” Interprint’s digital prints are free of metamerism which allows the customer to

assess the colours much more accurately compared to traditional photo paper andpigments.

Another advantage of Interprint’s digital method is that it is more sustainable andenvironmentally friendly than the conventional gravure-printed sample. Cylinderengraving can be dispensed with. The lesser use of paper and colour protects theenvironment. The overall energy requirement decreases significantly.

Interprint is already using the digital sample production method at its locations inGermany, Italy and Malaysia. Further locations of the corporate group will follow in thenear future.0049 2932 9500

ONSRUD SOLVES CUTTINGGLITCH FOR SPIRASevere wear on standard carbide tools used formachining fire resistant melamine was a real problemfor retail joinery manufacturer Spira Projects. Thecompany found that after only three or four sheets ofthe material the cutter was worn out – so the searchwas on for a solution. The answer came from ATAEngineering Processes who advised switching to theirnew Onsrud Marathon Cutter which is believed to bethe longest running compression tool available. Thishas been achieved thanks to advances incutting geometry and the addition of anOnsrud coating that creates a harder andtougher cutting edge. The coating isformulated to protect the cutting edgefrom the high temperature generatedwhen routing laminated and compositewood products. The cutter is available in3/8 to 1/2in sizes and comes with eithertwo or three cutting edges. 01442 [email protected]

Wintersteiger Thin-Cutting Days attractvisitors from around the world This autumn the Wintersteiger headquarters in Ried turned into an internationalcompetence centre for innovative thin-cutting technology. Customers and interestedparties from across Europe, the USA and New Zealand accepted an invitation to thin-cutting days.

"The entire range of industries was represented, from producers of boards andpanels, furniture, parquet and doors to manufacturers of composite materials for theautomotive industry," says a delighted Franz Haas, Head of the Woodtech Division.

"The single-module band saws were able to score during the thin-cutting days. The DSB Singlehead

310 won the audience with its reversing system, and the DSB Singlehead660 was able to arouse interest with 660mm cutting width, particularlyfor producers of multi-layer boards. The mobile saws for sawmills andcarpentry as well as the block and band resaws were also compelling. There is a noticeable trend toward minimal use of material. As a specialistin thin-cutting, we strive for each and every bit of extra efficiency. Even1/10 of a millimetre of timber saved is money in our customers' pockets –certainly a highly popular topic," says Haas. 0043 7752 919326

Show organiser Carlo Giobbi.

From the moment you step off theplane at Venice's Marco Polo airport, the influence of the Sicam

organisation greets you: "You go toexhibition?" asks an unusually smiley-faced immigration officer, as if his briefhad come directly from the Giobbifamily; from behind a Sicam desk at theexit to the arrivals hall, Sicam staffemerge to guide you to the waitingSicam coach; not fifty metres from theentrance where the coach drops you,check-in is progressing like a well-oiledmachine. If it was Carlo Giobbi's aim toshow the world how an exhibitionshould be organised, he and his teamdeserve guru status for this, the thirdedition of what must be Italy's premierfurniture components show.

For all its intensity, though the aisleswere busy from start to finish, Sicamgives an air of serenity. The openness ofthe stands, the absence of on-standhospitality and the simple, clear signagein the aisles overhead each stand makethis one of the easiest exhibitions tonavigate. It's business-like - and plenty ofbusiness was being written. "It's been avery good show for us," said anenthusiastic Acelyn Idikut on the RomaPlastik stand. "The response we've hadfrom suppliers at Sicam has beenphenomenal," echoed David Caulfieldfrom a BA Components stand that wascrowded with visitors. "This is our first

Showingon a stand that buzzed with activity next to new owners,Egger, Roma Plastik announced the up-coming launch oftheir stock edgebanding programme in 2012 andshowed 47 new perfect match edgings, matched exactlywith Egger products. "We also produced pre-glued laseredging," added a cautious Acelya Idikut, Roma'smarketing manager. "We are ready for when the markettakes off."0090 262 648 4500www.romaplastik.com

time here. We never expected the showto be so successful," he added.

Liane Klauke from Impress wassimilarly complimentary: "Sicam isperfect," she said. "All our very importantclients from Italy, Russia and even Iranhave been on the stand. We did notexpect to see so many visitors from somany different countries!" It's a story weheard over and over again.

It's clear that exhibitors are alsotaking Sicam very, very seriously. In thewake of Interzum, it was surprising tosee quite so many new products makingtheir debuts on stands. Although someof the major décor specialists wereabsent, Schattdecor, Süddekor, Impress,Kronospan, Egger and others used theexhibition as a showcase for scores ofnew designs, furthering the co-ordinatedvisual-tactile theme with ever moreexciting structures. We were particularlyimpressed with five prototypes on theKronospan stand - hopefully theseheavily embossed and surface-treatedwoodgrains will make it to market. Fullmarks to Süddekor, too, for a stunningnew cross-cut butcher block décor. Andon the Schattdecor stand, ClaudiaKüchen and her team had been busilycreating works of art, among them anexceptional new interpretation of exoticheartwood.

At the cutting edge of edgebandingtechnology, the edgebanding suppliersare all waiting for the industry to catchup, several paving the way with an offerof new pre-glued laser edging fromstock. Commented an enthusiasticZdenek Ryzner, the Chairman ofHranipex, "We have developed ourExpress Collection for PP edges now. 15-20 décors are available in 100 linearmetre lengths. Our big laser customersare creating the demand." For sure, assoon as the cost of laser technologystarts to come down - and it will whenthe technology becomes morewidespread and matures - we'll see moreand more glueline-free edging appliedwith laser edgebanders. Perhaps the laseredgebander manufacturers will takeinspiration from the edgebandingsuppliers and start to adopt a morepositive approach to help create amarket which, for the moment, has allbut plateaued in a chicken and eggstalemate.

"Sicam is perfect. All our veryimportant clients from Italy, Russiaand even Iran have been on thestand. We did not expect to see somany visitors from so manydifferent countries!”

unique prism principle sets the benchmark. The platformconcept for the system allows a combination of differentheights and design forms for both drawers and pull-outs.

Fascias are big business. The Italians, once the price and style leaders, arebeginning to feel the pressure. BAComponents is in the overtaking laneand enjoying success after success withits made-to-measure offer, which nowextends to curved doors, even concaveglass curved doors. BA is also expandingits offer to include Glidor, a new slidingdoor range, and has installed a newpressing line so it can offer flat panellamination.

Hardware for doors and drawers isbecoming more discreet, smoother andmore functional. There were new hingedesigns from Grass, Ferrari and Salice, new undermount drawer systems andsofter soft close systems for drawers, doors, shutter doors and sliding doors. Two new products we particularly likedwere the soft open, soft close Lift-O-Matcombination for bottom mount flapdoors from Stabilus and the retro-fittablesliding door damper from Ferrari. Thelatter sits invisibly behind the top track, facilitating soft close and soft open, evenwith sizeable bedroom mirror doors. Forthe ultimate luxury product, there waslittle to beat Bortoluzzi's electric softopen, soft close, co-planar system, available through Salice UK. Touch toopen, touch to close - there's even aremote opening system.

Storage solutions are advancing allthe time and, in general, the quality hasleapt forward in the last few years. Theyseem to range from the hopelesslyimpractical to the very sensible. Fullmarks to Inoxa for its neat DynamicCorner with removable, drawer-likewooden baskets. But what were thedesigners thinking of on one particularGerman stand when they came up witha corner solution that soft-closedemphatically before the basket could beenticed from the base unit? MaybeGerman cooks like to play hide and seekwith their vegetables...

In conclusion, though the weather inthe first couple of days did everythingpossible to dampen spirits, Sicam 2011was intent on delivering, both for visitorsand for exhibitors. Slick organisation anda great atmosphere contributed much tothe resounding success of a show whichhas seduced its sector in a remarkablyshort time. If you didn't make it this year, make a mental note not to miss the 2012edition. Sicam will not disappoint.Guaranteed!

In addition to trend-setting zero glueline laser

edgebands andindividual digital designs,

Döllken now has aGreenguard solution for

educational use.

Demand for healthy, sustainableproducts and buildings isgrowing. Over the last decade,

consumers, designers and furnituremanufacturers have steadily adoptedthe idea that sustainability sells - buthow does one prove that a product issustainable? Döllken’s Greenguard certi-fication programme provides everythingyou need - even for the most de-manding of school environments.

With its high-quality thermoplasticedging products (polyvinyl chloride, acry-lonitrile-butadiene-styrene, polypropyleneand polymethyl methacrylate), Döllkenmet the strenuous requirements ofGreenguard Children & Schools certifica-tion programme. The acclaimed Green-guard Institute in Atlanta, USA, awardedworldwide certification which includes allproduction locations for edgebandings inthe Döllken Group (Germany, China, In-donesia, Australia, Chile, USA andCanada). The Greenguard Indoor AirQuality Programme tests products with

regard to the emission of over 10,000possible chemical compounds. Testingprocedures are carried out in the mostmodern stainless steel testing chambersaccording to recognized ISO norms.Guidance levels and requirements de-rive from internationally recognizedstandards, such as those of the BlueAngel certification (Der Blaue Engel),ISO 14001 or the American govern-ment agency EPA (Environmental Pro-tection Agency). Moreover productshave to be tested annually to keep upcertification. The Greenguard Children& Schools certification programme con-tains challenging certification criteria forproducts because in these areas there isan especially intensive use of facilities, and because “children react especiallysensitive to emissions”.

Yes, it’s possible,” read the sloganon the back wall of the BA Com-ponents stand at Sicam. “What-

ever you want, we can do,” added anexcited David Caulfield, “Just ask.” Hemeant it.

When many companies have foundthe market tough, BA has been flyingalong with one new development afteranother. What began with membranepressed doors has become a range ofproducts backed by exceptional cus-tomer service and a website thatmakes BA one of the easiest suppliersto deal with.

The heart of BA’s business remainsdoors and new at Sicam were metallic

colour options to the Zurfiz range, convex - even glazed convex - curveddoors, and a range comprising three fullin-frame doors in vinyl called Craftsman(Craftsman in-frame, Cotswold - whichlooks like a nine-piece - and a Contem-porary five-piece). “It’s the first timewe’ve exhibited 3d pressed doors,”added David. “We’ve brought somenew ones: Nebworth, Tullimor andBroadway in seven colours. The mattepainted effect door has been very wellreceived, especially the stone grey andolive colours. From January, we’reaiming for seven day turnaround on allour made-to-measure product, too.”

Schattdecor enjoyed success at SICAM inPordenone, exhibiting over 40 new décorsas well as samples from the digitalVISIONS collection and the second editionof its Caravan Decor collection book.

Schattdecor’s presentation motto for theSICAM exhibition this October was a strikinglook combined with a discernible texture -

and there were over 40 new décors in their boothat the show in Pordenone. This included tendeveloped specifically to suit the location, withthe Italian market and its customers in mind.

The full expansive range of Schattdecor’sdevelopment and textural prowess was displayedwith a top selection of new décor variations, eachcomplemented by perfectly matching finishes inmelamine, Smartfoil or Postfoil with a 3D or realpore effect.

Visitors experienced trend themes titled “pureEssence”, “tomorrow’s Souvenir” and “industrialHeritage” in sections of Schattdecor’s boothwhich presented an interesting mix of strong-selling and Italian-designed décors.

Two of the new Italian décors, Olmo Laevisand the exciting Larix, attracted the greatestattention whilst the continuing demand for oakwith a restrained but striking look was reflectedby Riyeka Oak and Chambord Oak.0049 8031 275 2779www.schattdecor.de

A calm overall impression is created by Riyeka Oak,marked by realistic negative pores. Thepredominantly straightgrain look is enlivened bycrossfires and tiny knots.

Olmo Laevis is based on a finely-grained elm withthe subtle ray flecks typical for the wood. Theelegant, natural look of woodgrain like the elmgoes well with the patterns and colours of thefurnishing style which reflects the optimistic era ofthe 50s and 60s.

Larix is a purely plain-stripe pine décor with verylittle movement in the grain that is finely balanced

in colouration. It makes an arresting 3D effectthanks to accomplished reproduction of the wire-

brushed material. The décor reflects the trendtowards striking décors that work with matching

textured press plates.

A rustic décor offering a touch of distinction,Chambord Oak takes its inspiration from materialwith a very fine porous grain with additional negativepores. The tightly-laid planking contributes to thebalanced colouration and the layout is animated bynumerous knots and narrow flame figures.

TTrend prediction is an art; onewhich the wood based panelmanufacturer, Egger, seems to do

rather well. Last year, Egger updated itsUK collection with a new range of dé-cors that raised the bar to new heights.Egger’s Product Marketing Manager,Andrew Sanderson, explains the suc-cess: “Last year we moved into a newera for MFC reproductions and this yearwe continue to invest in textures andnew finishes in order to move theproduct closer and closer to the lookand feel of solid wood and veneer. Wehave had great success with the newdécors we launched over the last twoyears and when we show our cus-tomers our latest décors alongsidethose we launched even 5-6 years agothey can't believe the difference. A greatexample of this is H1372 NaturalAragon Oak. With its highly defined,

natural grain with cross-fires and subtle planking, it's easily mistaken forthe real thing.”

Egger's recent woodgrain décorshave all been designed to work in har-mony with a number of its latest unicolours. As Andrew explains: “Thetrend for mixing and matching wood-grains with uni colours continues togrow in popularity. We have designedour latest woodgrain introductions to

combine with our versatile uni colourpalettes and vice-versa. With colourtrends evolving towards increased useof muted tones we have developedgreen-grey and brown-grey colourpalettes. Our range of eye-catchingdécors and modern classic woodgrainscan be combined with these two unicolour palettes to create stark, moderncontrasts as well as softer more harmo-nious contrasts.”

Last year Egger updated its classicwoods with new Ash, Oak and Cherrydesigns. H1215 ST22 Brown CassinoAsh is completely different to the tradi-tional black and white Ash effects ofthe 1980s. As consumers select bycolour rather than by species, BrownCassino Ash could be considered as anext generation alternative to Egger'sH3703 Natural Aida Walnut.

Oak remains a firm favourite.

H1372 ST22 Natural Aragon Oak is avery natural linear oak which haswidespread appeal and can be usedin a variety of ways.

In recent years the demand forwarm, red toned cherries has beenfalling steadily and is now being re-placed by a new generation of moderncherries in completely new colour di-rections. Following the European-widesuccess of H1615 ST9 Romana Cherry,

Egger added H3660 ST9 Light Vene-tian Cherry to its 2011 range. The tex-ture ST9 enhances this décor to give itthe look and feel of a veneer.

To provide more individuality, Eggerhas also introduced two eye-catching expressive décors: versatile H3012 ST22Coco Bolo meets the needs for strikingyet very natural exotic reproductions(it's been widely used in kitchens, bed-rooms and living rooms, often com-bined with uni décors such as U727 ST9Stone Grey or U741 ST9 Lava), andH3058 ST22 Mali Wenge providing re-alistic 3D character to a familiar exotic. It offers better value, and a more consis-tent appearance to veneers.

Modern interior design iscombining kitchens andliving rooms together more

Mixing and matching colours anddesigns is used to define thesecontinuous spaces, to bridge, shapeand differentiate the atmosphere anduse of an area. A connection isprovided by using a colour that cancontinue into another zone whileintroducing a sharp contemporarydesign creates a distinctive highlightelement to define a separation.

The recently relaunched RenolitAlkoren range has an assortment ofseven matt plain colours, with thewhite and two creams also availablein a more satin finish. The extensiverange all have a paint-effect surfacetexture which benefits from stainresistance and superior scratch andmar performance.

Nobody can argue about the fact thattrading conditions are tough. Thecompanies that find their way through

and even those who strengthen their marketposition are those prepared to be bold. 'Thinklaterally', 'think outside the box' … all of thesephrases apply. The thing is that market activityshifts at different economic times and manymanufacturers at the moment will tell you thattargeting areas of activity is essential. For thisthey need to be flexible in terms of theirdesign and manufacturing abilities. This allowsthem to focus on the middle to upper end ofparticular markets when the volume end issluggish or to move into completely newmarket areas.

It’s called smart manufacturing.Crucially, Working with Wood comes in a

non-Ligna year so the importance of holdingthe event becomes all the more relevant forBritish and Irish manufacturers. Manycompanies are now far more particular aboutthe equipment they invest in. They’re lookingfar beyond ‘fit for purpose’. They’re lookingfor machinery that offers fast set-up times, software interfacing, low energy drive motorsand more.

At W12 Working with Wood visitors willfind smart manufacturing technology at alllevels under one roof with some excitingtrends already emerging from exhibitorsreporting back. Readers of Furniture Journal willbe able to keep abreast of this news as itcomes in at W12 over the coming months.

One of the world’s largest machinery andtechnology groups, Homag, will definitely

be a must for visitors looking for methods tointegrate manufacturing processes. Homaghave introduced exciting new innovations inintegrated production and control software. These go hand in hand with technicalinnovations in 5-axis CNC machining, edgebanding and automated storage systemsfor routers and panel saws which can result in40% increases in production capacity soinvestment can be amortised in around 12months.

For anyone looking to widen theirbusiness activities Dutch widebelt sandingspecialists Boere inform W12 that the designof their machines allows for amazing diversity. At Working with Wood they will becelebrating their 70th year and the ensuingexpertise and experience has allowed them todevelop sanding solutions as delicate asremoving the aluminium coating from poly-carbonate CDs for recycling … to stripping offcement, paint and other residue fromscaffolding planks for re-use! In between theyturn paper and waste into notice boards andalso clean and brush carpet tiles for re-use atexhibitions. Looking forwards, their newelectric motor fits into the CRS processmeaning that only the minimum amount ofpower is drawn for the operation in progress.

These are just two examples of signed-upexhibitors looking forward to October 2012.

The “W series” of exhibitions have alwaysseen milestones of success. At W10, forexample, exhibitor Rehau held a seminar tointroduce the new edgebanding materialdesigned for bonding to the panel edge via a

laser system – important for bothmanufacturers and designers. As a result ofW10 being used as the UK launch pad for theconcept, one of the UK’s largest cabinet doormanufactures became the first to install astate-of-the-art laser edgebanding machinethat could apply the new material and is nowenjoying phenomenal success with a range ofacrylic doors with the new seamless edge.Others have quickly followed. This examplealso serves to underscore the vital cross-overvalue between W12 Working with Wood andW12 Working with Design.

It’s all about bringing people andbusinesses together to disseminateinformation, exchange ideas, stimulate newmethods of working and solving problems. There is no other forum where this value offace-to-face interaction can be achieved.

In the months approaching the exhibitionthe W12 team will be bring readers furtherinformation about what they can look forwardto seeing and why they should be ensuringthat the dates receive priority in their diaries.

“W12 will be the highlight of the BritishWoodworking Industry’s 2012 calendar andwe at Homag UK are, as always, fullysupportive of this important event. TheBirmingham exhibition in all its various guiseshas always been close to our hearts and we,more than any other company, have beenkeen to see this exhibition survive and prospereven through difficult times. To me it isimportant for the UK woodworking industryto have a quality exhibition where companies

can keep abreast of technology and trends emerging from Europe and furtherafield. W12 will be the perfect opportunity for potential investors to view thevery latest developments from the Homag Group and we will be presenting afull range of machinery and software from entry level options through to highcapacity solutions – something for everyone!”Simon Brooks, Sales & Marketing Director, Homag UK

Product differentiation" is becoming morethan a buzz phrase in the context of thecurrent furniture market. It’s actually the

difference between winning and losing, successand failure. Any one of the top kitchen furnituremanufacturers in Britain (and across Europe) todaywill tell you that they have to offer a highlybespoke product in order to move forwards.

The UK division of one of the world’s pre-eminent fittings manufacturers admits the kitchenindustry is difficult but, whereas they measure a9% contraction overall, their sales are up byaround 3% and a lot of this success in bucking thetrend can be attributed to offering products andservices that allow their customers to add specialvalue and design/performance to their products.

The board and surface materials suppliersconcur. They say that important trends emergedfrom Interzum in May and these will now have thespotlight on them at ZOW in Germany inFebruary. In October 2012 the W12 Working withDesign exhibition will be the first and only nationalshow to highlight and focus on these newproducts and trends identified by experts for theUK market.

Originality will be the watchword at Workingwith Design and visitors can expect to see thecompletely new designs and products fromedgebanding suppliers, surface lamination experts, solid surface exponents as well as the latest indesign and CAD software with fascinating new

integrated packages that make the manufacturerand designers’ projects a pleasure to accomplish.Fittings manufacturers, coating and adhesivessuppliers also bring new technologies to themarket via Working with Design – a vital forum fordiscussing advances in product technology in thecontext of new standards.

At the same time, designers visiting Workingwith Design will be able to delight in an exhibitionof products and ideas that, rather than placinglimits and restrictions on their aspirations, open upand widen new horizons and creativeopportunities.

What does this all mean? It means that visitorswill have a unique opportunity to view the tools oftheir future success in a single location.

Naturally, the seamless proximity with theW12 Working with Wood technology andmachinery event makes the days of 7–10 Octoberin 2012 a must for future diary planning.

The immediate uptake for space at Workingwith Design has meant that organisersHuddlestone have already extended availablespace. John Smith-Bodden of Huddlestone says:“The response to the concept of the show hasbeen amazingly encouraging. There’s a lot ofexcitement about the potential opportunities thatan exhibition of the format will generate.”

The last decade has seen a massiveupsurge in the importance ofwarm, natural, tactile surfaces; sur-

faces influenced by nature which bringelements of the great outdoors into theliving rooms, kitchens and bedrooms ofmodern homes. Highly-figured, naturaltimbers, roughly hewn and cross cutsurfaces with ever deeper texture, planked effects - for many décor special-ists, these have become the Holy Grailof the 21st century. Yet to Menen-basedDecospan Group, tactile qualities, warmth, figure and naturalness havebeen central to everything they havedone since the company was formedback in 1982. And now, throughstrategic acquisition and shrewd invest-ment in new technology, DecospanGroup is taking even these desirablequalities to new levels with easy-to-use

products available in quantities that areintended to match exactly with yourproduction, large or small.

Decospan Group’s young and ener-getic European marketing manager,Pieterjan Desmet, the grandson of thefounder, is passionate and confidentabout the company’s latest generationof products. “Everything we do is re-lated to 0.6mm or 2mm sliced veneer,”he enthuses. “We carry 161 woodspecies in stock and, regardless ofwhether you need one panel or 1000,we will supply in ten days. Here, the company’s flexible ve-neer, Decoflex, is also made - alongwith Casaleno, a contemporary alterna-tive to wallpaper, and Par-ky flooring.Across in France, the Group’s Frenchacquisition manufactures componentsfrom ready-to-assemble veneers tolipped table tops, preparing everything(except for the staining and finishing)to your exact requirements with min-imum orders of just 50 pieces. nnoorrtthheerrnn rreennDecorative Panels’ newfactory is due to comeon stream in May. In

the meantime, theproject is an inspiration

to British industry.

If ever the British government needed ahome-grown model to hold up as inspi-ration to the rest of British industry, then

surely Decorative Panels must be at the topof their list. Whilst the company’s manage-ment is hardly complacent about the recessionary forces at work on world mar-kets, their desire and determination tosucceed and grow has resulted in an eye-popping £8.5 million investment in abrand new factory - at a time when manyindustrialists are fighting shy of investment.

“We’re not complacent, that's forsure,” says Managing Director, Guy Met-calfe. “It’s evident that it's going to be arough market for a few years yet, but theonly way you can possibly open opportu-nities is to be as efficient as you can and tohave a facility that is flexible. The new fac-tory will allow us to get into other areas, such as producing ex-stock products. Of

course, such a level of investment bringsnervousness but also opportunities. Thequickest way of going backwards is tostand still. People are still buying products. If you can't get organic growth, you haveto win market share and you can only dothat if you are the best at what you do.That’s what the new factory is all about. We've bought the facility to grow.”

Converting the heavy engineering fac-tory into a state-of-the-art furniture com-ponent manufacturing facility demandednot only cash, a substantial portion ofwhich Decorative Panels Group financeditself, it called upon the skills of the entireteam. “We've always been keen to dothis,” says Guy, speaking on behalf ofhimself and Chairman, Steve Gaunt. “Butit’s been a team effort: Malcolm Forward, the MD of the components division, hasbeen involved in machinery specifications

She isvery, very involved in it. It's been a realteam effort headed up by Steve.”

Since acquisition of the site not muchmore than a year ago, work on the interiorhas been relentless. “We’ve used localcontractors throughout. The whole placeis now painted. The extraction is three-

quarters finished, it's fully wired, thelighting is in, the heating is installed, thefloor is being painted. The factory ispainted inside, the interior cladding hasbeen replaced and work on the exteriorcladding will start soon. All exterior workstarts in January and that includes strip-ping out and refurbishing the MarketingDesign Suite, which will show productand skills from all three companies - Com-ponents, Lamination and Furniture. It willbe a showcase for our current and futurecustomers; a window onto the productswe are able to offer our customers.”

Leading specialists Cades werenaturally delighted to be awardedthe contract for the dust

extraction system to service the newDecorative Panels factory which isunder construction in Elland, Yorkshire.

The system being installed is aMoldow Energy Manager Systemwhich will give the production facilityoptimum energy control and usagedata far exceeding the capabilities ofother systems on the market. This isprimarily because the filter system is atruly bespoke design, tailored to theprecise needs of the individualcustomer and encompassing the verylatest in dust extraction technology.

The system features two MHLnegative pressure filters with a highpressure carriage cleaning system, eight inverter driven fansets which arecapable of extracting between a minimum of 5,000m3/hr and amaximum of 275,000m3/hr, together with over 2,000 metres of clippedductwork. The choice of fans and filter will work together to achieveenergy saving results which would previously not have been possiblewhilst maintaining the required levels of extraction at all times.

Steve Rhodes of Cades comments: “Whilst Cades have undertakencontracts at this level in the past, an installation of this size is pretty rarein the current climate. We are thrilled that a company we have workedwith for many years are enjoying the success to warrant such asignificant expansion and we look forward to supporting them inbringing the new factory to fruition.”

is faster than the sparks themselves. It detects them with its highly

sensitive infrared sensor,intercepts and extinguishes

them in a flash. It needs no periodic inspection.

The CONTROL LOGIC system is designed for “total supervision”.

It verifies that sparks have been extinguished, gives prompt warning of

any malfunction and, if needed, cuts off the duct and stops the fan.

Dust Control Systems Ltdhas completed a major

installation at the new premises of

leading hardwood streetfurniture manufacturer,

Woodscape Ltd.

Growing business made Lancashire-basedWoodscape decide to relocate to larger moremodern premises in Blackburn - just a few miles

from their old workshops. The move saw the companyincrease its floor space from 18,000 sq. ft. to 42,000sq. ft. allowing them to accommodate three separate group companies under one roof.

Woodscape’s Managing Director, Richard Nelson, explains: “We simply outgrew our oldfactory and moving to the new site more than doubled our floor space. Over thirtywoodworking machines had to be re-installed and a complete re-appraisal of our dustextraction requirements was necessary.”

Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at Dust Control Systems said: “We were invited byWoodscape to carry out a study of their extraction needs and we put forward a distinctiveproposal which centred round a filter unit which combines both reverse-jet filter and wastesilo in a single space-saving package. The unit would deal with dust and chips from all 33machines, provide waste storage and, in addition, return filtered air back into the workshopto reduce heating costs. Our proposal also included all related electrics and compressed airwork as well as provision of access equipment for the installation.”

The filter layout design can readily accommodate future installation of a woodwasteheater system. In addition to wood dust extraction equipment, DCS also supplied andinstalled a dry back spray booth. Richard Nelson says that Woodscape is more than happywith the performance of the installation and the back up from Dust Control Systems. More information: 01924 482500.

The SCM Group's Minimax divisionhas recently launched a range ofnew machines and updated ex-

isting models to give increased capaci-ties and more features included in thestandard specification.

The new SCM Minimax CU 410Elite S Combination Machine is a com-bination woodworking machine thatguarantees ease of use, flexibility, reli-ability and precision. Machining iseasy, thanks to a newly-positionedsaw blade lifting hand wheel (in themanual version) at the front of themachine. LEDs show the rotationspeed of the spindle, making the set-ting up of the machine easier. Thesliding table is now 330mm wide.Spindle rotation has been invertedand it’s now possible to fit cutters ofup to 240mm diameter to the top ofthe spindle itself. There’s even a newdust and shavings device guarding theplaner, which now has a 410mmworking width. Tables are 2200mm inlength.

Another new machine is the SCMMinimax Lab 300 Plus. The new sawunit, tilting 90 to 45 degrees, can nowhouse a blade with a diameter of315mm. With a maximum workingheight of the material increased to220mm for the thicknesser, a 300mmplaner width capacity, and with a max-imum spindle length of 100mm, the

Lab 300 Plus is truly a high specifica-tion combination machine. The carriage, up to 270mm wide, offers increased stability, even for larger workpieces. Particular attention has beenpaid to ergonomics: there’s a newtable opening system with 90 degreerotation towards the machine and anew scoring unit with adjustment per-formed outside the machine. There’s anew dust and shavings conveyorguarding the planer and the spindlemoulder guard for trimming.

Also new is the Advance 21 for fastprecision drilling. This new single headmultiple spindle drilling machine, with21 spindles at 32mm centre distance, features a new design and a solid basethat supports a 905x372mm steelworktable, to ensure precise machiningto a hundredth of a millimetre, verti-cally or horizontally. All the controls arepositioned on the front of the machine, ensuring the passage from one settingto the next is comfortable and conve-nient for the operator. The new extrac-tion system, integrated in the drillinghead, ensures the work area and themachine are kept clean of dust. TheAdvance 21 allows operators to createcomponents, in solid wood or panels, from 10 to 85mm in height.

Ahorizontal pressure of 45 tonscan be achieved with the newSergiani range of presses and

GSLA systems for laminboard bars andvery thick blockboard panels.

Sergiani, a leading press manufac-turer within the SCM Group, has comeup with an innovative design for theupper mobile plate and the opposinghydraulic bar which allows high pres-sures to be achieved. The result is in-creased productivity, reduced pressingtimes and improved gluing quality. Thevisible quality of the panel's surface isalso improved, even for hardwoods, because the machine compensates fortolerances of the widths of the strips.

The high horizontal pressure, com-bined with a working opening of150mm, allows the pressing of verythick panels and laminboard bars with

the same press. With this new solution, both continuous production and indi-vidual panel work are possible. Theplates can be heated with a water or oilboiler or the press may be connectedto a high frequency generator for in-creased productivity.

GSLA solutions have independentadjustments of the horizontal and ver-tical pressures as well as the opposinghydraulic bar, with automatic pressurerecovery to guarantee correct adjust-ments based on the panel being machined. To increase productivity still further, Sergiani can also supplyautomatic lines and plants, which canreach a speed of 150metres/min whenmaking up the strips.

For details, visit the company’s web-site www.scmgroup-uk.com or callSCM (GB) on 0115 9770044.

Increased productivity, reduced pressing times and improved gluingquality are just three of the advantages users of laminboard barsand blockboard panels will benefit from with a Sergiani press.
