USDA Bill S.607 Response

According to the Joel Holtrop, Deputy Chief of the National Forest System:

“Expanding opportunities for year-round use will encourage more ofthe public to experience and appreciate the national forests. Skiareas introduce the national forests to our increasingly urbanpopulation.

Ski areas are some of the most developed sites on the nationalforests. Focusing more of the developed outdoor recreationalactivities in these areas could reduce negative impacts in other

areas of the national forests. One example of a populardeveloped outdoor recreational activity isfreestyle mountain biking. By focusing this activity atski areas, ski area operators would be able to increase utilization ofexisting infrastructure, and the impacts on surrounding NationalForest System lands caused by freestyle biking may be minimized.”
