Executive summary
With a total population of 6 million people, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia represent a small but
interesting market for fashion retailers. The level of shopping malls is quite high and often more
modern than in Western Europe.
During the last few years the Baltic economies were among the growth leaders in the region and that
has boosted a value and volume increase in consumption. However, due to the recent slow-down in
the economic growth caused by (mostly) external factors there will be a negative effect on the growth
in the fashion retail sector. The low turnover level per capita in the apparel retail sector remains a
problem. Nevertheless, long term prospects remain positive and optimistic.
The major drawbacks of the Baltic fashion retail market are its small scale and rather small density of
inhabitants. Although the fashion retail system is quite similar in all the three Baltic States, it is not
always possible to distribute clothing to all the three countries choosing one of them as a partner.
Separate fashion retailers are often needed as a distributor in each of these countries, although the
biggest ones are present in all three the Baltic States.
There are slight differences in the three markets. For instance in Estonia the city centre of Tallinn is
very important as it is a touristic attraction place with very fashionable consumers and a concentration
of young people. There is a domination of the typical shopping centre concept with no clear leader.
There is however not a big potential except in the Tallinn city centre where sales depend on the
touristic flows. In Lithuania there are other economical centres except Vilnius whereas in Latvia the
only real economical centre is Riga. Al these particularities influence the structure of the local fashion
retail market.

The Apranga Group is a distinct leader of clothing retail in Lithuania occupying around 30% of the retail
clothing market. At the beginning of 2003, the company started its activity abroad. The first store
abroad was opened in Riga, the capital of Latvia. In 2004, the first store was opened in Tallinn, the
capital of Estonia. Within 3 years of activity in Latvia the Apranga Group became one of the leading
clothing retail companies in Latvian market.

The Company Lelija is the biggest garment manufacturer in Lithuania, producing annually around
1.5 million outerwear textile clothing for men, women and children, from which about 80% are
exported to Western European and Scandinavian countries. Suits, jackets, blazers, trousers, coats,
raincoats, skirts, shirts, blouses, vests, dresses and uniforms constitute the major assortment of the
company and are produced in specialized production lines.
The main enterprise is located in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, where there are samples making,
CAD (designing), CAM (cutting) departments and 9 specialized sewing workshops. The company has
5 affiliates in others cities in Lithuania.

Founded in 1931, AB Audimas produced sportswear. At the moment, Audimas is the leading brand of
clothing for active leisure and sports in Lithuania with more than 30% market share and an average of
35 percent a year growing income.
Audimas together with several famous Lithuanian and foreign designers, on the basis of professional
Europe fashion agencies suggestions and recommendations, creates and submits to the market
4 collections a year. Trading occurs in the retail network and in cooperation with the wholesale trading
partners.
Audimas sells about 30-40% of its production in Lithuania, the remaining part is produced under other
brand names such as: Assos, Lucas Hugh, Rapha and is exported to Sweden, Germany, France, Italy,

Baltika Lithuania is part of the Baltika Group, the largest trans-national clothing producer and trader in

Baltika employs a vertically integrated business model which means that the Group controls all stages

Additionally, Armitana holds the franchises to a number of the leading global brands, including GEOX,
BALDININI and HÖGL.
Since its foundation the company has expanded its market and today stores can be found not only in
Lithuania, but also in the neighbour’s states of Latvia and Estonia. In Lithuania stores include ŽYGIO
BATAI, STEP TOP, SALAMANDER, TOPS, BALDININI, GEOX and HÖGL and also some footwear outlets -

Burda Moden Salonas’ LLC was established in 1991. The company began its operations by distributing
press, (‘Verlag Aenne Burda’ group publications).
As the consumers’ interest rapidly increased, the range of products they offered grew also: sewing
machines, accessories, sewing and knitting yarns, and needlework tools were now available through
the publications.
During this era, they sold the well-recognized brands: Pfaff German firms, Madeira, Coats Mez,
Zweigart & Sawitzki, YKK, the Swedish company Husqvarna Viking, English Adjustoform Products
Limited Company, and many others.
In 2005, they shifted the focus to retail clothing and footwear.
Burda opened their first franchise store, Marc O’Polo (Germany), and 2 Shoe multi-brand stores called
Let’s Go. This was the Baltic flagship location for Marc O’Polo. The following year, they opened another
first-timer in the Baltics, Tommy Hilfiger (Europa). This is a famous and powerful fashion label
worldwide. Succeeding, they opened another premium brand store, Gant (Sweden) in 2007. In the next

The Burda Moden Salonas gained its respect in the Baltics through ventures with premium retail

Now JSC Burda moden salonas has 67 employees.

Nothing fancy here, but a lot of Lithuanians do buy their clothing in markets and second-hand clothing
stores. “Humana People to People Baltic” was founded in the beginning of 1998. The first HUMANA
store in Lithuania was founded in May 1998. Afterwards every year several new stores were opened.
Humana People to People Baltic (HPPB) Sorting Centre was opened in the autumn, 1998. At the
moment there are 59 HUMANA stores in Lithuania.

Humana claims to be different from other second-hand shops in the constantly renewable assortment
of goods. The assortment is renewed every 5 weeks and every week there are sales actions. The shops
sell clothes for men, women and children, as well as footwear, accessories and home textile products.
The salespeople are trained to be friendly and help out the customers. The shops do not have a second-
hand look but have a friendly and professional look.

H&M - www.hm.com
The collections of H&M include everything from arty collections to quintessential basics and functional
sportswear – for women, men, teenagers and children, and for every season or occasion. In addition
to clothes, shoes, bags, jewellery, make up and underwear there is also H&M Home – fashionable
interiors for children and adults.
There are H&M stores in 59 markets worldwide, and online shopping in 21 countries.
H&M Hennes & Mauritz AB comprises six independent brands: H&M, COS, Monki, Weekday, Cheap
Monday and & Other Stories.
H&M opened a network of stores in Latvia in 2012. H&M began activities in Lithuania and Estonia in
2013.
At the moment H&M controls 7 stores in Lithuania, 6 stores in Latvia and 6 stores in Estonia.
H&M sales including VAT were 14.57 million EUR in Latvia, 4.83 million EUR in Estonia in 2013. H&M
sales including VAT were 23.2 million EUR in Lithuania in 2014.

Market Place
Some sources claim that Lithuanians most often buy clothes at market places and spend less than
16 euro per month on clothes. These are the results of a poll conducted by the Spinter Pollster. Only
4% spends 29 to 87 euro per month on clothes and a mere 1% say they can afford to spend more than
87 euro per month on clothes. Women, young people and residents of Vilnius spend larger sums on
clothes as compared to other groups of the respondents.
Most of the time Lithuanian residents buy clothes at the market place (32%) and at clothes stores
(31%). About 17% buy second-hand clothes.
Residents of mayor cities, people on higher income and young people more often purchase clothes at
stores whereas residents of smaller towns and rural areas buy them at the market. Women and the
respondents residing in smaller towns tend to buy second-hand clothes.
The female respondents, residents of cities as well as middle-aged persons prefer clothes made to
order (which is still not expensive in Lithuania).
The majority of respondents are satisfied with the clothes supplies in Lithuania, whereas 21% of those
polled (especially women and young people) are not satisfied at all.

In 2015 retail grows, but clothing trade is decreasing in Lithuania. This decrease is, among other, caused
by customers from Russia, Byelorussia who visit Lithuania less than before and buy less clothes.

Biggest players in Latvia
The retail market for clothing and shoes in Latvia is in the hands of a few big companies and the same
type of stores can be found in every shopping centre. The market is quite similar to the markets in
Lithuania and Estonia.
Evermen - www.evermen.lv
The history of the company started in 1998. That was the day the first store “PlusB” on Terbatas Street
33/35 in Riga was opened. The third Plus B store in Riga was opened on Kr. Barona Street 25. The
opening was on the 2nd of April of 1999. The fourth PlusB store was opened in Saldus which is a small
Latvian town.
Another brand development was started with the EVERMEN store opening. The event took place on
the 6th of June 1998 in Riga, Audeju Street 10. Now the chain became wider and there are EVERMEN
stores in shopping center Mols, Domina and Alfa. There is also an EVERMEN store on Elizabetes str. 67.
This shop is one of the biggest in the chain.
The style from Evermen is elegant classical and casual wear for confident men who appreciate quality
and want to look respectable. In the store chain Evermen you will find classical suits, shirts, ties, jackets
and trousers, sweaters, T-shirts, outerwear for all seasons and accessories to it: hats, scarves, gloves.
The company also offers clothing of non-standard sizes. Currently the company has five shopping
centres.
Apranga - www.apranga.lt
Lithuania’s largest clothing retail chain Apranga has 45 shops in Latvia.
Competitors on the Latvian market are MOS and the Baltika Group.
Apranga is one of the rare companies that has almost no shops in big shopping malls, as they think that
there are no good shopping malls in Latvia. Their fierce competitor MOS also has shops in the nearby

Brivibas shopping street. In this way Terbatas and Brivibas Street are gradually turned into real
shopping streets which is also a positive evolution.
A new shopping network has started to develop in spring 2013 in Lithuania and Latvia – Desigual shops
of a Spanish trademark.
In January-July 2015, the retail turnover of the Apranga Group in Lithuania increased 9.5% year-to-
year, in Latvia 4.8% and in Estonia 22.1%.
Currently the Apranga Group operates a chain of 167 stores (99 in Lithuania, 45 in Latvia and 23 in
Estonia) covering the gross area of 77.2 thousand sq. m. which is 7.7% more than a year ago.
MOS - www.mos.lv
The MOS network was set up in 2002, but its origins go back to 1993 when they opened the Benetton
shop in Riga. MOS specializes in introducing international fashion labels and aims to set the trend
throughout Latvia. At present the network is made up of 9 shops in Latvia, 3 shops in Estonia, 2 shops
in Lithuania.
They carry over 20 world famous labels and offer a variety of network-wide benefits through the loyalty
card scheme to the most faithful customers.
Seppala (Stockmann) - www.seppala.fi
The Finnish retail group Stockmann has signed a letter of intent concerning the sale of its clothing chain
Seppala. The deal covers more than 100 Seppala outlets in Finland and Estonia.
Last year the company sales totalled EUR 92.6 million.
Seppala has/had 130 stores in Finland, 36 in the Baltic countries and 16 in Russia.
Seppälä is the biggest Finnish fashion store chain, which offers modern clothes for women, men and
children, as well as accessories in the middle price group. The collections include Seppälä design
clothes, as well as other trademark clothes.

Varner Baltija - www.varner.no
Varner Baltija closed their Latvian shops during 2014 because of the (too small) size of the Latvian
market and a reduction in the profitability of the shops.
The Norwegian-owned Varner Baltija was the owner of the clothing retail chain in Latvia consisting of
18 clothing shops -- eight Cubus, three Dressman and three Bik Bok shops, thus forming one of the
largest clothing chains in Latvia. It was solely owned by the Norwegian company Varner Tekstil.

ARMITANA SIA was established in Lithuania in 1999. Presently the company is operating one of the
leading specialized footwear networks and owns footwear stores such as SALAMANDER, TOPS, Step
TOP, GEOX, RENO and ZB SHOES networks in Latvia.
Bata
Bata (shoes) has three stores in supermarkets at the moment: Domina Shopping (Ieriķu Street 3, Riga),
TC Riga Plaza (Mukusalas Street 71, Riga).

Stock Stores
Although international brands more and more get a foothold in Latvia, it cannot be denied that the
living standard in Latvia is still lower than in Western Europe. Therefore the Stock Stores (selling end
of season clothing and second brands) are getting more popular.
For example in the shopping centre Origo there has been a whole floor reserved for professional Stock
stores. ‘Brand Stock’, one of them, is selling following brands: 686, F2, Santa Cruz, Fanatic, Quiksilver,
DC, Fox, Osiris, DVS, Orchid, Circa and Aeon.
Other Stock Stores in Riga include: Blow, Absinte, Discount Centres and others. The downside is that
these are all individual projects.

Founded in 1992, GALA Company is a private enterprise which specializes in the trade and processing
of second hand clothing and footwear.
The firm has its own developed infrastructure: office, enterprise of textile sorting and wholesale stores.
For many years the partners of GALA have been the biggest enterprises of textile gathering and
processing in Europe: Switzerland, UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and others. At the moment
GALA firmly keeps the position of the leader in Latvian market (33% of the market share). The average
monthly sale in Latvia is nearly 150 tons of second hand clothing and footwear. The goods presented
by GALA Company have proved themselves of good reputation at both the local and Russian market.
A branch of the company is located in Daugavpils (one of the largest cities in East Latvia - at the border
with Russia).
Clients of the company are the owners of specialized shop nets as well as the owners of small second
hand shops.

Biggest players in Estonia

This Estonian factory, specialized in shirts and blouses, has an extensive chain of shops in Estonia.
Sangar owns 7 shops in Estonia (spread all over the country).
Sangar announced that by buying the Swedish company Oscar and brand, it expands into new markets,
where there are much bigger opportunities to promote the Sangar trademark and to sell products.
Sangar had a turnover of EUR 4.3 million in 2014, Oscar of Sweden 4.5 million. The acquired company
owns trademarks Oscar of Sweden and 1949. Sangar's sub-brands are: Sangar Executive, Sangar City
and Optimist.

AS Fifaa was founded in 1993. There are two subsidiaries: Subsidiary SIA Fifaa in Latvia and UAB Fifaa
Baltic in Lithuania. Fifaa has a total of 102 permanent employees in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. To
cover the T-shirt needs, a chain of T-shirt shops has been created in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
There are 7 shops in Estonia, 5 shops in Riga (Latvia) and
6 shops in Lithuania, all specialising in T-shirts.
