Fleas are small, wingless insects that feed on the blood of animals and people. There are several different species of fleas. Most flea problems are caused by the cat flea, species Ctenocephalides felis. Fleas can be a significant problem for pet owners; however, areas can have fleas even when there are no pets around. Other animals such as mice, rats, bats, squirrels, and raccoons can also be a source of these insects. Flea bites are irritating to pets and humans, resulting in allergic responses such as a rash and other sensitivity reactions. These insects are also capable of transmitting several diseases.

Fleas pass through a life cycle consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Completion of the life cycle varies from 2 weeks to 8 months depending on the species, temperature, humidity, and food source. Although adult fleas can jump, they usually don’t travel far without a host, preferring to jump on a passing animal. Fleas do not survive well outdoors in hot, sunny lawns. They prefer moist, shaded spots particularly near pet resting areas.

Consider an integrated flea control program including good sanitation and an insecticide spray treatment.
