1 Introduction

The purpose of this document is to provide environmentally relevant information of a specific Nokia Solutions and Networks product.

This document shall not be interpreted as a specification, modification or amendment to the specification, or additional or other warranty of any kind. In case of discrepancy between this document and the Product specification or terms and conditions of the valid supply agreement between Nokia Solutions and Networks and the customer, the supply agreement and Product specification shall always prevail over this document.

1.1 Environmental benefits of Flexi Lite BTS

When designing the Nokia Solutions and Networks Flexi Lite BTS, the entire lifecycle from production to deployment to use phase to end of life has been considered. Nokia Solutions and Networks has minimized the environmental impact of the Flexi Lite BTS in all four phases.

At production and end of life, the environmental impact of the Flexi Lite BTS is minimized as hazardous substances are avoided and the total amount of raw material needed is significantly lower than that of conventional cabinet-type base stations. Nokia Solutions and Networks is committed to energy-efficient manufacturing and to full compliance to European Union’s directives on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).

The compact size and weight of the Flexi Lite BTS (approximately 11 kg (24.25 lb.)) has double positive impact for the deployment: First, all logistics of transporting and installing the BTS are optimized. Smaller vehicles can be used or more base stations transported in the same container.

No cranes are needed for installation. Second, owing to the modular, outdoor-capable and compact design, the Flexi Lite BTS can be deployed at sites that are optimum from the radio network planning perspective, but were unattainable with conventional cabinet-type base stations. In total, Nokia Solutions and Networks estimates that the logistics footprint is reduced by 80%.

Analysis of the CO2 footprint of the four phases revealed that the use phase is dominant. Therefore measures have been taken to extend the use phase in a CO2 neutral way. Nokia Solutions and Networks can look back on a successful track record in providing base station capability and capacity by means of software upgrades rather than hardware exchange.

The total CO2 footprint of a base station during the use phase is basically defined by the product of duration of the total use phase and the power consumption. See chapter 4.2 Product use phase CO2 footprint for more information. Leading global CSPs confirm that the Flexi Lite BTS features best-in-class power consumption that enables energy savings of up to 70% for base station sites. This is achieved by the revolutionary, modular and outdoor-capable design and the highly efficient technology within the modules, in particular in the RF Module, as the power amplifier are the part with the highest power consumption within a base station. See chapter 4.1 Product energy consumption for more information.

On base station site level, the Flexi Lite BTS enables further energy savings, as no auxiliary equipment for transport (backhaul) or air conditioning is needed.

3 Company environmental information

3.1 Nokia Solutions and Networks environmental policy

Nokia Solutions and Networks creates innovative products that improve the quality of life worldwide and maximize the benefits of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

As a global company we take our responsibility for environmental protection and resource stewardship seriously.

Sustainability is the key to securing our company’s future. Central to this thinking is meeting the demands of business in an ecologically and socially progressive manner. A demonstrated commitment to environmental issues will increase the competitive advantage of our business and our customers’ business and lay the foundation for a successful future.

Our environmental management system ensures continuous improvement of our environmental performance: we design, develop, manufacture and market our products and services in a manner that meets or exceeds applicable regulations minimizing the adverse environmental impacts.

Our management and employees act in accordance with the Nokia Solutions and Networks Environmental Policy and observe the relevant regulations. Our contractors are also required to comply with this Policy.

3.2 Life cycle thinking

The environmental goals and activities of Nokia Solutions and Networks are aimed at reducing the environmental impact of Nokia Solutions and Networks products over their entire life cycle. Life-cycle thinking is used throughout the product’s phases from raw material extraction, manufacturing operations, use phase and end-of-life practices as well as logistics. Continuous activities on these fields assure to minimize the environmental impacts of our products.

3.3 Environmental Management System (EMS)

Nokia Solutions and Networks company-wide Environmental Management Systems (EMS) is based on ISO 14001 standard. All Nokia Solutions and Networks production sites are included into Nokia Solutions and Networks ISO 14001 certificate.

Nokia Solutions and Networks also requires its suppliers, manufacturing partners and contract manufactures to have Environmental Management System.

3.4 Design for Environment

Design for Environment (DfE) means systematic integration of environmental objectives into product design. In Nokia Solutions and Networks, products are designed to be environmentally efficient by integrating several tasks to product process performing to:

minimize material and energy use

maximize reuse and recycling

maximize usage of recycled material

minimize use of materials harmful to the environment

design products to be easily or remotely maintainable or maintenance free.

DfE is an integral part of Product Process in NSN and thus considered in day-to-day decision making in Nokia Solutions and Networks.

4.3 Materials

4.3.1 Nokia Solutions and Networks Substance List

Nokia Solutions and Networks values the protection of the environment and the preservation of natural resources high on the agenda, and thus undertakes great efforts to design its products to be compatible to the global environmental requirements. As a part of this work the Nokia Solutions and Networks Substance List has been created, which is used together with suppliers as a tool in managing material and substance selection for parts and components to be included in Nokia Solutions and Networks’ products.

Based on the above, Nokia Solutions and Networks products are designed to meet, and are in compliance with relevant material and substance legal requirements applicable to Nokia Solutions and Networks’ products in the markets where the products are sold, such as but not limited to EU RoHS Directive.

Nokia Solutions and Networks Substance List has two categories of substances: the restricted substances and the monitored substances. The restricted substances are either totally forbidden in Nokia Solutions and Networks products, or restricted up to certain levels. The monitored substances are expected to be reduced or gradually phased out of Nokia Solutions and Networks products. The Substance List is not strictly limited to applicable mandatory substance legislation but includes restrictions of substances and materials beyond mandatory legislation. This enables Nokia Solutions and Networks to provide products which are ahead of minimum substance restrictions.

Nokia Solutions and Networks Substance List is subject to continuous improvement due to changes in legislation, but also due to the improvement of technologies, and knowledge about effects of substances in light of further scientific evidence. In Nokia Solutions and Networks’ own production’s ramp-up phase as well as in the

requirements to suppliers, the Nokia Solutions and Networks Substance List will be applied. Compliance with Substance List is naturally expected and required from hardware product suppliers.

6 Take-back information

Nokia Solutions and Networks customers can contract with Nokia Solutions and Networks for environmentally responsible end-of-life treatment of obsolete equipment. The purpose is to recover the material and energy content of the obsolete products and to ensure safe treatment of substances that can cause harm to people or the environment, if disposed of untreated. In a life-cycle perspective, EoL treatment can compensate for some of the environmental impacts of the earlier stages of the product’s life cycle.

Nokia Solutions and Networks Equipment Take Back Solution provides Nokia Solutions and Networks customers with an end-to-end service that includes the removal of end-of-life products from the customers' network and ensures end-of-life treatment in an environmentally responsible way. The Nokia Solutions and Networks Equipment Take Back Solution is offered in several modules representing end-to-end work flow of the process:

Removal

Collection

Recycling

Project Management

In Nokia Solutions and Networks or Other Vendor HW Replacement, that is, SWAP cases Take Back Solution brings in Collection and Recycling Service as Removal and Project Management are already included. The pricing is scalable according to the modules.

If customer chooses not to procure Nokia Solutions and Networks Equipment Take Back Solution from Nokia Solutions and Networks, customer agrees to dispose of any such equipment in a sound environmental manner, in compliance with all applicable laws.
