MEASURIIVG TIME BY THE.fUIiPrinciples Notes hy Joyce Hopeteb

The measurement of time has engaged the intellect andingenuiry of mankindl since the dau,n of civilisation. Earlymeasuring devices include shadow clocks, water clocks andsundials. The principle of the sundialwas known to the Chineseas early as 25008C, and sundials were used by the Greeks andRomans. The Sun was then, and still is, a central and significantpart of our everyday lives andi cultue - we feel better when itshines, we follow it around the globe to escape from the glloomof winter and we are becoming increasingly aware of itsdangers, as well as its benefits, now that global wamdngconcerns have become mainstream.

The dial in Old Court at Queens' College, Cambridge, is anexample of sundial arl compllete with Zodiac Signs and theirruling planets. This dial shows the ancient rulers. Unusualbecause it can also be used a moondial, the set of figures shownbelow the dial are confirmation of this and are described as oothe

hour angles throughout a lunar cycle". Ofcoutse, efiective useof the moondial option would depend on there being a fairlyfirll moon, wittr little cloud cover. Without this, all that could becertain is that it's dark and it's night-timel

Perhaps the most famous astronomical clock is the one inPrague, complete with beautifully painted Zodiac Signs andtheir associated tasks of the rnonth. On the Queens' Collegesundial, thre Sigrrs are clearly visible" and can be read off thedial by observing the position ofthe shadow ofthe ball on thegreen clrves. When the days are lengtherdng you have to lookfrom the shadow, behveen lhe curves, to the right side of thedial to discover whictr Sigtt the Sun is modng through; whendays are shortening, look to the Sigtts on the left. It's interesting

to note that a horizontal line cuts across the face ofth€ dialfrom Aries to Libra, marking the Vernal and AutumnalEquinoxes.

Historic and elegant as this dial may be (the original datesfrom 1538 and has been repainted 5 tirnes)" the mostinteresting part of its story is that it would have been usedmainly to check the meclhanical ctrock that is situateddirectly above it. Just goes to show that you can't better theSunl

Geraldine Daryton, who has been ourrepresentative on the Advisory Panel forAstrological Education (APAE), will also bestanding down. Geraldine's role has been toattend APAE meetings in London which takeplace 3 to 4 times ayear. API (tlK) hasbeen amember of APAE since the mid-1980's,meeting regularly with representatives of othermernber astrological schools based in the UK.The schools seek to cooperate in maintaininghigh standards in asrological education and topromote the study of astrology. Our warmestthanks to Geraldine for getting involved, attending the meetings and keeping us updatedand informed on APAE issues.

At the request of Conjunaion Geraldine urites about the role of APAE

The Advisory Panel on Astrological Educationby Geraldine Dayton

In lr,{arch 2003, I took over from Sue Cameron as API UK's representative on TheAdvisory Fanel on Astrological Education (APAE). The APAE, whose memberscome from the Major Aslrological Organisations and Teaching afid Associatebodies in the lJK, was formed in 1980 and is an independent non'profit makingbody.

The APAE meets several times a year to discuss any issues pertaining to theastological comrnunity. Although the members have, very djfferent astrologicalapproaches, we work together towards a consensus of opinion.

An imporant role of the APAE is to monitor and maintain the standards ofteaching of astrology in the United Kingdom. The APAE has agreed on thecriteria which need to be met before Astrological Organisations' Courses can beregistered. As API UK has been able to meet these, our Courses have beenregistered with the APAE.

llaving such standards has enabled astrology to be accepted into higher educationin the tlK via the Sophia Project. The role of a representative of API UK is toensure that our voice is heard and that we continue to have our place in theastrological community.

For more information about the APAE and also the Sophia Project, please have alook at their website: www.apae.org.uk

My Blog Siteby JoYce HoPex'ell

IVe started a blog at lrttp://jo]cehopervell.blosspot.com and am using it, hopefully,as another way of getting astrological psychology & API(LK) picked up by searchengines. IVe linked it into the school's web site, and Jane Brook's has put a link infrom my radio page on the site, and I'm negotiating with Radio Stoke to link it inwith their site as well, all of which will help raise our profile with search engines.

My intention is to include charts of people who are topical (so far, Tessa Jowell,Tony Blair & H.M.Queen (80tr'birthday), isolating one thing from each chart anddiscussing this quite briefly. IVe also given a brief definition of what astrologicalpsychology is, & have said something about my chart too.

The address is http://iovcehopervell.blogspot.com and you can go there & add yourown comments if you like, but please not rude ones!l

A JT.]PITER LEARNING CYCILE by Helen Lambert My nodal axis across the I/7 providesthe counterbalance to the verticalshaping and it's taken me a long time torealise that the most meaningfulgrowing I do is with and through otherpeople.

My planets are quite evenly distributedbetween the hemispheres but there is aquite distinct qrrladrant emphasis with apolarity between impulse and thinking, between what I want and what I know'my unconscious imPulses and mYconscious thoughts.

The first quadrant is associated with theelement of fire, the third with air. In mydynamic calculations my score for air ishigh at plus 44, indicating that thiselement is sonrrething the world wantsand expects from me. Meanwhile mYscore for fire, the elernent of the 1"quadrant, is minus 39. So this is not aside of me that the world is muchinterested in which has lead toconsiderable frustration for me in thepast. However now I have recognisedthis I have begun to be able to use tlntenergy for myself, to support mY owngrowth and develoPment and notexp€c,t instant recognit ion orappreciation of it from the worldoutside.

As you'd guess from mY chart imagethe efficienry triangle has been thedominant aspect pattern for most of mylife, In many ways this "achievement"triangle is quite dysfunctional. The allred aspects have a cardinal motivationbut two of the Planets involved are"soft" planets - Moon and NePtune'Their motivation is for contact ratherthan action.

Although the Sun is involved as I'vesaid earlier it's not very well-placed forexternal action, so the energy build upin the opposition to feed the planets onthe apex isn't all tat it might be. Thatleaves Mars, which loves being in anachievoment figure. However Mars isclosely conjunct the Moo& less thanhalf a degree and for a long time tltatcombination was frustrating for mYMars and scary for mY Moon. However, once I recognised that, I wasable to start working to distinguish theenergies then ffy to combine them in arnore corntructive way.

It took me 12 years to comPlete theHuber diploma course, a full JuPitercycle. What follows are extractsfrom my presentation for the Swissdiploma which summarise somo ofwhat I leamed during that cYcle.

I remember when I first saw mY chartdrawn up in Huber stYle thinking -"that looks like my life - it looks hardl"

The first chart image I saw was of across4ow with an arrow (poinling toMoon/Ivlars) pulled back (by Saturn) tothe poitnt of greatest tension, read! toshoot out into the environmerft throughthe 7e house. Whilst the image couldbe seen as quite an agglessive orassertive one it's alwaYs felt to memore of a defensive Posfure, kingconstantly at the ready to defend myselfin what I perceive t0 be a dangerousworld. Equally it's given me a sense ofbeing able to look after myself, beingarmed for the struggle.

When I did AsrologY I at Face to Faceone of the other PeoPle in mY grouPlooked at my chart and said what theysaw was an old fashioned bonnet (backof the lfread Moon/Mars, ribbon comingdown to JupiterAy'emrs semi-sextileSun), facing towards the l-side of thechart.

That was a real revelation for me - achart image the exact opposite of theone I had, an image where the face' hadbeen turned against the world ratherthan being forced to confront it. Iassociate this image with a sense of,where I've come fiom. MY North Nodeis in the ?e house, which means mYSouth Node, the Place I feelcomfortable, is in the first house -

API (UK) ConJunction No. 40 Page No.4

being independent and self-sufficient.The Sabian symbol for the degreewhere my South Node sits is "Awoman enters a convent", very muchthe same as the bonnet of a womanturning her back on the world.

t - r

Helen - NodalChan

As you can see from mY nodal chartthis very much links with past liveswhere I have experience of energyflowing to the l-side, particularly the12ft house. You can also see that mYSunr has stayed in the same house, the3'd house, in this incarnationindicaling that I have work to do onmaking a signi f icant steP indeveloping my owlr sense of identityand will. As my Sun is very strong bYsigrr but close to the low point of the3'd house at the bottom of the chartI've come to realise that thedwelopment needs to be internal forme rather than something I need toexpress out in the wodd.

You can see my chart is very short ofblue, the only blue aspects I have aretrines. However I do have a blue/green star in the instinct quadrantwhich feels like the bolthole I escapeto when I've had enough of all thatred activity - when I'm the woman inthe bonnet!

Thanldrlly, I thinb I have a mainlYmutable aspect structure, 3 triangles, plus 3 linear aspects all of which I seeas helpfirl in various ways. And thisinner nrrotivation to leam is enhancedby having my crossing Points on the3/9 axis, I know that a major Part ofdeveloping a sense of balance andequilibrium in my life is throughsearching for my own wisdom andbeliefs. paSe

Page 5: flffi - The Astrological Psychology Websiteastrologicalpsychology.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/cj... · 2014. 5. 9. · of the moondial option would depend on there being a fairly

The efficiency triangle is a mutableshape full of cardinal energy operatingthrough planets in fixed sigts. All theplanets involved are past the low pointsof their houses and are thereforepsychologically in the next house - soit's as if there are 2 lots of work to do,3l9ta7 and4l l0 to 8!! .

In "Aspect Pattern Astrology'' theHubers write: " A person with a redachievement triangle should completeher work quickly and zuccessfully, sothat she can rest again afterwards." Inthe past I have found that there wasrarely enough energy to work'quicklyand successfully" and my Saturn wasvery critical of the failings of theefforts. After all I've said about the mixof energies in the effrciency triangle it'simportant to note that Saturn, whichlinks to it, is a fixed Planet, in a fixedsigrr arnd well positioned in a fixedhouse.

In my House Chart the searching figureand small learning triangle in my natalchart disappear completely but theefficiency triangle mutates into anambivalence triangle, so what the worldwants me to present are blue aspectsand a blue Moon Mars conjunction. Ihad lots of messages in my childhoodabout putting a good face on things, notletting people see when they'd upsetme. One of my Mum's most usedexpressions was, and still is "you canalways think what you like" the clearimplication being that it is generallybest not to express it!

However now I've lived in my natalchart I've come to recognise that thereare quite a few helpfirl things in mYhouse chart which I can "own" and useto relieve some of the tension in mynatal chart. The North Node isintegrated into a small leaming trianglewith Uranus and Mercury which seemsto me, to keep the benefits of theseparate UranuJMercury square butmake iit more flexible and responsive. Ilike the fact that in my house chartPluto links in to that triangle viaMercury as I feel Mercury and Uranuscope better with the Pluto energy thanmy low point Sun and, particularly mystressed Venus.

For me the most important thing in myfamily model is that my Moon is thehighest of the 3 ego planets. I verymuch felt that I had to look after myself

and also that there were highexpectations of me. When I left homeI moved out of my house chart andinto my natal chart with a vengeance!I had a wonderfirl dream just before Ileft home. I was a tiger who'd beenkept in a circus and escaped, Iexperienced the feeling of power inrunnirag, my muscles rippling. Therewere lots of people running alongbehind me shouting, trying to catchme but I just sped away, nwer in anYdoubt I could easily outrun them. Inretrospect I can see that as well asexperiencing a much redder MoonMars I also chose to make use of theone-way aspect between Moon andSaturn to cut off the connection.

In one, of rny fair$ early assignmentsI was describing the inconsistentsense of self I had and I wrote tlnt Ifelit like a kaleidoscope "beautiful andinteresting but always changing shapewithin a confined space". It was likemy mutable stnping was taking meround and round but nothingpeflrunent was being built becausethere was no clear direction, I wasn'texercising my will.

I understarnd now that wen thoughmy Moon Mars, srrpported by Satur&can do a good impersonation of willthrough demonstrating passion anddrive I do needl to take control, through dweloping my Sun andprovide clear direction of all thatenergr. My Sun is the planet whichconnects all 3 of my mutable figuresand if it is strong all that learning andeffort can be integrated and helPdwelop a cohesive whole, rather thanbeing fragmented and pulling indifferent directions.

Confessions of u Failed Pilgrint

Joyce Hopewelll

It seemed a good idea, at the time, andin truth I was very keen on it. For mY60th birthday we would travel throughFrance and northern SPain on one ofthe pilgrim routes whiich lead toSantiago de Compostela, then catch theferry back to England from Santander.Barry, my husband, had done this as asolo trip 4 years before and hisphotographs of the sacred and spiritualplaces he'd visited had inspired me tosee them too. We had already travelledpart of the route he took throughFrance, as far as the SEanish border;this tlne we would go all the way' Histrip began at Yezelay in BurgundY;mine would begin at Le Fuy-en-Velayin the Auvergne.

We were to travel in our motorcaravan- our home on wheels - along with ourScottie dog. My 4th House needswould be catered for, together with myMutable chart shaping/motivation andlinear red aspects which like to moveon after a few days here, a few daYsthere, in order to see something ilew'And my 12th House Saturn was quietlydrooling at the thought of thespectacular churches, cathedrals andmonasteries to be visited along theroute. I u'ould follow the palh of thepilgrims as my Age Point entered thellth House and was conjunct Uranus. This was exciting stuff'! I would bespiritually uPlifled. What couldpossibly go wrong?

the way to Le Puy I was troubled bYsinus probletns. aching ears and thelabyrinthitis which I get frorn time totime, and which didn't go awaY(labyrinthitis is a viral ear infection;the symptoms are leeling ruluseous.drunk and dizzy without havingtouched a drop of alcohol). I was alsorecovering ftom osteopathy to correctmy mis-aligned pelvis, and had beenadvised not to make anY repetitivemovements, like climbing ladders. But energy follows thought, mindtriumphs over matter and so it wasthat my Sun/will won and I carefullyclimbed the 268 steps to visit thechapel.

The simplicity, peace, energY andYery special atmosphere of thisancient chapel made the climbworthwhile, as did the view from thetop - m,!'pilgrimage had started! Whatwould I leam from this joumeY? WithUranus at the portal of the llthHouse, what u'ould I discover about itand myselfl Would my world belurned upside dorvn. mY securitYchzrllenged, or would I have a suddenand spectacular insighl? Dominant Learting triangleTravelling through France was easy. The places we plarxred to visit wereall open. France is more dog-friendlythan the UK, so we tvere able to eatout with dog. The weatler improved. My Dominant Learning trianglekicked into action: Mercury togetherwith my DC Moon practised sPeakingin French at every opportunity.....butI kept pondering on the significanceof that upcoming conjunction toUranus in its position as start and endplanet in my direct Leaming tniangle. The last time my Age Point had met aplanet directly was when I was 38,and it was on my Moon. This wasrvhen I started to studY astrologYseriously. The Hubers say "The egoaligns itself to the trine, whichpossesses experience, cognition andperspective". astrological understanding, but now Ifelt uneasy, unsettled, vaguelYapprehensive, and decidedly unwellmost of the time. As befits Uranus, mynormal feelings of stabiliq' and securifwere ulder threat.

We travelled across the ffrendes andinto Spain. It was misty, raining andchilly. At the top of the Pass westopped to see the pilgrim chapel atRoncewalles. but it waslocked and allI could do was peep through thewindows. I felt sorry for any pilgrimstravelling on foot who had trudged tothe top of the pass to visit the chapeland take shelter from the rain, only tofind it closed.

This somehow set the scene for Spain.Closed churches, chaPels andmonasteries seemed the norm. True, they were not closed all the time butSpain has very long midday breaks, andarriving somewhere at 2 Prry you mayfind it closed, not to open again until 4pm or even later. In the town of Estella, where we arrived at midday for a lookround followed by what we hoPedwould be a leisurely lunclr, we had towait until 7.L5 pm for the church andcloisters to open. i have a verY redchart and like to be doing something, Iget impatient, so kicking nLY heelswaiting around for a pilgrim church toopen was definitely not on my agendal

Barry, whose chart has far more bluethan mine, took this in his stride, explaining to me that "this is rvhat it'slike" on the pilgrim route in Spain. Youtum up, and if the church or chaPel islocked, then yo'u wait, get a coffee, gofor a meal, and eventually get to seewhat you came there for. So we went tofind somewhere to eat. But dog waswith us, and Spain is not dog-friendlyat all. Dogs are not allowed inrestaurants, and no, theY would notserve us a rneal outside urder theumbrellas if we sat there with him ' wecould only have food if we went inside, dogless. We eventually found a Pubthat would sen'e us if we sat outside -

bizarrely for this part of Spain, it wasanI r i shpub. . . . . . .

Highs, Lows and an OddityOver the nert few days I began to feelas if Spain was rejecting me, and that Iwas in the wrong Place altogether. There were highs and lows. I witnesseda dog owner being unspeakabll' cruel to

his animal when disciplining him, watched a flock of 12 griffon urlturesrise up over a mountain idge to lazilyride the thermals, was given animpromptu personal guided tour of theMonastery of Irache by the churchorganist who spoke excellent English, and had my passport number taken onentering the cathedral and museum ofSanto Domingo de la Calzada. When Iasked why, I was told "in case you stealan)thind'! In the cathedral, the clothedstatue of the Virgin Mary was havingher dress changed by the volunteerladies working there. Being curious, Iloitered to watch...discreetly! Seeingbeneath the statue's clothing had aScorpionic/Plutonic and voyeuristicflavour. Below the waist was nothingbut a frame in the shape of a long, wideskirt and as her wig was being changedtoo, the statue was bald.

By now I wanted out of Spain. I feltuncomfortable, insecure and still ill-at-ease. The dog was a handicap, ln everytown there was an unuly Spanish muttrunning loose with no owner in sight, and I didn't relish our dog beingchallenged in a fight. I was frustratedwith finding so'many places along theroute closed, with waiting for them toopen, with knowing that we had topress on and on in order to get toCompostela, and then travel back alongthe northern coast to catch the boat atSantanrder. Had we really allowedenough time for all this? Was this whatI wanted for a special birthday trip?Trapped in the suess zone before thellth cusp, and feeling if I was caringless and less about being a pilgrim andannounced that I wanted to change ourplans, turn around, go back to F'ranceand find a nice spot by the sea to relaxin instead. I needed some Fixiry!

It was at this point tlnt Barry startedacting very strangely. Displayingwaming signs of his Mars in Scorpiosquare Pluto on the AC, he suggestedthat it would be a good idea to go as faras Burgos, our next stop, and thendecide what to do. He has a Fixedcharl, likes to stick to rvhat's planned,so I backed down and agreed. Wearrived in Burgos, installed the van at apleasalrt campsite and walked along theriver and into the town. Burgos is onthe edge of Spain's high meseta.Although it was brillianlly surny withfantastically blue skies showing off theintricately carved white stone spires of

the cathedral, it was cold. And it was2 days before my birthday, 2 daysbefore the 1 lth cusp and 2 days beforemy eyeball-eyeball with Uranus. Bythis time I'd given up wondering whatit would all be about. I no longercared. I was gnrmpy and rather fed up.

Uranian Moment

One of thefunctions ofUranus is to

q shock us and,' , shake us out of

our present state','and into a new

-..way of seeing.-,. things, or into a

new way ofbeing, Uranus isassociated with

the principles of Maintenance andChange. Life is maintained on a stableand steady basis, then under theinfluence of Uranus, things get turnedupside down, viewed in new \ryays andchanged, making room for a differentand often more creative and positiveperspective. A period of adaptationthen follorvs while a new, stable stateis established. We feel very safe livingat the Saturnian level; when Uranuscomes along and stirs things up lifecan be unsettliing and uncomfortablefor a while. That's how it was for me -Saturn was being challlenged. I wasn'twell, was failing as a pilgrim becauseI couldn't hack it and felt guilty aboutit, and I wished I was anywhere elsebut where I was right now.

In Burgos we went into the mainsquare and Barry suggssted I stand infront of the cathedral for a photo. Ashe backed away to take the shot, myUranian moment arrived. Orn twoadult children arnd their partnerssuddenly materialised in the square"walked towards me, and one afteranother, hugged me and told methey'd come to join me for my specialb i r t h d a y . S h o c k e d i s a nunderstatement - for the first time inmy life I experienced beingspeechless, I cried tears ofjoy and mylegs were wobbly for a good hour! Sothis was why Barry insisted we carryon to Burgos! This, it transpired, hadbeen plarned and plotted for monthsand was the best birthday present Icould ever have imagined in my

wildest dreams. This was really wlrntthe journey was about, and yes....itwas Uranus smff alright! There werejokes about "not doing this sort ofthing too often.....she's getting on a bitnorv.....better be careful, she can't takethe shock!" etc. There was more tocome too! I was whisked off to anearby 5 star hotel where we all stayedfor the weekend (yes, even the dogwho had been negotiated for).

We travelled around in a large peoplecarier they had hired at the airport andwent to other nearby places on thepilgrim route. It was good to visit thesebut I felt my personal pilgrimage hadended in Burgos. I didn't need tocomplete the conventional joumey toCompostela because I'd symbolicallycompleted the journey around myDominant Learning triangle when I hadmy Uranian experience in Burgos.Even though I didn't enjoy it at thetime I can now stand back from thisperiod of my life and understand moreabout which direction I'm heading in.

The Hubers call the direct DominantLearning triangle a "CognitionTriangle", saying that "it provides thenecessary insight when crises appear".

They also say the sqrrue aspect of thispattern usually contradicts the theme ofthe trine, indicating "the direction inwhich a fansformation should takeplace and where efforts should bemade". My Uranus squares Mercury inthis aspect patten! and all now beginsto make sense. With my Age Point inGemini I knew for some time beforethe trip that I'd like to focus more onwriting, which is hard rvork, andcertainly an area of life where not only"efforts should be made", but could bemade as I pursue this path.

Becoming 60 was quite a rite ofpassage with a threshold crossed, anew life phase to lhe and experience, ajourney made and a new oile started asI embark on anolher turn around myDominant Learning triangle, workingwith Uranus and Mercury as I explorewriting. With those 1wo planetsinvolved, I strongly suspect thatastrolog.v might make good subjectmatter!

"THE PLANETS and their Psychological Meaning"- A ReviewbyRichardLtewettyn

This book from the Huber 'stablle' isthe most recent one to be translated intoEnglish and published by HopeWeil. ntis a book which goes deeply into thepsychological meaning of each planetand how this affects our personaldevelopment. The essence of this booklies in its ability to demonstrate in anunderstandable way how personalevolution takes place through theplanets.

It is not a 'cook book' in which you canlook up the meaning o{ say, one planetaspecting another. Instead it is morelike a tool box, a DIY kit or even ajigsaw puzzle. All the pieces needed foran in-depth interpretation are avaiilablehere to guide us 0n our own personaljourney, alrd to help each of us to creat€not just a two dimensional personalitybut, more importantly, a threedimensional one.

In this book the Hubers look at alldimensions of the development of thepersonality from the instinctive andimpulsive behaviour of early childhoodto the integration of the personality andthe transcendence of ego. When we areborn we lack any consciousunderstanding of who we are or how tobehave. As we grow older we begin toact witlt gleater conscious awzuenessthrough what we are taught as well asby observing the effect our behaviour

API (UK) Conjunction No, 40 Page No. 10

has on those people around us. As theyears go by and we gain in self-awareness we recognise ways inwhich we have adapted our behaviourto suit the expectations of thosepeople upon whom we relied for oursurvival. This gives us the opporhrnityto develop into autonomous, self-actualised human beings and thestrength of this book lies parfly in thefact that it shows how we can dealwith each stage of the gxowth processand move from one stage t0 the next.

Much of the Hubers' work wasinfluenced by their association u'ithR o b e r t o A s s a g i o l i a t h i sPsychosJ'nthesis Institute in Florenceas well the time' they both spentestablishing the fucarne School inGeneva. So in addition to dealingwith the realities of everyday life asaffected by the planets in the natalchart, there is a suong spiritualdimension to their work. In thirs bookthe Hubers' show how self-awarenessand transformation can be achiwedthrough an wrderstanding of theplanets.

Each planet is discussed in detail fromthe Tool planets t Y9d4l throughthe Ego planets tt )Ol to theTranspersonal planets (UVY) and thebook sXrows how each one functions atdifferent levels oI consciousness. There are three levels of growth fromthe 'Asleep' stage where the planetaryenergy runs us, through the'Awakening' stage where rve begin tounderstand how this can inhibit us. tothe 'Awake' stage where we can makeuse of planetary energies in anenligfilened way. And it's usuallysome kind of life crisis that awakes usto the fact that the level at which weare living life no loarger serves us veryrvell.

The ways in which the tool planetswilll function will depend to a greatextent on our ego awaren€ss, the egostructure being not unlike themarnagement lwel of the personality, consisting of Mind (O ), feelings ( ))and Physicat ft1 ttre part of thepersonality concemed with structureand reality. So developrnent ofthe egoplays a major part in the development

of the personality as a whole and it isthese three planets which are exploredin a very comprehensive mafller inr thisbook. Because of this it is possible onlyto illustrate this process of dwelopmentvery briefly. If we take one exampleand look at the planet Saturn which hasto do with survival and our physicalneeds we can see that at the first levelwe are ruled by survival needs with noawareness of any spiritual values. Weare trapped by dependence, inertia andthe fear of taking any risks. We onlyrealise how stuck we are when weencounter a crisis of loss which showsus the fragility of existence at this basiclevel. So we begin to break the boundswhich have held us captive and wemove on the Second level and begin tosearch for a different meaning to life.

There are numy uncertainties and fearsat this stage and we are likely toencounter another crisis which oftenends by letting go of many things whichhave held us back, be this a job, arelationship, or anything else which wefeel has inhibited our autonomy. Andthis takes us on to the next level wherewe learn to take responsibility forourselves and dwelop a sense of realityabout our life. At this stage wedliscover a different aspect of Saturnand can value this planet as friendrather than something to be feared.

When we have been through tlrcsestages of development at the Physical(h), Emotional ()) and ttr,e Mental (O)level and we are living our lives in afirlly conscious way then we haveachieved a state of integration of thepersonality. But that is not the end ofthe story because the book shows usthat there :!re more stages of evolutionto be gone through in order to transformthe personality still further. We findlthatwe can let go of our ego needs andexperience the trans-personal levelwhere we are able to work for the needsof humanity rather than satis$ing onlypersonal needs. At this stage in thebook Louise Huber introduces theesoteric work of Alice Bailey andexplains the Initiations wttich we needto go through to achieve transformationof each of the ego planets from thepersonal to the trarns-personal level.

Needless to say the ease or ditfficultieswhich we are likely to encounter in ourendeavours to achieve this ultimategoal are many and varied and willldepend on the make up of the natalchart. Such as the strengths andweaknesses, etc, as shown by Sign andHouse strenglhs of the planets, as wellas the way in which each is aspected. So the next section in this book looks indetail at the ego planets in particulaland the placing of Sun and Saturn inevery House and the Moon in werySigrr and shows how these positionswiill influence the process oftransformation which has beenpreviously described. The Hubersdefine a very clear energl curve in eachhouse going from outwardly verystrong at tXre cusp to a Low Point wherethe emphasis is more on inwardreflection before building up to the nextcusp. In interpreting the motivation ofeach of the ego planets this houseenergy dynamic is taken into account.

At times this book seems to betray itsprobable origin as a set of separatearticles piecedl together However, forme this in no way detracted ftonn themerit of the book and the value of thematerial therein. nt is a very readablebook, written in a marmer that is totallyinclusirve and is therefore a 'Must' forall astrologers and not just for thoseworking with the Hubers aPProach.Planets appear in every chart and thisbook shows how we can use them tofind out where we've got to in our ownlife jolrrney and, if we so choose, whatwe can do to move on to the next level.

"THE FORCE of CHARACTER" Jsrnes lrib,wt,tuIkoti,e

The later years of life have a bad Is this not starting to sound a bit likepress in the modern world" Whereas something else you know about -

in the past the aged were revered astrology, and in particularand respected, in today's youth- astrological psychology? This isoriented culture they tend to be seen essentiially descriptive; the Natal Chartas simply past it and somewhat provides some sort of map of theirrelevent. Yet we live longer and essence of an individual. The aspectlonger. Why is this, and what is the structue highnights basic motivationspurposeofsuchlonglife? at a deep level. The planets,

influenced by the sigtts, show how wePsychologist James Hillman addressessuch questions in The Force ofCharacter. He takes us through manyof the apparently negative aspects ofaging and tries to draw lessons on whywe go through these experiences. Thebody grad,\rally declines. memorybecomes unreliable, sometimes islargely losl, mental faculties may beimpaired. But this is all part of a lifeprocess that does not have to be seenas negative, There is wisdom andlearning to be gained from thesechallenges, just as with the differentchallenges of earlier life. And Hillmancharacterises th,ree stages of this laterlife process - lasting, leaving and left.

This is not the place to exalain thesestages, but the key insight Hillmanputs forward is that this is alllabout thedevelopment of character - as \4'€ getolder the inessentials are graduallystripped away and what remains is theessence of the person, the character.Character is what makes us differentfrom others, the essence of ouruniqueness and "what gives sense andpurpose to the changes ofaging".

Thirs is a dlifferent concept to'personality' or 'ego'; it is almostimpersonal. Hillman likens this to thebringing of ' fate' back intopsychology: "Psychology shom of fateis too shalllow to address its subject, the soul."

Character can inlluence events andpeople. Hilllman quotes cases wheret h e e m p h a s i s o f p a r t i c u l a rcharacteristics by a strongly developedcharacter has an unexPectedlysigrrificant effect on others. DennisSkinner, the MP for Bolsover, comesto mind! Ctraracter cannot beobjectivised; it requires descriptivelanguage to describe it - adjectivess u c h a s ' s t i n g y ' , ' s h a r p ' ,'opinionated', adverbs such as'slowly','carefirlly",'deliberately'.

most effectively operate in theenvironment represented by thehouses.

I could even suggest that the tlreecharts provide sonne sort of map ofHillman's concept of character. Andthe Life Clock identifies those times inlife that are most propitious for thedevelopment of character, forbecoming what we are in our essentialsetves.

This book is an interesting readalthough its origin as a stitchingtogether of separately written pieces issometimes apparent. You may wellleam something about aging that youdidn't know. And it's interesting tocome across the del'elopment of somenew psychological thinking that istotally consistent with the viewpointof astrologicarl psycholog,'r. Indeed,Hillman recognises the link withas0ology: "Character had [its oldest]refuge: astrology, where it still thrivestoday."

This is the last issue ofConjunction which will be editedby Richard Llewellyn. He hasdecided its time to invite someoneelse to take over and bring in somenew creative ideas. The 'New Kdon the Black' is Sara Inkster, whoRichard believes to be the perfectreplacement.

At the invitation of ConjunctionSara tells us somethins aboutherself:

*l was born and gew up in aWarwickshire village, have lived inBirminghafiL London, and Yorkshire, and now live in l\4anchester with mypartner, a publisher and editor. I lnavegrown up step-children and threegrandchildren.

I worked first in retail, sellingstationery, then toys then fashion. Thenas a lepl secretary. In the very early70's I bought my first home computerand taught myself the rudiments ofprogramming. At around the same timeI started work for a computer companyfirstly as a secretary, then in marketing, then in training. For some years Iworked as a freelance IT trainingconsultant before moving into FurtherEducation as IT Manager and lecturer. There I gained qualificatirons inrTeaching and Management"

In my late 30's I took a change ofdirection, moved to Manchester andbegan a full-time degree course inPsychology, a subject in which I thavehad a life-long interest. It was l[ere ttr,at

API (UK) Conjunction No. 40 Page No. 12

I met my partner. Umversity wentreally well and I was studl'rng for aPhD when in 2000 I became seriouslyill and Xnd to retire.

The i l lness, Systemic X,upusEr!"thamatosus, has rather colouredmy life since then. However, adecision not to work full-time hasbeen a really good one - the illnessincludes severe fatigue and jofurt painand leading a quiet, balanced life, hasbeen the key to its management. Afterworking all my life it was a challengeto slow righl down - it was not easy atfirst. I didnr't work for four years butnow am well enough rvork part-timeselling books (mostly romances) onthe internet. Working from home isideal from me because I can work tomy own pace, within my limitations, and rest whenever I need to, I alsohelp my partner at times wirth hispublishing business - t helped themto infroduce computers ten years ago,and my IT skills are still called onoccasionally. One of my areas ofexpertise was desktop publishingand word processing so I am reallylooking forward to working onConjunction.

My main love has always been booksand learning - even whilst I wasseriously illl I was studying for anembroidery qualification! I am reallyenjoying the astrology Diplomacourse but am finding it quitechallenging managing my time whilststudying from home. I have had aninterest in astrology since my teens, probably started because my rnotherwas a very keen reader of Predictionmapztnel I was studying astrologywith another distance learningorganiration when ijn my 30's, but mycareer in computing took off and Ialso found the course material ratherdaunting to be honest.

I have probably spent the first half ofmy life rushing from one thing to thenext and dweloping a career. It isquite pleasant now to sit back and bemore meditative and reflective. I lovegardening but am rather a fairweather gardener ... darnp and coldare not too good for my illness! Mymain pleasure in the garden isgrowing plants from seed, and in thesrunmer we are lucky enough to eat

"The New Kid. on the Block!" all oul own salad crops" herbs andvegetables. I also enjoy cooking(particularly cakes, I have a very sweettooth), DlY/decorating, embroidery andknirtting but have put those mostly toone side wXdlst I pursue my astrologicalstudies. I still read a gr:eat deal ... aswell as astology and psychology booksI also love historical romances forescapisrn. I have a gfowing interest inhistory andl archaeology - my favouritehistorical period is the Regency and thebeginnings of the Industrial Revolution, but I am getting an increasingfascination with mrrch earlier periods inBritish history, before the Romansinvaded.

My besetting problem is probablycuriosity - wanting to know and learnever''thing ... I have leamt over theyears to squash the 'Jack of alil trades, master of none" attitude and focusmore on less! The pleasure of reallydoing that rvhen I did my degree wasimmeasurable and taught me a greatlesson. I still get pulled to new things (Ireally want to learn paper making, having learnt the rudiments of book-binding) but am trying to put newimpulses to one side so that I canconcenfiate on the Diploma.

I am really pleased to harre found theAPI ... the course material is reallygood, the support excellent and thepeople I have met s0 far have beenlovely. I feel that it has come into mylife at absolutely the right time for me.I find the link to Psychosynthesis reallyuseful personally and it links in nicelywilh my interest in healing and therapy"It is great to be able to use myknowledge of psychology with mygrowing knowledge of astrology. Andofcourse it is the perfect excus€ to buymore books.... !"

experience, by having a go withwhatever we know or understand. Irealise now that I never will knowenough udess I broaden my mentaland communication abilities. Thediploma has been like a ticket ofconfidence and I am detennined touse it to expand my knowledge andbuilld on the firm foundation that Ihave gained from the Huber school.

So rvith both the bookshop a:nd thediplom4 I am still very much anovice, but a very gratefirl, keen andenthusiastic one!!! With my AgePoint in the l0th house the worldexpects me to be a professional. Yetin Gemini I am just learning to usemy cofirmunication skills whictU withCapricom Mercury near the 4th houselow point, I always felt were lacking.

Huber astology added oil to my veryrusty menlal muscle and fre to mySagittarius Su4 which propelled meon the path of self-awareness. Thishas helped me to build more self-confidence and courage. So with theconfidence which my diploma hasgiven rne I will continure to build upmy experimce and become a realprofessional!

An AppreciatiortTo Joyce Hopewell from Jenny pwet

I can't quite remember my first CNWworkshop - it was so long ago! Iernolled on the Foundation Course in1987, so I must have been coming toCNW meetings for close on 16 years. As I'm now only on the secondmanual of the Diploma Course myprogress has been somewhat slow tosay the least - a tortoise amongsthares! The one silver thread that haskept me connected to the course allthis time has been CNW.

The workshops have filled in the gapsthat theory does not reach. Theyprovided the firn laughter and hands-on leaming which stays with oneforever. Joyce, you have a way ofinstilling into others your ownenthusiasm for the subject - althouglryou must have taught the same topitcstime and agaln. - you always madethem sparkle fur a new way. Acting

out the part of a planet whilst tuggingon a coloured ribbon and quite oftengetting tangled was not only fun, it wasa revelation to me. I suddenly KNEWhow it felt to be Mars arguing withSatum at the end of a blue ribbon! Itwas so helpfirl to be amongst otherpeople at all stages of learning - thosebehind me made me feel quiteknowledgeable - those ahead of megave me encouragement and an idea ofwhere I was going. Without CNW Imay well have lost heart altogether, when times were tough in my life and Ifelt I was failing on the Course.

By providing us with your time, yourskills and your home, you also enabledus to bond irfo a close group, andextended Huber family, not always thesame members at the same time, butover the years we have watched eachother grow and learn, and a1l this underyour roof. Your lounge felt to me ratherlike a time capsule - away from myweryday world, on a voyage led by"captain Joyce" into outer space toexplore the solarr system.

It was always with a feeling of pleasantanticipation I rang your front door bell, knowing the warm welcome that wasinside. There were of course two othervery special crew members in thecapsule. One was the serene and everhelpful Barry who worked quietlybehind the scenes and somehow madesense and order out of the many andvaried gastronomic contributionsdeposited in anonymous plastic bags bythe participants"

I realise of course tlnt the part Barryplayed went far beyond the food, and Iwas very aware of his supportivepresence al break times when many ofus would nab him for a reassuring chat,The other crew member that you couldnot ignore was the canine keeper of thehouse, who, after an interrogation bysniff, would decide which of us wasworthy enough to have their feet sat on.

Joyce, thank you SO MUCH for givingus th€ opportunity to meet as a*familt'', thank you for helping us tolearn and guiding us through the solarsystenn. Thank you for your humour, your sparkle, your caring warmth andfriendship. Andlthank you for giving usCNW for so long.

With love, Jenny.

Taking on the bookshop and gainingthe diploma happened simultaneouslyfor me; which is very apt having theAge Point in Gemini. The bookshoph a s c e r t a i n l y e x p a n d e d m ycommunication abilities as I have beenforced to use the internet. This issomething I had available on m]compuiter but was never reallyinterested in using, which correspondswell with my old mental attitudes.Obtaining orders from all over theworld and receMng e-mails from theschool's Council has made me realisethe efficiency and growth of the school,as well as the effort other councilmembers put into sustaining it.

The bookshop is much more than nanticipated in many respects and I willdo all I can to maintain Jeremy'sexcellent structure and organisaition. Hereally is a hard act to follow, but I amfinding my own way and he, as well asother council members, are always onhand to help me out. While doing thediploma cours€ my tutor constantlyadvised me to practice on otherpeople's charts, which I was reluctant todo because I never felt I knew enough.

I feel that gaining the diploma hasgiven me permission to do charts, yet Istill feel tlut I do not know enoughllHowever, I am now doing charts andall the information I have gattrered hasstarted to click together. (Gemini 10thhouse). I often go back to the mamralsand ofcourse all the Huber books and itis as if I am beginning to learn at adeeper level. "Gosh I really understandthat now", I say to myself. So my futorwas ight, we do only learn by

"THOUGHTS OA{ TIME"Sent as a letter to Wendy OakDip.API.

"I have been thinking of time since theonset of Gregorian 2006, followed bythe Chinese doggre version. C. J. Jungwrites, "In themselves spac€ and timeccnsist of nothing. They arehlpostatized concepts born of thediscriminating activity of tie consciousmind...and are created by theintellectual needs of the obseryer."Here a psychologist gives us an insightinto a paradox which has interestedhuman beings since the origin ofconsciousness itself. Einstein grasped the relative nature oftime and space. Time can dilate orcontract depending on the location ofthe observer in space, which happensto be curved. The French philosopherHenri Bergson spoke about upure

The wise teachers from ancient Indi4Greece and China, to name a fewciviliz, ations, spoke about thetranscendence of time. The yogi dwellstri-kalatitam - beyond the three-folddivision of time. Modef' and Bruno Huber's "AmphoraModel". The deepening of learning formyself, as far as the AmPhora isconcerned, gave me a lot of food forthought about integating the EgoP l a n e t s , a n d a b o u t p e r s o n a ldevelopment.

The other event that gave me food forthought was the conference atKnutsford in June last year. All thecontributions were, very stimulating butI was especially roused by Peta High'stalk about the "Pitfalls of theConsultation'. These two separateeveflts tn:ggered questions about thereasons for people consulting anastrological pqychologist. Is it purelyout of curiosity? Are they searching forsome meaning and purpose in theirlives? FIas their urge towards personaldevelopment and growth gotsomething to do with it? Or are they

faced with challenges in their livesthart baffle them? Maybe they seektherapy?

Inwitably then I thought about theneeds of the astrological psychologist. How, if we work with clients perhapsas a consultant, do we look afterourselves and meet our needs? Whatsupport is available? For me, Peta'stalk led me to think about some formof supervision to conrrbat feelings ofisolation and uncertainty when facedwith a challenging client.

Thc Value of SultcrlisionAs a counselor, I have increasinglylearned to value supervision as ameans of looking after myself. At flrstI moaned and groaned about dippinginto rnry pocket t0 pay for this, butnow I know it is really necessary forvarious reasons. Apart from thesupport it offers me, it deepens mypractice through reflection and theongoing learning I gain.

Kccping r JournalFor many years now, I've also kept aref lect ive journal which is atremendous support comfort and helpsme to gain all sorts of insigtrts inretrospect. I love the leaming andcreativity inherent in astrology; turningback to my books is like coming homeand feels warm, safe and friendly. Ibreathe a sigh of relief and escape fromthe demands of my feelings and theneed to ground my learning.

For me" the conference in June and thesession on the Amphora reallyreinforced the tremendous potential ofastrological psychology. It has so muchto offer today with so numy peoplestruggling with all the ongoing changesand uncertainty in the world. What doyou think? Why do people consultastrologers? What are they looking for? What are the needs of the practitioner?Do clients see the consultation as somesort oftherapy?

Whnt arc .rour thoughts! I'd love tohcar from you.

There was a moment in my life, whenRichard Llewellyn and I were in theKruger National Parb a Game Iteservein South Africa. It was unbeliwably hotand I was rellaxing on my bed with theai-conditioning going full blast. Icouldn't imagine going out on into thehot sun again looking for animals. Ithad to be a fruitless trip, being 3 prn inthe afternoon, and all the animals worLrldbe having a siesta in the shade.
