I Cantate Domino

0 sing ye, 0 sing unto the Lord a new song. Let the congregation of the saints praise him. Let Israel rejoice in him that hath made him, And let all the children of Sian be joyful in their King.

Heinrich Schutz (d.1672)

Let them praise his name with timbrel and harp and with dance. Let them sing praises unto him.

This jubilant work in four voices based on Psalm 149 (1-3) is from the Cantiones Sacrae of 1625, an imposing collection of Latin motets by this Baroque genius. A brilliant effect is created by the intertwined triadic lines which resemble trumpet flourishes. Schutz is generally considered the most important German composer before J. S. Bach.

Ftirchte dich nicht (Motet IV) . Be not afraid for I am here, fear thou not, for I am thy God. I strengthen thee, I give thee support, I will bear thee up by the mighty right hand of my righteousness. Be not afraid, I am He who has redeemed thee, 'tis I who by thy name have thee, thou art mine. (Chorale) Lord, my shepherd, fount of gladness, Thou art mine, I am thine; naught can ever part us. I am thine, my all thou gave me. Thou hast died, crucified, on the cross to save me. In my heart of hearts I hold thee. Night and day, light my way in thine arms enfold me. Soon in heaven may I face thee, where in love, there above I at last embrace thee. Be not afraid. thou art mine .

Johann Sebastian Bach (d.1750)

It is possible that this double·choir motet was composed for the funeral of Frau Winkler, wife of the Deputy Mayor of Leipzig in 1726. The text is taken from the Prophet Isaiah and, although composed as a work of comfort and consolation, it is an animated and picturesque vocal creation. The second half of the motet is in four"parts and utilizes the chorale melody by Johann G. Ebeling which was written for Paul Gerhardt's hymn, "Why should cross and trial grieve me?" Bach uses the 11th and 12th stanzas. In the four-measure coda at the conclusion, Bach conceals his signature by having the first-choir basses sing the notes g- f*- a ·_ glf', a transposition of B-A-C-H.

The Music Department at North Dakota State University is a part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The faculty is comprised of nine members who serve approximately 70 music majors. II Der Abend ( op. 64)

Sink , radiant God: the flowers thirst for dew, and men are weary. Slowly the horses of t he sun move downward with the chario t. Loo k who calls from the crystal ocean! Knows she thy heart ? More quickly fly the horses: Thetis, the godlike, beckons. Swiftly the driver springs from the chariot to her arms; Cupid seizes t he reins; quiet, the horses stop and drink of the cooling waters. In the heavens above with soft steps comes fragrant night , close foll owed by sweet love. Rest and love! Phoebus, the lover , rests .

Pianist: Mary Kay Pearson

Nachtens ( op. 112, no. 2). Nightly awakens the evil ghostly spirits, taunting your soul to madness. Nightly in the garden, frost comes killing, and you wait in vain for the blosso ms . Nightly , care and sorrow nest themselves in your heart, and morning comes with weeping.

Johannes Brahms (d.l897)

Johannes Brahms

Der Abend is a setting of a poem by Friedrich von Schiller in which Brahms breathes a spirit of classic peace. He showed a proclivity for poetry reflecting antiquity in his more mature years. Nachtens is a moving example of Brahms at his most melancholy . The piece with its restless bass figuration in the piano is completely possessed by subjective and emotional romanticism.

III

Ecco mormorar l'onde. Hear t he murmuring waters, t he rustle in the t reetops as morning breezes stir the swaying branches. And on the verdant boughs the birds so sweetly sing airs to greet the sunrise, the eastern sky is beaming. See how the dawn arises mirrored deep in t he ocean . It brightens all the heavens; it makes pearls of the dewdrops , and decks with gold the mountains. 0 loveliest Aurora! Breezes t hy heralds are and t hou their envoy. For every sick heart you are the solace .

. Claudio Monteverdi (d.1643)

This madrigal is one of the most advanced of the seoond book by this genius of the early Baroque. It, along with other madrigals in this book, gives first evidence of this composer's keen sense of color in vocal " orchestration " . Shades of dark and light are evidenced by

his use of high and low voice combinations. Shifting registers of duetting voices in sixths and thirds also play an important part in this piece. Additional structural strength is brought about by the use of a stepwise descending bass in whole notes over the range of an octave and a fourth. The entire harmonic fabric descends ingeniously with this bass passage thereby producing a very attractive and curiously modern effect.

Ohime .... . . . . . . . Claudio Monteverdi Alas' If you so dearly love to hear tell "alas", why then condemn him who tells, "alas", to die now? For dying, once only shall I call to you a plaintive calling, a dolo rous " alas " to haunt you. But , if , my love, you wish me to win my life from you and you from me, then take the m , take all these thousand sweet "alases".

Ohime is from the fourth book of madrigals which appeared in 1603. At this time, Monteverdi was in the employ of the Duke of Mantua. The fourth book dramatically demonstrates this composer's departure from the stylized compositions of the 16th century madrigalists whose compositions sounded somewhat alike. With Monteverdi, stylistic changes were dictated by the subject matter. Ohime contains some of the new stylistic elements- declamation, motifs of passion and pain, and expressive dissonance. The passages of successive sixth chords are particularly impressive in this madrigal.

Cruda Amarilli. Cruel Amaryllis thou whose name is tender and sweet! Thou , alas, bitter , unloving , despite thy fond name. Amaryllis, more beautiful and whiter than the whitest privet's fair flower, wilder than the adder, stealthy adder , ferocious and more elusive . Lest these my words offend thee, I needs must die, my lips sealed .

. Claudio Monteverdi

Cruda Amarilli, one of Monteverdi's most renowned compositions , is from the fifth book of madrigals. It reflects the continued concern of this composer for the dramatic quality inherent in the text. Declamatory style and subtlety interwoven polyphony are underlined by expressive dissonance which aroused the wrath of critic, Artusi, in Monteverdi's time.

IV To Be Sung of a Summer Night on the Water . . . . Frederick Delius

(d.l934) Delius composed very little unaccompanied choral music, but the few pieces he wrote are miniature gems of choral writing. His is a personal coloristic style in which parallelism, chromaticism, dissonances of the 7th, 9th, and 13th with occasional added-sixth chords form a smooth, luxuriant tonal fabric. The present work is comprised of two pieces, the second employing a tenor soloist throughout. Both are wordless, a practice observed in several of his choral works. They give the impression of small-scale-tone-poems in which harmonic color is predominant. Soloist: Nick Gisi or James McLaurin

*1Though Your Strangeness Frets My Heart . . . Gordon Binkerd

(contemporary) This sensitive and beautiful setting of the Thomas Campion poem was composed expressly for the NDSU Concert Choir. It is a masterful result by a professional craftsman who at all times keeps the poetic essence foremost in mind. Mr. Binkerd 's contribution. to contemporary choral literature is very imposing. The NDSU Choir is proud to have had three of this outstanding composer's choral works dedicated to them. Soloist: Mary Kay Pearson

v *Quatre Motets .

Ubi Caritas Where charity and love are, there is God . The love of Christ has brought us together into one flock. Let us rejoice and let us be glad in that love itself. Let us fear and love the living God. And let us love from a pure heart. Amen.

Tota pulchra es Thou art all beauty, Mary, and there is no blemish of original sin in Thee. Thy garments are as white as snow, and Thy face is as the sun. Thou art the glory of Jerusalem, the joy of Israel, the source of honor to our people.

Tu es Petrus Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.

Tantum ergo So great a Sacrament, let us therefore worship with bowed heads; and let the ancient example give way to a new rite . Let faith make good the insufficiency of our senses. Praise and rejoicing; safety and honor , virtue and blessing to the Begetter and the Begotten.

Maurice Durufle (contemporary)

To him who comes from either, let there be equal praise. Amen. continued on next page

These exquisite miniatures are based upon Gregorian themes which the composer has dressed in contrapuntal textures colored by modal harmonies. Each piece emphasizes an individual musical qualityUbi Caritas is the most colorful harmonically; Tota pulchra es stresses the delicate textures of women's voices; Tu es Petrus is the most rhythmic in its irregular meters; Tantum ergo adheres most closely to the chant as the melody is stated strictly in the soprano with a rather free canonic treatment in the tenor part.

Soloist: James McLaurin

*Carols of Death .William Schuman (contemporary) The Last Invocation

The Unknown Region To All, To Each

The distinguished American composer, William Schuman, has set these texts on death by Walt Whitman with unusual sensitivity . Every nuance of the text is enhanced by subtle shadings of harmonic color and dramatic dynamic contrasts inextricably intertwined with the compelling rhythmic fabric. They are the creations of a first-rate talent and stand as an example of the best in American choral literature.

VII *Day Hours of Darkness . . . . . . . . . . . . Hanley Jackson

(contemporary) Day Hours of Darkness is a gripping composition depicting the crucifixion of Christ . The composer, a teacher at Kansas State University , states that his intent has been to depict not only the tragedy, suffering, and pathos of the final hours , but also the corruption and sadistic terror which can so easily arise in a society. The taped sounds which the composer has created add much to the total dramatic impact of this moving composition. The text is from Psalm XXI.

Readers: Brad Zietz, Mark Preston

To Everything There Is a Season . . . . . . . . . Edwin Fissinger (contemporary)

The.text, from Ecclesiastes III, is a powerful one which seems to attract composers. It is, however, a challenge to a composer because of the duality of its structure which forces him to come to grips with the problem of the many emotions depicted in the text. An a cappella version tends to emphasize this structural challenge. The present composition was co mmissioned by The Voices of Mel Olson of Omaha, Nebraska .

Soloists: Joseph Testa, tenor, Elaine Hellem, soprano, Patrice Vossen or Kristi Tollefson, mezzo-soprano

Solo quartet: To be announced Reader: Mark Preston

VIII Stjarntandningen .

Now is the wedding hour and the bride's moment. The stars burn so near that they could be plucked from the arch of the heavens and carried in the crown of the bride. Time stands still and under its spell the paths of those coming and those who are dead meet. Children of the night, you who are to be born, the points of the stars watch over your souls.

Oskar Lindberg (d.1955)

This beautifully expressive piece reflects, in a general way, the Scandinavian choral style of 35-50 years ago which tended to be somewhat Romantic in its harmonic and melodic concepts. Lindberg has injected this work with a quality of gentle dreaminess which recalls some of the vocal writing of this time in the Scandinavian countries and is also found in some of the folk music.

Och jungfrun hon gar i ringen . And the maiden dances in the circle with the red-gold ribbon which she ties around her lover's arm. "My dear little maiden do not tie it so hard for I am not able to get away." So the maiden loosens the red-gold ribbon and her teasing lover immediately runs to the woods. Then they shot at him with 15 guns. He answered: " if you want me for something you can find me here in the woods."

arranged by Hugo Alfven (d.1969)

This charming folk song is representative of the considerable wealth of folk music from Sweden and the Scandinavian countries in general. The arranger, Hugo Alfven, is considered to have been one of the more important Swedish composers of the 20th century. In addition to his orchestral output, Alfven arranged a number of folk melodies of which this is an attractive example.

*To be performed at the American Choral Directors Association Convention, Dallas, Texas.

THE LAST WORDS OF DAVID Thompson

as taken from II Samuel 23:3,4 He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain. Alleluia; Amen.

LET MY PEOPLE GO Traditional Negro Spiritual/ Arranged by Tom Scott

This world's a wilderness of woe. Let my people go. 0 let us on to Canaan go. Let my people go. Go down Moses way down in Egypt land, Tell old Pharaoh, "Let my people go." When Israel was in Egypt's land, Oppress'd so hard they could not stand. "Thus spoke the Lord" bold Moses said, "If not I'll strike your first-born dead." Go down Moses, Way down in Egypt land, Tell old Pharaoh. Let my people go. This world's a wildemess of woe, oh let us on to Canaan go. Let my people go.

"SAY SO SESSION"

REJOICE, YOU'RE A CHILD OF THE KING Gaither I Huff

Little children rejoice you're a child of the King. Lift your head up high and rejoice, you're a child of the King. Well, it's time to celebrate His mighty love and majesty. The things that the Lord has prepared are good, won't you taste and see. Our Lord Jehovah is King of Kings and ever more shall be. Lift your head up high and rejoice, you're a child of the King.

SMALL GROUPS

YESTERDAY, TODAY, FOREVER Burke/ Marsh

Yesterday, today, forever, Jesus is the same. All may change but Jesus never, glory to His name. Oh how sweet the glorious message, simple faith may claim. Yesterday, today, forever Jesus is the same. Still He loves to save the sinful, heal the sick and lame. Cheer the mourner, still the tempest, glory to His name.

III

"THE NAME OF JESUS"

CAN I TRUST HIM WITH MY LIFE? Marsh

There are many things that I'd like to know as I look down this road1 of life ahead of me, but I don't need to know the details whether great or small; I just need to know that I'm connected to the One, who rules the universe with pow'r, yet gently cares for me. Can I trust Him with my life? Yes, I know I can, put myself in His hands all the way, can I trust Him with my life? Yes, I will, knowin' that He cares, and His love is true. He saved me, turned me right around. Jesus changed me when I trusted Him. Now He keeps me, as I look to Him; can I trust Him with my .life? Yes, I can! When I have my questions great or small, I go to God just like I do with everything, and sometimes I don't find the an· swers just the way I want. But I know my Lord above and He knows everything; how could I doubt Him for a moment when He is my source. Can I trust Him with my life? Yes, I can. Yes, I will!

JESUS IS THE SWEETEST NAME I KNOW Long/Huff

Jesus is the sweetest name I know, and He's just the same, as His lovely name, and that's the reason why I love Him so, for Jesus He is the sweetest name I know. There is no name on earth or heav'n above that we should give such honor and such love, as the blessed name. Let us all proclaim that wondrous glorious name of Jesus. And some day I shall see Him face to face, to thank and praise Him for His wondrous grace. Which He gave to me when He made me free, the blessed Son of God named Jesus. Jesus is the sweetest name I know, and He's just the same as His lovely name. And that's the reason why I love Him so, for Jesus, He is the sweetest name I know.

PRAISE THE LORD, HE NEVER CHANGES Sherrie & Harris/Huff

Life is moving faster than it ever has before. What tomorrow brings us isn't certain anymore. So many paths from which to choose, don't know which way to run. 'Cause every road leads nowhere, every road except for one. Praise the Lord. He never changes. I come to Him; he's always there. He comforts me on every level, takes the burden that I bear; praise the Lord. He never changes; He's never any other way, and He'll be the same tomorrow as He was and is today. Friends and faces come and go like ashes in the wind. Attitudes arise that I don't fully understand. The things that you can count upon, grow fewer every day. But when their number gets to one, that one will show the way. He'll be the same tomorrow as He is today.

NO ONE EVER CARED FOR ME LIKE JESUS WeiglejMarsh

I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus, since I found in Him a friend so strong and true; I would tell you how He changed my life completely, He did something that no other friend could do. No one ever cared for me like Jesus, there·s no other friend so kind as He; no one else could take the sin and darkness from me; 0, how much He cared for me. All my life was full of sin when Jesus found me, All my heart was full of misery and woe; Jesus placed His strong and loving arms about me, and He led me in the way I ought to go. Who can cheer the heart like Jesus, by His presence all divine; true and tender, pure and precious ; 0 , how blest to call Him mine. All that thrills my soul is Jesus, He is more than life to me; and the fairest of ten thousand in my blessed Lord I see.

LOOKING THROUGH HIS EYES Otto/Marsh

Let me see this world dear Lord as though I were looking through His eyes. A world of men who don't want You Lord, but a world for which you died. Let me kneel with You in the garden, blur my eyes with tears of agony! For if once I could see this wor ld the way You see, I just know -I'd serve you more faithfully. Let me see this world dear Lord through Your eyes, when men mocked Your holy name. When they beat You and spat upon You Lord, let me love them as You loved them just the same. Let me stand above petty problems, grieve for men hell-bound, bound eternally. For if once I could see this world the way You see, I just know I'd serve You more faithfully.

Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crowneth thee with loving kindness, and tender mercies.

GREAT IS THE LORD Etude in E for piano Based on Psalm 145

Chopin ':·

Great is the Lord, my God, 0 King. I will extol thee, I will bless Thy name forevermore . I will bless thee everyday and I will praise Thy name forever for Thy greatness is unsearchable. The Lord is gracious, full of compassion. The Lord is slow to anger and of great mercies . Great is the Lord. 0 all Thy works shall praise Thy name and all Thy saints shall bless thee Lord. He is good to all. I will bless Thy name forever. Great is the Lord.

HOW LOVELY ARE THY DWELLINGS Liddle, Arr. Cai:n

How lovely are Thy dwellings. 0 Lord of Hosts! My soul longeth yea fainteth for the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Yea, the sparrow hath found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; ·2ven Thine altars. 0 Lord of Hosts, my King and my God! 0 Lord God of Hosts, hear my prayer: I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord. Than to dwell in the tents of wickedness: For a day in Thy comts is better than a thousand!

PSALM 150 Lewandou;ski, A 1T. Wilson

Hallelujah, Praise the Lord in His holiness, Praise the Lord in His firmament, Hallelujah, Praise ye the Lord in the firmament of all His power. Praise ye the Lord according to His greatness. Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet, Praise Him with psaltry and harp . Hallelujah, 0 praise Him with stringed instruments. Hallelujah, 0 praise ye the Lord on cymbals loud and strong. Let everything, all that have breath, Praise ye now the Lord. Hallelujah!

St. Paul Bible College

"Sing unto the Lord, 0 ye saints of His, and give thanks as a memorial of His Holiness."

We sing before you our song of praises unto our God. Jesus is our only theme and praise to God is our anthem. May the contagion of His joy excite your heart to praise; that together we might sing unto our God a Memorial to His Holiness.

For sixty years, plus one, St. Paul Bible College has been building temple lives to honor God. These have gone forth into all the world a witness to Jesus Christ. Their lives, completely committed to Christ, form a continuous memorial of praise wafting up to God.

Dear friend, please join with t!S in prayer and stewardship that we may build in our day - in a noisy and chaotic earth - a mighty chorus of committed lives to go into all the world with the sound of song forming a memorial to the holiness of our God.

St. Paul Bible College is the midwest regional college of The Christian ,.ill:!d Missionary Alliance, located 30 miles west of Greater Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is a four-year degree offering institution, accredited by the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges, and is an affiliate member of the North Central Association of Bible Colleges.
