Dear Dr. Hanna:
I have enjoyed the January issue of HOUSE BEAUTIFULconcerning the account of your home, designed by FrankLloyd Wright.
I am teaching Architectural Drawing at Ventura College, and I am making a series of 35 mm. slides on outstandingarchitecture to use with my classes. I would like very muchto visit your home and take a series of photographs. Theweekend of our semester break, January 30 to February 2,would be ideal, if this would be convenient with you.
This would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Jean and Paul:
How much Isabel and I have enjoyed our leisurely and
frequent visits to your lovely home this holiday season!
3ailev«s thoughtful memorandum of December 11 prepared us
for it but for as long as we can remember we have been_
reading House Beautiful and we would have come across it
in due tTme"Teven though it might have been after the cock-
tail Tsarty next April - so far are we behind in our magazine
reading) I So when the January issue arrived we dropped
everything including decorating the Christmas tree and gave
it our joint undivided attention. VJhat a rewarding, satis-
fying, and delightful experience!
Of course, I was somewhat prepared because I had the
happy privilege of being a guest in your home about ten
years ago. While I have from time to time attempted to
describe it to Isabel my efforts she now informs me have
been most inadequate and I completely agree. 3oth of us
are counting the days when our present vicarious association
may become a reality and we may see for ourselves all of the
beauty and at the same time practicality you two choice
friends have combined. Come April and we'll be with you!
Meanwhile to you both we send our affectionate greet-
ings and warm good wishes for the new year.
Sincerely,
Dr. and lirs. Paul R. Kanna

Dear Doctor Hanna:
Mrs, Walsh and I were quite thrilled to read about your fine and uniquehome in the January House Beautiful, Your comments and reactions to theoriginal plans, the changes, and developments, together with the folioof excellent pictures, were interesting and enjoyable.
Perhaps you are wondering why the interest of the Walshes. In the late1930' s while I was superintendent at Lancaster, Wisconsin, we made severaltrips to Prank Lloyd Wright's Taliesan East at Spring Green, Wisconsin. On one of these visits we saw and studied the sketches and some of thecompleted drawings for your home. We were very much impressed, of course, with Mr. Wright, his ideas and theories. We wondered how your plans hadworked out. Now we have the answer.
With best wishes for 1963 and the future, -I am

Dear Dr and Mrs Hanna:
It was such a pleasure to read the HOUSE
BEAUTIFU1 for January that I cannot re-
frain from writing to tell you that the
vicarious visit to your home requires a
bread and butter letter.
What joy is reflected - such a testament
to logic and intelligence, as well as to
art.
We finished two years ago a new home. It
is not Y/rightian except by some influences,
but we have expressed ourselves and are happy
in it,
I think I learned a great lesson from your
article - that is, no matter how much one may
think they have achieved perfection, the hori-
zon pulls away, so that change becomes necessary.
May you have many, many^years in your home.

My wife and I have read with interest the January, 1963issue of House Beautiful which goes into such explicitdetail concerning your home.
Being in the same situation you folks were back in 1937,this is a type of house that might give us possibilitiesto grow with for the future.
I have a business trip planned to the west the latterpart of this month and I am wondering if there would beany chance for us to have the opportunity of seeingyour house firsthand before we go too far in decidingwhether this type of house would suit our situation.
I would appreciate hearing from you. A return envelopeis enclosed for your convenience.

Dear Dr. and Mrs. Hanna,
I am writing to inquire about touring your grounds. We have been reading and studying the article about yourhome in House Beautiful, which indicates that possiblyone can make an appointment to see the grounds.
We have always been Frank Lloyd Wright fans. Myhusband and I are Stanford graduates and as studentswe often noticed your house on the hill - when therewas scarcely another house nearby!
My parents, who live on a Utah sheep ranch, arevisiting here, so there would be four of us. My motherhas also been interested in Frank Lloyd Wright's work foryears.
We would certainly appreciate it if you would let usknow whether we could come some time within the next twoweeks, or preferably ten aays.

recall very clearly how you explained, when taking us

in the photos It looks splendid.

Prof. & Mrs. Paul K. Hanna737 Frenchman's RoadStanford, California
Dear Professor & Mrs. Hanna:
Thank you for sharing your house with usand the many others who will pore over the Januaryissue of House Beautiful. My wife and I "discovered"Frank Lloyd Wright in the January, 1938, issue ofArchitectural Forum, which of course included earlyphotos of your house.
Since then we have seen several of hishouses in the flesh, including Taliesen East & West,so you may be able to imagine how we envy you. In1938 we had some misgivings about the honeycomb plan, especially the odd beds and odd-shaped wardrobes inthe original bedrooms. It is good to know that timeand circumstances have let you make changes so as toeliminate some former features and furniture. As thehouse is now revealed, we can only say that F. L. W.was fortunate to find you for clients & vice versa.
Our rectangular slab house was built by ayoung architect for his own use in 1950* (He died ofcancer five years later.) Its scale is modest but it
does have some unusual features, such as the T-shapedliving room. Heat is supplied by hot water coils intne slab. This has given us some termite trouble, andI wonder if your double slab and hot air heat has beenmore successful/' in keeping them out?
Two other queries come to mind: Where is yourwood supply for all those wonderful fireplaces? One smallpile shows in back of the garden house. None elsewhere. Also, where is the furnace room and how is it entered?
If you ever take a sabbatical and need under-standing tenants, we hereby apply.
Very sincerely yours,
^3"

We by great good fortune happened upon a copy ofHouse Beautiful, containing the story of your lovely anddistinctive home.... It was a real pleasure to read aboutit and you. You strain our credulity a bit with that beginningfigure of $15,000; but of course that was in 1936, when"things" were different. We've been hazarding guesses as tohow much you're in hock for now'. You seem to be having greatfun in it and with it,...We built our modest home overlookingthe Mississippi in 1939, for a mere bagatellish $.5,000, andwe've been very happy with it... This is my 3lst year on the^acuity here, trying to ram Lit. and Comp. down the resistant
s of h.s. seniors. ..We shall visit you some fine day whenirit moves us westward. Meanwhile, all our best.

Dear Dr. Hanna:
After seeing pictures of your home in the 1938issue of Architectural Forum and again seeing and reading yourmost interesting and enlightening article in the recentHouse Beautiful, I believe it surely must be a lasting pleasureto be a part of this organic achievement.
If you could give me some information on the methodthat was employed in pouring and finishing your floor mat ofhexagons that are carried throughout your home I would begrateful.
Did the 3" thich first slab have reinforcing steel ?
How thick was the second slab ?
How were the hexagons marked off and scored ?
Is the color in the concrete floor still beautifuland pleasing with a smooth texture ?
I hope that you may find time to answer thesequestions as I am very interested in the possibility ofincorporating a similiar pattern in my future home.
Very truly yours,

Dear Paul:
Herb Wilson brought my attention to this months House Beautiful.I am profoundly impressed with the contribution you and Jeanhave made. The article describes a quality of human experiencethat is so rarely achieved -- the marriage of the practicaloperative with the aesthetic as a natural interaction. Thewillingness of the two of you to share your rich personalexperience in enhancing the quality of your lives throughworking towards an operative aesthetic ideal is, for me, yourgreatest contribution.
One of my major objectves for art education is to begin toopen up to children and adolescents an awareness that art ispart of living. That what one creates in ones own environ-ment is a living art which will have the most immediate valuefor ones life. 1 am afraid that in the unquestioned emphasison "self-expression" we have missed the kind of education thatin some degree would give students the capacity to respond andcreate as you two have done to such perfection. Perhapsartistic interaction would be a better goal for art in generaleducation. I feel that the Hanna issue of House Beautiful shouldbe permanent on the most critical bibliography in art educationbecause it is such a superb example of the highest quality ofaesthetic interaction as a way of life.
Enclosed is a transcript of an address I made last springthat I think you will enjoy. It should further clarify why Ithink your article is so important.
I do hope the young men who are working with the elementaryteachers in training are up to your expectations. The reportsthey send me indicate that they are making every effort toto do their very best.
We are enjoying Tucson very much. Malcolm is most pleased withthe Anthropology department. A concerted effort by a universitywide committee is being made to change the nepotism tradition, what Hollis Moore calls the "Revolution" committee. There arepossibilities for building a doctoral program in art educationas one should surely be maintained in the West. Unless thereare drastic changes in the ideas of some in the Stanford artdepartment I do not forsee a program continuing that would fitinto the high academic standards of the Stanford School ofEducation. This is sad because the program as it has developed
^3, 630060
in these last years was gaining a national reputation asthe most thorough training program. I am impressed that ifthe law can be changed here, and with the exciting and vitalpeople that Hollis Moore is attracting, coupled with thequality of the art department, a strong program could bedeveloped at the University of Arizona.
If you have a choice, I would say that of all my doctoralstudents, Arthur Efland has the greatest potential particu-larly in elementary" art. He hopes to stay another year tofinish his degree. I will be most interested in hearing howhis work with the elementary teacher training program iscoming.
Again Paul may I express both my professional and personalappreciation for what you and Jean have done. I have manyfond memories of the vistas to be enjoyed in Hanna House.
Most sincerely,
Jtuie K. McFee

Dear Dr. and Mrs. Hanna:
My wife and I have just had a very thrilling experiencereading the January issue of House Beautiful. We areboth appreciative for the opportunity to come into yourhome in this matter. I am an ardent admirer of Wrights'works and philosophy, and I think this is truly a master-piece. I have never seen a more functional plan any-where.
I have had the opportunity to see a good many of Wright'sfinished projects through-out the middle west and I amlooking forward to the day when ray wife and I can tourthe United States for the sole purpose of seeing all ofhis works.
Again, we are indeed grateful to you and to House Beautifulfor this tremendous presentation.
If you are ever in Missouri, we extend an open invitationto you.

Dear Mrs . and Dr . Harma
;
I can't tell you how much pleasure I have received
from your refreshing article tnat appears with the lovely
pictures of your beautiful home in House .beautiful.
Frank Lloyd Wright has always been as far as my
husband andl were concerned, the greatest architect of
all. If we had felt that we could have afforded to
have him design a house for us a few years ago, I am
sure we would have. But, now we can afford it and
alas, it as too late!
Four of my friends and myself would appreciate
so much seeing Honeycomb House. One of the ladies,
Penny Hamilton ( Women's editor of the Enterprise filour-
nal in South oan Francisco.) would like to also come and
do a feature article unless you wuuld prefer that she
didn't do this and come only as a guest.
»*e are hoping that you will be able to fine time

It has been a snowy afternoon in this area of the state, but
I have spent a delightful portion of it reading this month's issue
of House Beautiful.
I did want you to know how many delightful memories the
article revived, of pleasant, intellectually, stimulating hours
I spent in the Honeycomb House. My Stanford days were all
fascinating but the hours spent in your home were the most valuable,
You and Mrs. Hanna are to be sincerely congratulated on

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Hanna:
I was fascinated to read about your Frank LloydWright home in the last issue of House Beautiful.I had cancelled my subscription to that magazinebecause I felt it presented the same styles andformat that it did 20 years ago. I'm so glad thatthey sent that issue by mistake because it was worththe entire price of a year's subscription.
I was also glad to learn that you receive peoplewho make an appointment by letter or telephone. Fourof us, Mr and Mrs, Bruce Plckard, Mr. Claude Scott,my fiance, and myself would deem it a great privelege
We are especially interested because we are inthe preliminary stages of planning a city in thedesert 35 miles East of Reno which will incorporatethe Western Institute for Advanced Studies. Thiswill be a university for talented students with noage restrictions. The plans for the music school areunderway and we have the Lawsons formerly with theCollege of the Pacific as the guiding lights.
At your convenience we would love to visit andsee your spectacular home. I am enclosing a stampedaddressed envelope for your conveninec.

Dear Dr. and Mrs. Hanna:
I nave been studying the January House beautiful and thinkyour house is the most beautiful one I have ever seen.
We - my husband, a pathologist; myself, a psychologist(Dr. Yalom who is a psychiatrist on tne staff at Stanford thisyear is a friend of ours),, and five children have come hererecently from Hawaii. Perhaps because of our years there wehave a strong feeling for outdoor-indoor living, one of thefeatures that intrigues us so much with your home.
We are looking for a homes: te now and plan to build as soon
as we can. In the meantime '\e are trying to find an architect.I thought that because of tne great interest which must be
shown towards your house perhaps you might know of someone whohas the same creative approach that Frank Lloya V right had. At

Any advice you could give us would surely be appreciated.

I appreciate very much your troubling to answermy previous letter so fully. The additional detailsare nice to have.
About the firewood, I was wondering only aboutthe storage and how far it must be carried to thehearths. I thought possibly FLW had some concealedstorage area, which does not show on the plan. I didunderstand about your tree farming, and was interestedas we have several friends wno also do that
I forgot to mention previously that we havea dining table which was designed by Mr. Wright. It suits the house and us very well and is alwaysadmired. The chairs are not his but they blend well.

Dear Paul:
Congratulations — it's a wonderful story.
I remember that house when it was a curiosity ontop of a bare, unattractive hill. And it's true,
as told in the story, you folks must have made it
"come alive." We learned to know Frank Wright a
bit here, and it really required "learning." I'llpass on some anecdotes about him sometime.
I cannot resist sending along a copy of my

else your whole life's effort will be jeopardized, and the next generation of kids will be the losersfor it.

Dear Dr Hanna -
I finally caught up with my House Beautiful reading
and was very intrigued with the editorial story of
your experience with the Frank Lloyd Wright de-
sign house.
While Mrs Stuart and I are city "cliff dwellers" in
Chicago, we have been long-time friends and ad-mirers of Mrs Wright and the late Frank LloydWright. We have seen much of his architectural
work and have enjoyed visiting with them at bothTaliesin North and West.
Incidentally, I have a nephew who is pastor of yourFirst Methodist Church in Palo Alto. On my next
trip West, when I can find time to visit Palo Alto,
I would appreciate immensely an opportunity to see
your magnificent home.

Dear Dr. Hanna:
The January issue of HOUSE BEAUTIFUL, devoted largely to
a 25-year appraisal of your Frank Lloyd Wright house, was quitefascinating.
I am writing to you because my wife and I are building a
rather substantial house in Washington with a somewhat differentconcept. After a year of careful planning with our architect,Charles Goodman, we are about ready to go with completionscheduled late this year.
What we want is an in- town "fortress" which reverses yourown concept. We want to bring the outside in - and close thedoors. We aren't interested in looking out on streets, we wantour own private world inside, not only for security but forpurposes of privacy.
You wanted "freedom and beauty of the outdoors" and to re-
move the restrictive walls "that shut out the sights, sounds, smells and touch of nature." We think we can achieve the samegeneral objective within an in- town compound.
The design is startling and in due course I shall takethe liberty of sending something along to you, although in 1964I'm quite sure our house will receive a considerable amount of
visibility in those publications concerned with architectureand modern living.
Like you and your wife, Jean, my wife (who is FrancesKnight, director of the passport office of the Dept. of State)and I have collected many things from around the world. Notsouvenirs, but really interesting things ranging from aboriginebark paintings in Australia to a fantastic large brilliant mandir

from Nepal. We are collecting some paintings, too, to addto the masks, ceramic, glass and other collections. Our housewill have an art gallery in a court in the core of the com-pound. We have a lot of books and we do a fair amount of
entertaining.
In- town Washington is not Palo Alto. But if we can'thave wide open surroundings and a good natural climate, we thinkwe can create the same kind of atmosphere with a different vistaat every turn. Greenery, water, fountains and what have you.Our light will come from above for the most part.
I didn't intend to be this lengthy. I just wanted to tellyou how fascinated I was with your review of your beautifulhome and to say that I think we are making a contributionequally as good with an in- town concept. At any rate in 8,192square feet under cover we ought to achieve something!

Dear Dr. and Mrs. Hanna:
Last month I read an article in House Beautiful , about your house. I read
the entire article and found it very interesting. After reading the article I
have one question, why is the pool at the base of the water cascade round, shouldn't
it be hexagonally shaped? It seems to me that to fit the pattern used through
out the rest of the house, it should. For this reason I would like to know if
Wright actually designed the pool and if he did, wny did he make it round? I
would appreciate an answer to this question very much.
Respectfully Yours,

Dear Professor and Mrs. Hanna,
I wanted to write and tell you how much my fianceand I enjoyed your wonderful story in HouseBeautiful . Last year we were both doing graduatework in Chicago and with Up. Kaufmann's book inhand we set out to see Wright 1 s houses. In fact, just before reading your article we had tracked downyour house and had attempted to see as much aspossible from the outfcide.
Your story was especially wonderful from our pointof view since we too both plan to teach at the
university level. It certainly gives us courageto plan "a house of our dreams" in spite of thehigh mobility rate in academic communities.
With many thanks for making the work of our favouritearchitect come alive and for proving that Wright'swork has been functional as well as beautiful.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Paul:
I would imagine that, after the appearance of theJanuary issue of House Beautiful, you may have beendeluged with letters from friends. However, if you'regiving any prizes in the "greatest-period-of-time-elapsed-since-heard-f rorn" category, we might qualify.
Your father was the Methodist minister inGlenville when you were so young that you wore your hairin long golden curls and, so help me, we have picturesto prove it. We were the Morgans. "Brother and SisterMorgan" and all the little Morgans, who, alas, arelittle no longer. I wouldn't have the vaguest ideawhether your memory stretches back to Glenville but youmay have heard about us from your mother.
Anyway, we send you greetings. Your house looksbeautiful beyond belief and we are happy for you thatyou had the vision and the courage to achieve your dream,
If you ever have a moment we would like to knowabout your mother. We "lost track" of her some yearsago and have so often wondered. She was such a dear, sweet person and such a long-time friend. The lasttime she visited us I think she was living with Russellat Fairmont.
Louise, Mildred and I ( and Phosie the Poodle)live together in a house which, I assure you, bearsabsolutely no resemblance to yours. We just wantedyou to know that we have now listed you high orpossibly even tops in the "Glenville Boy Makes Good"series
.
Sincerely,

Dear Paul:
Ever since the appearance of the January issue of HouseBeautiful I have intended to write Jean and you, but the pressuresin recruiting our faculty have steadily mounted. In any event, Iread the issue from start to finish on your beautiful home. Itwas an exciting story as to how it began in your minds, how itevolved through the years, and what it is like today. You must de-rive great personal satisfaction from having such an unusual home.Congratulations upon a story well done.
I have appreciated your letters regarding candidates for Deanand Head of Education, but I am sorry you have not had any sug-gestions. Each year it seems more difficult to get well-qualifiedpersonnel. I am appalled over the number of candidates who wantto be head of an education department and who have been majors inPhysical Education. I keep hoping some good candidates will appear
I heard you were Acting Dean of the School of Education. Con-gratulations even though you may not relish the responsibilities.

de.a.r Paul and Jean,
Your gorgeous, hard-hound, hook arrived in the post forwhich I thank you most kindly. It is beautifully done and will

you all to do this, indeed.
The place, ore e ae>ain, is simply gorgeous, and you Hannaamay start a new- trend all over the country. Indeed, I noticedthat individuals should have an appointment with you beforecoming on the estate; I can see the reason for this, as youall would be" swamped."
Our pre- Spring rains are here, but our wee flowers arebravely peeking their heads through the Manse yard, all ofus will be happy to have Spring as our winter was so beastly. My Bad, who is in retirement at iiuttonsville, West »/a., hasbeen "snowed up" since last Thanksgiving, and in a recent note
Id he is willing to see Summer. (Host Hannas loathe theheat and thrive in the cold, so it seems, but we have had ourstomachs full of it this winter.)
I hope that you all have received the sample- tartan-pattern. It is gorgeous indeed and is beinb worn by our Clan.Paul must have a kilt made, too. My eld kilt is the LacLennan, one that I wear or special occasions and cherish, but the Hannayis lovelier.
I dedicated my new book, "The Celtic Church," to Rev. Dr.

article, and for the carbon of your letter to Pat Brown. It^s
still too early to know how the new superintendent is going to
perform. It looks now as if he is prJUnarily interested in be-
coming the gubernatorial candidate for the Republican
Party at the next convention. Whatever he does far education in
this state will be done slowly, with an eye to keeping his image
before the people of the state.
Cordially yours,
Paul R. HannaActing Dean
