TER~~I NO LOGY

In the· discussion of 11 CLOGGING STANDARD ENGLISHu below~ the names of the movements used are . those adopted by the National Clogging and Hoedown Council on May 13, 1978~ and which CLOG supports in our effort to make the discussion and writing of clogging steps and routines clearer and more understandable for everyoneo The definitions below are CLOG 0 s but ar·e based on the Council 0 Se

All clogging steps are made up of some combination of the following Basic Movementso The movements themselves fall into two groups ~ Toe Movements and Heel Movements& If there is any rule in so individual a dance as clogging that may be said to be an absolute~ it is that every complete Toe Movement (which occurs on the up beat of the music) is followed by a complete Heel Movement 9 with the Heel Movement occurring on the down beat of the musice The beat or rhythm of the dance is kept with the heel; anytime the heel is sounded~ the knee is flexed and then straightened~ resulting in the characteristic up~and~down motion of the dancer 8 s bodye ·

In the following definitions an attempt has been made to describe what is happening to the weight of the body in relation to the rhythm of the musico The word uclick 11 is used to indicate that a tap has contacted the flooro All clicks should have a sharp~ c'lear sound~ not scuffed or muffledo

TOE MOVEMENTS

TOE The ball of the foot produces a click while the heel remains out of contact with the flooro TOE implies that the body weight has been transferred to the ball of the foot; the term TOUCH is used when the same sound is produced but the foot is picked up again immediately without transferring any body weight to that footo

DOUBLE TOE Two clicks are produced in the space of one beat of musico The ball of the foot strikes the floor during the forward motion of a short kick and the knee straightens; immediately the same foot swings backward and the ball of the foot strikes the floor again in the same spot as the knee bends upwardo The heel should not touch the flooro The forward and back motions are considered to be one movement with no hesitation between themo Normally the clicks occur slightly in front of the body~ but they may be done in back or to the sideo

ROCK A click is produced by transferring the weight onto the ball of the foot slightly behind the bodygs center of gravity; the knee is in a flexed position causing the weight of the body to 11 rock 11 slightly to the rear as the center of gravity changesa The opposite foot is always lifted off the floor during a ROCK; the heel of the foot doing the ROCK does not touch the flooro

BRUSH The foot is allowed to swing from the knee with a pendulum action; the ball of the foot produces a click by striking the floor a glancing blow and continuing in the direction of the swing (which may be to the front~ to the rear~ or across in front of the opposite leg)o

DRAG The foot is flat on the floor and the knee is flexed when the DRAG beginso With a springing motion which moves the weight of the body up and back~ straighten the knee allow-ing momentum to lift your heel slightly off the f'loor and drag your foot rearward about half the length of your footo The heel never entirely loses contact with the floor, and.weight is distributed along the length of the foot at the end of the movemento There is no distinctive clickB (Also done with both feet on the floor in the same mannere) ·

HEEL MOVE~1ENTS

HEEL The weight of your body is already on the ball of the foot when the HEEL move= ment is doneG Snap the heel down, producing a sharp click, and flex the knee downward, distributing the body weight along the entire length of the foote

STEP Place entire foot flat on the floor, producing a click with the toe and heel taps at the same time and transferring the body weight along the length of the foot while flexing the knee downward&

SLIDE A down=and=forward counterpart of the up-and-back motion of the DRAGo With the foot flat on the floor and the knee straight, roll your weight up onto the ball of the foot, letting your knee begin to go slacko As the weight of your body begins to drop forward and down, let the instinctive tightening of your thigh muscles save you from a fall by sliding your foot forward (about half the length of your foot) and then letting your heel snap down~ producing the click and redistributing your weight along the whole length of your footo At the end of the SLIDE the knee will be in a flexed positiono (Also done with both feet on the floor in the same mannero)

SUPPLEMENTAL TERMINOLOGY

DOUBLE CHUG

STOMP

HOP.

DT

XIB

XIF

A shorthand term applied to the combination of DRAG and SLIDE so common in clogging stepse The movements are done in one continuous action with the clicks of the SLIDE portion always falling on the down beat of the musico The SHUFFLE can be done with both feet on the floor at the same time or with one foot on the floor while the other foot is doing a Toe Movement which occurs during the same upbeat as the DRAG portion of the SHUFFLEe The body weight first moves back and simultaneously up then moves down and simultane= ously forwardG Repeating the SHUFFLE continuously gives the rhythm~keeping motion characteristic of advanced cloggingo

A strongly accented flatfoot STEP ~ the term is used in describing a clogging step where a particularly distinctive click is neededo

Any upward motion that causes both feet to lose contac~ with the floor = the click is produced when the foot comes back into contact with the flooro Land= ing can be made on the same foot that did the push off or the HOP can be used to change the weight to the opposite foot as the step demandso

SHORT INTRODUCTION ON 11 NEW 1 DUTG.H DANCES

The revival of Dutch folk dances is actually initiated by the folk musicianso They continued playing traditional folk music during the past decades. Besides the clarinet and accordion they also use the traditional folk instrumentso Together with the revival of folk music people realized that the dance repertoire was very small and that research was neededo There are some dance tunes performed without knowing to which dance it belongso This is why some researchers create 11 new 11 Dutch folk dances after intensive resea·rcho Those new dances are closely related to the traditional dances. Some characteristics of Dutch folk dances are: - Happy, freely but not exaggerated - Steps and combination of steps are simple - Turning in a polka turn-outs to be more preferable than a walso - There is a preference for starting with the Right foot and moving CWo

The dance was created by Elly Olderaan, who did extensive research in the southern part of Holland and northern part of Belgium, the province of Brabanto

:r'MOUNTAIN. SPRING SONG (Taiwan)

The mountain people are fond of singing and dancing; when they are happy they begin spontaneously to move their hands and tap their feet. It may therefore b~ said that their dances have no pre-determined steps or music: when they are joyful they will dance to any music.

The first part of this dance shows the young men and girls walking slowly hand in hand over the open country in the beautiful spring sunshine; the second part show them swinging their arms and stamping their feet as they break into a dance df joy; in the 3rd part they are wandering happily to and fro in the mountains reluctant to go homeo

SHTI GATZU'DEBRU (this is July)

Folk dance from Okinawao Record available later from Folk Dance House~ Box 2305 N Babylon LI NY 117030

Taught by Harumi Sana, Maine Folk Dance Camp 19830

Music of this dance originated about 500 years ago in Okinawao It is quite a religious song deciated to Budda in the Okinawa areao People sang this music to set at rest the soul of the dead persono Once a year, on July 13th~ people welcome the souls of ancestors whom they have lost forevero They commemorate this by cleaning the ancestor 0 s tombs and gardens and present flowers and fruitso The people dance in front of the gardens & tombso

The dance is done with special Japanese wooden iicastanetsii (not like the Spanish cast~ anets) with red and white tassels, made out of bambooo In Okinawa they are not tied to the fingers~ although as Harumi explained that is quite difficult to master the art of playing them this wayo So they do make these now with an elastic type string to tie around the fingerso Spanish castanets may be used but they should be tied on and used in the Japanese way as demonstrated in classo On each beat of the music the ~~castanets~a are 1'cl i eked 12 together o
